Logic Board on iMac G5 busted.  What can I do?

Hmmm where to start.
I bought my iMac G5 in July of 2005 so it is just over a year old. About a month ago I turned my computer on and i could not get any kind of hard wired internet connection. So i turned on my air port wireless and was able to get a connection. I then turned that off and rebooted my computer and was able to log on to the hard wire just fine. This has happened three or four times since. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time. Well, I was having trouble getting any kind of internet connection just the other day (hard wire or wireless) and so I decided to take it to a mac genious at a local store. When he plugged it in and went to turn it on nothing happened. That was kinda a kick in the teeth I won't lie. So he quotes me at $861 for a new logic board. $861?!?! I don't care that I didn't buy the warrenty, that's still a ton of money... thats more than half of what I spent on the computer itself. These are great computers. They shouldnt break after just a year. I decided to sleep on it and come here to see if I could get help. I was able to put my hard drive in my room mates Power Mac so none of my information is gone. Does anybody know what I can do? I know there have been problems with logic boards in the past on the iMac G5s (as I have been reading here on the discussion boards). Does anybody know how to get the cost of repair down or how to get some compensation from apple or a replacement board or a replacement computer? I'm at a loss...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is new information.
I did not actually call apple. It was my mom who did... I'm in class all day so I had to rely on family. What she has found is that the reason the logic boards go bad is because the capasitors heat up and that is what causes to logic board to fry. Like I said I dont know squat about harware.
The reason I did not leave my computer at the apple store is for this reason: He had quoted me a bill for $861 to replace the logic board. I asked him if he was going to call me before he made any replacement decision (no matter what they discovered the real problem to be). He said the only way they would call me was if it was not the logic board. He said that by leaving it there with them I was basically agreeing to fork up $861. So i can't even leave it there for them to run tests for fear that they will just get money happy and throw in a new logic board. I can't stress enough... I don't have that kind of money. I mean ****. New intel imacs start at 999. For that price, screw the G5.
The genious said he doubted it was the power supply due to the internet problem history. As of now my hard drive is in my room mates power mac so i still can have access to all my school files. Thank God for good friends. I hav a friend who owns a computer repair store and he said he can get me a new logic board installed for $376. Granted thats a great price over apple, but how do I make sure that this one does not over heat? I cant be replacing LB after LB like some people have been doing here in the discussion boards. I'm tellin ya, I live a few hours from home and ive got a 96 Grand Am that isnt exactly a gem either.
So again everybody, thanks for all fo your help. More would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and when I opened it up, the compter wasn't really that dusty. I was thinking it was going to be way worse.
I apologize for my crabbiness... but its practically finals week and ive lost my greatest helper. All of your help is greatly appreciated.

  • Where can I find a logic board for iMac G5 17" (EMC No. 1989) Apple Part

HI  Where can I find a logic board for iMac G5 17" (EMC No. 1989) Apple Part #: 661-3290, 661-3351?

    Thanks--makes life easier!
I found DV Warehouse has a number of G5 logic boards but none had the exact model number:
    http://www.dvwarehouse.com/iMac-G5-Logic-Board-c-4771.html&pltid=05fedd9f246e2a1 dbc9f35cd6712e781
They have a toll-free number. You could ask if another board # would be compatible.
Another option is to contact recylers or schools shucking off older gear. Using the enigma of " A used computer is worth more parted out," you might be able to pick up another G5 cheaper than its LB. Unless the LB had the dreaded "leaky capacitor" failure, most computers don't get discarded for a bad LB.

  • I have an old imac ruby..What can I do with it?

I have an old imac ruby.. it's been sitting in my attic for years.. Would I be able to bust that out and get it working for my son? He's 5 and would mostly be using it for internet, and learning games, even videos if possible.. Or is that totally impossible? Is it possible to get it set up to work with fios internet?  I'm thinking a resounding no, but not sure what to do with such a pretty retro piece of technology.. Any suggestions?  If there is no use for it, are there any good ways to get rid of it?
The following are the specs written on the outside of the computer:
Model #- M 5521 DHHS Code: SA ruby 450MHZ 20GB HD/DVD/192 MB SDRAM MDM US EN KYBD/MAC OS
It also has an "ethernet" ID...

I think you are a little pessemistic about this machine.
The best approach would be playing lots of games and running educational software.
    With more workd and dollars...
You can get on the Internet with this machine will be slow with modern site, but will work find.  Will not do video on the web.
You could max out the memory to 1gig. Could install 10.4 and use TenFourFox as your web browser.
Be sure to update the firmware before installing Mac OS X.
You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your  firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is Open Firmware?
The firmware on a PPC is called Open Firmware. Open Firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of Open Firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5  DVDs are available from Apple by calling 800-767-2775 as of January 20, 2013.

  • Can logic board be at failure if I can boot the machine?

My 8800GT went kaputt (screen jagged up and crashes during boot under OS X) so I replaced it with GTX285, which only worked for 2 hours and then machine shut down and didn't power up again with 285 in. But I could still power up AND boot Windows with 8800GT, even if the screen is all jagged up. (Mac OS X doesn't boot, it crashes during boot with 8800GT).
I take it to the apple store in France/Lyon and they tell me they think it's the logic board which has failed. They'll order one, and try, and if it works, I pay, if it doesn't I don't pay.
I told them that the logic board couldn't have failed since the machine boots into Windows without any issues, and I can use the machine on Windows. It recognizes both CPU's and all the RAM, I even did a Geekbench test in Windows.
What I suspected was Power Supply but they said Power Supply is fine. But checking power supply is a long procedure, almost takes an entire day to watch and record all the voltage outputs. It's not a simple task, which I highly doubt they did.
Now, my question is, Can a Mac Pro boot into Windows and be usable with a failed logic board? Have you ever heard of such a thing? I could even use that machine in Target Mode from my MBP. 99% a working Target Mode means all the I/O on the machine is working perfectly fine.

Bowker, yes within limits the slot loading logic boards (350 - 500mhz) are reasonably interchangable. The 600 and 700mhz ones don't seem to fit in slower machines, due to a different shaped heat sink on the video chip. Why are you swopping? You will not notice much difference between a 400 and 500mhz, I swopped between a 350 and 500mhz and honestly there's very little difference. Three important things if you do decide to go ahead.
1 make sure that this board works before purchase
2 replace the PRAM battery while you have your iMac in bits
3 if you are going to run OSX, make sure that the new logic board has been flashed with the 4.19 firmware.
    hope this helps

  • My G5 died... new logic board needed... What do i do?

    Ok, here's the story:
The other day, my G5 crashed when i wasn't using it (screensaver).
I hard rebooted it, fan started to spin, power light flashed only when i pressed the button and then no screen. After a while, fans started at full speed...
Tried loads of things (reseat memory, PCI cards etc...), nothing worked.
I took it to the local Apple Certified Service centre. They called me after half a day to tell me that the Logic board had a problem and needed replacing and quoted £585 inc vat!
No need to say that i am pretty upset as i paid 1400 3 years ago for that machine!
Now, what are my best options?
This is a dual 1.8 G5 (early 05) with 3Go ram and 2 SATA drives. I have 2 standard Pci Cards for music in it (RME audio card and UAD-1).
    Should I get it repaired?
Should i buy a second hand G5 (which would cost the same sort of price but with the risk of having a problem as well)
Should I go for a new or newer Mac pro but can i reuse my memory, PCI cards, disks etc???
    Thanks a lot for advice.

    Hi tek_uk,
    Welcome to the forums.
Your mac is one found in either of these model series. Anything you have now on your mac would work for both series and if you chose to go with one of the faster models listed you could easily do that.

  • Failure rate of logic boards on imac

In going through forum topics, it seems there's a lot of trouble with imac logic boards. Mine didn't last as long as I would've hoped. Does it just seem that way or do these boards have a troubled history? Thanks ahead.

There was an issue with iMacs freezing. Some people got their logic boards and graphics cards replaced before Apple knew what was causing the problem. Apple has since released a graphics firmware update which fixes the problem completely, which is just a click away in Software Update if your iMac needs it.

  • FCP Express HD wont install on a iMac w Intel, what can I do?

I have this friend of mine that recently bought FCP Express HD 3.5 and a Imac with Intel Core Duo.
He had several issues when installing and the application doesn't open, it gets a message that the AGP Graphics card is not the indicated for the app.
Do you know what can we do? Is there an update to resolve this problem?
    Thank you
It has Tiger, the most recent update, 1.3 Ghz, 512 RAM, QT 7 Pro.

If it IS FCE 3.5 and he HAS an Intel Mac that message WILL NOT appear.
It seems most likely that he is using FCE 3.0 HD which WILL produce that message.
Can you check the exact computer and the exact version of FCE?
    Ian.

  • MacBook pro isn't even 2 years old and the logic board died.... Can apple help?

Will apple replace or exchange this for me? It has never been abused, I treat it with so much care. I didn't even think about getting the extended warranty...I expect my computer to last longer than 2 years. Feel really let down by this.

Sorry for your problems but, unless there's a known problem with certain problems, Apple will charge you to replace your motherboard. Next time, I strongly suggest buying AppleCare. I've owned Macs since 1985 and when AppleCare became available, I always bought it for any hardware device for which it was offered - and I believe that it is a particularly good investment for laptops.
You should take it to an Apple Store and see what the price would be for the repair - they are often surprisingly reasonable.

  • IMac Logic Board Issue...

    Here is a little history:
Bought an iMac G5 1.8GHz in February of 2005. In October of 2005 I had the power supply and logic board replaced. In August of 2006 I had the logic board replaced again. In July of 2007 I had the logic board replaced AGAIN...
I am once again having issues with what I think is a faulty logic board. I had a "Must Restart" grey pop-up yesterday. Did an SMU reset, then restarted the computer. It worked for 24 hours. This morning it did the same thing. I restarted, but it went to a blue screen and stayed there... I did a SMU reset, and a PRAM reset. Then called Applecare and they hinted I should do a disk repair with the install disk... Tried that. The computer won't boot from the disc when pressing C on startup... just goes to Blue Screen after grey apple screen and freezes.
I tried starting up whilst holding the "Option" button. Both the Macintosh HD and OS X Tiger DVD are found, but once again, it won' boot from either. Just to the Blue Screen and that is it.
I am over 3 months from my logic board replacement time frame... besides, I think the last replacement of it should have taken care of it last July, right? I have opened up the computer, and there are 5 leaking capacitors...
I am right in thinking the Logic Board is fried, right?
What would you suggest doing? Trying to get another logic board for free from Apple, even though I am beyond warranty? I DO NOT want to pay 800-900 bucks for sure. Any other tips or suggestions? I figure I could get a SATA/USB2 enclosure for the HD if I get another mac... not to mention I am a pretty good back-upper...
    Thanks!!!

I have a first generation 20" iMac G5; the logic board failed about a year ago and was replaced under the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" program at my local Apple store. It failed again last week; I returned to the Apple store and was advised it would not be covered as it has passed the 3 year mark outlined in the program and was offered a 20% discount on purchasing a new iMac (I did not feel this was a reasonable resolution). I contacted AppleCare via telephone regarding the issue as I felt Apple should support a product with a well documented defect. The "Product Specialist" I spoke to stated "my original logic board had been replaced with an updated one" and "the failure of this current logic board is unrelated to the Extension program failure". He then went on to contradict himself and stated "Apple could not / would not continue to support the logic board failures after the 3 year mark". I was offered no resolution; I am a long time Apple supporter, advocate and evangelist who has advised friends, family and colleagues to purchase Apple products. I am now extremely hesitant to do so after this incident. As this is a recurring and well documented issue with this product, I feel Apple should either replace or offer a replacement iMac at a HIGHLY substantial discounted rate to any customers impacted by this product. Hundreds of posts here and at other forums show there are many unhappy customers.

  • Powerbook G3 Pismo-Bad Logic Board?

Hi. My powerbook G3 pismo suddenly refused to work last week. It chimes at startup, but then only gets the "grey screen." I took the hard drive out and put in in an external enclosure......it's fine. I took out an extra RAM chip I had added a couple of years ago....still no go. I have attempted to access the disk in Target Disk mode...no go. I've also tried to start up from a different startup disk by pressing the option key at startup...still no go! The Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my Pismo never gets past the "loading....." stage. I am writing in hopes that someone can tell me what the problem is. I'm assuming it's the Logic Board and am ready to purchase a replacement off Ebay, but would hate to buy one if someone thinks or knows for sure that it is not the Logic Board. I guess what I'm asking is this......What exatly happens when your Logic board fails? Are the symptoms similar to the ones I've described above? Thanks in advance and hope someone who's had this problem can help!

    Sax,
The HD ribbon cable would have been such an easy fix, but unfortunately I think the logic board is now the only fix as Cornelius has suggested.
Please keep in mind that the logic board contains multiple components and you can have a failure of one component without affecting the rest of the board. The FireWire bus is controlled by the PCI bus bridge whereas the internal HD is controlled by a separate I/O device controller. Even a partial failure of the I/O device controller is possible as evidenced by still having functionality of the optical drive. See this link: go to Architecture > Block Diagram and Buses > Block Diagram.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/MacintoshCPUs-G3/PowerBook/index.html
You can tear down the Pismo to replace the logic board or continue the inconvenient use of the FireWire HD. There is another alternative, however; buy an expansion bay HD enclosure and install your current HD in the enclosure. Since the optical drive interface still works, the media bay HD should have no problem. However, I would check with MCE first.

  • IPod does'n play music (Logic Board?)

Would the Logic Board be the problem if everything on my iPod works excpept the music? It says play (the triangle icon appears) but the progress bar never moves. If it isn't the logic board isn't the problem, what could it be? (I've restarted it, restored it, completely formatted it [zeroed everything out]). The hard drive spins...

Could be many reasons, if you have a 5G iPod (iPod Video), and recently updated the firmware to 1.2 or above. Version 1.2 had problems playing MP3 files encoded in mono, it just wouldn't play them. If the files are MP3 are mono encoding, just set the start time to 0:00:01, and they will work.
This is the only advice I can offer, and I hope it works out for you.
