Logic Board replaced after randomly shutting down

I know there are a lot of posts on the randomly shutting down issue...
My MacBook started randomly shutting down after a month since I got it. Apple replaced the logic board and I got it back today. I read on some posts that people got their logic boards replaced and the problem continued. Is this likely to happen with my MacBook?
This seems to be a big issue. My friend got a MacBook last week and it started randomly shutting off within the first hour of use. He had it exchanged, and it's fine now... but for how long?

I don't think it would do any good to yell at the store manager/technician. Still, I do understand you since I got the same problem here. However, since my logic board was replaced, I got fewer RSD, which is a start...
Personnaly, I know that my MB is guaranted 1 year, so I won't hesitate to have it repaired, or exchanged if needed (after 3 repairs for the same problem usually). As a matter of fact, other than some RSD, my fan has started making noises when I power up my MB, when it is cool. I wait because there is no solution out there yet (for RSD, and my problems are not that bad.
By the way, reading many of the threads around here, we can almost state for sure that:
-the logic board
-the RAM
-the hard drive
-the heat sink
-the battery
are not the (direct) sources of RSD. This has to be proved for the processor and the fan.
To be followed...

  • New board new problems (random shut downs)

    Hello all,
I'm currently trying to track down the most likely source of random complete powerdowns my PC is suffering. They only occur when I attempt to play games, not when I use windows apps like word IE etc.
First a little background, after a year of reliable service I recently cooked my old motherboard a 865PE Neo2-LS, not sure how but it buzzed unpleasently when the PSU had power.   Anyway, wanting the least hassle when getting a replacement I decided to go for the platinum board of the same chipset. Being a lazy sort (and lacking backup facilities right now) I just replaced the board and powered up to check all was well. The PC booted fine, windows (XP-pro) loads fine, and games played fine for about the first day. (Yup I know,   I'll be doing a clean install once I've backed up but I think I've a bigger problem than a wipe will fix.)
Now however I seem to be getting crashes in games within a few minutes of play (a complete and abrupt power-down). To me this looks rather like a nasty memory leak I had on a faulty board a with ago, but I've tested my RAM with the windows memory diagnostic tool and all appears well http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp, curiously though changing the slot I plug the RAM into seems to help.
Anyway to cut a long story short I'm going to be doing a wipe down and re-install shortly, but I've a feeling the problem is more fundamental, so I'm starting a thread to fish for a few suggestions. Particually I'm concerned that I may have fried my graphics card (though I get no graphical errors), or other additional components so if anyone thinks the problem sounds like a particular piece of hardware is borked let me know so I can focus on checking it out.
Any and all help much appreciated, cheers,
    Gift.

    Hello again,
Thanks for the advice on the PSU, I was just about to ask what brand I should get, I've decided to copy you Del and ordered an enermax.   Somewhat stupidly I didn't even think about the PSU when I put my rig together a year ago, got way to interested in the shiney new hardware and took my eye off the ball. I suspect it's what cost me my motherboard   I'm such a dope.... Ah well I'll know next time.
In the interim I've disconnected one of my HDs to try and ease the strain on the PSU, I don't want a repeat cooking but I do need my PC for work. That taken into consideration I thought the risk management would be the most sensible compromise.
Anyway thanks to both you and Sharpe, (the other memtest was fine btw ), I'll let you know how I get on; you've been very helpful.
    Cheers,
    Gift.
PS What is a good PSU spec at the mo?

  • Latest Release Week with Random Shut Down

Well, though I have been following this board and the random shut down issue, I went ahead and purchased my first mac. Got the White Macbook 2.0, with 2 Gigs of ram waiting to be installed. It's on its way from China as we speak and should arrive Friday. I was wondering what the most recent release week is that people are having the random shut down with. Has it stopped with later weeks or does it continue? Mine shipped Friday. Any idea what week mine will be?

    Hi Andrew,
I've taken in two other MacBooks for the same reason. The first time I brought the laptop in, I couldn't make it shut down and the Genius sent me home. The second time I brought it in, I left it shutdown with the white light frozen on. The laptop was also very hot. They replaced it without asking any further questions. The second time I brought it in to the Genius Bar, I just told them the whole situation, explained that I was a long-time Mac user and really didn't want to ruin my mac experience by having to try to "proove" a problem that was already happening with my previous book. They took me at my word and replaced it without any further testing. (I mean, frankly, why would I be interested in randomly replacing a perfectly new MacBook if it wasn't acting up?)
Hope that helps. I have not called in the tech support line, but have always brought it into an Apple Store.

Hard drive sensor or logic board failure.
Try a SMC Reset, only thing I can help.

  • Grey restart and program crashes after logic board replacement?

Apologies for if a thread already exists for this, I had a look around and nothing seems to quite fit the problems I'm experiencing-
I recently got the logic board replaced on a 13-inch macbook pro, osx lion, 10.7.5. I got this done because of the failure of one of the usb ports and the centre row of typing keys.
however (although the keys and usb now work), after the replacement, I have started to experience problems that weren't present before. These include:
programs spontaneously crashing, examples being safari, itunes, and photoshop
the computer spontaneously going into the grey textured screen and restarting all programs, but seemingly not initiating a full shut-down and restart
itunes has deauthorised me and claims that there are already 5 computers authorised to the account. No new computers have been authorised during the repair time and attempts to deauthorise and reauthorise fail, this was not present before the repairs.
video playback on youtube and similar sites can sporadically cut out completely, either freezing or causing the entire video 'screen' to white out or vanish
playback of other moving graphics such as gifs often is jerky or replaced with transparent or white frames
I've updated all my software to the latest versions just in case it was simply that I wasn't up to date with something, but to no avail. Is this a common error with a solution, or am I going to have to get the logic board replaced again? I'm still within my three-year warranty, but I don't appreciate the concept that I brought in my machine to be fixed, and it came back even more broken.
(safari crashed during writing this, here is the crash report in case that helps)

    There's a 90-day warranty on the repair.

  • IMac randomly shuts down after Leopard Upgrade

My wife's iMac randomly shuts down since we installed Leopard. It wasn't doing this before the Leopard upgrade.
It takes about 5 mins. of inactivity after the machine enters sleep mode, then it shuts down. We've searched the Discussions but have yet to see an answer to our question. Nothing but an iSight is plugged in to the machine. Any suggestions?

Same problem with random shut downs that get more and more frequent making the computer unusable. Took to Apple Store where they did not recognise the problem - tried replacing RAM then power cable then power supply. Said problem was fixed but started to recur within a short time of using it back home. Used install discs to reinstall the original operating system (Mac OS X 10.5.2) and the problem resolved - on upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.8 the problem immediately recurred. Have gone back to 10.5.2 now and all seems okay.
Seems strange that there are so many postings about this and Apple Store (Genius staffseem to be unaware of it as a problem).

  • Can't open Aperture after Logic Board replaced

Have a question regarding obtaining new serial number for the Aperture program as after my mac (version 10.5.8)  had a Logic Board replaced
Aperture program ( 2.1.4) does not open as require serial number what I do no have anymore (all packaging gone long ago).
So if I  buy a copy of Aperture 2.1.1, it will give me a new serial number.
Will I be able to use that serial number to open the program I have (aperture 2.1.4)?
Or what is the best way to obtain images from the program i can't open anymore?
    Thank you

"Aperture 3 on your new Mac will be able to convert and to upgrade your current Aperture Library." - How ?
Do you have an external drive, where you can copy your Aperture Library to?
Make sure, this drive is formatted Mac OS X extended, before you copy the Aperture Library to it.
Also set the "Ignore Ownership" on this volume flag. (When you select your external drive in the Finder and use the "Get Info" command, you'll see this flag in the "Sharing and Permissions" brick.
You can simply drag the Aperture library to the external drive, using the Finder.
Then connect the drive to your new Mac.
Now you first need to repair your Aperture library - it is safer:
Select the Aperture library on the drive in the Finder. Hold down the ⌥⌘-keys and double click the library. Select "Repair Database" and let that run. That may take some time.
After this you should be able to double click the Library and to open it in Aperture 3 as regular library.
Without an external drive you need to copy using the Network or to mount your ols Mac in Target Disk mode http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3838?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Connect it to your new mac with USB or firewire and boot it with the T key held down.
Then your new mac will see the old one as external drive.
To extract only images from your saved Masters folder, select the Masters folder you copied in the Finder, then press ⌘F. In the search panel that opens add a search (press +) and set the search to "Kind is image".
This should show all images in the folder.
Caution! If the headline is set to "This Mac" and not to the name of the folder, you need to edit the preferences of the Finder. In the "Advanced" tab of the panel set the "When performing a search" to "Search this folder".
Don't touch any images in the search, if the heading shows "this mac". Then you are risking to move any image file on your mac.

  • After having the logic board replaced, Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the same backup files as before.

After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • My Macbook Pro (early 2011, 15") randomly shuts down after being turned on from sleep mode?

-So over the past week, I find that my macbook pro will randomly shut down within 1 minute of being turned on from sleep mode. Within the first few days of this, I figured out that it will only happen if I move my mac around before its completely into sleep mode. BUT now it shuts down regardless or preparation before sleep mode and everytime I turn my computer back on, I log in, and then have restore my chrome window tabs and stuff. What is going on??
-Do I need to replace my drive??
    *PLEASE help me, thanks!
    P.S. - I am runnng OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5

    austine38,
if you boot into Safe mode, and then immediately restart into normal mode, log in, and put it to sleep, does it still exhibit the same random shutdowns afterwards?

  • What happens after a logic board replacement?

After a logic board replacement will my hard drive be erased? If so, can I simply restore my entire system from backup using Time Machine? Thank you.

Your hard drive won't automatically be erased, but some commercial applications may refuse to work, and a very small number of preferences won't be carried over.

  • Macbook randomly shuts down after installing Mountain Lion.

I have a late 2008 Aluminum Macbook; as of last week I have installed Mountain Lion finally and I've come across a rather irritating problem: the laptop keeps randomly shutting down. I've noticed it primarily likes to go down when the battery is at 89%. I've never had battery trouble before, this happens even when the computer is not over-heating, so I'm fairly certain it's not a battery issue. After restarting the computer all the applications I was using are still open and any progression I had made on documents have been saved since the time of the crash.
I'm really at a loss as to what's going on with this. Has anyone experienced something like this or have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

    Hi ppl again :)
I found that screen is not disabled, it is only have a very low brightness. So I begin to wait because I saw that actually installer is still running. Finally, Mas OS was installed and after that I change brightness using keyboard (it didn't worked while installation). Now all is ok. I also tried to reboot and system loaded correctly.
I hope this will help. Unfortunatelly Apple support was unable to help me by a phone call.
    Have a nice day!

  • MacPro randomly shuts down after upgrading to GTX 660

So I've had the EVGA GTX 285 mac edition in my MacPro 3,1 for a while now and decided to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 660 because I wanted a card that would provide more power for my 3d work and allow more gaming potential when I'm not working. After the upgrade I have been experiencing random shut downs. At first I thought it was during heavy loads (from my 3d software) but yesterday a shut down occured when I was just typing up an email with hardly anything running in the background. I've tried to diagnose the problem but to no avail. I believe the power supply is enough because the older card uses 2 of the power ports inside the MacPro while this new card uses just one. It's not overheating because everything runs at around 30C - 50C (rarely spiking to 58C.) Anyone know what could be the cause? I am working on my Windows partition by the way.

How interesting...we've noticed the same thing on 3 different occasions as recently as this a.m.. My wife was online for school, and the screen suddenly went "almost" black. There was nothing to do but shut down and turn it back on.
In 3 years since we've had this iMac, and running on 10.4, we never had this problem, so we're also hoping the community out there has some input on this issue.
    Thanks!

  • Loud fan after logic board replaced

I just had the logic board replaced on my 17" iMac after it would not power up (apple did it for free because they said it was one of the defective boards). The fan now is VERY loud. I have tried reseting the SMU, setting the CPU speed to something other than automatic. Nothing seems to work. Top say the machine is idle 95% of the time... Before the board was replaced it was VERY quiet... Any ideas?

Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Miriam is right. Take it back and have it repaired correctly. We have good consumer laws in MA so they have three chances to get it repaired correctly or they owe you a refund or a new machine.
