Logic board swap fw400 to fw800

My 867Dual died and all indications seemed to point to the logic board.
So I swapped the cpu into a FW800 1ghz (shell from parted psu) because they share the same 133 bus.
It works and I haven't had anything strange happen
Anyone else do this?
Now I can use the newer wireless card.
I also want to try this with my main unit a dual 1mhz mdd fw400.
Any reason not to be doing this?

Running fine, and I found out it was the AGP card that failed causing the no start.
Anyways, I have a dual 867FW800 waiting for an airport card

  • How Do You Identify Logic board revisions for MDD FW800?

I have a logicboard, the CPU board, and the heatsink for a PowerMac G4 MDD FW800 DP 1.25 that I want to sell, but I can't figure out what Revision it is (A, B, C) or if it is 133MHz or 167MHz. I do not have the computer (bought for parts) they came from anymore but I have my own MDD FW800 DP1.25 I could consult. Logic boards, I'm discovfering, don't make for easy reading--can anyone assist or point me to a "Logic Boards 101" text?

    Hi-
The following should help to ID the logic board.
For the FW800 1 ghz board, the part is identified by looking at the serial # ON THE BOARD.
Look for one of the following code combinations in the
    last 4 digits of the serial # : NME,P2X,P3E,P3G,P3U,P7P,P8E,
    PFD,PFF,PFG,PFT
This would be the 133mhz model.
For FW800 multi processor boards, the part is identified by looking at the serial # ON THE BOARD.
Look for one of the following code combinations in the
    last 4 digits of the serial # : NMF,P2Y,P3F,P3H,P3V,P7Q,P8F,
    PFE,PFH,PFJ,PFU
This would be the 167mhz model.
For the MDD 167mhz, rev A, look for one of the following code combinations in the
last 4 digits of the serial # MXJ,ND0,ND9,NE2,NE8,NEV,NEX,NFA,NFG,
    NG1,NKT,NNR, NNS,NNW,NRC,NWK,P8S,PG2,PG3,PG4,PG5,PG6,PGI
For the MDD 133mhz, rev B, look for one of the following code combinations in the
    last 4 digits of the serial # : NF9,NG1,NNR,NRC,PG7
For the MDD 167mhz, rev. C, to determine which 167 MHz logic board is installed in the computer, check the AirPort Card connector at the edge of the board.
If there is a 2-pin fan connector on both sides of the AirPort Card
connector, it is rev.C. Otherwise use rev. A.
Look for one of the following code combinations in the
last 4 digits of the serial # :MXJ,ND0,ND9,NE2,NE8,NEV,NEX,
    NFA,NFG,NG1,NKT,NNR,NNS,NNW,NRC,NWK,P8S,PG2,PG3,
    PG4,PG5,PG6,PGI

  • Powerbook G4 1.33 thermal paste logic board swap

I'm in way over my head here swapping over a logic board on a Powerbook G4 17" 1.33, with the help of a guide at ifixit.com, ifixit has a thermal paste guide but I'm still not entirely sure on how it applies to this particular machine.
I've removed the faulty logic board and the replacement one is on standby - here's a photo of it; http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3964/logicboard.jpg As you can see on the lower part of the image, bottom left corner there is the motorola processor, then next to that approx 1.5 inches square there is a heat sink(?) and then next to that there are 4 squares with a grey diamond shape in the centre - not quite sure what this is.
The latter two have a sort of white gunky foam residue which I'm in the process of removing with a spudger. The inside of the case where these components make contact have corresponding raised shapes, I was going to clean these with Artic clean's material remover and thermal surface remover.
    Put simply then on the logic board there are two large squares and four small squares with a diamond in the middle my questions are;
    1. Should I use the Artic clean material remover and thermal surface purifier on all of these shapes.
    2. Should I spread very thinly the ArticSilver 5 over each of these components?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

some replacment boards are shipped with "thermal pads" - foam is likely leftover from the removed thermal pad, which are kind of sticky thin plastic-like pads and are glued to the chips on the board.
maybe consider getting some pads at your local computer store, if not mistaken, pad is only used on the processor chip, paste is used on video controller chip for that logic board
hard to guess what pad thikness/type is supposed to be used on that board, so maybe the paste is a better option

  • Backup not recognized after logic board swap and restore from clone

My MacBook Pro had a new logic board put in. I have an external drive that was a clone of the internal boot drive made with Carbon Copy Cloner, so I had booted my Mac Mini from the clone to continue working while the MBP was in the shop.
When I got the MBP back, I reversed the clone to updated the MBPs internal drive with changed files from the external clone.
Upon connecting the MBP's Time Machine drive, and reassigning that volume to TM, TM doesn't recognize the original backup folder as being the one to use. Instead it tries to make a new backup folder. But it fails and reports that there's not enough room on the disk.
Is there a way to manually point TM back to a particular backup folder? Or am I stuck losing those backups and having TM start over again?

V.K., thanks for pointing to the hint. I have some familiarity with Terminal, and followed the hint instructions closely. I could see that there was a new file with my new Mac address on the the TM volume. But still couldn't get my system to recognize the old backup, even after restarting and turning the TM drive off and on.
Since I didn't feel that my old files were that critical, I just went ahead and erased the TM volume and started a new backup set.

  • Hack to make serial number appear in System Profiler after logic board swap

    Hello All,
We've graduated to a slightly different topic in another thread. So, I thought I would place the current question under it's own topic in hopes that someone might see the subject and have an idea / answer.
    In the thread at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1511437#1511437
We've been discussing ways to make the serial number appear in the "About this Mac" box under the Apple Menu.
    The solution is successful.
But, is there a way to similarly make the serial number appear again in the System Profiler?
The convenience is great, and I am so used to the System Profiler that I'll remember it is there.
If anyone knows of a way (even if it has to be re-done when you install OS X again), I - and many others - would love to hear about it.
Here's hoping there is a software trick.
Thank you in advance for any ideas.

Well, after all this time, I guess there must not be a way to do this. I've since gotten another machine anyway, so it's not really an issue anymore.

  • 1Ghz TiBook - Random freezing. Logic board fault?

    Hi all,
perhaps one of you might be able to help troubleshoot this, because it's seriously driving me up the wall! I bought a used 1Ghz Titanium (DVI) recently and I'm finding that it freezes randomly when in use, requiring a comand+control restart. I've almost always experienced it in Safari, but also once in Entourage, illustrator and also in MacOS 9.2.2 Finder. Essentially what happens is that the cursor freezes and the powerbook no longer responds to keystrokes or trackpad input. I've tried an external mouse but that doesn't fix things either. The display is still lit but any moving graphics/video are frozen on screen. If music is playing in iTunes it cuts out leaving the last second of sound looping. Shortly after freezing I sometimes hear the fan come on, so perhaps there is a part of the powerbook still working after the crash (?). Also, I can select/deselect the caps lock and number lock keys and the green LEDs switch on and off, so perhaps it's not completely dead? The moment of the freeze almost always coincides with a mouse/trackpad click on the scroll bar, menu, safari menu bar, dock icon, form submit button, etc. It will on occasion freeze overnight when there is no mousing at all. generally though I can leave it playing iTunes all night and when I start using it in the morning it'll freeze when I collect my email or something.
the frequency of the freezing is semi-random; I have gone for roughly 48hrs of constant use without incident and then suddenly 2-4 crashes in short succession (ie, within about 10 mins of each other). Generally it freezes about 2 or 3 times a day. They do often come regular clumps.
Initially I thought it was Safari, or the OSX 10.4.5 installation that came with the powerbook, but I removed the entire HD and replaced it with the working drive from my Pismo and had exactly the same symptoms. Realising it was hardware related I did the usual drill of swapping, re-seating and removing ram, etc - but no dice. I've run Apple Hardware Test in a couple of 18hr loops but they return a glowing report about my hardware! techtool does likewise. I took it to the new Apple Centre in London where they ran their (apparently more powerful) AHT CD for 73 loops over 3 hours. Again, no reported errors!
I've read the long 'trackpad cable thread', and opened my powerbook to see if pinching the cable is an issue, but it's clearly not. I have lots of clearance around my trackpad cable and it's not in contact with any part of the case. I've even applied pressure all around the palmrest and the outside of my powerbook case hoping to induce a freeze but that doesn't seem to do anything.
What should I do next? when the powerbook works it's fine, but I'm at a loss as to what's causing the freezing. As a performing musician playing to hundreds of people a fault like this renders my powerbook useless since it must be absolutely stable and bullet-proof on stage.
thanks for reading and I'm grateful for any advice.
    TiBook 1Ghz (DVI)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   9600/350

    hi there,
thanks for the welcome. i've been visiting here for a while and find all the posts very useful.
the trackpad issue is an odd one; my powerbook doesn't seem to show the classic symptoms of weird startup chimes or jerky cursor movement, etc in the other thread. I nonetheless opened up the powerbook praying that I'd find a pinched cable since that would have been so easy to fix. unfortunately there's nothing about it that looks problematic.
I had also suspected heat as being an issue and searched this forum a couple of times for related posts, but couldn't find anything. When I opened the powerbook i checked the fans for obstructions and blew out any dust i could see (i didn't have compressed gas). Again, they looked fairly normal to me - i didn't spot anything obvious like a trapped cable. As far as I can tell all 3 fans come on OK. First one of them and then after some time another one or two turn on after the powerbook has been running a while. (Is it actually possible to determine whether or not they're all working?)
It's difficult to say whether heat is actually related to the freezing. certainly I often notice the fans come on before a freeze, or right afterwards, but just as many times that's not the case. what is consistant however is that the freeze occurs the instance a cursor selection is clicked.
would you say this would be resolved by a logic board swap, because I know someone selling one. On the other hand, I'm a little confused by all the error-free reports I get when I run the Apple Hardware Test for extened loops.
    thanks again for your help!

  • Logic Boards, Serial Number, and iCloud

I'm posting this because I want others who run into the same problem to find a solution - I had some difficulty pinpointing why I was having the following difficulties. Hopefully, if you're reading this, my experience will help!
So, I have two iMacs - one is a mid-2011 model, one is the model before. I upgraded both to Mountain Lion with no difficulties. However, yesterday I began tooling around with iCloud on the newer model, and found that while some iCloud features worked - like Notes and Calendar - others did not, specifically, iWork. I have had no problems syncing files between my iPhone, iPad, and other iMac, so I've been able to retrieve Pages / Keynote / Numbers files with no problems. However, with the mid-2011 model, I was getting just an empty iCloud page.
I did the basic stuff - ensured that I was signed into iCloud with the correct account, ensured I had fully-updated software, and the like - but still, I was getting no love from iCloud. I searched a few forums and checked out some ~Library folders, but everything looked correct - everything was mirroring my older iMac's setup.
I initiated a call to Apple and the front-line rep had me create a test admin login to see if there was something wonky with my user file, but the problem persisted. (By the way, talking to a rep on the phone while they initiate a screen sharing program and following their red pointer around was great). The rep quickly bumped me up to a senior person, who investigated more files. And then we hit on the solution, one I didn't think to check out because it was so obvious.
A few months back this iMac wouldn't boot up, and Apple replaced both the power supply and the logic board. However, the folks at the Genius Bar forgot to "re-serialize" my iMac - the computer was nearly fully functional, but didn't have an internal serial number after the logic board swap. It's like a two-minute step that someone forgot to do.
I brought the iMac to the Apple Store today and in two minutes they had re-serialized the iMac. When I got home, everything was working as it should - the computer has its original serial number, and iCloud worked perfectly.
So there you go. If you have some parts of iCloud working, but not others, check that serial number - iCloud uses it for some, but not all, functions. And if you're getting a logic board swap, verify that your iMac has been re-serialized. It'll save you a trip later on.

Great that you found the solution!
Make sure you unmark this as a question though.
    Regards!
    Ri-dog

  • Serial Number Missing after Logic Board Replacement

I have a xeon xserve (2007) here that had its logic board replaced under warranty. I am now trying a remote install of a new OS (10.5). While trying the first 8 of the server's original serial number as a temp password (in Server Assistant and ssh), I realized that the serial must have changed in the logic board swap. Of course, the plastic tab in the back still has the old serial and MAC addresses on it, but the guys at the repair place (tekserve) at least stuck one sticker with the new MAC address onto the back.
Now, I booted into the old OS and found that the system serial number is simply missing form System Profiler (Both GUI and CLI).
Is there a way to set a new serial? This is making the system virtually useless as a headless install.

The main board in my MacBook Pro c2d was just replaced with a board whose serial number was "System Serial#". I thought that might be the reason that Time Machine doesn't recognise my backups. I changed the serial to my original with the bootable "Blank Board Serializer , v.3T106, part number 693-6430" from
    http://spftp.info.apple.com/DiscImages/diagnostics/Apple_Service_Diagnostic/_ssps693-6430-01.dmg
Time Machine still wants to do a full backup. It has many reasons to not do what it's told.

  • Possible to swap MDD FW400 for FW800 logic board?

    Hello all,
I'd thought I would ask this question because I have been thinking about this. Currently, have a dual 1.25 2003 model(not earlier MDD!) MDD G4 with the 2MB L3 per processor.
I just received today my airport extreme USB netgear device and I must say plugged into the USB 2.0 5-port card I have it is even faster than the Belkin PCI F5D7000 card! But, my question is concerning something else.
FW800 logic board - is it really worth it for me to swap current FW400 board with the FW800 board? 2ndly, can I use my existing MDD case or do I have to find another case? My power supply is a 360w power supply. I am not sure if it is a quieter one or not. The date on my power mac G4 2003 says: copyright June 2003(or was it July?) Apple computer. - Does this entail that the FW800 machines came out the same time as mine did? Again, I don't have the original MDD(867,1gh,1.25), I have the last dual bootable OS 9.2.2 MDD machine from 2003.
Also, is the airport extreme card going to produce faster results that the netgear WG111V2.0 USB device I currently have plugged into my USB 2.0 pci card? One thing I did notice is that I can no longer put my computer into hibernation or deep sleep, since I now have the USB 2.0 netgear wireless device attached.
Can anyone confirm if there is a way around for the sleep/hibernate function to work even with the USB 2.0 device plugged in? I also removed the Belkin wireless PCI card(FD57000). Before the USB 2.0 device, my computer would goto sleep and hibernate normally.
    Thanks!

*9.x and Internet*: shouldn't be a problem with Ethernet. Forget which control panels you'll need to play with TCP/IP, Network? So if you want faster Internet with the MDD in 9.x, go with Ethernet -- the regular Airport card will work in 9.x by the way. That's the reason why for faster wireless, I'm going to buy the new Airport Express (with wireless -n), and connect via WDS to my Airport Extreme -- the MDD will connect to the Express via Ethernet which should be fine in both 9.x and OS X.
I did this once before my the original Airport Express (wireless -g) and an old Linksys all-in-one that supported WDS. But the Linksys blew its ethernet ports, so I replaced it with a newer model that doesn't support WDS.
*Copper heatsink* should fit any MDD CPU card, I've tried mine on both a Dual 867 and 1.25GHz cards, although I'm using a Verax cooler on the 1.25GHz Dual. The copper contact plate while narrow (about 1.5 cm) is a long piece, so it would contact both single and dual CPUs. As for the 1.25GHz dual in particular, see here.
Just a tip, use some good thermal compound, like Artic Silver. You'll need to clean off the old compound on your CPUs. I used Articlean (also made by Artic silver), works great. They sell a kit with both cleaner and purifier (preparation compound for the thermal compounds).
*Dual 1.25 2003*. I think the best way may be to check the model number. According to everymac.com, it should be M9145LL/A. I'm sure the info's also on Apple's site somewhere. The last 2003 1.25Ghz have 2MB L3 cache, which is easy enough to see in say System Profiler. If you're seeing 2MB L3, then you know you've got the CPU from the last 2003 model. As for the motherboard, you'd probably have to check the assembly number under the modem to insure a 2003 motherboard, but I don't think that matters as much as the CPU.
The CPU cards from MDDs and G4 XServes are pretty much interchangable --setting aside the issue of 133MHz and 167Mhz front side buses, which could overclock or underclock depending on CPU card & motherboard combination. And reading around there's an incompatibility with certain MDD Dual 1.0GHz on certain motherboards.
You could put an early 1.25GHz dual with only 1MB L3 on a 2003 MDD motherboard; for that matter you could stick a 1.42GHz dual from a FW800 MDD on your 2003 MDD motherboard, which some people have done. I guess if you're seeing Dual 1.25GHz w/1MB L3 advertised as the last 2003 MDDs, then people might not know what they're talking about, or may have replaced the CPU. The 1MB L3 versions cost less.
FW800, indeed if you want it, you can always add a card later. Since the MDDs don't have USB2, for that you'll need a card as I think you've already done. But there's always a worry of eating the slots. While rare, there are some combo USB2/FW800 cards. Problem with a combo cards over separate cards is that there's usually a performance hit on the FW side. A friend of mine has one that suffers from this -- like 7-10MB/sec hit. I recently bought a Siig combo FW800/USB2 and there's not nearly the performance hit; FW800 is only a few ticks less in MB/sec compared to my FW800 only card. In my DA, I didn't see any deep sleep issues with the Siig card, but every Mac is different. I've haven't tested it in a MDD, yet.
I'm working on getting two MDDs working (long story), so I have my hands full. Can't say I love the MDDs yet, but I certainly been bit by the tinkering/upgrading bug. So I'm have fun getting my two MDDs together that are both very close to being ready -- I need to stress test them before moving over my HDs/data, cards, etc.

  • Application crash w/new FW800 logic board

    Hi;
Two days ago I switched out the logic board in my FW400 SP 1.25 MDD dual boot tower with a used, but supposedly OK, FW800 board. Booted normally. Everything was OK for the first day. Also to note, on the first day I applied the iTunes and QuickTime updates.
Second day, I began experiencing application crashes - first w/iTunes, then Safari and iPhoto. iTunes wouldn't play more than a minute or so of a tune or MP3 file, then crashes. Safari only crashes occasionally, same for iPhoto.
Last night I opened the case while the computer was asleep. Saw a red LED glowing on the board - between the RAM slot and the video card. Never opened the case before with the O.E. board in so I don't know if the red light is normal. Did the usual repair of permissions.
Originally I left the battery in that came with the used FW800. Last night switched that out with the one from my FW400 board. Haven't experienced any Safari crashes since or tried iTunes & iPhoto but I just performed the battery switch.
Also, wondered if the system software needed to be updated to recognize the FW800 board.
My plan is to upgrade further w/the DP 1.25. Don't need dual boot function. Plan to install internal Bluetooth and Airport extreme card but haven't yet. Have both. Is the antenna kit for the Bluetooth module available?
Any suggestions you can give is appreciated!

May have answered part of my question. After installing the battery from my original FW400 board, no crashes. Ran iTunes, vids on Safari and scrolled through 1K pics in iPhoto, all at same time. CPU temp stayed at 105-106.

  • Swapping Logic Board???

    Hello Everyone
I am looking at a 600Mhz Logic Board from an iMac g3 DV I found on eBay for my 350Mhz iMac G3. Is it possible to swap them? Also, is there any documentation from Apple or somewhere on the internet that explains the process of swapping logic boards on an iMac? I just installed Tiger on my old iMac G3 and believe it or not is running pretty smoothly however it could obviously stand for an upgrade.
    Thanks, Kevin

I think your 350 can go as high as 450 or maybe 500. Above that the processor is located differently and wouldn't aline with the heat-sink. I have swapped out a 350 with a 400 without issues.

  • Can you swap G5 PPC logic board for an Intel board?

If....and I'm hoping not....I have to get a new logic board for my G5 is it possible to sawp it for an Intel version? I mean, is it possible? I'm aware of the cost and such (Procs, memory) in addition but, may possible be tempted to do it if it's do-able.

Negative, the cases look similar but internally are EXTREMELY different. Even the later ( late 2005 ) G5 are internally different than the earlier G5.

  • Would a 1.33Ghz Logic Board be a straight swap for a 1.2Ghz?

My girlfriend's 12-inch iBook has lost it's backlight and I've decided to get a new Logic Board for it. It's a 1.2Ghz, 256mb built in ram, Radeon 9200 32mb board. Could I replace it with the 1.33Ghz, built in 512mb, Radeon 9550 32mb board? They look identical from the pictures I've looked at.

The screen module is the half of the iBook that doesn't have a keyboard/trackpad They can be purchased quite cheaply, due to iBooks dying for other reasons, and people parting them out.
If the inverter has failed, things will still display on the screen, and everything will work, but you won't have any backlight, so you'll only be able to see them in really bright sunlight (ok, you live in wales, this might be hard to find or a strong flashlight pointed at the screen.

  • Swapping Logic Boards

I bought a G5 Logic Board off of eBay and am having a bit of difficulty booting up.
I can get into Open Firmware, the boot selection screen, and boot up Apple Hardware Test and Apple Service Diagnostics, but not OS X or the installer. The board passes a quick test in AHT. In ASD, when I try to run a thermal calibration, I am told something is wrong with CPU 0's EEPROM. Most tests in ASD pass as well (ethernet failed, but I didn't plug in a cable).
What also concerns me is that the Firmware on the board is 5.1.5 f0, which seems to be for uniprocessor G5 machines. Everything tells me I only have 1 CPU. AHT tells me that the CPU is 1.152GHz, when it's a 2GHz CPU. The board has two CPU slots.
My original board has the part number 630-4848 on it. The new board says 630-6395.
Any ideas as to what's going on? Did I get the wrong board?

    Dear Squirrel2,
Yes, you really need exactly the same board you're replacing. The board is, I suppose, trimmed for the 1,8 GHz duo processor G5 (otherwise you wouldn't be able to connect both processors), therefore the firmware doesn't 'know' the 2 GHz processors and is, as reported in your first input, sabotaging other processes at the same time.
Other question before you're 'throwing more water into the sea', as we say over here: are you sure both your processors were fine before you replaced the logic board?
Only the late 2005 model is more easy: only two different boards, one for both single dualcore versions and a second for the quadcore.
Success finding the right (vintage) part and best regards,
    Robbert

  • Swapping macbook logic boards

Hi there, is it possible to put a logic board from a macbook 4,1 into a macbook 3,1?
    Thanks

Crazy isn't it? That's just the nature of replacement parts though. I remember seeing something a while ago talking about the same thing relating to the auto industry.
It would cost like 10X as much to buy a car with replacement parts than the car costs new.
I'm thinking I saw someone here saying the screen for these things is $1200! That's just insane.
