Logic+digidesign 192+Motu 828MKII: lightpipe or not?

I'm thinking of stopping with the combination DAE+DTDM and switch to DAE+Core audio+Motu 828 MKII.
My questions:
- Does core audio with 828 MKII sounds better than DTDM with digi 192?
- Is DAE+Core audio more stable than DAE+DTDM?
- Is it sufficient that I install the Motu Core Audio driver and connect the 828 MKII with firewire to my mac?
- What about clock with the combination 828MKII , 192, 2x96i, 1x96?
I heard about connecting the 192 and the 828MKII with lightpipe.
My questions:
- How do I have to do make this connection? One way lightpipe?
- Do I keep with a lightpipe-connection all my 192 in-and outputs for DAE?
- Do I have to change settings in the hardware setup settings of my 192?
- What are the advantages of a lightpipe-connection in stead of connecting the 828MKII just with firewire?

Hey Wim,
Tuur here. I have done these combos for multiple customers, lately for Evert Verhees. It works. If you need info, you still have my phone number, no?
If not, ask Mill.

  • MacBook, Logic Pro 8 & MOTU 828mkII (FW400):  int or ext 7200rpm drive?

    Hi,
I think I'm finally ready to solidify my setup.
    My question is:
Since the MacBook only has one FW400 jack, is it better to run and Logic's Content on an internal 2.5 7200 drive OR on the external firewire drive, which is daisychained through the MOTU 828mkII. Also, since the internal is 7200, would it be a good idea to record to it also?
The reason that I'm asking this is because I'm scared about latency between the ext drive and the interface.
Does anyone have a similar setup or knowledge on this type of situation? I'm wondering is updating my internal drive to a seagate 7200 160GB will be worth it.
    Thanks in Adavance. Geoff

You're absolutely right. I have the same Saffire Pro and the same problems on all my Intel Macs.
Daisy chaining worked flawless on my older Powerbooks with the Same interface. Even copying a stupid file from a hard-drive while playing a stupid MP3 would let the Saffire go ape ;-(
I tried opening a support ticket but Focusrite said it was a normal issue because of the contention on the Firewire bus. I guess they apply double standards when it comes to Intel Macs, since there were no problems on PowerPC macs. There's something different about the Firewire chip on the Intel Macs, that's for sure.
I bought a RME Fireface 400 and this interface does not have the same problems.
See this article if you want to know more about Firewire audio chips:

  • Fixed a problem with OSX-Logic and a MOTU 828MkII

I was having problems with my 828MkII using it with a new G5 and OS10.3.9. There were massive drop-outs.
It was a new computer and everything was installed correctly and cleanly - there was no other hardware installed other than the MOTU, and no other software other than Logic 7 - everything was done properly and tested over and over, but the problem persisted.
I still had my old G4 with an older OS9 version of Logic, and when I went back to try the MOTU with this set up, it worked flawlessly. This fact made me suspect that the core audio driver was the problem, so I tried all the tricks I've seen in forums - reset the MOTU - uninstalled and re-installed. Upgraded my firmware. Even tried OS10.4 with old drivers new drivers, and still nothing worked.
Then out of desperation I tried a new firewire cable and everything worked fine.
I went back and tried the set up on my OS9 machine a few times and the MOTU worked flawlessly under the Asio2 drivers. What I learned is that OSX and core audio must use firewire differently because the cable did not work with that set up.
I couldn't believe it. It's like finding out that a guitar cable only works with a Les Paul or something wierd like that.
I'm sure someone out there must know the technical difference and why this cable works fine under OS9 (Asio2) but not OSX (core audio).
I'm posting this because if I had read such a post - I would have tried a new cable as the first thing - but I had myself convinced that it could not be the cable. I still don't believe it. ! Luckily it was the cheapest fix.
    Scott.

Same thing happened here when I check all items to install at once.
After the installation failure , L7,L8,Waveburner .. everything unexpectedly quit then I decided to replace the entire OS to cloned back up.
I tried the installation again and xxxx happened again. This time, I installed only applications (overwritten) again and it fixed the problem.
Then I installed only JamPack on FW and went smoothly.
I called Apple Tech and now I am waiting for the new installer DVDs of Audio contents only by regular mail.
Hey, do we have similar serial number?? Apple script got damaged or something? I have no idea.

  • Logic Pro 9 - MOTU MK II inputs not available in channel strip

I usually use a MOTU 24 i/o as my main Logic Pro 9.1.5  audio interface. I'm trying to use a MOTU MK II and it is connected via firewire. It shows up fine in the Logic > Audio > core audio driver preference and is checked on. However the MKII in/outs are not available on Logic's channel strip inputs and outputs. Logic still shows the 24 i/o's even though the 24 i/o is not selected in audio preferences and is not even turned on.
I've reinstalled the latest MOTU drivers, trashed Logic's preferences and restarted my MacPro but it is still the same. Only the 24 i/o available in the channel strip input and output.
Is there a second audio i/o setting that I'm missing?
My Mic is registering OK in the MKII so I know it is getting a signal.
    Thanks,
    Richard

For some reason Logic is listing the 24 i/o inputs.
I've renamed the 828 Mk2 1 & 2  inputs to Vox 1 and Vox 2.  The MK2 has 8 analog inputs plus two mic/line inputs for a total of ten audio inputs, not 14 as listed in the channel strip input drop down.
Audio registers in and out of the Mk2 but does not register in Logic's channel strip input. I just switched back to the 24 i/o to test and audio registers fine in Logic's channel strip input with the 24 i/o. Just not with the MK2 selected as the audio source.
I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem or if I'm missing an audio input setting somewhere.
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • LOGIC PRO 8 with motu 828mkII audio interface

I have bought a MOTU 828mkII Firewire and I am using it with a Mac Pro Intel
dual core v. 10.4.10 running Logic Pro 8.
My mixer is a Yamaha DM-1000. I have a problem with audio.
I have the mac going into the 828 via a firewire cable, then out of the 828 to
the mixer using 8 channel adat lightpipe. All devices have the same 48k sampling
rate but I can not hear a logic virtual instrument, like a piano, using the adat
lightpipe interface. If I use the analog "main outs" on the 828 I have audio,
but nothing comes thru the adat output. If I use another application besides Logic with the same setup, the adat connection works fine. This leads me to think the problem has to be in Logic and how it interfaces with the Motu 828mkII. I have read all manuals and can't figure
    out what's wrong. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Pierre.

Generally, outputs on audio interfaces are discreetly named. So, if your master output is set to Output 1&2, that might refer to your analog outputs. If you want to send the a different set outputs, say, a stereo pair via ADAT, you might need to send to outputs 5&6, instead of 1&2.

  • Sound output pops/clicks/silence Logic & Motu 828mkII & G5 Quad

    Mac OS 10.4.3 G5 Quad 3.5Gb ram Logic 7.2.3 Motu 828mkII
When I've got a lot of automation going on, sometimes the sound output cuts out briefly, I hear a small pop or click on the monitors and I have to press stop on Logic to get the audio back online. It only started a couple of weeks ago after a heavy tracking session.
I've done the obvious - repair permissions, checked the wordclock (internal/external), changed the buffer settings, removed third party plugs (only Stylus and Waves)...
As it's an intermittent anomaly I've not had the courage to reinstall everything.
    Anyone got any ideas ?
    G5 Quad, G5 2x2.5,G4 2x867, MacBook 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   logic,reason,sibelius,plugs...

I have the same setup. I think this is more of a "lot of automation going on" issue than a MOTU issue.
How did you do the automation? I would suggest manually adding the automation points (with the pencil) instead of using the "latch" (or whatever) feature.
Also, depending on how much MIDI I have running, I might have to "freeze" some of my MIDI tracks to free some resources. You will probably need to do the same.
I'm not sure about your plugs. There's no way that I know of to profile individual plugs for resource usage. Personally, I use the plugs that come with Logic mostly. I use Ozone in the last part of my workflow for bouncing. And sometimes, I use Melodyne. But, no issues here on fairly large projects (by my standards - 16 audio / 20 MIDI tracks). I do have to freeze a lot of the MIDI though. Ohhh, and sometimes I will bounce the MIDI track to a audio file and create another audio track.

  • MOTU 828mkII and Logic Problems

Mac G5 OSX 10.4.6 Logic Pro 7.1.1 MOTU 828mkII I've installed the new driver for the firewire software for the MOTU, I've reset factory settings, i've double checked and triple checked the internal clock settings. I am still getting distortion and high pitched whistles and error message. This happend once before but after installing the new driver things worked fine. Now i'm not getting anywhere. Thanks for any help !!!!

Just a note, I've had this problem as well with the MoTu 828ii. There is an issue with this system not functioning properly with Pro Logic 7.1. Out of the blue, I start getting a message "Midi and Audio out of synch" messages, and there is no sound. I tried downloading the latest driver, no go.
I called the MoTu people and they aren't very helpful with their system's conflict with Pro Logic. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying the Motu at this point. I'm thinking of Apogee if I can't get this thing running soon.

  • I am having trouble with Logic 7 and my Motu 828mkII

I am running Logic Pro 7 with a MOTU 828mkII. Logic is not seeing the audio signal from any of the rear analog inputs on my 828. The 828 is receiving the signal and I have fiddled with cuemix to make sure everything is as it should be. Motu support said that it was a logic issue, in spite of that, I sent the unit back to them to fix it and it returned with the same issue, that it is working but logic is not. I am doing something wrong. . . please tell me what it is. thanks!

What do you have selected in the drivers menu in audio hardware prefs?

  • Digidesign 192 units with Logic Pro X

Hi- is it possible to use 2/3 Digidesign 192 units with Logic Pro X or am i still relegated to 8 ch in/out w the D. core audio driver? I recently bought an Universal Audio Apollo 16 that I can use for mixing/editing on my iMac or MacBookPro but I have 2 192 units and am thinking of buying another to run on an 2009 Mac Pro for live recording or would I be better off just selling the 192's and purchasing another Apollo 16for 32 tracks for live recordings?
I could only get 8 ch in/out with LP 9 and will need more inputs for the live recording rig and would rather use Logic than PT 8.
    Thanks!

Logic Remote detects Logic Pro via Bonjour, which is done via a technology called "DNS Multicast". AirPlay, etc. all work this way. Make sure it has the most recent firmware and maybe google for issues with it.

  • Do you know if the Digidesign 192 will work with Logic Pro X?

Hi everybody! The question is simple, maube the answer too... Do anyone know if the Digidesign 192 I/O will (completely) work with Logic Pro X or if it needs other devices (such as controllers, internal or external card, etc.)? Thank you all.

    Hi Jacub,
I have a 2i4 running Mavericks 10.9.2 on a Mac Book Pro, and my unit works properly, please make sure your run the unit with the class compliant mode app (click the link below):

  • Motu 828MkII or Traveler

    Hey All
I am looking at purchasing either a Motu 828MkII or Traveler. I have read some of the threads on the board and I am starting to get discuraged! Is Motu No Good for Logic Pro? I really like the expandability and their features, but is it worth it? I am currently running a G5 1.8 Duo OS X (10.4.4) w/2Ghz and a M-Audio FW410. What do you all think? Motu or Not to Motu?

Hi Dave - know what you mean. Got an 896HD myself and it took a lot of getting used to from my 002, the top end is too harsh in comparison. But I'm used to it now. But then again, when mixing I do compensate for the sound it gives me (which isn't applied to mix-down). Not ideal, I know, but for the features, ease of use, the price I paid, I couldn't find anything better (and the fact MOTU are very quick at releasing updates for Apple OS is a real bonus). I suppose it's each to their own. But I agree with the point you made - check out what's available, listen to them and decide - but you MUST really listen on the monitors you're going to use with it.

  • MOTU 828mkII and 10.4.10

    Hi -
    My question has two parts...
    1. I just had to have the logic board in my iMac replaced for the second time because of the firewire being shorted out. Apple said this is an extremely rare repair (twice in less than a year for me). The only firewire components I use are a Lacie external hard drive and a MOTU 828mkII. Can't imagine the hard drive is doing anything. Is it possible that the MOTU is somehow damaging the the firewire port / logic board?
    2. I just brought my iMac back from being serviced by the Apple store (to have the logic board replaced). Without my permission they installed 10.4.10 and LP 7.2.3 (I had been fine using 10.4.9 and 7.2.2). Now nothing is working. The MOTU is not being recognized. LP is crashing when I hit play. Even my bluetooth mouse and keyboard don't seem to be working. I installed the combo update as some people suggested in other posts and still no improvement.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
20" iMac 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Logic Pro 7.2.3, MOTU 828mkII interface

I've used the 828mkII with a G4 and now a Mac Pro running OS 10.4.10 and LP 7.2.3, so it can be done.
I have no idea what went wrong with your Firewire port--haven't heard of that one.
First thing to check re: getting the MOTU box back up would be the Firewire driver: are you running 1.4.3 ? If not, I'd download it from MOTU and try that: it may be that older MOTU drivers don't work with 10.4.10.
    Good luck!

  • Motu 828mkII Headphone Routing

Anyone with a Motu 828mkII who can tell me how and where you route your Mains (output 1-2) and phones (13-14) so that you get the same signal for monitoring/reference playback.
I'd like to check my mix in the phones but can't get signal without setting up another output pair, rerouting, etc.
I read another posting that encouraged the writer away from setting this up in Logic. I have tried my audio/midi settings and also the Motu settings with no avail.
    Any help would be great!

    Andy,
It sounds as if you have the Phones 'channel' in the MOTU Firewire Audio Application set to the wrong channels.
    Go to Applications>MOTU Firewire Console.
The bottom option is Phones. Set this to "Main OUT 1-2"
Click/Press the Volume knob on your MOTU
It will toggle between MAIN OUT and Phones. The level you route from Logic to Output 1-2 affects both these outputs.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sync error w/MOTU 828mkII

I just got my copy of Logic Pro after getting really miffed at MOTU last week. So...
I'm having a problem. I keep getting sync error messages. The tutorial song is fine, but when I try to start a new file, it plays a few bars and then distorts and drops out altogether. Even if I add a track in the tutorial song this happens.
I'm guessing it's either an incorrect setting or a bad driver.
    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.4.7
    MOTU 828mkII
    Logic 7.2.2
Now, it's possible that MOTU wrote a bad driver for the Intel Macs. If that's the case, I'm going to go postal on them because they are part of the reason I switched to Logic in the first place.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

    Hi
Is it possible you might be having word clock problems? check to see that you have only one word clock source - probably easiest to make it your 828, and have everything sync to that. Of course I could be totally wrong, and it could be the MOTU intel drivers!
I have my Yamaha digi desk, studio mac and MOTU connected and have the MOTU send word clock via ADAT to the desk, and by Firewire to the mac. I figured it would play Daddy, by being in the middle of the chain. It also negates the need for me to get hold of BNC cables and run dedicated word clock signal.

I think the error is indicated in TUXLOG file "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password". The application password "myname" in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page is not working. I use the same password "myname" to login Data Mover Bootstrap mode, Application Designer, and Application Server psadmin configuration successfully. I have tried a few other passwords in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page but not working.
    My question is:
How to solve Sign In issue on http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html that is "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password" ?
    Thanks.

    Dear Nicolas,
Hello. I have used the same password for "DomainConnectPswd" in the file Configuration.properties with that for Application Server setting. Eventually, UserID PSADMIN sign in http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html successfully. PeopleTools 8.53 runs correctly in Browser.
It seems that whether upgrade Oracle Linux 5.0 to the latest 5.10 does not have effect !
I am very grateful to your great help for this installation of PT8.53 with Linux and Oracle Database !
