Logic Express 7 vs. ProTools LE 7

Can anyone reccomend a resource for comparing these 2? I need to pick up something like MBox2 with Protools LE package, or a comparable hardware interface (preferably firewire) with Logic Express.
Any personal recommendations? I will mostly be recording guitar/bass/vocals (probably 2 mics used at once max).
Thanks very much!!!

well obviously you can use Logic with the MBox as well. I use an MBox running both Pro Tools LE and Logic, and aside from not being able to open both at the same time (which isn' t that much of a problem) i find it a good working set up. each program is good for very different things. Logic is intuitive and superb for sequencing, Pro Tools is the master (in my opinion) for audio. there is some latency issue with Logic through the MBox, though no problems at all with ProTools.
as an alternative the Focusrite Saffire interface is superb, very similar to the MBox, but with the added inclusion of it being Firewire (which i don't understand why MBox2 isn't). i've a feeling Focusrite actually make the MBoxes, but i'm not sure. anyway, perfect for your need, portable and with mic pre amps and guitar inputs. but you cannot use PT LE with it, only Logic.
good luck

  • Compatability of Logic Express and Protools with Mbox2

I see others have found this incompatiblity between protools and Logic Express. I've downloaded the driver which allows using Mbox2 as a standalone interface. Still crashing occurs. Do I have to ditch Mbox2? Any suggestions guys?

I think for both questions the answer is www.digidesign.com -> pro tools -> community forum

    Hello,
Yes, add such effects using the insert slots on the track strip.
Click on the slot, choose your plugin from the list. Double click to bring up its control window to set parameters.

  • Logic Express to Pro Tools for mixdown

    Hi!
Really sorry if this topic has been covered before, but all I can find on the various Logic boards I know of are ways of doing this in Logic Pro that aren't available in Express.
My band recorded an EP in Logic Express, which was great, but the engineer we'd like to use to mix it is Pro Tools-only. I know Pro Tools can load up AIF files, but the problem I have is that each track has different start and end points. If I gave him the individual tracks as is, we'd be spending all day synching them up.
I've thought of two ways I can prepare the files for him. Please let me know if they're ********.
    1) Setting the fader at unity (0) and bouncing each track individually to a 24 bit WAV or AIF file while the rest are muted.
    2) Manually cutting and pasting "fake" beginnings and endings of audio information to each track, then using the Glue tool to create a new, merged track. This way, I figure, each track should be in perfect synch with the rest.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks! Rufe.

    Hi,
    half ok,
bounce one by one to a folder (mute the other tracks) from the start to the finish, PCM 24 bit (44.1 if you going to make cd's), WAV, SDII or AIFF,
that way, all files start and finish in the same spot, Inside Protools you cut the silence parts and don't forget to place a dither plug-in in the master-fader.

  • Is Logic Express worth it???

I am building a quality (humble) recording studio off of an iMac G5; I will be using the M-Audio FireWire 1814 as my audio interface and Pro Tools M-Powered as my main recording application; however, I have learned that there can be some advantages to having more than 1 audio/midi sequencer on a machine.
I am about to order the iMac G5 and my question is:
-- is it worth it to pay the extra $200-300 to have logic express installed when I will be using ProTools?
-- are Logic Express's MIDI capabilities strong enough to use over Pro Tools?
-- what are the main differences between logic express and logic pro (other than $700, or should I wait to invest in that also)?
-- in practice, when would Logic Express be helpful when working with ProTools?
I am new to recording with a MAC; Logic Express seems like it could be helpful, but I'm just worried that I'd be spending $300 on something I'd already have with ProTools.
    Thank you,
    ~Nicholas

    Hi Nicholas,
The general consensus is that logic is far easier to use than PT when you have any decent amount of midi to deal with.
If you are going to use plenty of virtual instruments, then I think it will be worthwhile for you to have logic.
As for the pro version, you get a whole bunch of virtual instruments bundled with it, plus the ability to use more than 12 inputs, and a bunch of extra editing options and plugins etc. etc.
If you goto www.apple.com/logicexpress you should find a link to a comparison list between express and pro.
Having said all that, PT is a great programme (even though i prefer logic) and you may find that the best course of action is to get used to working with what you have before lashing out on more software.

  • Logic express 7.2.1 with Tascam US-122 issue

Im running Mac OS X 10.4.7 on a Powerbook 1.67 Ghz PowerPC G4 with 512 in RAM. My software is Logic Express 7.2.1.
I've installed the latest drivers to my USB external audio device Tascam US-122: 3.4.0 found on Tascam's website.
Here is the problem: I need to use sample rates (I/O buffer size) 512 or 1024 otherwise it starts to "crackle" and telling "system overload". With my new latop it should run on 64 or even 32.
    - Any help what the problem is?
I have tried both re-installing logic express and us-122 drivers.

    Hi Niili,
I have the same problem with a digi drivers too,
I didn't have a clue on how to to deal with iet,

When I use Protools Le, I can have lower buffers without problem,
    not with logic!
It problably have to do with the drivers.

I'll hope the you do the same if you discover a turn around it.

  • Logic Express 7.2.1 + MacBook: sleep problem?

Here's the thing: I'm using Logic Express on my MacBook, and it works just fine (a few audio tracks and Logic softsynths). However, if I put the machine to sleep with Logic still open, the next time I wake the machine, there is no sound generated from Logic! The meters all show activity, but I can't hear anything...
I have tried restarting the Core audio driver within Logic, but this makes no difference; the only solution is to quit Logic and restart, at which point it all works fine again...
Anyone else found this problem? I'm not using any external devices, just built-in audio.
    Thanks,

  • Less oppertunities for compressors in Logic Express  compared to Logic Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm running on L-Express also. I had a conversation with a guy this afternoon who is running Protools.
We've tried to put some compressors on my created track. In protools he could let a compressor follow the beat of the bass drum and put that effect on, for instance, the hi hat so that you could create a nice pumping sound. We've tried to look for it in Logic Express but unfortunatly we couln't find it.
Is this also a difference between Logic Express and Logic Pro?
    grtz,
    Lewis

    Hey Lewis,
I believe you must be talking about a multi band compressor, that you can use High or low pass filters, the one in logic Le isn't, you just have one in AU from the system.
Logic Pro has multi band compressor and then some!
Anyway, Logic Le compressor has some presets that can help you click on arrow tool (in the compressor) and you have presets for Vocal, Instruments,Drums ie: Kick drum - Double punch.
    Give it a go.
    cheers,
    Jorge

  • Will Logic Express export all tracks in mono?

Will be mixing a Logic Express project in ProTools, but can't seem to find a way to export all tracks mono.
At first I thought I must be overlooking something obvious, but am beginning to think it's not possible.

I should add that if you do, in fact, actually want to export mono files you need to:
    1) solo the track you want to export
    2) change the output in the channel strip to mono
    3) click on the bounce button on the output strip
    4) repeat for each track

  • How to work with Logic Express 8 and Garageband 11 v.6.0.4?

I just installed Logic Express 8 and I don't know what it's done to my existing Garageband files - they seem to have been overwritten into Logic folders. I don't seem to be able to open them in either program. I'm sure there are answers buried in the files here, but I'd appreciate a quick How To, please! Can't work.

You need more to be sure the Digidesign core audio drivers are installed for your MBox, which are separate from the firmware upgrade.
A standalone installer for the OS X (10.4) drivers can be found at:
    http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=100&navid=54&itemid=24268
While I'm glad to hear you're using Logic, your iMac should have no problem running ProTools LE. The current version, 7.3, has universal binary support for the new intel Macs .... dependign on the version you have, though, you may need to pay a small amount to upgrade to 7.3 The updaters for 7.3 also include the core audio driver package I mentioned above, and the ProTools LE 7.3 updaters can be found at:

  • How do I upgrade to Logic Pro from Logic Express?

When I decided to dump ProTools and go with Logic, it was easy because Express was pretty cheap and there was always an upgrade path to Logic Studio. Now it's version 9 and I don't see an option to upgrade to Logic Pro 9 from Logic Express 9. Can you guys help me out here?

Based on the replies in the Logic Express forums, it looks like I'll just have to suck it up until Logic 10 comes out.
I think I would feel totally hosed if it weren't for the fact that I recently got Komplete 8 Ultimate, so I don't really care for the Logic synths.

  • MOTU 828 and Logic Express 7

I have a MOTU 828 purchased new in early 2002. Software is Audio Desk. Two questions:
    1. Is there any reason to get Logic Express 7?
    2. Is the MOTU 828 hardware compatible with Logic Express 7 as an interface through which to plug in instruments/mics?

The 828mk2 is a great soundcard. As for audiodesk... Here's the low down. Both Logic Express and Audio Desk are cut down applications from their 'pro' level apps which are Logic Pro and Digital Performer. I use DP for film editing, and I like it, but it is very different from Logic. I have tried using Audiodesk, and I found some of its limitations annoying after using DP. For example, it doesn't have its consolidated window which for me, and I think many others will agree, is DPs USP. Logic express is much less crippled in this way - the interface is exactly the same as Pro, and many things that Pro can do, Express can do too. There are a few very annoying omissions which is why I eventually upgraded, but Express is a great app. You might also find Audiodesks interface a little difficult at first - it's more geared towards the ProTools look of things. Then again, some people say they find Logic completely illogical. Ultimately it's entirely personal opinion, but I would go for Logic, if only for the synths and plugins. Hope this helps, and nice one for getting an awesome soundcard! Best, Fred

  • Logic Express for news recording and editing?

Based on the recommendation of many friends who work in public radio I bought a Digidesign M-Box 2 Mini and got ProTools to use for doing audio editing on news and spoken word projects. The thing has been a real pain in the butt causing me hundreds of system crashes and endless problems with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). Digidesign has admitted that their M-Box driver is defective but they can't fix the current drivers 'cause they are soooo busy working on support for Snow Leopard (Which they may deliver sometime in Spring 2010). ProTools also requires that you have the M-Box connected to your system in order to launch the program.
I'm fed up with being forced to connect a defective interface to my laptop every time I want to use ProTools and ready to try something else. Are the audio editing tools in the new Logic Express 9 good enough to use for this kind of work?
I could almost get away with using Garage Band but it's a bit limited with support for only 16-bit audio (most news sources are pretty quiet and need boosting) and the GB interface makes me crazy.

I think Logic is overkill for what you need - you'll never use 95% of it for recording/editing spoken word audio files.
Although I'm not familiar with manipulating audio for news use, I'd think that something like Amadeus Pro would do the job.
    http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadeusPro/AmadeusPro.html
with an interface such as an AudioFire like this:
    http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php
which is very good quality, reliable, and not expensive.
BTW, recent versions of GarageBand do support 24-bit recording.

  • Logic Express 6 new user

    Hi Guys
I had a copy of logic express 6(6.4.0) that i didnt use for ages as i was using protools, after a couple of days working with a friend i realised i should have started using it before....
So ,anyway, I install the software(i bought it as part of a deal with a PowerMac G4),put the Xkey on the usb port, stared it,.... and it works!!!!
The xkey shows that i have authorized logic audio 5 and 6 and the ES1,aside from that there is few expired demos on the xkey(ES2,EXS24 MkII,EVP 88.....etc etc)
Also the copy of logic was not registered so, i have all documentation STILL adressed to emagic, were shoul i send it now?, even the Xkey points at emagic website when i hit the register online or product info online buttons at the Xkey preference pane on my powerbooks System preferences, even after upgrading the xkey firmware still points at emagic......
So i need ,please, for somebody to point out were i should call/email or contact regarding support, upgrades etc etc, as emagic doesent exists and apples logic pages are all about logic 7 either pro or express, and honestly i find them very hard to understand........
Also and as a last request i need the "demo or tutorial song" that was supossed to be included on the install,I need it as all the manuals and explanations on the Express 6 manuals are very related to that song, i have looked for it everywere, only thing i found is a bunch of them on a japaneese web page and i dont know what one is it..........
I hope am not asking for much at one time ,thanks in advance

    Hi Guys
still here, if anybody could help please regardi9ng this tutorial song.....
    many thanks

  • MIDI editing with Logic Express (Thinking about buying Express)

I currently use GarageBand to write songs using MIDI. When I want to finalize a song, I use Pro Tools to give it some gentle limiting. I'd use Pro Tools exclusively, but I find GB so easy to use that I can't see myself bothering with PT for MIDI.
How are the MIDI editing capabilities on Logic Express? How would they compare in terms of ease of use versus GarageBand (and Pro Tools, for that matter)? Is there another program out there that's great for MIDI editing/programing? Can GarageBand export MIDI (I doubt, though...).
[ I wish I could use the software instruments found (free) in Pro Tools with GarageBand, seeing as how I'd have a little more to choose from and a bit higher quality. How would you rate the software intruments found in Logic Express? ]
MacBook (2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 677 MHz)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   GarageBand & Pro Tools

    Hi Jose,
My version of Protools is 6.4, so the midi editing in Logic Express,
is far better, if you like GarageBand you'll probably Love Express,
apart from the learning curve everything's better.
Better than Express only Logic pro.
Every sound you have in GB you have in Logic ( I believe they share the same audio engine) but with the benefit the plug-ins (32 bits internal process it sounds better) also you can twick the sounds, plus you have Soft synths and sampler with loads of new sounds.
    Cheers,
    Jorge
