Logic Express 9 vs M-Audio Axiom Keyboard

Hi all,
I'm a high school music teacher who currently uses Logic Express personally, and we are about to upgrade our recording software at school to macs (hooray) with Logic Pro 9.
The issue I seem to be having is trying to get the Axiom keyboard and Logic Express talking to each other.
Sure I plug it in and can play notes etc. but when trying to get the program to learn the record, play buttons on the keyboard, it doesn't seem to like it. I can bind some keys and knobs bot not the play controls or some other important ones.
Just wondering if this is solvable, its no biggie, but would make things easier at work and home.
Will also troll through various Logic forums for a solution as well.
If there is already a discussion on this, please feel free to post the address in a reply.
thanks!

I found this same problem, and still having problems. What is really astonishing to me still is that there has not been anyone that has created a template for all the basics.
Drum Pads should play drum sounds.
Keyboard should play a keyboard.
The transport buttons should stop, play, pause, etc...
all of this at least by default
I've had my axiom for almost a year, and keep revisiting creating a template but always to no avail. I've come close to getting some of the knobs to control some of the features such as Freq cut off... but I can't seem to get my head around the exponential +/- issue.
I'm so frustrated with them. As it keyboard it's black and white and instantly works but as a controller, I feel despite being an electronic musician for over 20+ years - this is beyond my comprehension.
I swear if I ever get it figured out or find solid templates to build from I will post them for everyone everywhere... it shoud not be this difficult to have a basic functionality from a controller as simple as the Axiom.
the learn function only half works it seems

  • Logic Express Create MIDI from Audio Voice Track

Is it possible to take a sung voice recording and generate a MIDI track in Logic Express? I don't need to replicate the voice in the MIDI track, but would like the pitches and rhythms for editing in Finale.

That is a brilliant request, I'd love to see an answer to this myself. I've thought of this type of feature in the past and seen that there are tools out there that can convert audio from a guitar or other instrument to create midi - so the technology is there - the question is can Logic do it? hmmm curious too.

  • Does Logic Express work with M-Audio Fast Track USB

Hi all, just wondering if logic express 8 works with the m-audio Fast Track USB - http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB.html ?

This should probably go in the Logic Express 8 forum. Regardless, I see no reason why it wouldn't be perfectly functional using LE8. Is there a reason why you are opting for a USB device? Does your Mac not have a firewire port?

  • Logic Pro 8 with M-audio Axiom?

I'm about to buy an axiom (m-audio), but I was wondering if it's compatible with Logic Pro 8?

  • Logic Express W/Axiom Keyboard Controller

Does anyone know how to configure the M-Audio Axiom keyboard so the knobs will react to the knobs and sliders of the Logic instruments?

To set up your transport buttons you...
    1. go to you preferences and click on key commands at the bottom
2.click on the Global Commands drop down menu
3.click on "play" in the Global Commands drop down menu and highlight it.
4.look over to the right in the section labeled "MIDI"
5.click on the "learn midi" button at the bottom of that section
6.click on the play button on your axiom keyboard...
now repeat the process to link all other commands to whatever you want....
    I hope this was helpful...
If you figure out which command will link the rotary encoders to the individual track volumes in the mixer then let me know....

  • Logic Express - Help

    Hello All --
I'm having a bit of an oddity and am looking to see what information that anyone can give me.
    My configuration is simple -
Mic thru cable into Alesis multimix 12 - To this point I get a great signal and all is working as I think it should be.
Multimix out thru firewire into Mac G4 dual processor (1.25 GHz I believe w/ 1GB RAM and too much HD OS X.4.8) using Logic Express 7.2 as audio software - what reads as "0" on the multimix is -22/-244 as received by the software - basically my signal *****.
Tried using Garage Band instead - still el sucko
Tried using Steinberg Cubase LE - still el sucko
So my question is - anyone have any idea what is killing the signal? I know this is digital audio and a little different than analog - but this just seems wrong in so many ways.
I've tried many different Firewire cables and have even tried a different computer - still no levels - what gives?
    Greg
    many Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi aalkemist,
Then, pehaps, your signal needs to be amplified a little more before, reaching Logic. On the Alesis, can you turn it up more on the input? Without going over of course.
Some meters in the "real world" reflect different dB readings. I won't go inot details on that,as the vultures might descend on this...
Suffice to say, that I have one good example of hardware VS software meters.
I own a focusrite trak master preamp. The older one with LED output meter.
It is calibrated so that when the LED meter reads -18dB,I get approximately -8 dBFS on the Logic meters. dBFS means "decibels full scale" and there is no going over 0 on this scale.so when I track with this preamp,I can only have the LED meter read up to -8dB,or else it clips the input to Logic.
Now,in your case, the "real world" meters might be calibrated to a different level.
I would suggest you do the following test,to see what the levels read in the Alesis, and what they read in Logic, when feeding a known signal:
1.in logic insert a "tone generator/oscillator" plugin to a channel, and output it channel 1 only (mono out) and set the level to,say, -20dBFS
2.take a lead cable from output 1,and wire it up to another input, say input 3 on your Alesis.Make sure the input level on the alesis is not cranked up all the way,but at -0-
3.place another channel on input, with input 3.check to see what the Logic meter is telling you.If there is a difference, note it,and check the Alesis manual,to see what their reference levels are.
From this, you'll know what levels to feed the alesis,in order to get an optimal recording level, and also at what levels both the alesis box and Logic clip at.
    Cheers

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • External keyboard only now and then work in Logic Express. Why?

I use a Roland JX 305 Synthgroove as keyboard with Logic Express. If I want to use it as Audio instrument, -using the sounds that are in Logic available - It only works now and then. I can play the keyboard, but after i changed a setting or switched shortly to another track, I have to start up Logic again, before I can get any music out of the keyboard. How come?

  • Entering tablature for audio track in Logic Express 9

    Hi,
When recording an audio track in Logic Express 9, I'd like to manually enter tablature for the recorded piece. After reading the manual and some tweaking, I still have a couple of questions about this:
    1. It seems one can only enter tablature for midi tracks, so I end up adding a fake midi track, muting it, then entering tablature on that midi track. Is there an easier approach?
    2. Is there a way to enter whole chords at once in the tab track instead of first having to enter each note of a chord separately, then copy/pasting that chord to all places I need it? (I know one can add chord symbols, but these are just text symbols that do not have rhythm notation.)
    3. It seems that the tablature editor in Logic Express supports only a limited number of fingerings, i.e., one cannot add a note on the 6th fret of the 6th string, as this is automatically turned into the 1st fret on the 5th string. Can this be changed?
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi,
    To answer your questions,
    1. I'm sorry, but there is no easier way. Since the "audio to score" function (where you let Logic interpret the notes in the audio and makes midi out of it) hasn't fully matured yet, I don't think there's an easier approach.
    2. In the environment you can add a chord memorizer. With this function you can Logic tell to put in a (for instance) C-chord when you hit just the C-note on your midi keyboard. Since I used this function just once and I'm not anywhere close to a Mac with Logic I can't tell exactly how this works right now.
    3. You can change the position of a note on the tablature by changing the note's MIDI channel (in the inspector).

  • Audio Interfaces With Logic Express.

    Hi,
I'm new to the Mac world, I've just bought one of the 20" iMac's with duo processors. I want to run Logic Express and eventually move up to Logic.
I come from PC back ground, I run I use a Behringer UB1202FX mixer, Tannoy Reveal Passive Monitors, Oxygen 8 MIDI keyboard and Cambridge Audio A1 MK3 integrated amp. plugged into a 24 bit /96khz soundcard.
I know I've to get a external audio interface to get 24 bit sound and to allow me to plug in my external equipment. Does anyone have recommendations? I looking for something around £300 maximum (not sure what that is in $)
    Thanks.

I updated to OS X Mavericks and now trying to run Logic Pro X on a MacBook Pro mid-2009, using an M-Audio Axiom 49 and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro... Logic keeps telling me that Mac OS X MIDI Services are not available... How do I solve this problem?

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

I just installed OSX Lion (10.7.2) and updated to the newest version of Logic express (9.1.5) on a macbook and every time I playback audio I get this error message:  [Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010) The Sudden Motion Sensor may have parked the hard drive head, or the disk performance is not sufficient to read or write all audio tracks, or the system was not able to process all data in time]

Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.

    Hello,
Yes, add such effects using the insert slots on the track strip.
Click on the slot, choose your plugin from the list. Double click to bring up its control window to set parameters.

  • Logic Express not syncing with phonics firewire board via audio midi

I am unable to get my logic express to sync with the phonics helix firewire board. the phonics board is recognized by the midi audio set up, but only sometimes.
I have tried adjusting the sample rate in logic and in audio midi and I have tried switching the clock source from mac to device as well as changing the firewire chord.
I am unable to get sound through the board to the computer or from the computer through the board.
I am also receiving error messages regarding the programs reading of the sample rate.
    Please help.
    Thank you

I received an excellent pointer over on the Mackie support forum, and that was to set up an Aggregate Device in the OS X Audio Midi Setup utility.
That worked great, and now I have analog input to my 400F, and output/monitoring on my Mac's Built-in Line Out/speakers.

  • What's the best controller keyboard to run with Logic Express?

I am a composer of mostly acoustic/classical music and was wondering about best user friendly controller keyboard for Logic Express. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am not a rocket scientist when it comes to working with connections, so I need something real easy in a 61 or 76 key synthesizer/controller. jack

Cant really answer thatqestion in terms of the "best to use" with logic express, however, im in the opposite postion as you in the sense that im using logic with a motif 6 and want to sell it, and just get a controller. I produce hip hop, and have always prefered the sounds in the triton to the ones in the motif.....fo waht im using it for at least.
