Logic faders in dbfs?  How much headroom?

Hello,
It is my understanding that logic's faders are set in dbfs. However, I have also heard that when the levels on a fader hit 0 (in the red) in logic, that you still have 4 more db of headroom. Is this true? Does that mean that 0 in logic is actually -4dbfs? If someone could please clarify this point I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

However, I have also heard that when the levels on a fader hit 0 (in the red) in logic, that you still have 4 more db of headroom. Is this true?
No.
Logic is a 32-bit float mixer implementation, which means than individual channels inside Logic's mixer have around 1500dB of dynamic range. This means that if you have a channel peaking at 0dBFS, you can increase the gain by hundreds of dB, and as long as you bring that gain down again before the output channel, you will not clip.
Therefore you needn't worry, as it is almost impossible in normal use to actually clip a channel. the meters are just there for convenience, because there are reasons why should keep your channel levels under control, but you can drive your signals all the way into the red (and then some) and as long as you bring the output fader down to not clip, no clipping will be taking place.
The only channel you need to not clip is the output channel.

  • So I've got logic studio 8. I need the latest version of logic pro and mainstage. how much do I pay or has buying upgrades since first emagic been futile ?

where do I get the discounts ... I aint paying full price ...would rather go to Albeton !!!!!

    What's the difference...
The price for the latest Logic in the App store is about the same as price of an upgrade... there is no discount.
For good or bad, you play Apple's way, or you play somewhere else. :-/

  • Logical Partitioning -How much %age improvement.

    Hello All,
I want to know if we use Logical partitioning for cube then how much %age performance will be improve and how about its depends on loaded data into the cube.
Q1:Logical partitioning of cubes - How much % of performance can be expected.
Q2:How much % of performance improvement can be expected if say no. of records in cube is half the current no. of records.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bandana.

    Bandana,
I would say that the question is incorrect ..( Carl Sagan..? )
First - the percentage improvement depends on the amount of data - if my cube has 100 records and I do a logical partition I will not see any improvement - but then ramp up the numbers to 1 billion records - I see very significant improvements..
Lets say your cube has data for 2010 and 2011 and you want to logically separate out the data . Typically logical partitions would mean separating out the data into separate cubes by year / country etc - any partition that is not using the default partitioning of 0FISCPER / 0CALMONTH etc...
If this is not what you are looking at or if I am wrong - please correct me here...
Now if you split your cube into two parts - one cube for 2010 and one for 2011 - the time required to access the data in the 2010 cube decreases - because it has a cube of its own - this is the benefit you get in terms of data access times - but then this is not going to be a 100% improvement because you have a cube for each year... it depends to a large extent on the query also - but in almost all cases you will have a performance benefit.
I am not able to understand your second question.

  • How much ram are You using ?

Dear Logic Users, simply question :
How much ram are You using on your logic-mac system ?
    Thank you

Does anyone know how much RAM you can whack in one of these new quad machines? And if and when Logic goes 64-bit to catch up with it all, will it be able to use 8GB of RAM? Just wondering, cos as mthinking of getting one of these critters fairly soon.. Best, Fred

  • Hi there! How much of Logic can I Install on an external drive ?

I decided to see how far I could take my beloved eMac G4, 1.25Mz, 2G work horse, so I decided to load it up with as much of Logic9 as poss.
Now I'm also using a 320G external HD, so I was wondering how much of the Logic I could install on it to ease matters on my 80G internal?
    Many thanks for any pointers.

If you want to, you can install your OS and ALL of logic on an external drive and boot from it.

  • How much does a logic board cost?

So apparently my logic board needs to be replaced. I have the apple protection care package, but was told that if I have any liquid spilt on my logic board that I would have to paid to get it fixed. I was just wondering how much one cost, and if my laptop has a blue tint on it would the damage have came from a drink being spilt on it? I read somewhere it tints the computer blue if the computer gets too hot.

Usually if you have to pay for a new logicboard, you might as well buy a new machine because basically the whole computer is the logicboard.
I've done some thinking about if it's worth it or not to get your machine fixed and have come ot this sort of rough forumla.
A Mac has a life expectancy of about 4 years
One needs to determine where along their life expancy their machine is.
Then divide the investment into the machine, including the cost of new software that won't work on the new OS, by the 4 years, then from that determine if it's worth it to spend the money to get the remaining life out of it or to sell it once fixed and come out ahead.
If a machine is just out of the 1 year warranty, no AppleCare, costs $4000 originally, then it might be cost feasible to pay another $700 to get the $3000 due on it. Sell it used for $3500 say and the burn is only $200 (4700-3500 - one year use $1000 = $200)
Usually third party software a mere year old the developer won't have a paid upgrade, but then again with Appel issuing new OS X versions left and right they may, depending upon how much you pay for third party software and what the upgrade price is also is a factor..

  • How much benefit  do I get going to 5 GB for Logic 7.2.3?

    OK, here's the deal...
I've recently come into a little extra cash and I'm considering purchasing a RAM upgrade for my 2.66 Mac Pro.
I run Logic 7.2.3 and I currently have 3 GB RAM and a separate internal 300GB drive for audio.
In Logic, my songs typically use 15-25 tracks or so comprised of audio files and loops, virtual instruments such as Kontakt 2.2, Guitar Rig 2, Dimension Pro and Stylus RMX. My songs usually have Ableton Live 6 and Reason 3.0.5 rewired as well. I sprinkle a few Space Designers into the songs here and there.
That said, here is my question:
Considering how Logic and OS X handle memory, how much benefit would I really see if upgraded to 5GB versus just upgrading to 4GB? Am I correct in assuming that I'd need to wait until Leopard to see benefits beyond 4 GB?
I only ask because Mac Pro RAM modules are kind of expensive and I don't want to overpay if its not needed. I am hoping that some of you Logic experts can help me out on this!
    Thanks,
    Ken
Mac Pro "JUGGERNAUT": 2.66 GHz, 3 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Logic Pro 7.2.3 User

On PPC machines, I used to have 4GB and went to 8GB as I cannibalized another machine, and I was surprised that memory above 4GB did seem to make a difference. I do run external programs quite often, like Melodyne Studio, so I assumed that it would help a bit, but I found that on bigger song files I think I noticed increased smoothness and stability.
So perhaps Logic + OS does benefit from increased RAM more than conventional wisdom has suggested. Particularly as you're using processor intensive plugs. I don't know if using these instruments can benefit from RAM over and above Logic's partition in Intel's architecture.

  • How Much Ram Do I Need To Run Logic Pro 9

    Howdy.
I'm getting ready to do some recording and editing in Logic Pro 9. I'm running a 2011 iMac
    2.7 GHz Intel Cor iS
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    I TB HD
    OSX 10.6.8
Is 8 GB enough memory for Logic, or should I bump it up to 16 GB?
    Thanks!

To answer your question... Much of what I do invoves "raiding" the loop library and piecing things together. As time goes on, I'm getting more & more into original "progressive" type stuff. I'm not in a band nor am I affiliated with any other musicians, so I heavily dependent on loops.
I haven't had any memory issues (yet), but I just read something about freezing tracks taking some of the load off of memory.
If you're using mostly loops you have plenty of RAM.
Also, if you're not laying down a bunch of recorded audio tracks.. (like recording a band) your single TB hard drive should do fine. Freezing comes into play when the CPU is nearing load limit because of heavy use of software instruments and effects that demand a lot of CPU.
I would say for what you're doing at this time, your system is fine as it is.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.. if/when you run into a problem then deal with it, it's not like you're operating a commercial studio.
My suggestion would be to learn how to use Logic's effects correctly.. (Reverbs, Compressors, EQ, Delay...etc)
Use a Reverb or Delay on a bus, then several tracks and use the same effect, if you use all effects as inserts you're wasting CPU.
Learning how to use your system (as is) is FAR more important than how much RAM, what model Mac or how fast your CPU is.
A good engineer can make a world class recording in Garageband. Don't get to caught up in what you have or don't have.. have fun, be creative.

  • How much for new mid 2010 logic board?

So I had my hard drive replaced and ever since then when I am using my computer if it gets knocked at all the screen will either go solid black, blue or orange. Why? I brought my computer into mac life and they said that it was most likely a bad logic board and to take it into apple and they could tell me right then and there what it was. How much do you think that a new logic board will cost? Also, how long do you think it will take to be repaired from the time I take it to the apple store? Oh! and also whenever I close the lid to my computer it doesn't go to sleep. I have a mid 2010 13'' mbp. HELP

A logic board is an expensive repair.  Only the Apple store genius bar can furnish you with definitive answers to your questions.
    Ciao.

  • How Much for New Logic Board?

So, I'm getting to thinking that my logisc board is once again gone. How much would they charge at an Apple store to just swap out my old tattered logic board for a new, or at least working one? And, how much for them to replace my broken CD drive? Or should I just spend the money i don't have for a new Macbook?

I don't know if this is something that all apple stores offer, but my local apple store offers a $300 flat repair fee for fixing any hardware problem,s as long as they do not stem from liquid or drop damage.
This also comes with a 90 day warranty that covers the machine in case of a repeat repair.
I would assume this is something that all apple stores would honor, so if you are sure it's the logic board and not some software issue, I would suggest going toyour local store and inquiring about this.
    Hope that helps!

  • I bought a Macbook Pro in August 2011, so it has been only 16 months up to now. However, its logic board is broken now. Can I ask 1) where can I buy this mainboard?, and 2) how much does it cost?. Thank you

This is one instance where you'll curse yourself for not having bought the AppleCare Warranty extension and gotten the board for free.
Anyway, get your model number handy and go look up the parts in www.powerbookmedic.com or www.ifixit.com amongst other places. They've also have videos or photo pictorials on how to do the replacement. Not altogether trivial, be sure to spread the adequate amount of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, else you'll fry the new board in short order again.

  • IMac intel core 2 due possible logic board failure how much to repair? 3 beeps problem

    Hi guys,
I have an iMac intel core 2 duo. I have the 3 beeps problem. iMac won't start up. I push power button, hear start up sound but screen stays grey & beeps, Apple logo doesn't even appear. I took out ram & memory to clean because it was very dusty down there. Still not working. If it happens to be a logic board problem, how much am I looking at to get it repaired? Or am I better off purchasing a new computer?
Or if I had to buy new ram & or memory how much would that cost?

Three beeps indicates a RAM problem.
I would try cleaning the Ram slots with a little alcohol on a Q-tip to make sure that all the dust is gone. Then reinstall the RAM modules pressing real hard on each module with both thumbs to making sure that they are firmly seated in the slots.

  • Final cut Studio 2 - how much a no-go with logic 9?

I have the new Logic 9 upgrade but I see in the installation notes that the new compressor 3.5 and Soundtrack Pro 3 Is "incompatible" with Final cut studio 2.
Now I also run Finalcut studio 2 apps regularly but I hadn't planned on upgrading just yet but I certainly want to see soundtrack pro 3 (so many bugs in v2!!).
Does anyone know what will happen if I install STP and compressor from logic 9 regardless? How incompatible is incompatible?

My experience with logic9 and FCS 2...
I've installed the full package of Logic 9 regardless of the incompatibility problems (yes, brave, I know:-)
You are indeed "allowed" to do this - you just click a sort of "do it anyway" button.
So far I have launched existing projects and done basic edit cuts in FCP with no problems. I've edited for a day so I feel happy to conclude that basic editing in FCP is not broken.
I have exported ref. and self-contained movies via quicktime conversion so thats not broken.
I have exported XML files from FCP to Logic 9, thats not broken.
Soundtrack v3 launches, plays audio and appears to be ok after about 15mins of me testing - by no means conclusive testing.
I've used logic for a day and it seems just dandy.
I have not used colour, compressor or motion.
Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is facing the same dilemma as I was.
