Logic grinds to a crawl when.....
....song length gets too long. i have just been working on a documentary, not massively loaded with plug-ins etc and the further into it i get the less responsive logic becomes. let me be clear about that - even once 30 minutes of music (with breaks) is finished, going back to the beginning of the song and everything is perky again. the further into it i go, the choppier the video gets, the slower screen redraws and the stickier everything becomes. greater lag between a command and a reponse.
by contrast, i have also been working on an eight minute film, completely music led that is about as crammed with plug-ins, midi data, video and audio tracks as you could possibly imagine, but it is not as unresponsive. it IS sticky, but i could put that down to what in today's terms is a feeble computer for doing this sort of thing on.
my question is...has anybody noticed this? is it possibly my antiquated system? (i was in the market for a new system until the boiler went)
does everything run smoothly on a G5 over a half hour length? bear in mind the effect is exacerbated by data, plug-ins etc, but why would everything run smoothly at the beginning of a song loaded up but not at the end?
different rohan! it's not a very common name i know. the guy you were responding to was rohan staton. it was an interesting thread though...
i had a problem too with very long regions. we were compiling the music track for a long documentary and i found that logic was starting to crash, grind to a halt and all sorts of nasty things just with a song length of over an hour. yet it only had a handful of audio files - no plugs instruments etc. but it did have one very very long file - about 50 mins. reducing the tempo helped but didn't completely solve the problem. at least it didn't crash. this was pre 7.1
my most recent project which comprised of a short film and doco, has lead to an uncommon number of crashes since going onto 7.1. (or 7.1.1) combined with slow response as the files became more complex and/or longer it is really starting to bother me. generally crashes tend to happen either when opening the score editor, or when the system hasn't caught up with my instructions. by that i mean, i might stop the sequencer and open a plug-in. if i do the latter too close the former it might crash.
i have been reorganizing memory and regularly restarting logic and/or the machine, and that certainly helps. i really want to know how better this type of performance will be with a G5. it is really the only real reason that i would contemplate upgrading. it is time to upgrade, i think, when i can run logic faster than the computer.

Local logical system is not defined when tried to create new maint. trx.
Dear Experts,
I encountered this message "Local logical system is not defined" when I tried to create new maintenance transaction in DWSP (at Maintenance Optimizer of Solution Manager).
This message kept on appeared even though I've created and assigned the logical system at SALE.
Does anyone know what went wrong?
regards,
AbrahamHi
there are workarround suggested to solve this problem
login to your solman system, go to the table T000 and update the logical system name in the field LOGSYS
this vanish the error message. Please try.
Thanks,

Closed a logic pro x project and when asked to save i said no did i lose all i did or is there a way i can recover the files??
Your only parachute would be Time Machine (if you have it running).
Logic's Auto Save feature doesn't help you at that point because that data is reset if you close the Project (or save the Project). However, the recorded audio files should be still in the Projects File (inside the Media folder of the Package File).
My guess is that this is actually a bug because it leaves orphan files behind that cannot be accessed from the Logic Project itself.
Hope that helps

Logic 8.02 always crashes when I select all files in Audio bin
hi, does anybody else know this prob?
Logic 8.02 always crashes when I select all files in Audio bin. (that´s the only crash I have in 2 years work, but it happens for sure)
thxHow do you select them all? Via the Audio Bin menu, via keycommand or by mouse?

Audition grinds to a halt when I zoom in on a complex multitrack session.
Howdy.
I'm putting Audition up against a pretty powerful computer:
- 4 GB RAM
- Quad core at 2.4 Ghz per core
- All SATA hard drives
- nVidia 8800 video card
That said, when I get into a complex multi-track session (more than about 10 tracks with effects) and start zooming in tight, the program grinds to a total halt. The CPU usage on all four cores spikes to 100%, but the audio rarely drops out.
For example, in a recent remix with 30 tracks (and minimal effects), I had zoomed in to just a single measure, and it was taking Audition about 5 to 7 seconds just to respond to clicks and keyboard strokes. Once I zoom out, the problem magically resolves.
And you know...I seem to remember this happening back in Audition 1.5 as well.
Is this just me? I can definitely reproduce it on two entirely different (and powerful) computers. Anyone else had this problem and/or know how to fix it?I use an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with dual monitors and its certainly not a top of the range card nor as SteveG suggests should it be.
> Maybe it's just me, but could you please explain how a faster drive makes a difference to the performance when zoomed in? Because on the face of it, that makes no sense.
It could have something to do with the alignment of the planets rather than the faster hard drive but all I can do is give the facts, my observations and logical conclusions :-)
Zoom in for really close work with large track count recorded at 44.1k with a 7200 rpm drive and I would have an annoying lag of about 2ish seconds enough to really disrupt workflow.
Do nothing else but add a 10k rpm drive and make that my primary work drive - problem gone.
Think about the logic of it for a minute.
You are somewhere say in the middle of the song you zoom in (I'm thinking just now while I'm typing - which is novel in itself - that Steve you may be thinking that the lag is in the zoom - its not and that could be the confusion but I'll continue) and press play. AA has to load the tracks position the file pointers of all track at the beginning of the file then move each pointer to the position in the song for each track to your zoom point and then play the tracks.
Worse for 48k files and probably worse (can't tell cause I usually have heaps of edits) with heaps of slices as each is a virtual copy of the original track.
That's a lot of work and a lot of data to move around - I'm seriosly looking at the solid state drives with lower seek times.
BlairT you have some serious PC issues cause that machine should be coping without a problem. -
Lion grinds to a halt when a network volume is mounted
Ok, so I've got a network drive that I mount infrequently, but when i do the OS grinds to a halt. I don't think it's Spotlight because it doesn't tell me it's indexing the drive in the Spotlight tab. I've tried adding it to the privacy tab in Preferences too but that makes no difference. iStat Menus sometimes shows big spikes of CPU usage across all cores at the time, yet oddly at others it doesn't. The network section of iStat also shows wildly varying network traffic whilst it's happening too, sometimes upto 3MB/s, but this fluctuates all over the place.
What can I use to try and track down what's happening? It's a fairly easy bug to reproduce, but the system is pretty unusable while it's actually happening; can take 10-15 seconds to respond to a click because of the inevitable beachball of doom. Any suggestions?
Just in case it helps, it's a Samba share from a ZFS filesystem.I use an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with dual monitors and its certainly not a top of the range card nor as SteveG suggests should it be.

Logical Standby Apply Processes Die when granting a user sysdba on Primary
I've run into an issue where the sql apply processes are stopping when granting a user sysdba privilege on the primary.
The error is insufficient privileges.
Of course the workaround that we have used is to skip the transaction on the logical and then manually grant the sysdba privilege on the standby. I'm hoping there is a more elegant solution as I have 8 DBAs on my team and each on of the transactions will need to be skipped individually, and is a bit of a pain. Just thought I would ask if anyone out there has run into the same issue and has a better workaround.I think you misunderstand. We run our standby in guard_mode 'STANDBY', which allows sys to perform the grant operation directly on the logical. Where it is failing is when we grant on the primary. That or I misunderstand. Are you saying that if I put in the script on the primary, the alter session command, then it will propagate down cleanly? That is something I have not tried of course, but makes sense how that could work, unless it throws an error on the primary because it is not a standby.

Logic 8 freezes and unfreezes when moving plugins on screen?
I have a problem with Logic.
When I move a plugin from one place to another on the screen, it will get "stuck", and the spinning wheel will appear for 20-40 seconds. Sometimes the graphic in the plugin doesn't get updated after this problem occurs. Its enough to change to another screenset and back, and it looks ok again - but the main problem here is the freezing during the time Logic "thinks".
Logic doesn't crash after this happens, it goes back to normal - but its very frustrating having to wait around 30 seconds just because I want to move a plugin.
Here are a few factors to rule out:
Activity monitor shows that mem, cpu and space is all very ok
The problem occurs with both my internal soundcard and my MOTU PCI-424
Latest drivers, versions of all software
The problem is present when using only native Logic plugins, so rule out 3rd party incompability.
Is there anyone else experiencing the same problem? Is there any log for when Logic is running that I can check? If the application would have crashed I could diagnose it, but Logic never crashes, it just freezes for a while.
The problem does not start from the beginning of a project - but when I have loaded a couple of plugs - even without editing anything in the project - it starts freezing up.
I am desperate for help, I invested a lot of money in my new Mac Pro solely for the reason to run Logic. I have contacted AppleCare but they haven't gotten back to me.
Config:
Standard configuration of the newest Mac Pro model, no non-apple memory added.
One extra harddrive, but Logic is installed on system disk.
Midiman Midisport 4x4 USB interface
MOTU PCI-424 with 192IO interface
Genelec 8240 with controller software (USB connected)
PowerMate USB volume-controlI just thought I'd report back and say that my machine has been at the technical support department at Jigsaw Systems (where I bought it from) for the last 8 days or so, and they can't work out what the problem is and they can't fix it.
Even worse than that is that they tried this 'Monty' trick with the Space Designers on every other brand new MacPro that they had (which was 3 machines) and found the same problem on all of them.
And they tried it with a variety of graphics cards including the new NVidia 8800 and it still did it, though apparantly not quite as bad with the 8800.
Their conclusion is that this problem is specific to Logic 8 and the new MacPros and you WILL encounter this problem if you use Logic 8 on a brand new MacPro.
The Apple / Emagic team had better find a fix for this quick. -
Logic Pro keeps (Not Responding) when launched or opening tracks...
Running logic Pro 7.2.1 on Power Mac G5 and using a Tascam FW-1884 control surface. During startup logic Pro hangs. Sometime if a song is opened via "Finder" it opens fine, but most times it just hangs. Also, not sure if this is related, but all logic pop-up window have this funky maroon color and its hard to read the text and button can't be seen at all.
PLEASE help!!!!!! Production DOWN!
-ChicoI had many problems with my Mac G5 2.7 refurb/Logic 7.2.1 when I first got it back in March. Although my problems were different than yours some things I remember doing that helped:
Trashing Logic's preferences fixed a situaution where my Logic windows were flashing randomly and Midi info was corrupted causing my Mackie Control Universal and my Korg Triton to freak out Logic.
Repairing disk permissions because 2 times Logic did not totally install correctly. Yes I reinstalled Logic at least 4 times to figure out why I was having freezeups system wide.
Working closely with Apple Care documenting my problems and finally getting my local Apple store in our local Mall to change out the motherboard, dual processors and optical drive. Yes essentially a new computer. Since that time I have not had one system wide freezeup (any wood around here)
or major problem.
AT one point running the "Quick Test" from Apple's startup disc showed a Bad RAM chip. Again not related to you but running the test could show something.
I have 2 issues left to fix - Logic 7.2.1 for me has a transposition problem. Midi tracks will show up after I open a song file transposed down a step. The fix is to reboot Logic which is a pain. 2nd - Annoying beep coming from my power supply. Beep is audible in studio near the tower and is also in the audio chain coming out of speakers. No fix yet but again I'm working with Apple Care. -

Logic pro x keeps crashing when uploading
Logic Pro X keeps crashing whenever I want to upload or bounce my track. So I won't get a audio file of it, which means it's just in Logic and I can't share it with anything or anyone.
It starts bouncing but it closes logic when it's about half done and then gives a crash message.
Anyone know how to solve this?Yes I am, but I solved the problem already.
I don't know why but the kick was the problem it kept crashing.
I replaced all the kicks and now it's doing okay ;p
But thanks to take time to look at this -
Logical Reads are very high when run as sproc and very less logical reads when run as a script
Hello
Have a question,
when i execute a sproc. i get a very high logical reads count and when i run the same sproc converted into script it has very low logical reads what does it mean..I would like you to check query plan during ad-hoc run versus stored procedure execution. As other pointed out it could be due to parameter sniffing.

Logic Express keeps crashing unexpectedly when i try to launch it
Hi, I have logic Express 7 installed on my iBook G3/500. I am running os X 10.4.11, with 640 MB of Ram and a 120 GB HD. It had worked fine under 10.4.0 and after i did a software combo update to 10.4.11 it would not open. Every time I open it I get the beach ball, followed by an error message saying Logic has unexpectedly quit. Ive tryed repairing permissions, trashing the prefs, and i get the same results. Ive tryed re-installing it, and it does nothing. Could it have somthing to do with me updating to 10.4.11? When I was running 10.4.0 it worked fine.
-AllenHi again CueBallMcDraw,
What operating system are you on? If your issue isn't related to your subscription being in a pending state (as I discussed in your other post), we'll look closer at what's going on with your system. But, I suspect you're going to be fine once your order finishes processing.
Please let us know how it goes.
Best,

MacBook slows down to a crawl when using iSight
Hi!
I have a 2006 MacBook (Core Due 2 GHz), which I have upgraded to Snow Leopard (via Leopard). I am trying to use the built-in camera ("iSight") for video chat, but when I do, the computer slows down to a crawl, and the application that is using the camera takes all CPU.
I've tried with both iChat and Skype, and the result is the same, so it seems to be in the camera drivers and not the applications themselves.
Does anyone have any good ideas on what I can do to alleviate the problem? I have not installed any specific drivers for the camera beyond what comes with Mac OS.nafmo wrote:

Hello nafmo
Snow Leopard's iChat 5 does require more CPU power than iChat 4 (from Leopard), so you may, in part, be noticing that. The best way to verify that is with your Mac's Activity Monitor utility. For your comparison, my new 2.26GHz Core2Duo MacBook Pro uses slightly more than half of both cores for Snow Leopard iChat video chats.
Here are some other things you can consider:

We will watch for your status update.
