LOGIC IS DRIVING ME TO DESPAIR

Hi Guys. Logic just keeps on crashing (Quitting) when trying to save - and all my work up to that point is lost. It had been running fine up to about a week or two ago, but now...baaaah. I've trashed my prefs, removed any recent plugs and rebuilt my files from scratch, but all to no avail. I can't begin to calculate the time I've wasted.
Q1. What kind of mood am I in today?
Q2. How can I fix it (should I reinstall)?
Cheers in advance,
Simon (London UK - On Bridge - Looking into water)

  • Yet ANOTHER Logic Crash and NO 'crashed' version saved?

    Hi.
I could go on here about how much crashes in Logic are driving me insane but you all know the score...
Do you know why its not saving crashed versions when it crashed like it used to?
    Thanks

    benjamingordon wrote:

Well, then you now know what you should not do. I haven't seen a DAW that doesn't at least protest when loading an instrument during playback... Cubase on Mac pre OS X always froze or crashed when I loaded an instrument during playback, even when changing presets during playback. It is a bit like trying to replace a cars' gearbox while driving...

  • New features good!  Trusty old features...missing.

    Flash CS4...
I don't use the HELP functionality except for ONE thing, a
reference guide for AS3 classes. In CS3 it sat in a tab right next
to my ACTIONS tab and I would toggle back and forth between the two
as a part of my work process. Now, the help only resides in an
online HTML page (slow as molasses) and when you hit Help from the
top nav, it takes you to all of the noob stuff. I liked the ability
to turn off the noob stuff and only display the AS3 class
    reference.
Now if you right click a method or property in the Actions
window, to pull up HELP on that item, it will pull that reference
up in an online HTML page (that is super slow). The problem with
that is,...there is no left nav frame that allows you to skip
around in that particular class. Since the reference it pulls up is
often taken WAY out of context, this presents a huge functionality
    problem.
For example, in CS4, type addEventListener into the actions
window. Then right click on it and select help. A new HTML page
pops up with the information you want right? No. Here is what you
    get -
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/data/SQLConnection.html#addEventListen er()
Now if the context of your question was about how to
addEventListener to a button in a swf (a far more likely occurance
than say a SQLConnection in an AIR app) then you just got screwed
and LOST at the same time.
The Adobe help docs have never been good in this respect, but
one would figure that, if they are taking this endeavor completly
online then it would stand to reason that they would, based on user
page requests open the help doc most likely to be of assistance.
AND if it is not the context for the method you are looking for,
that it would list other areas that might be of more relevance to
your particular issue. Perhaps it would even be of benefit to,
instead of jumping to the first occurance in the online docs, have
the query run through Google (addEventListener
site:help.adobe.com)...At least Google would give several options
that might have one that relate to something you are doing.
The core of addEventListener goes back to flash.events, not
flash.data. I don't get the logic in driving people to flash.data.
Another thing to help this out would be to put the sidebar into any
direct help requests, from the ACTIONS panel, so that the user can
easily see the other classes and get to the proper one if Flash
takes them on a misguided tour. The way it is now, it takes a bit
of digging to pull up the AS3 class reference with the left hand
side bar. Why can't this FULL version of the AS3 reference docs not
display with the initial search request?
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/index.html
    <- you got it here...
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/data/SQLConnection.html#addEventListen er()
<- why not here as well?
Please tell me that the old help functionality is in CS4, but
I just need to turn it on in a hidden preference area.

    Walter and bnailWedge,
I hear you, both. I, too, am disappointed with the CS4 Help
    on many
levels. The content is still very good -- that's an important
    point -- but
I agree it has become very difficult to navigate and even
    worse to search.
Fortunately, you can use your browser's built in tools to
    help. Bookmarks,
for example, come in handy once you've figured out where your
    resources are.
And in-browser/in-page search can help you pinpoint things
    quickly.
For what it's worth, I do remember having conversations with
    Adobe
engineers in which some of the reasons for this choice were
    explained to me.
These included the fact that install files were getting
    exceedingly complex
across the board. Part of this challenge was mitigated by
    omitting portions
of the Help docs for local installation. In addition -- and
    this one is
pretty self-evident -- the docs are more manageable and
    updateable when
maintained on a server. There were additional reasons given,
    but none of
them seem to have stuck in my brain, perhaps because they
    didn't seem
compelling enough to me. For better or worse, this system has
    been adopted
across the board for every app in the CS4 suite.
To clarify an earlier statement by Walter, Flash CS4 does
    install the
ActionScript 3.0 Language and Components Reference and (I
    think) the Using
Flash CS4 Professional guide locally, but everything else --
    ActionScript
2.0 Language Reference, JSFL reference, the beginner's guides
    -- are not
installed. But at least they'e online, and they're all linked
    from within
the starter page(s) visible when you press the F1 key.

Not sure which ones you mean. There are samples mixed with

That was one of the biggest issues I mentioned directly to
    the Flash
team. Believe me, they're aware of these points, but because
    the Help files
aren't directly related to the Flash install anymore --
    outside of the two
(I think) examples I mentioned earlier -- it's Adobe the
    Mothership that
needs to hear your feedback. Do bring these issues up!
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
They really do read through user feedback.

  • Monitor/VST Problem

I'm running the newest version of Locic Express and I'm having a bit of trouble. I have a guitar hooked up through the GuitarPlug device, which gives me zero latency...which is great except that I can't hear it when I'm recording with it. How do I monitor a track that I'm recording in?
Also, and here's a big one. I have Guitar Rig 2 installed but how do I use the plug-in with Logic so that I can use all the amp/fx sounds?
I'm so used to Ableton Live that Logic is driving me CRAZY!!!

I have the GuitarPlug running the guitar's audio signal into the Mac through USB. I also have those nice Bose USB speakers/sub plugged in through a USB on the back of the Mac. I've tried using it in GarageBand with Monitor turned on and I can hear my guitar just fine. I figured I would just have to click a switch somewhere in Logic on the track to enable monitoring of the track I want to record my guitar to. Can't seem to find it though.
On top of that, I can't get GuitarRig to even recognize my GuitarPlug. Under Outputs it lists my Bose Speakers, which is correct. However, under Inputs it says there's nothing connected. I've tried unplugging the GuitarPlug and rebooting, but nothing seems to let GuitarRig recognize the instrument. What am I doing wrong?

  • Fade file (error -48) problems are making work almost impossible-solutions?

Logic is driving me bonkers with 2 error messages when I try to set a crossfade with the crossfade tool:
    1) "fade update failed" (error-48)
    2) "File with specified name and version number already exists" Result code =-48
I've tried resaving the song under a new name, but then get the error message:
    "Read/write permission doesn't allow writing" Result code = -61
Now Logic is sometimes awkward with file permissions and the fade files can be really tricky; but I've tried a regular permissions repair for the drive, setting permissions to read/write via the Info box, even used PrivilegeFix on the whole folder....to no avail.
I do a lot of work with audio and not having crossfades is a serious handicap.
    Any input would be appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Nigel

    Hi Nigel,
I most frequently see this first error when people have imported files from CDs. The file comes in as Read Only and you need to change its Permissions before you try using it in Logic. You mention changing permissions in your original post but did you do it on the imported audio file or on the fade files?
Are you perhaps using a network for your audio files? If so, you're going to have problems. Cleverer people than I have failed to get Logic working well on a network. Here's a post from the excellent Edgar Rothermich on the topic:
    http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=16788
    Also check the following discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6804011
If you're having a problem with Fade Files, you can always try:
Options > Audio > Delete All Fade Files
This doesn't cause a long term problem because Logic simply rebuilds them when needed.

  • Guitar Rig/Monitoring Problem

I'm running the newest version of Locic Express and I'm having a bit of trouble. I have a guitar hooked up through the GuitarPlug device, which gives me zero latency...which is great except that I can't hear it when I'm recording with it. How do I monitor a track that I'm recording in?
I'm so used to Ableton Live that Logic is driving me CRAZY!!!

Dunno, I don't have Guitar Rig. Does the manual cover it's installation? Try asking over on the NI forums as well...
ALso, if you are using a different audio device for input and output, you may need to setup an aggregate device in the AMS, then select that aggregate device in Logic as your audio driver.

  • Selecting a default row in an adf detail table problem

Hi, i'm hoping someone can help me as this problem is driving me to despair. I am using JDeveloper 10.1.3 production. All I want to do is set the first row selected in the detail af:table in my page. I have referred to the documentation available at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/jsf/doc/devguide/table.html#Single%20Selection and from this I have created the following code which I think should work.
    public void setResourcesTable(CoreTable resourcesTable) {
    this.resourcesTable = resourcesTable;
    RowKeySet r = resourcesTable.getSelectionState();
    if(r != null){
    Iterator selection = r.getKeySet().iterator();
    if(selection.hasNext()){
    String rowKey = (String) selection.next();
    resourcesTable.setRowKey(rowKey);
The main problem is that the getSelectionState() is returning null and I cant understand why. This happens regardless of whether or not there are any detail rows in the table. I havent been using JSF that long and so I apologise if i'm missing something obvious.
Please help me as I haven't been able to find any help throughout the forums apart from referring me to the same page and I cant believe that it can possibly be this difficult just to set the default row.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lee

    mark,
Those four fields can be set completely declaratively in the Entity Object (check out the History Colum feature). Copied from the (11g) documentation:
If you need to keep track of historical information in your entity object, such as when an entity was created or modified and by whom, or the number of times the entity has been modified, you specify an attribute with the History Column option selected (in the Edit Attribute dialog).
If an attribute's data type is Number, String, or Date, and if it is not part of the primary key, then you can enable this property to have your entity automatically maintain the attribute's value for historical auditing. How the framework handles the attribute depends which type of history attribute you indicate:
    * Created On: This attribute is populated with the time stamp of when the row was created. The time stamp is obtained from the database.
    * Created By: The attribute is populated with the name of the user who created the row. The user name is obtained using the getUserPrincipalName() method on the Session object.
    * Modified On: This attribute is populated with the time stamp whenever the row is updated/created.
    * Modified By: This attribute is populated with the name of the user who creates or updates the row.
    * Version Number: This attribute is populated with a long value that is incremented whenever a row is created or updated.

  • Express and M-Audio Keystation

I Just got an 49e Keystation usb keyboard. Im using Logic Express and I not sure how to get the sounds i record to play back. It show that it is playing but there is no sound. can someone please help me

    Hi loztchyld,
I have an M-Audio 49e, and it works perfectly with Logic Express, so don't despair. I assume since you see the input from the 49e in the Logic transporter window (right?), that you have run the Audio midi setup application in Utilities to install the 49e, that it appears in that window, that you have run the setup assistant for LE and that it shows the 49e as a connected device (right?).
The 49e is used to input notes as an 'AudioInstrument' so you have to create and audio instrument track for it to do it on, say a Steinway piano. Having done that, the track can not be muted, no other track can be solo'd, the volume phaser has to be turned up, your speakers have to be working, the volume slider on the 49e has to be slid at least half way up, say. That's what I can think of off the bat. You might check that the Audio Drivers in the Logic Preferences>Audio is set to Built in Audio. See if any of that works.
    Good luck,
    Ray

  • Burning 45 minute Video on Mac

    (1) I use a Mac, and burned a 45 minute video from Timeline, (it was not rendered) and it tookapprox 10 hours to burn. I use Verbatim X16 Discs. I need to burn further videos of similar length and need to speed up the process. On the one I am working on now, I have rendered it first. If I burn directly from Timeline on my internal iDVD, will it take just as long to burn ?
    (2) I have saved this file as a mpeg2 file on the computer, in your discussions you mentioned using ImgBurn software, but as far as I can tell, it will not work on a Mac.
If I were to use a different software for burning, would it be faster than burning direct from Timeline, and would it use the PE Disc Menu and Chapter Menu Markers.
I look forward to your suggestions.

    Steve,
I am really confused by your reply, as when I made enquiries in
February, as to the correct codec for 8mm Cine Film Conversion, you
    replied as follows :-
Cine is providing you an editable hi-def video, the ideal format is a
Main Concept MPEG at 1440x1080 anamorphic 25i. This type of video
will edit perfectly in a project set up for HDV editing. (1440x1080
anamorphic video produces the same 16:9 as 1920x1080 square pixel
    video.)
As an alternative, they can provide a 1920x1080 25i as AVCHD -- but
they MUST use the Sony AVC codec or you're going to have problems.
This type of video can be edited in a project set up for Full AVCHD.
Insist on either of these specs precisely! Close isn't good enough.
You'll know they got it right because, when you set up the project
using the settings I discussed above, you'll have no red lines above
the clips when you add them to the timeline.
Remember, they work for you. Do not accept anything except what you
need, and don't let them tell you that what they're giving you is
good enough or, worse, that it's BETTER.
Consequently, I instructed the Cine Converters to give me mpeg.
To be fair, it does work, but its the time to burn a DVD that is
    driving me to despair.
I am a convert from iMovie, as I was told that Premier Elements had
many advantages.  From what you say, I am simply going to have to
continue to burn all night and for many nights to come, I just hope
my DVD Burner does not throw in the towel !

  • New External Monitor for Logic on MacBook Pro - Suggestions

I'm in the painful process of updating my studio and now my large screen external monitor has started failing.
I know if this a pretty general question more suited to the MacBook Pro forum but I'd like some input from folks used to working with an application like Logic in a home studio environment.
I guess the issue for me is that I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. One of the things specific to Logic and music software in general is that there are LOTS of very detailed dialog boxes with text that is not always height adjustable (yes I know about zooming and indeed I do lots of that but it gets quite distracting). The other factor is that I'm often recording and engineering myself which means I'll be sitting with a guitar in my lap or at a keyboard and can't always lean in too close to the monitor.
I solved this by buying a large 26" Acer which sits on my desk behind the Mackie MCU. To my left I've got the MacBook 15.4" Pro on a keyboard stand above my MIDI controller at a 45 degree angle to the desk.
It's worked quite well until the Acer seems to have become haunted. It will mysteriously reboot itself intermittently, going blank for a second, then showing the Acer logo and going back to picture. It will also turn itself on spontaneously when the computer is off (the status light is off and then turns itself on). It seems to detect when I'm in the middle of a really good session and starts resetting itself every 30 seconds or so. Then it will work fine sometimes for days or weeks at a time. I've checked it on 4 different computers, it malfunctions on all. I believe in may be a problem with one of the capacitors or the inverter, I'm not sure, but it's driving CRAZY at this point.
And of course now it's 3 months out of warranty and may be more expensive to fix than buying a new one.
So my issue is what monitor to replace it with. I've considered buying an Apple monitor, since the display is lovely to look at but there are a couple things that are deal breakers.
    It's expensive. Very expensive.
Oddly you have to choose between a 24" and a 30", with nothing in between. Don't want to sound like Goldilocks here, but the 24 is tooooo small and the 30 is tooooo big.
Yeah I know bigger is usually better but since they bumped the native resolution of the 30" up to 2560x1600 it's really sharp but things like the menu text get really quite small. Yes you can reset to a lower non native resolution, but then you loose the sharpness. I tested Logic in the store on the 30" and it did look great but I found I actually had to move my whole body around to see things at the top and bottom of the screen.
Oh and did I mention that it's expensive? Jeez.
The 24" now seems to look a bit small to me after using the same resolution (1920x1200) on the Acer's 26" screen. (Ok, I think it's actually 25.5 but hey that half an inch can make a big difference and I will avoid making any bad jokes here).
And did I mention the Apple monitors are expensive? The 24" is almost 3 times as expensive as a cheaper alternative.
I also still have a PC here that I use (sorry) and the Apple monitors have very limited connectivity. So I think unfortunately the Apple monitors are out for me.
So I;m down to a couple other non Apple options. I will not buy an Acer again since I believe now that their quality control is not good and their support is absolutely atrocious. Shame I used to be a big fan of Acer PC's, but after owning a couple I'm steering clear.
My biggest issue right now is that most of the new budget monitors are geared toward 1080p HD uses so they are they are maxing out at 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio instead of 1920x1200's 16:10). So the tradeoff here is that HD movies will look better in 16:9, but 16:10 gives you "squarer" pixels and more vertical resolution for screen hungry apps like Logic.
Any opinions on this? I'm a bit new to the Mac so I don't know if I'm really better off going with a 1920x1200 screen like the Apple monitors.
Also, I know this may just be a bug in the Acer's scaling, but if I switch to 1920x1080, I lose the menus off the top of the screen or if I adjust the vpos I lose the dock at the bottom. Downscaling to 1600x1050 or even 1024x768 works fine. If I get a 1080 screen and set the resolution appropriately will it work correctly and without too much distortion?
I'm also curious what is the best way to hook up the monitor? I'm currently using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook. My Pro is the slighter older silver keyboard model so it has the standard DVI out. Will I see any real improvement by going over to using DVI directly?
Also I'm wondering how people feel about glossy vs matte for music. My current displays are the non-glossy and I do think I prefer them for detail work.
    The candidates right now are
Hanns-G HH-281HPB 28" @300$. It's one of the only budget monitors that uses 1920x1200. All the right inputs (DVI, VGA). I'm just afraid this might be a bit too good to be true. It's really cheap and after having problems with a "cheap" Acer (although it wasn't so cheap 3 years ago!) I don't want similar problems. Stand has no swivel or tilt (a big problem for my use). Also that resolution on such a big screen might be good for me or it might look grainy I don't know I haven't seen it. Anybody have any experience with these?
Samsung P2770H 27" @339 Looks nice, good color. Sadly only 1080 native resolution. Stand doesn't swivel, but does tilt. No VGA input, so won't work with my old PC (although strangely it says it comes with a VGA cable). They get generally good reviews and I know Samsung makes very good flat panel TV's.
ViewSonic X Series VX2739WM 27" @350. Once again maxes out at 1080. It's fast (1ms), has VGA input. I've never been a big fan of ViewSonic but they do seem to have gotten better color-wise. Tilt no swivel and it's anti-glare (not sure this is a plus).
There are also similar options from HP, Asus, LG and Sceptre but they are all 1080. In fact outside of the Apples, the Hanns-G and a few expensive monitors from NEC they all seem to be 1080. So if I really want the 1200 the Hanns-G seems like the only way to go.
Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

No doubt, the Apple displays are gorgeous. The first time I saw the 30" display wow, I wanted one BAD and it's actually what prompted me to buy a "big" monitor. The colors are great with a rich wonderful saturation level and as usual for Apple the form factor design is stunning. You know for that picture quality I could even get over the sticker shock and save up for one.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I actually sat down in the store and started to use Logic on one. I imagine for doing video work, graphic design or darn near anything else, it would be great. But for Logic I just found myself bending and twisting trying to look at toolbar at the bottom and then up to look at the menus. And instrument or plugin displays that were hard coded to look OK at lower resolutions looked really, really tiny to me. For me and particularly using Logic having 2 slightly smaller displays at a 45 degree angle makes more sense.
And once again the 24 seems just a bit small. I don't understand why they have a 27" iMac but you can't buy a 27" display. So iMac 27" starting at 1699, subtract out the cost of the CPU and drive ie the Mini and I'd really buy one. Strangely you can buy a 21.5" or a 27" iMac. Or you can buy a 24" or 30" display. Hmmmm.
So don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Apple for being expensive. They put a lot of money into R&D and into really thinking about the form and the function of their products. As a recent convert from being a PC developer for 25+ years, hey I've more than sipped the Kool-Aid here, I've guzzled it. They make great products and yeah they're more expensive, because they ARE better! I've now got 2 MBP's, 2 iPods, I'm about to get an iPhone (silly "death grip" or not) and I really want an iPad. Heck I'd really love an 8 core MacPro if I could afford one (alas I can't).
I guess my only gripe here is that there always seems to be a little less choice in the Apple world. Yeah, I know they do a lot less volume than the PC clone world I just think that they always seem to have a big gap between the high end and low end with not enough in between. So you can choose between the lower end and one piece units with no expansion boards (the mini or the iMac) or go straight to monster tower MacPro (way over 3K with display). You can get a MacBook but then you have to put up with a small screen or go with MacBook Pro, which let's face it is a lot of computing power for someone who just wants to web surf and write some email without squinting.
So here I am stuck in the middle. I don't want to buy a HannspreeQG or another piece of junk that's going to last 3 years and 3 months because of a crappy $2 capacitor that no seems to able to fix or care about fixing. I'd like to buy a really nice Apple monitor, I just want a big monitor, not a huge one and not a "medium" one (I know I'm spoiled but 24" seems "medium" these days).
Sorry about the rant here but my monitor is shutting down every 30 seconds and I'm about to go completely insane and toss it out the window!!!
Really glad to hear about that 84' VGA cable. I never imagined such a thing existed or would work without some sort of signal boost on the way. Very cool for me. My electronic drum kit is in another room and I would love to have a small cheap monitor next to it for sequencing. I had my laptop on a stand next to it for a while but I began to get terrified that I'd let a drumstick slip and destroy my laptop screen. That would be a very bad thing. Thanks for the tip.

  • What is labview digital write-to-line logic high voltage?

i'm using a pci-6503 daq hardware and cb-50lp.I'm currently doing a project to interface a labview vi to a programmable chip(downloaded with a vhdl program),using the daq hardware. The chip must function according to the labview program.I'm using 2 digital write-to-lines and 6 digital read-from-lines to interface to the chip.
    Problem:
the 6 digital read-from-lines are able to read from the chip, but the 2 digital write-to-lines are unable to reach a logic high of 5v.This means that the labview vi can only read and unable to write to the chip to function(only one way communication). In the daq wizard, when using the test panel to test the individual lines of port a,b and c,it is able to write a good
logic low and good logic high(5v),even when all the lines are being used altogther. But when the labview vi is being run, the write-to-line cannot write a good logic high, thus unable to interface completely with the chip.
    Please advise.Urgent!
    grays

LabVIEW does not do anything different to the PCI-6503. NI-DAQ outputs the same 5V from MAX and LabVIEW. Are you sure the FPGA isn't driving 0V on the same line? You could test this by putting a small resistor between the FPGA and the DAQ card. See what the voltage is across the resistor.
Even at 2.5mA, the 6503 should output 3.7V.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro - Logic Board Failure - Advice Needed

    Hello all,
I could really use some advice.
I have a MacBook Pro that I bought through the Apple Online Store roughly around September of 2010. A couple of weeks after buying it I had to take it to the Apple Store in London's White City due to a keyboard backlight issue. About a week later I collected the MBP and the following day had to take it back as the technician that worked on it had not tightened the display brackets up leaving it a bit floppy.
Now I have serious issues with it. Recently the MacBook has been suffering from freezing up, booting issues and the display randomly shutting off (going black, no pixelating or anything) to the point the machine has become unusable. 2 days ago I took the MBP along to an appointment at the Genius Bar at London's Regent Street Apple Store, I also took along a copy of an Apple knowledge base article regarding this very issue. The knowledge base suggests that on any OS below Mountain Lion a software update is required, for ML or Mavericks an appointment with a service agent is required. During the appointment the Mac Genius suggested it may be a software issue, they would wipe the system and re-install Mavericks then test the machine, I told him I had done this a few days earlier but I guess they have to follow process. He then went on to suggest the display may be faulty, I told him I had no reason to suspect that was the case and moved the screen forwards and backwards at varying speeds without a glimmer of a flicker. At this point after reading about this issue on various forums prior to the appointment I felt that the guy was trying to imply anything maybe at fault but deliberately steering clear of suggesting the logic board, this is just my gut feeling however and i'm perfectly capable of being wrong but I do not feel I am! Anyhow I then proceeded to demonstrate the issue whilst the machine was on, warmed up and right in front of him. I gently and slightly lifted the front left corner of the machine a little way off of the counter, just enough to obviously flex the logic board by a minuscule amount and immediately the display went into a frenzy of going off and on.
So I left the MBP with them for the guys to do their thing. Today I received the following email:
"We have attempted to repair your machine by erasing all the data off your machine and reinstalling the latest operating system, Mavericks. This has not resolved the issue of the screen going black when in use. The issue has occurred again for a very short and brief few times once the machine had fully turned on and after testing the issue did not appear again.
I'm sure the issue will more likely occur again, to repair the machine we would need to replace a part known as the main logic board. This repair is very expensive and will come roughly to £418.80."
£418.80 GBP, that's pretty much 25% of the original purchase price of the machine new, a Premium 'Pro' labelled machine just 3 years old at that. I cannot possibly afford to pay for the repair. I really despair.
This MBP has done no work hard enough for it to get stressed. It is used for some web surfing, online shopping, email, online flash based games but mostly for my kids homework. It has spent it's entire life on a table in our living room with the exception of it's Genius Bar trips.
I love Apple products, it's why as a family we own so many off them. Too many to list on a public forum as I don't want would be burglars inviting themselves around sometime. This issue has tainted my perception of both Apple and it's products. Not so much because of the fault, machines become faulty. No because it's a premium machine that cost me £2100 new and is little more than a paperweight at present just 3 years down the line. Some part of me if i'm honest was wishing but more than that expecting a company like Apple to say along the lines of "This has happened, it shouldn't have and will be repaired at no charge". There are many people suffering this kind of problem with this model and the existence of the knowledge base article must mean Apple knows it too. Just 3 years, £300 PCs last longer than that i'm sure. It does seem to be a very short lifespan for such a high end machine.
My apologies for droning on but I can neither afford the repair or do without the computer, my son is in his final GCSE year at school and my daughter in her pre GCSE year so a computer is critical for school homework research etc. I just do not know how to move forward, I haven't even picked the machine up yet!
This isn't a stomping Apple, one man crusade. I just need my MacBook fixed.
If anyone has had this problem and had it satisfactory resolved, knows who to speak to that may help resolve the issue please let me know.
Any other advice will be more than welcome.

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

  • No video in Logic 8

I've been working on a project in Logic 8 which involves syncing music to video. I converted the video as an mp4 and imported it into Logic and initially it was working fine. However, about halfway into this project and for no apparent reason, the video doesn't seem to play. When i start the sequencer, the video screen remains blank. I've tried re-importing the video into Logic as well as converting the video into a smaller sizes and different formats yet still I can't seem to get any picture. This has happened on both my G5 and my macbook and it's driving me crazy! Can anyone help me please?

It's possible you inadvertently gave the movie an incorrect start point. I can't remember if it's a preference or a song setting, but there is an item called "movie". Here you can change the movie start point. For instance, if the movie has a :10 countdown before the actual video portion you are working on starts, but you want this portion of the movie to start at bar 1, beat one, you are able to set the movie to start :10 into the video thereby eliminating the :10 countdown. You must also check the synchronization start time. I always set mine to start at 01:00:00:00, or exactly 1 hour, zero minutes, zero seconds, zero frames. This is dead on the one hour border. In this example you would set your movie to start 00:59:50:00, or :10 before the 1 hour border. The important thing to know is that you can set your movie to start well after your sequence. Your sync setting could be set to 01:00:00:00 but your movie could be set to 01:01:00:00. In this example, your movie would not start at all, (and probably be blank) for the first minute of the sequence. More extreme settings are possible also. So, make sure your synchronization start time is the same as your movie start time UNLESS you want an offset, like eliminating the video countdown so the program starts at bar 1, beat one. I do this all the time. I hope this helps. I tried not to get too complicated.
