Logic of time machine backup possibilities

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to replace my DVD drive with a SSD in my late 2007 (3,1) MacBook Pro (Mavericks). My question is not about the hardware, though. It's about the process regarding the software, especially concerning time machine. Please correct me if there is a error in reasoning.
Here is the current situation:
my MacBook has got 2 user accounts on it and both have got an iPhoto library with photos which are important to me.
I've got a time machine backup of the MacBooks hdd, I think it makes a backup of both user accounts but I'm not 100% sure if time machine works that way
I think the problem lies at the 2 user accounts. If there only were 1 account, I would just replace the DVD drive with the SSD, create a fresh Mavericks installation on the SSD and import / copy everything I need from the HDD. Then format the HDD and use it as a extension to the SSD.
But there are 2 libraries, so I'm not quite sure if I first have to merge the iPhoto libraries, if that even is possible, or if time machine can do that for me. Or can I just, after the replacement, open the time machine drive in finder to navigate to the iPhoto directory and copy the pictures directly onto the new SSD?
I really hope there is a normal, clever way of doing this which I just don't know.
Thank you very much for your time and help!
Best

Thank you so much. I just have one more question. As the SSD drive is smaller than the HDD, is it possible to kind of give the Setup Assistand a specific selection of what to import? For instance no video files from the desktop? (I'm making youtube videos). Thanks again!

  • Logic and Time Machine Backups

Does anybody use Time Machine and have experience on how it affects (or not) Logic?

Time Machine, yes in conjunction with Time Capsule. Providing wireless back ups & internet access. Or that is the theory behind it. My TC took TWO WEEKS to get working right & even now i have connection problems & back ups taking hours. I recently upgraded to Logic Pro 8/Studio from 7.2.3.
That shot TM & TC down. it just wouldn't back up the 42ish Gigs that installing Logic took up. So I had to unhook my TC from downstairs & plug in via ethernet to get the back up done.
Using Logic becomes near impossible when the hourly back ups come round (which incidentally, turn into every 20 mins because they take so long to complete) I get the spinning beach ball on just about everything you try to do in Logic. SO FRUSTRATING!!
Now, you could turn off the back ups, this then would allow you to get something done in Logic, but then the back up of 3 to 4 hours of work in Logic could take TM & TC an eon to complete.
I would say if you are going to do it in conjunction with TC, connect via ethernet, not wirelessly, that is just a big can of worms I can tell you.

  • Getting new Mac to find Logic sounds Time Machine backup

    Hi folks,
I recently replaced my 2009 iMac with a brand new one.  I used Time Machine to bring my stuff over to the new machine and everything's rosy, apart from Logic, which is basically what I use the computer for.
I'm having trouble with some of Logic's instruments, which aren't appearing.  Just one example:
    "EXS24 instrument "Roland TR-606 Kit.exs" not found."
Yet if I go to Spotlight I can find that kit immediately.
So my question is - how can I get Logic to "find" those instruments so it doesn't come up with the error message?
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

    Hey there Ben4646,
It sounds like you have the loops stored on your hard drive yet you cannot use them in Logic. It seems like you may need to re index the loops, and depending on the version of your program the instructions are different so choose the correct article:
Logic Pro X, GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Reindex to fix issues with Apple Loops

Had a recent crash on my macbook, was previously using OS 10.6 I think. Restored from recent Time Machine backup and updated to OS 10.8.2 and now I cannot open Logic Pro 9. I get a 'No entry' Icon and a not supported on this type of Mac message. I cannot update either as anything up to 9.1.1 tells me I don't need it yet 9.1.2 tells me I need an eligable Logic Pro Version was not found in applications.
All of my files are stored in a separate hard drive with only the actual app having been on my Macbook. Should I just reinstall?

    Hi
To run Mouitain Lion you need to update Logic.
For the updaters to work the Logic application must be:
    a) Within the Applications folder, and not in any sub-folder
    b) Named "Logic Pro" with no extra numbers or spaces

  • New Logic Board - Time Machine wants to create a new backup

This has me stumped. I just got a new hard drive and logic board from Apple. Plugged my external hard drive into my computer, turned time machine off and 'Entered Time Machine' to copy files over back to my computer. All worked as advertised.
Once I had some of my files copied over, I went to turn time machine on. Time Machine informed me that I didn't have enough space on my hard drive (it wants ~94 gigs free and it has 30 free, but it should have been able to delete the oldest backup, free up some space, and we should have moved on). At no point did it ask me if I wanted to reuse the backup or not.
I then wondered if it needed to get further along the backup process before prompting me to reuse the volume or not. So, I excluded like 98% of my hard drive and made the backup ~3 gigs. The backup happened, but now in my Backups.backupdb I have a MyComputer which contains all of my old time machine backups, and a MyComputer_2 which contains this last backup.
I trashed the MyComputer_2 folder and 'Entered Time Machine'. It pulled from the correct place and I saw my backups trailing back into history, but apparently I no longer have permission to view the desktop folder as well as the other 'protected' folders in my backed up home folder. I repaired permissions on the off chance that it would fix it, but it didn't.
Something is clearly broken, do the masses have any suggestions? I found multiple suggestions for how to deal with this under 10.5, but nothing about 10.6.
    Thank You,
    Zac

    zac850 wrote:
But what if I want to reuse my backup? How would I go about doing that? I trashed the time machine plist file (the only one i found was "Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist") in the hopes that after a restart I would be prompted to reuse the backup. No luck.
I don't know why you didn't get the "reuse" prompt, but that wouldn't prevent a new, full backup. You have a new internal HD. Even if it has the same name as the old one, Time Machine knows it's a different disk, so will back up everything on it. You cannot prevent that.
Your first problem is, you didn't transfer things onto the new drive properly (Apple Stores often give bad or misleading advice on that.)
And, you may have corrupted your backups by "trashing" the MyComputer_2 folder. Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*never move, change, or delete anything in your backups+* via the Finder.
Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that works, your best bet is probably to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You obviously had a problem with your Mac; depending on what happened and when, it's possible that damaged your installation of OSX and/or some of your data. If your last backup(s) were done after that started, the corruption may have been backed-up.
If that's a possibility, and you do the restore properly, but it fails, try it again, but select an earlier backup.

  • Since replacement of logic board I can not access Time Machine backups.

I had my logic board replaced and I can not access my Time Machine Backups. Time Machine app says that b/u's were created on another computer. Also I can not sync my iPhone with iTunes. It says that it has never been sync'd. Local Genius bar suggested that I restore my User profile from earlier back up. I tried to explain that I can not access them. Any ideas?

  • How can I use the Time Machine Backups from my Old Computer?

I have two months of Time Machine backups made using my old Macintosh computer which died and I no longer have. I have now purchased a new computer and am trying to use the Time Machine back ups from the original computer, but it will not recognise them. How can I get my new MacBook Pro to use the Time Machine Backups from my old Computer? I phoned the Apple help line and they said I cannot use them and would have to delete them. This sounds crazy if you can only use the Time Machine back up file with one computer and have to delete it when you buy a new Mac. Surely there must be some way to transfer ownership (not files) from an old to the new Mac?
    Thanks
    Richard

Thanks Kevin for the suggestion posted on MacOSXHints how to "Repair Time Machine after logic board changes".
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It seems as though I am not alone with my frustration with the way Time Machine uses the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from another. This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left off. Reading through the readers who used the fix using Terminal, it appears that the fix does not always work. I contacted Apple again, but they were no help. Surely Apple should come out with a solution as more and more people use Time Machine/Time Capsule.
It is CRAZY that after a change computers or a switch in the computer logic board that you cannot resume your Time Machine back ups.

  • Making a Time Machine Backup from a networked computer

I have two identical macbook pro laptops with identical os  Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J869)
Macbook one has a frozen screen from a bad logic card. This macbook never had time machine implimented.
Macbook two is now tied to Macbook one via firewire and I can access all of macbook one's files.
My question is, can I make a time machine backup of macbook one using the current firewire connection and then reinstall that to macbook two?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Download and install SuperDuper on MBP1's hard drive.
With MBP1 in FireWire Target Disk Mode, connect your external USB drive to MBP2 and open SuperDuper. Select MBP1's drive as the source and the external drive as the target for the clone, and select "Backup — all files". Click the Copy Now button and enter your admin password. This will make the external drive an exact, bootable replica (clone) of MBP1's hard drive, erasing anything that was on the external drive previously. It may take anywhere from half an hour to several hours, depending on how much is stored on the drive, and it will show you a progress bar to indicate how far along it is. It's a very good idea not to use the computer for anything else while this process is going on. Plan to leave it alone until the cloning is finished.
Once that's done, restart MBP2 while holding down the Option key to invoke the Startup Manager, and select the external drive to start up from. If the startup goes normally (it may be slower than normal, but otherwise should be about the same) and the computer seems to run the way you would have expected MBP1 to run if it were working, you're ready to clone the external drive onto MBP2's internal drive. This will erase everything that's now on MBP2, so make sure anything that you need to back up is taken care of before proceeding. You'll need to back that stuff up to a different external drive from the one that contains the clone of MBP1, or to burned CDs or DVDs.( In a pinch, you can back it up to the drive in MBP1 if there's room for it there, but if you do so, keep it separate from the stuff that was on MBP1 before you cloned it, so you won't have trouble finding and identifying the MBP2 backed-up data again. And don't overwrite or erase any of the stuff that was already on MBP1 until it has been safely installed on MBP2.)
When you're satisfied that everything from MBP2 that needs backing up has been attended to, open the copy of SuperDuper that now resides on the external drive. Designate that drive as the source and MBP2's drive as the target, and repeat the cloning process. When that's finished, MBP2's drive too will be an exact, bootable replica of MBP1's drive (and of the external drive, of course), and you will need only to copy back onto it whatever data you backed up from it before the second cloning operation.
The success of this procedure in producing a bootable copy of MBP1's drive on MBP2's drive relies very heavily on your statement that the two MBPs are exactly the same model. If that isn't true, all bets are off.

  • Access Time Machine Backup from a different computer

    Hi everyone,
I have recently had to put my Macbook in for repair and have been told it will be about a month before I get it back. My wife has a Macbook of her own, so I using that for the time being to continue working on my MA essays due in the next two weeks. My problem is that I dutifully did a complete backup of my files through Time Machine before sending my own Macbook away, only to find I cannot access the files on my wife's computer!
I realise this is completely my fault, but the files in the Time Machine backup represent months of work and I desperately need access to them! I have tried accessing the backups via Time Machine, and when this failed I went through Finder to the Backup folder on my external hard drive, only to find a little no entry sign next to the relevant folders. When I try to open them I get told I 'do not have sufficient access privileges'. Is there ANY way around this? I am desperate!

You should post this with something to do with "Access privileges" in the title so the right people read it - those who don't use Time Machine probably won't bother with this thread. You were right to try a direct-access route through the Finder, because you can drag Time Machine files directly when you need to. I don't know enough about permissions to help you with the permission thing; it might be as simple as setting up an account on your wife's machine that has the same username and password as your own machine.
But note (in regard to the Jeremy's post) that if you do get a new logic board - yes, he's right, you'll have a different MAC address, which means you can't continue on with your TM backups. But you can't change the MAC address on the logic board; instead, there's a nice, geeky way to change the Time Machine backups record of what MAC address they were married to. You'll find the info here:

I had to do a "recovery" from Time Machine backup and since Safari will quit unexpectedly every time and I have to use Firefox.
The must do "recovery" came about because the system was hanging with the gearbox spinning and never starting up the system.
My system is: Mac Pro early 2008 running on OS X 10.9.4. Before the permanent hangs system as running very, very slow.

  • Resume Time Machine Backup On New MBP (props available)

    Hello Officials,
I do not mean to scare away answers, but I am an experienced Mac boy, and would be forever honored with help on (this now) complicated issue below:
    Info:
My old MBP had a couple of logic board replacements, now I have the new MBP. I want to perform a clean install, and thus don't want to restore from my full time machine backup (3.3TB of data). I did use Migration-sh't-Assitant for my apps, (and proper delete process for ones I didn't want) but want further options. My main problem is that I would like to go back to having my old version of Mail (with mailbox's and rss) and my old +Address Book+. (I am aware of the longer steps to get these two to work) _As well as_, I want to resume my Time Machine backups from my old backups.
    Goal:
Continue using my old Time Machine backups for my new computer. Without 'Browse Other..'.
*You Should Know -That I Know*
I can hold option for a different Time Machine, it is a terrible way to operate the machine and its files.
It is a challenge due to the MAC address.
I can just re-sync Mail with all my other accounts, but I have a lot. I don't want to do that.
Address Book, even on my 'Browse other time machine disks' this is quite funky. Open to suggestions.
I already moved the backup onto a new drive. This is different.

An interesting terminal walkthrough. Unfortunately is dated and filled with errors:

I have been looking into this for hours, I'm interested in what there is.
    _*+THIS IS POSSIBLE TO DO+*_
I sincerely thank you for your time, you are truly kind-

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
But there are no "officials" here; this is a user-to-user forum. We're all users, just like you.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean the old versions of the Mail and Address book apps, or the old data? What version of OSX is on each Mac?

That's outdated (2008), and not needed on Snow Leopard. When the first backup of your new Mac starts, you should get an option to "re-use" the backups. See #B5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). But note that however you answer that, Time Machine will do a new, full backup of the new Mac.

  • Time Machine backup of iTunes didn't - folders are almost all empty.....

Posted this in the iTunes forum as that's what I'm trying to restore using Time Machine, but thought I'd try here too
    Here's what happened....
Having a small hard drive on my old but current eMac and running out of room I decided to move my iTunes library to my external Lacie drive (with over 80 gb free)
I checked the Apple documents for what to do and was reminded to make a backup
I ran a last back up to Time Machine, which I have used a few times for document recovery and know that it works and how to use it, and then set up my new destination folder on the Lacie and deleted my iTunes library from its original location.
Now when I go into Time Machine, and no I didn't exclude anything from being being backed up, I can find the iTunes library, and the folders with each named artist, but every folder is empty, there are no music files. (Or rather there is one named 'Unknown Album' and a sub directory called 'Unknown Artist' which has a small selection of unamed audio)
Each iTunes Music folder is at about 800mb - the unnamed audio mentioned above
I have gone all the way back (though I have not opened every backup yet) to October 2007 when I did the first Time Machine backup on installing Leopard, and every backup I have explored has empty artist folders.
'Find' also seems to work only in a limited way with the TM files - a search for 'Music' for example should logically find every 'Music' folder back to the start of TM but doesn't even though I can find them manually in each backup
Does anyone have any ideas of where or whether there might be a full backup; even from October 2007 would be better than nothing! I 'only' had about 9gb of audio, though some is custom, one off work.
My basic assumption here is that the first TM backup would have backed up everything and then only alterations and additions as they occurred
    Thanks so much in advance
    Stephen

    Death By Media and Kiraly
Thanks so much for the ideas and suggestions - no libraries were excluded, hmmm, and only one user account....
Do I have an iPod with the songs on it?
Well I can still see all the items I have lost in Music in iTunes (all of which come up with an exclamation mark and a 'can't find, do you want to locate the library' message...) so I know what went missing
I do have a 1st generation shuffle with some tracks on it, and some burnt CDs, and some Downloads which were saved by Time Machine
Of the 9GB or so about 6GB were from CDs or vinyl that I own so no huge deal - though the vinyl takes so much time doesn't it
1GB was almost everything by a favourite artist of which about 30% were rare recordings, live shows etc (*all legal downloads I must add*) which took lots of time to find, and convert etc
Then the recordings of conferences and presentations which are irreplaceable
Then there are the 250 or so purchased songs from iTunes which I really don't want to have to buy again.....
Any other ideas where at least the original archive created by Time Machine might be hiding...?
    Thanks again
    Stephen

  • Time Machine backup to AEBS external hard drive

Buy in haste, repent at leisure they say. I needed a new wireless router and thought the AEBS looked just the thing - and a quick look on the spec page showed you could connect an external hard drive via USB - great, I could back up all our computers wirelessly I thought, using Time Machine. Didn't see the small print that says you cannot do this, tho' can't see why Apple couldn't make it work.
I have had a whole string of hard drives go down in the past year, LaCie, Maxtor, WD, and two internal hard drives from a MacBook and a MacBook Pro. The only ones that seem bullet proof are the Gtech drives I have for editing in Final Cut so I bought one of those for our communal Time Machine drive.
To begin with everything worked fine despite Apple not supporting this set up. Then with a regular Software update I must have upped the firmware to 7.4.2 and the system stopped working. I discovered the problem and went back to 7.4.1 but no joy. Then, inexplicably, it began to work again later that day so I just breathed a sigh of relief. Now it's happened again - I realised that I had updated to 7.4.2 again - presumably from a Snow Leopard update, and I am now unable to get it going again even after going back to 7.4.1.
I can select the external HD so that it appears on the desk top as a wireless drive, it appears in the list of available disks in TM, but if you ask it to back up it takes an age to return a message saying it 'could not access the sparsebundle (error 109).
It seems to me I have invested heavily in a system that is never going to work but I wondered if there was some way of backing up manually over the wireless link using another type of back up system? Or are there other things I should try? I know some people seem to have this set up working fine...

The problem here is the way Apple chooses to implement Time Machine Backup in 10.6.x to a Network volume. When TM first came out myself and a bunch of similarly naive Unix hackers figured we could get the best of both worlds by backing up with Time Machine to a backed up or otherwise redundant network volume using Time Machine. But in the beginning TM didn't backup to network volumes. It does now by creating a sparse bundle on the network volume and backing up to the Sparse bundle as if it were a physical, local, disk drive. I seems logical to infer that Time Machine was written to backup to locally connected disk drives which differ from network disk drives in one very important respect: You can tell a local, physical disk drive that you need to know the status of any given write operation and you can trust that result with a reasonably high degree of confidence. That same can't be said for a write to network drive so Apple fakes it by creating a Pseudo Drive or Disk Image Drive on the network volume and writing way. The Sparse Bundle Error comes up when the Pseudo Drive wasn't put away correctly. There are filesystem repair programs to fix this condition which are described in other threads. Dig around for "fsck sparse bundle" on Google the next time this happens and you may be able to rescue things.

  • Does Time Machine backup items on the time machine disk?

If I designate disk B as my Time Machine disk, are items on disk B, that aren't part of what Time Machine puts there, backed up?  In other words, can I use a disk for both storage and Time Machine backups and have those stored items backed up too?

If you intend to use disk B as both a Time Machine Backup Disk and a Data disk to hold your files, the only way to do that would be to partion the Disk B volume.
How do I partition an external hard drive ?
When an external is connected to a mac, the computer sees that Hard Drive as a Volume. Paritioning the volume is the ability to "Split" the volume in more parts that are limited by size. Time Machine will use the entire partition of a volume if the whole volume is used as a single partition. If you use the right tools and "Split" the external hard drive in smaller logical volumes then you can comfortably use the external hard drive for both your Time Machine Backups and your Data that you want to carry on an external drive.
The easiest way to partition a volume in more the one partition or logical volumes is to use the Disk Utility application that comes with every mac. Use the Finder to go to your Utilities folder and open Disk Utility, or search for it in Spotlight.  Whit Disk Utility you can select your external Hard Drive and either change the partition to add a second one or erase all data on the existing external hard drive and create 2 Partitions that you can adjust in size. Remember Make sure you understand that if you choose to erase the existing external drive to make room for a new partition , that all data present on the external drive will be deleted.
Now that you have your two new partitions you can assign one to Time Machine and use the second one for Data. And with Time Machine Options you will be able to exclude or include your new external data partition to backup to your new Time Machine Backup Partition !

  • Using external hard drives for Time Machine backups

I would like to let everyone know about an important issue regarding what type of media to use, or better said not to use for Time Machine backups.
I tried to use a RAID 0 array disks ( FIY: RAID is a storage technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy and performance improvement.), but after a few minutes the backup suddenly stopped giving me a message of failing to write to the disk.
I tried to back up several more times, but the result was the same.  I called Apple Customer Support, they said there was nohing wrong using a RAID 0 array disk combination.
I checked the RAID disks with disk utility, the disks were okay, but it did not solve the problem.
I reformatted the RAID disks, but that did no help either.
Then I used a different disk not part of any RAID array, and the Time Machine backup was able to successfull finish he task.
I called Apple to tell them about this issue, and they finall confirmed I was right:
Conclusion: backing up to a RAID 0 array disks using Time Machine does not work

Is there anything else on the drive?  If not, just erase it with Disk Utility.
If there is, have you emptied the trash?  That will take a very long time, and may present problems wtih locked files, permissions, etc.  If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
