Logic or Cubase???

What do you reckon, this is for both recording audio and producing midi with different plugins

Logic, for sure...especially on the Mac. Cubase SX 3 is highly optimized for the PC, and provides much better performance on a PC vs. the Mac. I'd say if you are a long-time Cubase user, you'd be best to stick with it and move to the PC platform.
But on the Mac, Logic is the DAW to beat. It's not perfect, but is easily the most CPU efficient, comes with the best plug-in set on either platform, and integrates well with Pro Tools (finally!), should you need that.
I used Cubase SX back in the 1.0 days (and Cubase VST on OS 9), and I couldnt get my head around the toy-store like interface. I'd use Digital Performer before Cubase.
Get Logic, learn it inside out, and be happy.

  • The core audio for Logic 8 has stopped working.

I was successfully running Logic 8, Protools LE and Cubase on a MacPro with Leopard (10.5.5) and a MOTU traveler interface. I loaded on the Ignition Pack bundled with Protools LE (Mbox mini), including Melodyne/Reason/Live 6. This then stopped me opening any of my programs, Logic, Protools, Cubase and Garageband.
I have surfed several forums and found that Melodyne has caused the same problem for others. Following advice given on these forums I have...
    - Deinstalled all new programmes, including all links, files, rewire stuff
    - I have trashed Logic preferences
    - I have completely reinstalled Logic
    - I have updated the latest MOTU drivers and Apple software updates
I can open Logic using Ctrl and selecting 'no' to core audio, but when I change the core audio, either to MOTU or built-in, and enable Logic freezes and I have to force quit. I have read other threads with people having the same problem, but after following all the advice the problem is still there. Help!
Just for info: I cannot not open Cubase, Protools or Garageband, but there is no problem with standalone Kontakt 2, Itunes, Soundtrack Pro, Waveburner or Mainstage, using the MOTU.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Sounds like a problem with an incompatible version of either Melodyne or Rewire.
Rewire is used to connect application. Ex. Reason can run rewired into Logic, the audio output of Reason will appear as a separate audio channel in Logic.
Two choices... see if your version of Rewire can be upgraded to the latest version. (don't know if that's even compatible)
Remove Rewire from your system, move the rewire plugin out of it's folder, to the desktop. (run a search)
The other plugin that might be giving you problems is Melodyne, move the plugin to the desktop. Again, run a search to find this stuff.

  • Using Folders in Logic 8

I'm newly switched to Logic from Cubase. Question on using folders properly!
If I drag say 6 guitar tracks from the bin in to the arrange page. Then select all those new regions/tracks and 'pack' them in to a folder. I'm left with a bunch of newly created empty tracks in the arrange page, that I then have to delete. Am I doing this right? I also have to rename all the channel strips in the 'all' mixer page, otherwise they are all just named 'audio<x>'.
The track names in the folder all match the region names which is what you'd want. (When you double click the folder, to navigate in to it).
This could simply be my lack of interpreting what's in the manul - or is it a bit clunky yet??

Welcome to the forum and to the sometimes illogical world of Logic.
Yup. That's pretty much the way things are. You're left with unused tracks. The reasoning goes something like this. You may have several regions on a track but only want to pack some of them. You'd do this, for example, if you have a bunch of regions that you then wanted to loop. You can loop folders but you can't loop separate regions that are consecutive.
So, you pack some regions but you want to leave the tracks behind because they have other regions in them. Logic's answer? Never delete the tracks, regardless of whether you've emptied them or not. I can see a lot of people applauding this approach. At least Logic doesn't get rid of things that you're about to use. If you don't want them, just delete them.
    Have fun!

  • Logic pro x mixer window freezes main out VU with dual monitors

In a dual display configuration, with the mixer window in the left monitor and arrange window in the right monitor, the VU meter on the last channel strip to the far right of the mixer window(which is usually the main output) freezes and does not update. This seems to be a Logic X bug, since it does not occour in Logic 9 or any other DAW with the same configuration.
Can anyone confirm this or have a suggestion for a solution?
    Thanks in advance

They have had four years to change this, and actually people were asking for it before that. If anyone knows a way, let us know, but I doubt it. Both Logic and Cubase are the only two DAWS that don't allow this....all the majors do....Pro Tools, DP, Studio One, etc. Cubase users have been asking for it forever as well.
I would have upgraded immediately if they had added this, they haven't, and I'm moving over to PT11.

  • Losing Logic instrument presets between sessions

PLEASE HELP! I can't find the answer to this anywhere. Why do the instruments I use in my logic 8 sessions reset themselves when i return to the same session? I am Saving my sessions and doing all I can to retain it but when i come back to the session the instruments have changed from what i saved them as when i last left the session into what seems like random instruments. Its killing me!

cool i thought it may have been that, but surely logic by version 8 have consolidated your work space so you don't have to save every setting on every instrument? and do these settings get saved in the session folder or in some random part of the program file? i'm new to logic from cubase and reason and these things just don't make sense yet, it's regarded as one of the best though so i'll persevere. thanks a lot for the help erik!

  • LogicPro synchronization with Cubase on one Mac?

Anyone did it? With IAC driver?
I would like to use CubaseSX only as MIDI sequencer - I do dnot need any sound to come out of Cubase...
My goal is to import a MIDI drum track to Cubase and edit it here within Cubase Drum editor, while audition the sound from Logic.
I had a success with sending MIDI to Logic through one of IAC BUS. In Logic enviroment I routed the cable from the IAC BUS on the Physical input to Audio Instrument object where some Drum sampler plugin like DFHS or BFD is inserted. Easy and fast, MIDI data from MIDI track in Cubase are "travelling" to AU Instrument in Logic fine.
Ofcourse there has to be another IAC BUS MIDI port used for synchronizing the playback of the two DAWs. And this is where I was not that succesfull. I tried MTC, also Midi Clock but I never get smooth playback in sync. The tempo started to drift always after playing back song a while and it sounded like a broken Tape deck :))
I choosed Built in audio as a CubaseSX audio driver while Logic was using my mLan network. Maybe I should try to share my mLan audio/midi network between Logic and Cubase?
Anybody tried to do something like that?

I'm using Logic regularly as slave synchronized with MIDI clock via IAC to other applications as master (also Cubase SX). But in my experience it works perfectly only if both sequencers are set to the same tempo beforehand. So I'm using MIDI clock just for start/stop synchronization.
Btw, you don't need a separate IAC bus for transmitting MIDI clock.

  • Why Logic and not protools other than midi

why have users chosen Logic over protools...not a debate but just a little feedback, Thanks.

Not wishing to debate either. The following are my opinions based on having worked on both systems:
    - Logic's MIDI editing/arranging capabilities (and ease of access) far exceed those of PT. For me, PT's MIDI implementation is a welcome addition to more recent versions, but it's downright primitive compared to Logic, DP, Cubase, etc.
    - Many important MIDI manipulation functions can be carried out non-destructively and in real time, including velocity, gating, transposition, and delay.
    - Extensive notation capabilities that come close to those of dedicated notation programs such as Finale and Sibelius
    - Audio operations are, in some respects, much easier in Logic than PT. For example, if you have a 1-measure drum loop that you want to run down through an entire track, you need only to place the first instance of it in Logic's Arrange window. Turn loop on and voila, it's done. No copying/pasting required. I can think of other operations that, to me, are much more easily accomplished in Logic than PT but I'm trying to keep this reply brief.
    - Aliases of audio regions can be created, so changes to the original region are automatically reflected in all aliases (no sure if PT offers that).
    - Compatibility with a wide variety of audio file types with no file type conversion necessary.
    - User-definable key commands
    - Ability to group tracks in folders (to cut down on eye-clutter, and, to easily mute/solo groups of tracks). I know this can be accomplished with Groups in PT, but having worked on both systems, Logic's folders are more intuitive and easier to deal with.

  • Please Help: Brand new to Logic and Mac at the same time

    Dear Board,
I joined the Mac family yesterday and have done pretty well with getting Logic and Cubase 4 installed on the Mac. (It's like trying to learn Spanish when you're from Alabama)
However, when I assign an instrument track to ESX sampler, no libraries or presets come up. I can hear one sound, but when I pull down the menu to load another sound, there are no other sounds to be found. Do I have them stored in the wrong place or did they not automatically load when I installed Logic?
Specifically, I am looking for a decent acoustic piano sound, but can't make it work.
I migrated from Logic 5 on PC to this setup yesterday, so it's all new to me. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    B3

Well a fellow Las Vegan, that is something I
havent seen since I have been on this forum.
Anyway welcome and good choice to go with
Logic Pro 7. This app is a constant challenge.
First I have to ask an obvious question, did you
install the contents disc? That is the one with all
the samples on it. Since you have been using a
different version, I assume you know how the
EXS works so that should not be the issue.
If you click on the black area no menus come up?
Or do empty menus come up? We will get it going,
this sounds like misplaced files. Phil

  • Logic nodes over switched ether-network?

    Hi,
I'm planning to setup a 3-mac network as well as takng the leap from to Logic from Cubase.
Can anyone tell me if the Logic-node system will work over an ether-network (via a switch) or does it have to be a direct Mac-Mac connection?
Also, over what length cable run might latency be introduced?
I may also want to use FX-Teleport over the network when it becomes available for the Mac. The same questions apply...will it work via a switch?
And at what point might Midi/Audio latency be an issue?
    Thanks in advance.
    Colin

Colin, just to reassure you, I just bought a cheap D-Link 10/100/1000 8 port switch and replaced by old 10/100 one. I replaced the two cables (Powerbook and G5) with proper Cat5e ones and my node works just fine at opposite ends of the house. Luckily the house wiring I installed was Cat5e already. For some reason Logic has trouble compensating for latency on the EXS24 sampler, but all the other processes seem to have no latency at all. I tested the two machines in the same room with 1 metre CAT5e cables, and the latency is exactly the same. One thing to watch is that even when Logic tells you that it is processing particular tracks on the node, it actually doesn't seem to lessen the CPU load on the host until it absolutely has to. One particular song of mine has about 80% CPU on my Powerbook, and at one point in the song would very often stop with an overload message. Now with the node engaged it STILL shows 80% host CPU, but the difference is that when I reach the dangerous part, Node activity shows up on the meter, and I don't get the error. Cool!

  • Collaborating with Cubase User

Are there any Logic Pro 8 users here collaborating with Cubase users? If so, I could use some tips on how to most efficiently share files. OMF appears only to be useful for transfers between Logic, Digital Performer and ProTools. Is there anything similar for exporting/importing between Logic and Cubase?
I've tried the manual and the new Logic Pro 8 training book from David Nahmani...and I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
    Thanks!
    Lee

    Lee,
    Which version of Cubase?
Cubase can import OMF files as of version 2 (or is it 3?)
OMF only deals with audio files, if MIDI tracks are also being used save the MIDI data as a "Format-1" MIDI file and import the MIDI tracks following the OMF import.
Any version of Cubase-SX uses Broadcast Wave format files, these retain an internal time stamp. Logic 8 also does Broadcast Wave format.
I often start projects in Logic, render to Broadcast Wave, import to Cubase (running on an Athlon-64 PC) after importing to Cubase, select all files and then "Move to Original Position" and everything snaps into place.

  • Logic synths any good for producing ambient/meditative/spacescape sounds?

    Hi
I'm thinking of switching from a PC/Cubase to Mac/Logic Studio. However there are loads and loads of smaller synths/vsts that only run on the PC.
Are the synths in Logic Studio any good at producing ambient/meditation/spacescape/atmospheric types sounds?(or does anybody know of any VSTs that are? Atmosphere is a bit pricey and I already have Absynth).
The sort of sounds I'm interested in are by synths such as these:

Hi, I have to say I'm not familiar with parallels or fusion (I'll check them out though thanks). But it sounds interesting. I have held off installing windows on my mac because I want to become familiar with OSX before I get involved(if ever). I have tried running logic 8 and cubase 4 together and that was interesting. Mainly because the atmosphere plugin (which runs on a wrapper basis under logic / intel at the moment) actually worked within cubase 4 on my intel mac(as the old vst which did not use rosseta(I think?), and quite well. The problem I had was I could play atmosphere from within logic, in cubase with my virus ti as a controller but it would not play back after recording, but that was because the ti was setup in both progs as the midi input! I was amazed it actually worked to some degree. It really boils down to what it is you want to achieve I suppose. I have spent most of this year waiting for software updates so I can a) get stuff fully working on the intel mac platform, and of course, being the fool that I am, b) waiting for updates so they could once again work with leopard! When I think back to the days of me, my atari and my akai sampler, I used to get stuff done! Now i just seem to be looking for updates all the time.... No excuses though, they were my decisions! Ah well, it's all good fun I suppose. Not much help i'm afraid....Cheers.

  • Melodyne or Pitch Tool ( like in Cubase 5 ) would be REALLY  COOL!!!

Finally,Logic 9 came out. Well, sure Apple made another awesome DAW for us. No doubt Logic is really the best for MIDI and Audio workhouse for us. But I just noticed, why didn't they add a built in Pitch editing Tool like Cubase 5 has?? Well the Pitch correct and some pitch plug-ins work in Logic, but I just think that it'll be much easier for us to have them dragged and shift pitches on the fly ( like Melodyne plug-in ). Forgive me guys if I missed something in Logic to this situation, but other than the Flex time and other new features they added,a BUILT IN PITCH EDITOR would have been much COOLER_))
Just my opinion. What u think guys? Cubase 5 has that tool, why cant Apple make it happen in Logic then? ( don't get me wrong,I know Melodyne's exclusive only to Cuabse or Steinberg, does that mean Apple gave up looking for other companies with such awesome tools? ) _))
Untill that day comes,I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping Apple would something about this request or idea of mine ( I guess many of us thought of it too _)) CHEERS!!!
    Message was edited by: nxtlevel

I must add this,as I'm using Cubase AI4 for now ( because it integrates well with Motif XS ),I'm starting to see the difference between Logic and Cubase apps. I've used Logic for years now ( currently and STILL using Logic Studio ),but after using Cubase AI4 ( which by the way is inlcuded free with the Motif XS synth ),I'm beginning to have a thought on getting Cubase 5. I used to be a Nuendo-die-hard-user before_) But ever since my friend introduced me to Mac,logic is the way to go. For years I've been happy with using Logic, especially the logic Studio. But after all these years,it's REALLY SAD that Apple didn't thought of one simple thing that matters most to us : EASIER PITCH EDITING TOOLS. But then again,I guess we all have our own needs and say about certain things,if I can sing like Brian Mcknight,**** yeah,I wouldn't mind having a MELODYNE or some pitch editing stuff. Scary but makes sense : This is the downside of ALL DOWNSIDES that Apple had come up with Logic (( Aside from numerous BUGS on Logic Studio,a better and easier Pitch Editing tool would have been the more significant upgrades Logic 9 has made )...
Unless Apple do something about this, for me,Logic 9 would be a second thought upgrade . Again, these are just my opinion, nothing againts anybody who uses Logic_))
And by the way,Logic 9 supporting VST 3 plugins would really be nice and COOL too!!. If some of these things do come-true,**** YEAH,LET"S GO GET SOME LOGIC 9 PEOPLE!!! LOGIC 9 WOULD RULE THE DAW UNIVERSE!!!_)) Cheers!!

  • Using a virus ti in logic...

    hey there..
i am really struggling and have looked everywhere for answers but got no where so this is my last resort really.. i am using apples logic pro 9 and cannot get the virus's 3 outputs working.. theres millions of similiar posts but they dont cover it fully.. i just need to know what im doing wrong..
first of all i open an instrument track and select the virus ti multi output option.. then on the mixer strip theres the little plus tab what you can click twice to get the other available 2 outputs showing..
i just dont know where to go from here..
i have just switched to logic from cubase a week or so ago..
in cubase you could simply create the vst instrument but then you could add a further 15 midi tracks assigned to each of the virus's 15 other channels so you could have a different pattern for each of the different sounds..
this is what i am trying to achieve in logic pro 9..
do i need to bus them or something i just really dont know and i cant seem to figure it out
    please help
    thanks and regards danny rowbotham

Do you really want to use different outputs for different patches, or do you just want to use 16 MIDI channels with a different patch on each, but have them come out of the same outputs? The start of your post suggests the former and the end suggests the latter.
I'll assume you want different MIDI channels: create a instrument channel with the Virus TI instrument as normal. In the inspector, set MIDI channel to 1. Now go to the Track menu in the Arrange window and select "New with Next MIDI Channel" (or hit option-command-M). Repeat for however many channels you want. Each of these tracks will play the patch on the corresponding channel in the Virus TI.
    Hope that helps.

  • Moving out of Cubase...

I'm currently running Cubase SL3 on my good ol', trusty 867MHz 12in. Powerbook. For what I'm doing now, it's perfectly fine.
However, I will be in the market by the end of the year for both a new G5 tower (debating over that one right now) AND Logic 7. Since I am a college student, I get the nice 50% discount on Logic (teehee...). I'll also be getting the usual upgrades... perhaps the video card up to 256MB, AT LEAST a gig and a half of RAM, I'll have an external FW harddrive already, I have a 20in Apple Display... so I'll be set. I'll also be looking at a nice interface with at least 8 mic inputs as opposed to my current one's measely 2... Probably will be FW-based (not PCI) since I'll be out of money by then!
What more I am I getting with Logic over Cubase (even Cubase SX)? Every guy I talk to in an Apple store who deals with sequencers, audio, etc., says Logic is superior to every other recording app in the market... but is this just propaganda or is it true? I mean, if the best version of Cubase is $400 cheaper than Logic, Logic has gotta have something good.
(btw, I mess around with Logic Express in the stores and am quite impressed with the simplicity and usability.)

All I have to say is that I was a devout Pro Tools user. Swore by it. Initially when I brought Logic Pro 7 I encountered some frustrations about accurately syncing it with my MPC sequencer and using third party plugins. But about 3 months later, I have a sence of mastery over the program and its by far the best thing on the market. Its a musicians/engineer's dream. Besides my MPC 2000XL its probaly the best investment I made thus far. Workflow is just so seemless I feel like I'm cheating some times, Plugins galore. Plus I really haven't even scratched the surface of what this program can do yet. Its worth a lot more than 1000 dollars.

  • How can I have several arrange tracks for one instrument mute independently

hi... if i create several arrange tracks with the 'New with same channel strip/instrument' command i cant mute them in the arrange window independently it seems ? For example i want 10 arrange tracks all playing the same Battery Kit/instance but be able to mute them independently through automation for example. For the moment when i mute one of the tracks the whole instrument gets muted.
i'm a bit confused since i'm new to logic from cubase ... can i not just use 'midi tracks and parts' like in cubase ?

    chindustronik wrote:

My first though was to suggest that you check Preferences>Audio>General, and make sure "Track Mute/Solo" is set to "CPU Saving (Slow response). This will allow you to mute and solo each track copy individually.
However, this will not help you in this situation, because the mute button will be muting the actual channel strip, like a mixer, so you will always be muting the whole thing.
It's easiest to simply make cuts right on the MIDI regions, and mute the regions themselves, in the spots of the song you want them muted. Either that, or mute the MIDI on/off events themselves, within the Piano Roll window.
