Logic Pro 10, Garage Band.

Hey guys.
I just did a fresh OSX install on my Macbook.
I have not added the additional content (ie, Garage Band, etc.)
I have yet to re-download logic pro X.
Do I have to have Garage Band installed to use Logic Pro X?
Trying to keep my hard drive clean as possible.
I want to use this machine for multi tracking, nothing else.
Thanks.

  • Logic Pro (and Garage Band) guitar bug.

This is a rather irritating bug that happens constantly on my set up. I can play guitar for a couple of minutes then the sound cuts out but then plays after about a three second delay. This happens in both Logic Pro 9 and Garage band but not in Ableton Live or other apps.
At first I thought it was an interface problem (UA-101) till everything worked without a hitch in Ableton Live. The interface lights also show no delay. I've got a new MacBook pro with Leopard on it with latest versions of Logic and Garage band.
Anyone else seen this before or know of others that have had this problem. Any suggestions of what I could do to fix it?

Well I dont get this but I use Apogee Duet, so there could be the difference. Process buffer range could make some difference, set it to low in Preferences/Audio. The other obvious thing is to check the buffer size in preferences is set as low as possible.

  • Setting up macbook pro with garage band and a mixing desk. NEED HELP ASAP!!

Hi everybody i have an issue which has been an issue for some time now.
i have a Behringer XENYX1222fx mxing desk, and a new macbook pro with the software 10.6.2 i am also using Garage band 09. when using this i am trying to set up my bass guitar through the mixing desk and the DI box which connects through a usb to the mac.
i can not get a signal/level come through to the macbook on garage band. i am getting a signal through on the mixing desk but nothing at all on garage band.
can someone send me the instructions to set it up? is it in system preferences in the input and output i really dont know please can i have as many options as possible.
    Many thanks
    Scott

Scott, I can relate. It's happened to me too!
It's time to play signal chain detective.
First, are you sure you are getting output from your bass? Plug it into an amp and test. (Once I figured out that the battery in my bass had died. New battery: problem solved.)
Once you know you're getting a signal from the bass, then check to be sure the mixer is outputting the signal. Run the outputs from the mixer into an amp.
Once you know your bass and mixer are cooperating, then it is time to engage the interface.
Be sure the preferences for the input to recgonize the interface are set BOTH in GarageBand and the OS generally. The problem is that when you connect an interface, GarageBand will see it and ask if you want to use that or line in. Be sure the interface is selected. For the OS preferences, click on the Apple logo and go to system preferences.
Finally, you might ask a friend to bring over an Apple laptop to eliminate the possibility of something wrong with your MBP, or lug your gear to his or her house, and try it. (Just remember to leave with all the settings restored to how you found them.)
If you live within reach of an Apple store, you can go to the genius bar.
And if nothing works, you can pay for a call to Apple support, or perhaps the support line for the maker of your audio interface.
Good luck. I know it can be frustrating when you want to make music ad you are spending a lot of time horsing around with the technology.

  • Launching a Logic session in Garage Band

Is it possible to open a Logic 6.4.3 session in Garage Band 3? I'm using a MacPro Intel. I get an error saying the drive is damaged when I try to launch the session. Thanks for any advise. DW

GB will not open any logic version file (later versions of logic can open GB files)

  • Permissions problems with sound track pro and garage band

I am having a problem with the loops and sounds in Garageband and SoundTrack Pro. When I attempt to use a sound in garage band,  I get an error "an eror occurred   result code = -5000   File = Garageband-Temp-54E281E". When I do a search there are about 58 separate folders with loops or effects in them. If I isolate the one I want to use and change the permissions of the folder to everyone read and write I can use the sound, but I don't want to manually change the permissions for 58 seperate folders. I ran repair permissions using disk utility but that did not fix it. Any suggestions, I have a lab of 22 imacs, if it was just one I would just fix the permissions on it but for 22 separate machines, I would like some automation. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll also add that I'm pretty sure I used this microphone along with the iMic USB a few years ago when I had my 'quicksilver' Mac G4 and it worked with that machine. As noted above, I've tried it with both a 2 channel and both the mono channel settings in Garage Band; but I am using a 1/4" to 1/8" jack adapter in order to plug into the iMic's 1/8" receptacle. The adapter is stereo to stereo, meaning it has both contacts for r & l. That shouldn't make a difference should it? In my experience if you are using mono equipment (like a single microphone) the sound will still be delivered through one of the two channels.

  • How can I use the three new Logic drummers in Garage Band?

I have the latest version of GarageBand and the latest version of MainStage, but I have not upgraded to the latest version of Logic. However, the three new drummers available with the latest update to Logic are now visible in Drummer for GarageBand. When I click on one, GarageBand asks me to download (yet again) 5 GB of content. This download has never allowed me to use the new drummers. I have restarted in Safe Boot mode and tried the installation that way, but I get the same result.
    Thanks.

Which version of GarageBand are you asking about?
GarageBand '11 requires an internal optical drive, and the newest GarageBand 10.0 as well.
Insert a recordable CD in your computer’s optical drive. Before burning, be sure your computer supports the recordable CD you are using. Only computers with disc-burning capability can be used to burn a song to a CD.
Choose Share > “Burn Song to CD.”
Added: It does not help, to share the song to iTunes and burn a playlist from iTunes, since iTunes requires an internal optical drive as well.

  • Stuttering Strings when I import to Logic X from Garage Band

Help, I can't get my IOS Garageband arrangements to playback smoothly in LogicX (or Garageband for OSX for that matter). The problem occurs on any song I create with the strings smart instrument on either the iPad or iPhone. The other instruments all work fine. But the strings are all stuttery and intermittent, especially when I use the legato gesture (finger sliding up and down). FYI I can import the songs into Logic 9 with no problem.
I have tried to update Logic X and Garageband with all the latest downloadable content, but nothing has fixed the problem. I am up to date on released updates.
    Any ideas?

Sharing with iTunes is OK, but it is likely to produce a file in MP3 or AAC, which can cause problems. You can create an AIFF version of an MP3 file in iTunes and use that.
To create an AIFF version, go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General Tab. Click the Import Settings button. Choose Import Using: AIFF Encoder. Then choose your track, and click FILE/CREATE AIFF Version. Use this in FCPX. Be sure to go back into iTunes Preferences and set the import options back to where you had it, so the next time you rip an CD it does not make an AIFF.

  • HT4436 How do i send tunes created on my macbook pro's Garage Band to the icloud so I can have them on my iPad?

I can see how to move songs created on iPad to the cloud but cannot see how to this from my MacBook Pro, so i can have them on my iPad.  Can someone help please?  thanks

The iOS version of GarageBand can utilize iCloud to share songs between iOS devices.
I don't believe there is a corresponding feature in the OS X version of GarageBand.

  • Which midi controller works best with Logic Pro?

I want pads to make drum loops etc.   I'd also like to slice and edit samples.  So far I've looked at Akai MPCs and N.I. Maschine.

OK I found one... the Akai LPD8.  Excellent product.  It is so much more intuitive to play drums on these 8 pads rather than on the keyboard. You don't need the displays or extra pads of the more expensive models.  This has a nice on screen editor that is very programmable and it was plug-and-play in UltraBeat.  It's powered through the supplied USB cable so you don't need a power adapter. This is strictly a controller and has no on-board sounds but the sounds in Logic Pro and Garage Band are amazing. Well worth the $49.95!  You can slice and dice in Logic so that function isn't needed; similar effects can be acheived by simply holding down the pad and releasing it as a sound is modulated.  Also it is very portable - the size of your laptop keyboard.  Great fun!

  • Logic Pro 9 and GarageBand '11 won't recognize MIDI controllers

    Hi there,
I have two MIDI controllers that are not getting picked up by Logic or Garage Band and I'm unable to figure out why. I'm running Mac OS 10.9.4 (Mavericks) on a Mac Mini with a 250 GB SSD and 4 GB of RAM.
Setup 1 is a simple Acorn Masterkey 49 USB controller whose manufacturer claims needs no drivers, although it doesn't show up in my Audio/MIDI setup pane at all, no matter how many times I restart the computer and/or the controller in any combination. I can't use it with Logic or with Garage Band.
Setup 2 is a Digi002 Rack connected to the Mac Mini by Firewire and connected to an old-school Korg M1 as a MIDI controller. I can launch and hear the tracks I've made in the past with Logic, but now that Korg M1 is invisible even though the Core Audio Manager says my Digi002 Rack is connected and running. This setup has really never been able to speak with Garage Band, although I have been able to connect it successfully in the past.
I'm a newbie to this and don't know how to get under the hood to fine-tune MIDI set-ups within Logic or GarageBand. Is there something funky going on between Logic 9 and Mavericks, however? I'm beginning to wonder if that's the issue.
    With thanks,
    Dustin.

    Hi Dustin,
Nice to see someone pose a complete question with all the details...
First thing to do would be to delete Logic's preferences and the control surface preferences. Although I don't think it's going to help. I'll post the method at the end of this post.
One of the problem with older MIDI devices is that Apple changed something in their MIDI spec and some older MIDI devices either don't work (not recognized) or if they are recognized don't work reliably. Another problem, depending on ho old your Mac Mini is, the newer machines have USB 3.0 ports and that poses another hurdle.
Here's two things to try for the Acorn.
Turn the computer off, unplug the Acorn's USB cable. Restart the MacMini and let it settle for a couple of minutes, open Audio-MIDI Setup... plug the Acorn in, see if there's and life.
Try a powered USB 2.0 USB Hub, a hub that has it's own power supply. If you don't have one maybe you can borrow one as it's only a -possible- solution.
The Problem with the M! and Digi002 may be related. Are you using the very latest drivers available for the 002? Again, this may be a MIDI compatibility problem, although I thought this was USB only, I suspect it's more of a Digi002 driver issue with Mavericks than anything else.
MIDI Out on the M1 to MIDI IN on the 002
Delete the Logic 9 preferences file and control surfaces file.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the  com.apple.logic.pro.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro User Manual for details on how to do this.
If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro. then delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
Be sure to include the Tilde~ in the path name above, be sure and delete both files.

  • Less oppertunities for compressors in Logic Express  compared to Logic Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm running on L-Express also. I had a conversation with a guy this afternoon who is running Protools.
We've tried to put some compressors on my created track. In protools he could let a compressor follow the beat of the bass drum and put that effect on, for instance, the hi hat so that you could create a nice pumping sound. We've tried to look for it in Logic Express but unfortunatly we couln't find it.
Is this also a difference between Logic Express and Logic Pro?
    grtz,
    Lewis

    Hey Lewis,
I believe you must be talking about a multi band compressor, that you can use High or low pass filters, the one in logic Le isn't, you just have one in AU from the system.
Logic Pro has multi band compressor and then some!
Anyway, Logic Le compressor has some presets that can help you click on arrow tool (in the compressor) and you have presets for Vocal, Instruments,Drums ie: Kick drum - Double punch.
    Give it a go.
    cheers,
    Jorge

  • Help please: I edited an 8 min song in Garage Band to 2 min but iMovie sees it still as 8 min????

I have a new MacBook Pro with Garage Band '11 and iMovie '11 that came with it.
I edited an 8 minute song into 2 minutes to use in iMovie BUT iMovie isn't reading the newer version of the song; it reads the original.  I tried renaming the file, remixing the song, and still iMovie plays it as the original 8 minute song.  In fact, four renamed versions of the song show up in iMovie under Garage Band and yet they are all the same.
Oh, I also made sure the little purple line was right at the end of my 2 minute sound track and not left where the original song was before I started cutting it.  Still, the same problem.
What am I doing wrong?  Any insights would be most helpful!  It's been about two years since I've used Garage Band - and even then I only used it about ten times -  so treat me like the rookie that I am, ok?
Thanking the Apple Support world-at-large in advance,
    GG

Anyway, Leonie, you did give me one little jeweled piece of information that confirmed what I vaguely remembered from the last time I was putting together videos - once the file is in iMovie, any changes I make outside of iMovie need to be imported back in once again.  That's why I instinctively kept renaming the files.  Thank you for that.... each little piece of info helps, no?
That is on of the irritating aspects of iLife application integration - one would expect, that changes do sync, but they don't.
I'm using version 10.01 andyou two are using the previous generation.
Actually, I am using both versions. I assumed from your first post, that you would be using iMovie '11, version 9.0.9 and not the current version 10.0 - you wrote:
Garage Band '11 and iMovie '11
The version numbering is not the best effort on Apple's part.
But you are right - version 10.0 is not yet as robust as iMovie '11 has been. For serious work I am still mainly using  iMovie '11; I am more or less only paying around with the new version 10.0 to explore it. Final Cut has not yet given me any trouble, but I only use it for effects that are not available in iMovie '11.
    Regards

  • Delays w garage band live with external USB mike

I'm using  an external USB mike into a Macbook pro with garage band running as recommended with monitor on. (Mac's earphone port  cabled to input of a Marley  "Get together") After  anywhere between 7-15 minutes a delay occurs. When initially investigating this set-up, I did notice someone dealing with such delays. Could someone please put me to rights? Bern

It will be a little clearer. Play around with the mic position to see if you can minimize the background sound. I believe the six "ticks" you heard were the count-in. You can turn that off via the Control menu.

  • Why is new version of garage band distorting my old tracks

I have updated my MacBook Pro to Garage Band 10.0.  Now I'm trying to upload my songs created in the older version.  When I playback my older songs many of these are now coming out all distorted with what sounds like electrical interference and it isn't coming from any particular track.   None of my newly created recordings are a problem.  Any ideas why this may be happening?

Have you checked, if any effects have been added to the Master Track?
Select "Show Master Track" from the Tracks menu, show the Smart Controls, select the Master Track.
Click the button to check for added audio unit. Check the Smart control Output area for effects, like "Compressor", that might distort the signal.
    Also check the Preference setting.
You may want to toggle "Auto Normalize" in the "Advanced" preferences  on and off, and also experiment with the "Global Echo and reverb" setting in the "Audio" preferences.
