Logic Pro 9 Certification Level 1.
I have read the certified training book by David Nahmani probably 3 times now. I have taken the test exam on proprof.com in preparation for the real exam. I have failed this thing 3 times in a row. I keep getting caught up on the small technical questions - option menu this or preference menu that, all the hard facts I know. Has anyone taken the real exam? What one may expect? I am sort of dyslexic so the wording of some questions trips me out. Any advice would be great.... thanks in advance.
They have released loads of apps made using appomator already. type in appomator in iTunes store to see them. Looks good. Some are free
Yep I've downloaded them…They're good, they will be easier to follow/view on the iPad.
Saw a little to whet my appetite.
If I watch more i am going to get hooked and go and buy Melodyne.
Haha!
It's a good tutorial. Do you use Melodyne?
Yes I do,not very much though.I want to buy the new version(DNA) but I have other App and hardware priorities at the mo :)So it'll have to wait….
Would like to check the Film/Scoring 203 when they upload previews etc.
I'm looking forward to checking it out. This subscription I have is tuning into a really good thing. Learning lots about stuff I wouldn't normally look at getting. I heard they have a new advanced Kontakt one in the works too. Can't wait!
JG
Yep ,I might get Kontakt advanced and Film/Scoring 203 when [this|http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/logic304] is out Amazing!

I passed the certification exam about three months ago, but have not yet received a certificate.
I noticed my name is listed on the certified pro search.
Do we actually get a certificate?
How long does it usually take?
Thanks in advance.

Volume levels in logic pro X keep jumping up to 5.2 and 5.0 by itself. There are no plugins nor automation activated on tracks? how can i stop the track levels from jumping?
What do i do to avoid this?I and the same problem and neither of these fixes solved it. Defintely not a controller problem as guessed.
The problem was solved by going to the step editor - similar to automation - but more hidden, and also taking place in the track at a point that I had trimmed out that heppened before the beginning of the composition.
I solved the problem by going into the step editor of the track and deleting the bar in the volume track that kept setting it, and not showing up as an automation curve.
I found this problem infuriating ,I really hope this solution helps. -
Analog Levels vs SPDIF Levels Input and Output in Logic Pro
Hello,
I ran a test last night for recording input and output levels from my Yamaha Motif XS8 through an Apogee Ensemble to compare Analog to SPDIF
I connected two TRS cables from the L and R outputs on the Motif XS into the Analog Inputs on the Apogee and also have the SPDIF connection from the Motif to the Apogee.
I put the master fader all the way up on the XS for the volume for analog.
The ensemble in Maestro has a +4 and -10 reference notional level option for analog inputs. i had it at +4 but changed to -10 and the analog got louder (i figured it would get louder for +10, confusing).
anyways, why is it that I can record louder levels for analog than the digital transfer?
I tracked both options at the same time then recorded vocals over it. the digital sound is too low. what's up with that?
and when I tried to bounce the recording to listen to it in ITunes, the volume levels were way lower than my cd playing through iTunes. Please enligthen me on these?
I use to record in a Roland 2480, and had similar results with loudness, but got a little louder through mastering but still....pro cds are way louder and still clear.I think there is much confusion here!
In summary, you wont be able to control the recording level of S/PDIF.
The reason is that you don't want to!
You need to think of the SPDIF connection as being more like a file transfer method. You are copying the digital data at an output to your harddrive in effect. If I send you an MP3 via email you'd never imagine that your email software is capable of changing the gain of the MP3 I send you. This might sound daft but its a useful analogy. If you need to increase the "volume" of that MP3 then you'd need to ask the sender. Its the same with your set-up.
There could well be somewhere on your synth that adjusts the instruments level, other than the master (analogue) output control. For example, make sure the midi volume of the intrument being played is set to full - ie midi vol 128. Perhaps there is somesort of virtual mixer onboard to control all the muti-timbral parts so make sure your part has its virtual fader turned up.
This is what (basically) is going on in the chain...
Your synth creates sound in its "digital brain". This sound is sent to an "output stage" which will distribute the sound to various outputs. In the case of the S/PDIF it will just send the raw digital data untouched. For the analogue side the digital signal (same as the one sent to S/PDIF) will be converted to analogue and then sent to a amplifier to get it to an appropriate "line level". This final level could well be controlled by an anogue volume control which could be adding more gain (than you think) too.
When things go to your sound card/ daw...
The purpose of a analogue gain control is to set the i/p signal so that it suitably loud to beat any noise that exists in your input circuits - so that a good signal to noise ratio is achieved. Analogue signals need to work in the right loudness zone (so to speak) as the analogue electronics will be designed to handle signal levels of a particular range. the gain control is there to make sure the signal is in that range.
Digital signals are far more predictable though and there is no advantage to your recordings if the incoming digital signal gets an increase of level at the input stage. All you are doing here is effectively adding a few zeros to the binary digital data!
Lets face it the point of recording is to get a copy of the original sound, that is as similar to the original as possible. With S/PDIF you get a perfect copy of what's coming out of your synth - so job's a good un!
If, when you come to mix in logic, you find the level of the digital recording is indeed too low for mixing/mastering purposes then just boost it in logic via a fader or via the gain plugin.
Those referrence values of -10dBV and +4dBu refer to analogue voltage levels only. they have nothing to do with the digital domain. The -10/+4 switch will be only relevant to analogue inputs and outputs. Using an analogue VU meter you should find that a sine wave that peaks at 0dBVU (totally different to 0dBFS BTW) is the equivant of a digital sine wave peaking at -18dBFS.
The analogue headroom (how loud you can go before things distort) depends on the analogue electronics and varies with different design. Analogue stuff, like mixers) often has headroom of 24dB or more. So that digital stuff can interface with analogue properly we allow for that analogue headroom to be around 18dB (usually enough in practise!)... hence -18dBFS(digital)=0dBVU(analogue).
To make your digital and analogue input signals sound similar in level you will probably have to reduce the gain of the analogue input. If you set the incoming analogue signal to peak around -14dB (or less!) or so you will probably find things more equal. If you are working in 24 bit your analogue levels can be seemingly very low before sound quality is affected. Its quite safe to record at -20 or even -30dB as shown on logic's meters for eg.
I hope all this waffle helps LOL! -
When I press play within the project, the playhead doesn't move from left to right with the audio like it should. As well as within the mix window, the audio levels are not displayed. However, when I click and hold within the arrange window, everything is fine and working properly, but I'm not going to be holding down the mouse the whole time I'm working on a project.
Does anybody have any sort of advice for me at all?
Also, if I were to buy Logic Pro X, would all of my projects currently running in Logic Pro 9 be able to open up in Logic Pro X? I also have the Waves Mercury Bundle, Vangard and Antares Auto-Tune, would all of those work with Logic Pro X?When I press play within the project, the playhead doesn't move from left to right with the audio like it should. In logic pro, where do you find the knobs for the guitar amps like the treble, gain, mids, drive, level? In garageband there're knobs for the amp & effects & pedals but in logic pro 9 all are just presets?
Thanks for any help. From one old hippie to another..

Stop comparing the two it's annoying!
There, I feel better! -
I am wondering if the standard entry level iMac is good enough to learn Logic Pro. From what I have researched the top of the line 2012 Mac mini is more power full than the entry level 2013 iMac and I would end up paying more for the iMac. But I am also thinking about how the new 2013 iMac has the new haswell processor which is supposedly better than the ivy bridge on the 2012 Mac mini (I do not really know about any of this I am just going off of what I have been researching) so the 2012 Mac mini may be more powerful than the 2013 entry level iMac technically but maybe the iMac will run more efficiently because from what I hear it does not get as hot and uses less power or something. Also, should I wait for the Mac mini to come out with a refresh with the has well processor or will I be fine with the current 2012 Mac mini with the ivy bridge processor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. P.S. Does anyone know exactly just how much better if at all the haswell is than the ivy bridge because if it is not that big of an improvement I would just get the current top of the line 2012 Mac mini, as I really would like to get started on learning Logic Pro.
The latest top of the line Mac Mini is much more powerful than the latest bottom of the line iMac..
It is much easier to add your own memory to a Mac Mini than an iMac... and much cheaper!
More memory = better performance
Mac Mini 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 + 4GB RAM = $799
Add 16 GB RAM from Amazon for $160
Total = $959 -
Interested in opinions in Logic Pro 9 training. I am currently working through Macprovideo tutorial- quite good actually. But want more to be proficient and fun tonal on a pro level. Have run across pyramind.com course for $500 that will help you get the basic certification. Does anyone have any experience in this endeavor?
I am more interested in the training than the certification, but is the certification worth anything as a credential?Keep up the Macprovideo stuff, Groove3 also do good training.
+1 with Dubspot.
To be honest, the pyramid course looks basic and you could get all this training and more from the first 2 suggestions. And save $$$
Just keep making songs, thats honestly the best way to learn. If you find it difficult writing material then do a cover version. Just don't watch endless videos without making some actual music.
As for certification, it all depends on the job you are after. But most guys I know in the industry built a reputation by producing tracks or recording other artists.
You can never beat experience and thats why making song after song after song is the best advice.
Good luck! -
Sticky proposal: Logic Pro (first draft)
Ok, here's a first draft of the proposed sticky for this forum. After looking at what we had, I decided to basically do it in four parts - introductory stuff (please post version numbers etc), problem solvers, tips, and audio general stuff.
I'm not making this a work of art, but value feedback in order to make this useful before we ask the mods for a sticky. It's not complete, such a task is a much bigger job, but it's a start. What's not there? What's confusing? Is it too much stuff? Too newbie unfriendly?
When we are happy I will probably style/format it a little better as well.
Lemme know - cheers,

- Getting the best help from the Apple Logic Pro Discussions
This forum is intended to be a user-to-user support form to users of Logic Pro.
Please keep your posts on the topic of Logic Pro, or you risk your post being removed for being off-topic. There are plenty of other general audio and recording forums better suited for asking general audio questions.
Questions about third-party software and hardware are welcome as long as they relate directly to using these products in conjunction with Logic.
This forum is dedicated to the post-Apple versions of Logic, which means questions for Logic Pro 7, Logic Pro 8, and Logic Pro 9 are welcome. However, please include the version of Logic you are using, in order to give useful advice (as things change between versions.) Better still, put your Logic versions and system information in your signature, to save having to ask for it.
If you are a user of Logic Express, you should post in the Logic Express forum, rather than the Logic Pro forum, in order to get advice suited to your particular software version (as some things are different between Logic Express and Logic Pro).
Remember that many questions, especially if you are new to Logic, have been asked multiple times before, so it's good practice to use the Discussions Search feature in the top right of the page to search for previous discussions relating to your issue. You will find a wealth of information. Often you can find a solution to your question without needing to post and have someone type out a response they've already typed out hundreds of times before - or worse yet, have your question ignored.
Please be respectful of the members on the board at all times - we are happy to help people out, but do so in our own free time and don't have a duty to do so.
Posts discussing non-Logic related items, off-topic or controversial subjects, abusive posts and harsh language are not welcome and will likely be removed, as will posts discussing illegal software. Please read the Terms of Use of this board for more info at:

Okay, here I marked some of the links because at the time it was not clear if they adress things that are still actual in L9.
It may be a good idea to name the topics that apply to all Logics' (7, 8 and 9) simply Logic Pro (or leave 'm nameless), and the others after the specific version they apply to. The topics with a (9?) behind it, have still to be confirmed to also apply to L9 (.0.2)

Can I use Logic Pro 9.1.6 on two computers with one licens
I have download and install Logic Pro 9.1.6 on my MacBookPro 13". I record on location with my MacBook an wil edit and arrange the music on my iMac at home. Can I use Logic Pro 9.1.6 on two computers with one licens. I'm the owner of both computers. If it can where can I find the program on my MacBook? and how to install and register?
Hi, is the iMac also 10.6.8? I had an iMac die when 10.6.8 was installed, it worked at first but after some You Tube flash videos the screen just locked and no mouse clicking anywhere did anything. It turned out that most older iMacs [ mine was from august 2007] have a graghics chipset that can't handle Snow Leopard, there were [are?] 77 pages on this "locked screen"topic in the Snow Leopard forum. I checked out a web site that tells you how much your mac is worth by filling in the sereal number-mine was worth only $168, I may give it to a friend for his children to play with, although that seems unholy. I doubt anyone woud buy it,the problem is now so well known that even Apple certified resellars here in the Netherlands refuse to repair them, they claim Apple will revoke their certification if they replace the faulty Graphics unit,it is also VERY hard to get to that unit in an iMac, everything is so tightly packed inside.
If your iMac is running Mountain Lion[10.8.0] you may have to change the app store preference to accept apps from all sites, normally ML will only allow app store apps to be downloaded. -
Logic pro 9.1.7 does not show note velocity data with velocity tool
Anyone have an issue with files not showing note velocity and duration data with velocity tool in the piano roll in Logic 9.1.7? It only show the note and the velocity change (+1 or -1 for instance). I have to use Logic 9.1.5 because of that.

I realize this could be a host of issues other than Logic Pro 9, such as Audio Midi Setup (which often doesn't recognize my Mbox2 Pro). But again, thought I'd start here.
If Audio MIDI Setup cannot see/recognise the MBox, then Logic will be unable to see it. Audio MIDI Setup is at OS level: if your MBox does not show up it is likely to be:
Driver issues (highly likely)
Cable Issues
FW socket issues: hardware fault.

Logic Pro no longer works with Firewire 1814 after updating drivers
I was attempting to hook up 2 M-Audio Firewire 1814 units and use them from Logic Pro 7. The older driver I was using would actually crash with this configuration, and so I updated to the latest driver, thinking this might solve the problem.
Well, the M-Audio driver now comes up fine - I can even monitor the signal levels coming from both devices in the associated UI. However, when I launch Logic Pro, I get the following message:
"Logic Pro has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers."
Although I can arm some of the lower track numbers (I still get this message), I cannot do so with higher track numbers.
Effectively, installing the latest M-Audio driver has broken my version of Logic Pro for whatever reason.
Removing and reinstalling the driver made no difference.
Any thoughts, anyone??

Logic Pro 7 Mix Bus -- Mixing in Logic Pro 7.0 -- Something is wrong
Ok, Maybe its just me, or my crappy audio interface, or both. anyways, heres my issue.
Heres the scenario,
I have approx 30 tracks, a handful of exs's, eq's on most channels, everything is fine, the track is sounding great and i cant complain. I have done many mixes with a modest amount of tracks 30-60 tracks and they sound great.....
however,
I am working on this one song that is pushing close to 100 tracks. the mac is holding up nicely, however.... there are parts in the song where i have many elements playing simultaneously. The recordings sound good when solo'd. nice level, minimal eq, very light compression if needed.
when i let all the tracks play together, my mix sounds like crap.....it sounds so smashed, colorless, lifeless, kinda dead sounding. as if it had no depth.
I have never had this problem before. I have mixed lots of music in logic pro 7.
I feel as if all the calculated numbers in the mix bus are not adding up correctly.
MY AUDIO INTERFACE...
Digi Mbox2
yes i know, IMHO its a POS
I am forced to have it because there are still some PT sessions that i need access to,
I want an Apogee Ensemble
anyways
has anyone ever had a mixbus issue?
am i gonna have to take this project to an PTHD room?
or perhaps a good analog mixroom?
there have been quite a few mixes that i have done on this system that went straight to the mastering lab and then published...
this track is kickin me in my a$$
Thanks

G5quad 10GBram 2x250GBHDD Mac OS X (10.4.8) mbox2, BigKnob, Gen1031a, NS10sjord, hi, yes i used to use them heaps, but the arrangements and track count were smaller as well.
unfortunately, when you have to sub grp many more sections for an orchestra as well i noticed a degradation in sound from them to the summing buss.
i checked all the ADC settings and so on.
so i reverted to trk > stereo sum.
i use groups to control sub levels.
i sort of liken this to the similar use on an analog console.
when trkg, we'd use the monitor mixer and the main chnl strps would be used for mix down.
to me, it was quite noticable that the quality changed/dropped when the main chnl strps were used. one or two were ok, but 40 became too colored.
the monitor mixer was less complex with less circuitry. cleaner.
this is where i stopped using eq a lot, mid 70s, and now i focus on well recorded sounds first.
anyway, i sure this wouldn't worry most people. -
In logic Pro, when I open up an audio track or software track and load an audio file/loop or software file loop, there is no sound. I will finally get a sound out of one of the audio or software tracks after opening at least 5 of them alternately. Is anyone familiar with this kind of bug? It's really frustrating as this takes much time to complete work.
os x, Mac OS X (10.6)I'm not sure I follow your words Fuzzynormal. You've helped by offering the insight that my issue in Logic Pro 9 is not a bug but a feature. But fell short of enlightenment by being a judge of character and of how one should interact in this forum. You insinuate that I haven't tried to solve the issue on my own when in fact I have. These forums are always my last resort. You further suggest that I am complaining. This is not a complaint. It is a genuine issue that I cannot figure out. Then you think that Brazeca is holding my hand and being a nice guy. Brazeca is helping people like me who might not be as adept at using Logic Pro as probably you are. This community forum was established to raise questions, answers and dicussion to help Apple's customers better undertand their operating systems and related issues. You are doing a disservice by not contributing positively and by trying to make this forum what you want it to be. You may have all the time in the world to try figuring out stuff but we are not all like you. We all have different schedules and different levels of understanding. And that is what this forum is for - to help people move forward. If you can't contribute positively then keep silent. And by the way, you say to "read the words that are printed down to explain to you how that works" what words are you talking about? Why don't you be of some help instead of trying to own this forum.

I'm struggling to install Logic Pro 9 upgrade on Mountain Lion
Way back we bought one of the last pre-Intel G5 in order to do music processing. We also bought Logic Studio v6 or 7. Then we upgraded to Logic Studio 8 and later decided to use a macbook pro instead of the G5. So far so good. We then upgraded to Logic Pro 9 and can run this on Lion on the Macbook Pro.
My partner is now working away and takes his Macbook with him, so we want to set-up Logic 9 on my macbook pro which is running Mountain Lion 10.8.4. Once this is done we will take it off his machine, so not pirating in any way.
I have managed (at great length) to install Logic Studio 8 on my machine using Pacifist, and I can open it and create projects etc... I now want to install Logic Pro 9 on this machine but I get a message saying that a qualifying copy of Logic or MainStage was not found on the disk. To complicate matters, we can't find either the logic pro 9 disk or an image copy, so I downloaded from the following link:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2972851/logic-downloads-fixed.html
which I found in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4948612
I have already spent many many hours fiddling with this, does anyone know how I can get around this problem?Im using LPX and have found it to work well.... and no less stable than LP9 in terms of general stability. There are some bugs but given we are still in the early stages of development, that is not surprising and is no different to how it was with LP8 and 9 in their early days. I should add I haven't come across any "showstopper" bugs that affect my own personalo workflow and method of using Logic... just a few niggles and minor annoyances... that for the most part can be worked around if they haven't already been fixed in the 3 updates that have come out since initial release.
I have had no real issues with importing LP9 projects into LPX other than of course, the lack of 32bit Plugin support in LPX which means LP9 projects that contain 32bit plugins.. will not fully import into LPX. The midi/audio data imports ok.. the 32bit plugins will be missing however... if you don't have equivilant 64bit versions installed. For me, this issue has been very minimal simply because almsot all the plugins i use, have already been updated to 64bit versions over the last few years.
There has also been an issue with certain parameters in the track/region Inspector after import into LPX, containing weird values.. I have only had this issue once out of maybe 40+ LP9 Projects and in this one case i simply reset the values and all was well. Other users have reported different levels of how often this occurs.
Note: Once a project has been opened and then resaved in LPX the LPX version cannot be opened in LP9 as project compatibility is only backwards and not forwards.
If you cannot find your disk and serial..(which you will also need) Contact Apple as they may be able to provide you with replacements disks if they have any left. Bear in mind if, as it appears, your LP9 is an upgrade from LP8 you will also need your previous LP8 serial as well as your upgrade LP9 serial to properly install Logic on a new Mac. Once installed you can and in fact must... then update LP9 to 9.1.8 via software updates in LIon or Mountain LIon... for Logic to under those OS versions.
