Logic Pro Based recording studio

Hi all, I am intending on building a smallish recording studio around Logic Pro - I need your experience and expertise!
My imagined setup is based on a hefty Mac Pro, using Apogee Symphony Cards as Audio inputs. I considered using Motu or M-Audio..any thoughts?
My big Questions:
1. Mixing Desk/Control Surface
Firstly do I need a separate Mixing desk? or will a digital control surface do? Can all the audio go straight to the Mac through the interface? or does it need to go through a desk for monitoring etc?
2. Control Surface
I would very much like to find a decent control surface of the digidesign C24/C20 style, but I don't seem to be able to find anything with more than 8 channel strips that says its compatible with Logic Pro - these all seem targeted at the prosumer/home user category of artist - Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help all,
Ed

No software program is truly bug-free. The issue with Logic and the most current OS (10.5.2) is that these bugs are not being addressed... at all. Logic 8 has been around for 8 months or so and so far there have been no major updates to improve stability, core audio issues on the OS, etc.
Basically Logic is $500 because there is no support - you're buying only software.
Avid, Ableton, Cakewalk and the like are primarily software companies and they thrive on constantly updating their apps. Apple Inc, is not a software company. So you proceed at your own risk when it comes to Apple "solutions".
And keep in mind there is no such thing as a "solution"! Only tools, craftsmanship and love of music.
Your other question I believe about an external mixer, there are two simple descriptions: ITB & OTB.
In the box & Out of the box, respectively. Of course these two worlds overlap and arguably, one is not better than the other. I'd suggest looking for those terms on other forums. Tapeop.com, gearslutz.com, soundonsound.com, there are hundreds, I'm sure.
One last thing and it's a bit of a gripe: But Apple has also taken the liberty to arbitrarily remove certain features and/or consolidate features that were special components to Emagic's program... many of these features will be missed, ie, syncing Logic to an external MIDI clock. R.I.P. external MIDI clock...
Have fun.

  • Any ideas on how to control the amount of sustain pedal data that Logic Pro 9 records? Every time I press the sustain pedal down, it records 4 sustains. Same thing when I release the pedal. Thanks!

This gets confusing, you have two Macs with different issues and two pedals with different issues? First let's sort out what's what. So, do the issues come from the pedals or from the Mac software? To find out, simply switch the pedals and note their behaviour. No change: it's the software, change: it's the pedals (imho the most likely scenario).
Second, what kind of pedals are they? Can you name the type of pedal too? The Yamaha what and the Mgear which?
Third, with the 4 fold data problem, are the doubled events simultaneous, or a few ticks apart, or more?
Also, you have no MIDI keyboard? Are the pedals both "standalone"?
I think you have to sort this problem at its' source, which are the pedals. You could, if push really comes to shove, perhaps create some sort of ingeneous/elaborate transformer setup in the environment to filter the extra messages, although with the 4/4 sustain events that may not even be possible. With the "stepped" events you could set up a filter to just block all events with values 20-110 or so.
But much better would be to configure the pedal(s) correctly.

  • Logic Pro 9 - Recorded audio just silly with crackling, clicking noise

PLEASE!!! Read my entire post before commenting. I don't mean to sound rude but I've posted this in several other forums and it's obvious they hadn't read/understood my issue based on the comments they left, ie., suggesting everything I've already tried, saying to contact tech support and even asking what comp and DAW I'm using... I've been dealing with this issue for ~8 months
    SPECS
    I use 2 daisy-chained Firepods connected to a Mac Pro Quad-core running 10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3.
I get the results described below whether I'm trying to record at 24 or 16 bit and at either 44.1K or 48K.
Generally I record 12 tracks simultaneously AND I always use the same inputs for each instrument; ie., Vocals = track 11, guitar = track 2, bass = track 1, etc...*
    PROBLEM
Although this is a sporadic issue it happens to occur WAY more than it doesn't; ie., very rarely do I get a recording session without the anomaly.
The issue is that after I have recorded a session and listen back to the recorded material there are random crackles, pops, clicks throughout. When I audition tracks individually, some may have no crackling and some will have crackling at different points in time and of varying intensity. Every session is different as well, no two sessions are the same. One day I may have a perfect vocal track and a guitar track that is just silly with the crackling. The next day the guitar track may be fine but now the vocal track is all messed up with crackling. Another confounding point is that the crackling does not occur during periods of silence.
I will add that each Firepod appears to function properly (with no issue) all by it's lonesome - but that doesn't help me, I need 12 inputs minimum!
    Things I've Tried
    1. All new FW cables
    2. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Launch Logic.
    3. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Launch Logic. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac.
    4. Tried every conceivable configuration of Audio Midi Setup.
    5. Tried several other FW and USB audio interfaces, obtaining perfect results.
    6. Been working with Apple tech support (both hardware and Logic support).
    7. I've checked that both Firepods have the same firmware version.
    8. Installed a fresh SATA HD with clean installs of both OS10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3 with fresh custom templates and no 3rd party plugins or loops.
    9. Lots of praying, swearing and fits of anger.
    Final Comments
First, I think that the chassis FW connectors on the firepods are absolute garbage (read, cheap, cheap, cheap) and are inferior to anything else I have encountered during my troubleshooting process.
Last, I will go ballistic if I hear one more Presonus rep say anything to the effect of, "Huh! Never heard of anyone else experiencing the symptoms you're describing..." Yes, I have spoken adnauseum with Presonus tech support with zero results.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pancenter! I'll try to be brief. LOL
I had 4 perfect multi-track sessions and then the gremlin woke up and and cast his spell... Frustrating... The biggest difference I enjoyed using your suggestion was that when I launched Logic, loaded my template, enabled my tracks and hit record, the session started without a hitch. Prior to your suggestion, I would have to futz around with Logic audio prefs, AMS settings, turning the Firepods off/on, quitting/restarting Logic and/or shutting down/restarting my Mac Pro just to get the session to show my enabled tracks had activity. I would not know if the session would have the noise artifacts until playback. I should add that I never had this problem with my PPC G5 nor did I for the first 10 months of use with this Mac Pro. Also, with the help of Apple tech support we had eliminated Logic, 10.6.5 and the Mac Pro (except the FW800 bus) as probable causes. Again each Firepod and Logic work flawlessly when I use one unit not daisy-chained. So, I think there is no problem with the individual units, and, as I said, both units worked fine chained with my PPC Mac Pro.
So, I called Presonus. Again... And I get yet another tech who tells me something different; every time I speak with Presonus I get different suggestions. This guy asked what kind of cable I was using to connect the Firepods to the Mac Pro and I said I'm using a *firewire 9-pin to 6-pin cable*. So has asks well, is it *bilingual*? He said that would def fix my problem. I told him it is advertized as bilingual and that had not fixed the problem; he had no answer for that. Then, I broached the option of adding a firewire 400 card to my Mac Pro. He said I guess you could try that; get one with a TI chipset. That's where I'm at now, deciding which one to get and whether I will need to provide auxiliary power to the card's on-board molex plug.
    Any ideas?
    Oh, thanks for responding

  • MBP as centerpiece of Logic Pro 7 home studio?

    Hello All.
I am VERY close to placing an order for my first Mac and right now its neck and neck between the MacBook Pro and the 20-inch Intel iMac.
My main purpose for the Mac is to be a dedicated computer for serious hobbyist music creation with Logic Pro 7, Garageband & various plugins, web surfing, management of an iTunes Library over 12000 songs and occasional iLife usage. I currently use Cubase, Reason and various VST's on my PC. My songs consist mainly of sofwtare instruments, a few breakbeat loops or beats that I create myself. Eventually, I will add those programs and VST's to the Mac when the universal binary versions of them come out.
I've been debating this for weeks now and I'm seriously torn between the MBP and the IMac; both have their good and bad points. For the MBP, I love the idea of portability and not being stuck at a desk when I'm working on my tracks. This would be especially handy when my wife starts bugging me to use the Dell PC that currently sits on said desk or when my 20-month son gets too rowdy and chases me out of the room. I don't travel much nor do any professional recording or touring, but I must admit the ability to even just play around or surf the web from another room in the house is appealing which is why I'm considering it.
On the other hand, I'm definately not rich and I'd be paying a serious premium for that portability. Plus when you add laptop accessories, the price gets up there rather quick. Alternatively, I could get an Intel iMac with the same configuration, Logic Pro 7 and the 7.2 Crossgrade for about the same price of the MBP and accessories WITHOUT Logic Pro 7. Furthermore, I've gotten used to the 21" CRT we use for our Dell PC and I'm wondering if the 15.4" screen of the MBP would wear on me after awhile. I could get the iMac with all the same specs with that big beautiful display, but it would obviously take up more space and I'll lose the portability.
    1) Anyway, have any of you ever used a laptop (like the PowerBook G4, for example) as the centerpiece of your home studio? How did that work out? Is that something that you'd recommend or would I be better off with an iMac desktop?
    2) Also, should I be concerned with the heat that laptops like the MBP and PowerBowk put out? I was gonna have the 100GB 7200RPM drive installed in the MBP so I wonder if drive noise could be a factor here as well?
    3) Lastly and on a side note, regardless of whether or not I get the MBP or the iMac, I'd be using my Edirol PCR-50 MIDI USB Keyboard Controller to control the software instruments and plug-ins. If I simply plugged this into the computer via USB, would I experience any latency issues with Core Audio/Core MIDI of OS X? Or is a MIDI absolutely necessary? Does OS X allow you change the latency settings?
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hello
    i used to have a Soundcraft 24/8/2 mixboard, a MPC 2000XL, an EMU e6400, a MicroModular, a Nord Lead, three DBX266XL compressors, a TC M-One, a Lexicon MPX100, a Sherman Filterbank ...
i've sold everything except the nordlead and bought a powerbook G4 1.5 ghz with Logic Express 7.
i've never been as productive as now. I used to be forced to compose in front of the same stupid wall. now i can make music anywhere. i bought some good headphones, plug them directly to the powerbook soundcard and make music most of the time on the sofa next to my girlfriend while she watches tv.
i have a super small usb midi keyboard (m-audio o2) which i plug when i need to enter notes. sometimes i even enter notes using the CapsLock keyboard integrated in logic so i don't even need my usb keyboard.
when i've finished my track i go to my office and plug my firewire soundcard (Echo Audiofire 8, lots of inputs / outputs, useful to plug guitar / bass / mic and eventually a friend's computer) and check the mix on my monitors.
i'll never go back to a desktop computer again. i'm not a pro working for any kind of business, i'm just a musician making my demo. my mixes sounds as good as or better than when i had all this audio hardware.
i have two sessions in os X, one internet, one audio. i surf the web heavily, no virus, no ********. sometimes i even load safari while boucing a track in logic, professionals will tell you it's baaaaaaad, i don't care.
    so :
    1) i recommend having a laptop and good headphones (100$ minimum) if you're just making music for pleasure. pro need big G5, we don't.
    2) i don't have problem with heat. when it's on my thigs it can get very hot which is not recommended. you must let the heat get out.but i didn't have any problem
    3) no midi latency problem at all, wether it is pure midi or usb.
Lastly : i think the MacBook Pro is too expensive. a powerbook G4 is too old for big sessions. wait for the MacBook (the iBook successor), which is supposed to be intel 1.67 ghz solo core 13"3 inch screen, a little more than 1000$, and may be released on April 1st (apple aniversary)
i'm currently waiting for my copy of Logic Pro 7.2 to arrive, and i'll get a MacBook as soon its released
(be careful there are near to 0 plugins out on intel macs yet be sure you will only use logic plugins)
    cheers

  • Logic Pro X - Record in time - Logic moves audio automatically out of time

I have a mac book pro
    OSX Version 10.8.4
2.3 Ghz intel core i5 processor
    8 GB memory 1333 MHz DDR3
Latest version of Logic Pro x
When I record an audio track using the mac book pros built in microphone, I sing or play an acoustic part in time (yes in time, I'm not dodgy time-wise!)
But when I play back the audio, Logic has shifted the audio file to be out of time by some way, from the click
    - it also does this when I connect up my mbox 2
    any ideas anyone?

Sounds like you are not monitoring through your soundcard or logic and the latency of your audiobox/soundcard is placing the recording too late. Try to reduce the buffer to 256 or 128 in your mbox mix display, and use software monitoring if you can.

  • Logic Pro when recording audio and midi takes, the regions sometimes become confused. The midi tracks line up with audio tracks.

When recording midi and audio tracks simutaneously the midi tracks don't always line up with the software instrument channel. They may show up on the audio track. Sometimes they appear white instead of the normal green. Any suggestions?

  • Logic pro 9,record ready has gone for audio tracks, can't record now.

I upgraded from Logic 8 to logic pro 9 back in october, everything was fine no probs.I have come back to record after a month away & now there is no record ready for audio tracks on any page, they're there for instruments & midi tracks. All else seems fine - just can't record! Also is there any way of getting help from apple, can't see anywhere to contact them without paying!! can anyone help with this?,tis the season of frustration....

You have to select an Input device in the Audio preferences. Since Logic 9 you can assign different devices for In- and Output. So make a selection there and everything will be fine.

  • Is there a plug-in for Logic Pro that records all live output to disk?

Hi, I noticed Digidesign have a plug in called Flashback which literally records up to 15 minutes of the master audio output for all those 'happy accidents' or when you miss recording a genius solo because it was just a run-through. Is there anything like this for Logic? thanks, Chris

right click on transport bar, select "Customize Transport Bar ...", select "Capture Recording" checkbox.
If you're in cycle mode and playing on an input enabled track, this button will capture the last time through the cycle and place it on the timeline as if you'd been recording with the little red light on. Works for audio and midi.

  • Logic pro 10 - recording a midi instrument as an audio track

In my Logic 10 song I have a midi instrument that I want to record as an audio track. I can find no way to get the signal from the output of the "harmonica" track to the input of the audio track, apart from recording it using the external speakers. It must be simple to do, but Apple help is no help. Can somebody please help?

    Use "Bounce Track in Place".

  • Logic Pro X: Recording is changing speed?

    Hi there,
So I am not new to Logic but new to Logic X.  When I recorded from my MBP 15" 2.3GHZ I-7 with 16GB of 1600DDR3 I got a recording but when playing back, my voice has now lowered like it has slowed down or something.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Pancenter wrote:
The problem has nothing to do with Logic or the projects, it has to do with the sample rate of the audio system you're using.
You folks need to read the manual so this stuff won't be a mystery.
    It's still a mystery.
My Yamaha 01v mixer is set to 44.1KHz. Its SP/DIF in/out is going to the M-Audio Audiophile USB's SP/DIF. If any digital audio goes to the mixer that is not 44.1, it will sit there and complain that the digital input is out of sync and not play a peep. All the audio clips in the project Media Browser say that they are 44.1KHz files, so why are they playing slow?
Going through Logic Audio Preferences, the M-Audio Control Panel and Preferences/Sound and I don't see an option to change the sample rate anywhere. I guess they know they are locked in.
I still have that corrupted Project and I can open both at once, click from uncorrupted to corrupted and they both play that way without ever leaving Logic. That is how I rebuilt the Project.
The key to the mystery may be that some of the bounces that I've done (i.e. the drummer track) came out 16 bit and the project audio was recorded at 24 bit in both Cubase and Logic. I cleaned out the other tracks in the uncorrupted version, but I'm sure they played nicely together at one point. The Cubase files were exported as 24bit Broadcast Wave files.
Anyway, I think it is still a mystery and I'm just glad it has stopped.
I'll try setting the system to internal audio for a while, even if it can be a pain having 2 sets of audio controls. Cubase never had an issue with it in the last 15 years.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Logic pro 8 recording glich.

I ran into a little bit of a problem last night in session. I've been a logic user since the emagic days (logic 5) and everything has worked fluidly for years until last night. All of a sudden whenever I record something there is latency in the recording. Not in the monitoring, but in the actual recording. The recorded region is about 180 to 190 milliseconds late. I'm using Motu hd 192 interfaces and have never had this problem before. If anyone has experienced this and found a solution any help would be appreciated.

just ran into this myself today, but mega-late -4073 ms to be exact....was using an onyx 1204 mixer to do overdubs and Whammy! I was confused for a good long while. Don't know why this is, but thankfully the compensation slider is there.

  • Logic pro 9, recording only six audio channels at once

    Hello,
I want to record a life gig at club and need to record 10 audio channels parallel. But whenever I try to activate more then 6 channels for recording, other channels are switched off for recording. The interface Presonus Fp10 is ok. I can't find any help in the user guides. Any idea?

If you have a 10 input audio interface check you did assign a different input to each audio channel.

  • Recording Audio For Timeline With Logic Pro In Real Time

I do commentaries on videos and was wondering if there is an easier way than what im doing now..
Right now I export my video from premiere to a bad quality version and import it into logic pro and record the commentary there.
Then I have to bounce the audio and import it back to premiere.
Is there a way to get the same plugins that are in logic pro to be used in premieres audio mixer??
A dream come true would be that I could just record directly into premiere with all of the effects coming from logic pro.
Anyone know of any kind of solution or trick or anything so I dont have to keep going back and forth and to make this easier???
Thanks for any info I really appreciate it!!

I just hate going back and forth from premiere and logic and all the extra time wasted exporting the files so they will work with eachother.
I just thought of something else.... Is there a way that I can get the video in premiere to play the same time I push record in logic pro and maybe sync with it?
Like if I push record in logic the video in premiere will start playing then when I push stop in logic pro it will stop in premiere or at least stay in sync with it so the timing will be right?
if anyone has any ideas throw some out there I would love to hear them.
    Thanks!
