Logic Pro on a MacBook Pro 17 - Will it Run Okay?

I am getting ready to purchase a new Mac so I can record piano music and then add a bunch of midi instruments. I currently have an early MacBook Pro 17 maxed out at 2 GB RAM and I am having problems with it overheating when I run Finale Notation software with instrument playback.
I have ruled out the iMac because I have heard that it can get hot and make a lot of fan noise. And it only has one Firewire port, no Express 34 port like the new MacBook Pro which allows me to have a separate firewire bus for a possible external hard drive, while the other port is used for sound input.
I would like to stick with the MacBook Pro because of its portability, but I don't want to max it out with too much demand on the CPU and have to start over again. I was planning to get it configured with the maximum of 8GB RAM and the faster CPU and hard drive.
The other option is the Mac Pro Quadcore desktop, but before going here, I wonder if anyone is using the MacBook Pro 17 successfully in some sort of music studio situation.

I have ruled out the iMac because I have heard that it can get hot and make a lot of fan noise. And it only has one Firewire port, no Express 34 port like the new MacBook Pro which allows me to have a separate firewire bus for a possible external hard drive, while the other port is used for sound input.
The noisy fan problem of imac's was at its worst with certain earlier G5 models, I'm sure it's not as big an issue now. But regarding fan noise, there is one common issue to both the iMac and MacBook Pro. Both of those machines will be right in front of you at eye-level when working, which means the actual working parts of the computer that can make noise are in between your speakers, not just a silent screen. This can be a slight nuisance under certain conditions. If you are listening softly when working, and your computer is working hard, then whatever fan noise there is will be right up there at ear level. It's not a big issue, but it's a different story with a desktop computer because you can put the box somewhat out of the way, or even totally isolate it, so noise is never a problem at all. You can do a similar thing with a laptop too, if you use it in 'closed lid mode' and put it out of the way, connected to an external monitor and bluetooth keyboard and mouse. But doing that means you obviously don't get the benefit of dual displays.
In any case, the fan noise of my MBP 17" is not a major bother for me when working. And yes they're plenty powerful enough to do most kinds of music work.

I have flattened a take folder, but Logic Pro X will still not let me use the crossfade tool on the clip.  How can I crossfade a flattened take folder?

Please repost in the Final Cut Pro forum. Have you considered upgrading your machine, if you are still running Leopard your machine may be as old as 5 years old. While this should not matter you probably won't get the performance you want out of a demanding app like FCP.

Program runs in win 7-64 Pro BUT will not run in win 7 home or vista.
I'm testing 32bit software that will run in 7-64 Pro but will not in win 7 home premium or vista.
The 7-64 Pro machine is NOT running the program in XP mode although is is being run as admin. The 7 home premium and vista beta testers have tried every work around/mode, admin mode, and anti-virus exception. I've run process explorer & WinMerge to evaluate
the differences between os operations & dlls loaded but am unable to find the OS issue.
Currently 2-win7-64 machines, 1 vista machine and 1 win 7 machine had no issues with the program as it started up and ran immediately.
After 3 beta's 30 hours of testing & 50 of my own, I believe I've narrowed the issue down to the win 7 home premium and vista os's.
Can anyone here suggest other ways to further narrow it down so as to provide functionality on all 3 os's?

  • What OSX should I use on my 2009 MAC Book Pro? Will Yosemite run

Hi I have a Mac Book Pro from 2009 and I was wondering what OSX should I use on my 2009 MAC Book Pro? Will Yosemite run properly on this computer?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac supports OS X Yosemite. If you need to upgrade your Mac, do it, but if you are happy with the OS X version you are running or you do not like changes (OS X Yosemite has got an interface change), you can keep it always that it is not very old.
In order to upgrade to OS X Yosemite, it is as simple as opening the Mac App Store and downloading OS X Yosemite. When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so follow its steps. Before upgrading, it is important to make a backup of your files with Time Machine -> Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support You can also check that your applications are compatible with Yosemite in this website -> http://www.roaringapps.com
OS X Yosemite should run properly, but I recommend you to run it with at least 4 GB of RAM (you can check how much RAM you have in the Apple menu -> About this Mac). In case Yosemite runs slowly, the backup you made will let you go back to your old version.

  • Downloaded Logic Pro and won't run

Downloaded Logic Pro and won't run. Keeps telling me couldn't open due to a problem. It says to update my software or reinstall it but it' won't let update it neither.

Bought the software in app store, installed it and it just won't run. I have OS X 10.6.8 just donwgraded from lion and safri wouldn't work either since.
The error window tells me maybe I should re install the program or update my software. I've done both, donwloaded the upgrade (Logic pro 9.1.7) and the install helper keeps telling I can't updrade my software like that. I need to chek for actualization through my computer. But the computer actualization finder "thingy" won't find more softaware to update.
This are the details shown in the error report: (I don't understand any of it)

  • MacBook Pro running Logic Pro 9 will not connect to iPad

MacBook is running Yosemite, downloaded last night. iPad is running iOS 8.1.2, updated yesterday. Logic Pro 9 version is 9.1.8. Logic Remote is version 1.1.1, also downloaded yesterday.
I've tried pairing the devices by Bluetooth as well as logging them onto 2 different WiFi networks.
Firewall on the MacBook is turned off.
I've tried deleting com.apple.logic.pro.cs and then restarting the MacBook.
Still, every single time I start Logic Remote, I get the message "No Mac running Logic, GarageBand or MainStage was found".
Is there anything else I can try or do these machines / apps simply not work together?

    Hi
Logic Remote only works with LPX? Try using TouchOSC instead

  • Logic pro 8 will not close in snow leopard

I have a quad core intel mac pro and have just installed Snow loepard, now when I run logic pro 8 I can not close it down (Logic pro 8) I have to force quit every time I finnish. Does anyone know if this can be fixed? (latest version of SL and LP8)

    Hey Karl,
    Not a problem!
Ah, I was hoping we'd finally find that there was something common that was causing this issue! I noticed that none of the AU instruments you are using are the ones I use, so it doesn't seem that this issue is related to any of those (I only use BFD2, Melodyne and Ozone)...
I am keeping my fingers crossed that now I've unticked the "backup to MobileMe" box, it will continue to allow a proper quit over the next few days! (Sometimes things seem to be fixed and then the next day the issue returns...!)
Let me know if you do get closer to a solution. I am using Logic 9, not 8, but the issue started when I moved to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 (I'm pretty sure... it was definitely some time after getting 10.6) and I believe we are having the same problem despite different versions of Logic.
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • If I learn on Logic Pro 9, will it be difficult to move to Logic Pro X?

    Hello,
I am studying Logic Pro for composition of orchestral music - I bought Logic Pro 9 about 2 months ago, as I had no idea Logic Pro X was coming out. I also purchased a couple of books to study it.
I am not complaining about the lack of upgrades, as I know Logic Pro is very cheaply priced; I just cannot afford the upgrade right now as I do not have the money.
I would like to ask you if it makes sense for me to study on Logic Pro 9 for the time being, and if it will be difficult to move to Logic Pro X once I have learnt Logic Pro 9. What was your experiencing moving to Logic Pro X?
    Thanks.

Logic Pro X has got a different user interface than Logic Pro 9, so near everything you are learning won't be useful when you upgrade to Logic Pro X.
    What!!  Do you use Logic?
I think every experienced user here will disagree withyour above statement... I've had a chance to play around with X for a bit and while there are a few differences there's nothing there to prevent a user of Logic-9 from losing his/her way in Logic X.
The Important things are almost (if not) exactly the same.
I'm a long time Logic user! (since bersion 2.x).

    MBP 10.3.7 Lion
Cannot get Logic Pro 9 to finish install from app store.  Application iinstalls but wants to download 2 Gb extras.  When download is finished Logic 9 will not open.  When i reopen Logic it restarts the already finished download.  HELP!

How is this drive formatted? What's on it? How are you opening Logic: by doubleclicking the app or by doubleclicking a project? What project was it supposed to open? have you tried starting Logic by doubleclicking a different project?

Wrong Pro Application Support version installed.  This version of Logic Pro requires Pro Application Support 5.0 (883.0) or newer.  ProKit: 722.0 (OS BUILD 9L31a)  I have tried to find Pro Application Support 5.0 as a download or update without success. I am currently on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.8  Any help here would be appreciated!

    Hi Ana,
This is it.  Once I installed, Logic opened fine.
I do have another question.  After updating Logic Studio, I now have both Logic Pro 9.0 and 9.1.4 and Logic Node 9.0 and 9.1.4  Do I need both of these on my hard drive?  Can I delete the 9.0 version?
    Thanks!

  • HT4461 I am taking private music lessons.  My teacher and I agreed that learning to use Logic Pro X will be helpful to my progress.  If he buys a copy, do I have to buy a second copy in order to use it?  Or can we both use it based on purchase?

I am taking private music lessons.  My teacher and I agree that it will help my progress for me to learn use Logic Pro X.  If he and I both use Logic Pro X only related to his teaching me, do we need to make one purchase or two purchases of Logic Pro X?

First, thank you for your thoughtful and quick response.  However, your response seems to confirm my reading of the license agreement that I do not need my own licensed copy of the software.
Secondly, I apologize for not specifically noting that I am talking about running Logic Pro X on a MacAir.
Thirdly, as I read the license agreement, and as you interpret it, if Person A purchases Logic Pro X, and chooses to allow Person B's computer to be one of her five authorized computers to access iTunes/Mac App Store content, then it is not a violation of the license for both Person A and Person B to use Logic Pro X, plus any other content that Person A has or will purchase.
I do not want to commit piracy, of course, but as long as Person A does not violate the five authorized computer limitation and does not levy a charge on Person B for allowing his computer to be one of the five authorized (which would mean Person A is reselling the software, music, podcasts, etc.), I do not understand why Person A allowing Person B to use Logic Pro X is piracy any more than Person A allowing Person B to access iTunes Music. Obviously, if Person A deauthorizes the computer owned by Person B, then Person B can no longer use Logic Pro or listen to or use any other content that Person A has purchased from iTunes.
So if my teacher 1) only permits me, among all of her students, to have a computer that she will authorize, 2) has not reached the five computer authorization limit, and 3) does not charge me for listening to her purchased music or using her apps, including Logic Pro X (my lesson fee will be the same with or without her decision to authorize my computer), then I do not see that as piracy.  In fact, it seems content sharing is explicitly permitted by Apple, as long as it is limited to five authorized computers.  As for updates, she would apply them to her licensed computer on her MacAir and then authorize the update on my MacAir.
If a teacher tried to authorize more than five computers (which the system does not allow one to do) and/or charged students for using his/her purchased content, that is piracy.
    Am I missing something?

  • Logic Pro 7 will no longer load

have been using logic pro 7 with no problems but now suddenly it won't load i just get the spinning wheel of doom and have to force quit. tried it about 10 times rebooting etc and re-installed logic twice. it has worked once since and i thought this might have been because i didn't have my sound module plugged in on boot but now it makes no difference whether that's in or not. I don't think in fact that it was anything to do with that after all. It's an Alesis iO|2.
any ideas? I have installed the latest logic software update and some one recommended i install 'pro application updates' but when i try it says its not valid on my volume.
I literally can't use it cos it loads ( you can see the arrange window) but can't do anything cos of the spinning wheel
    I have...
    OSX 10.5.5
Imac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo 2gig ram

I'd reinstall it if I were you. I know its hassle but when troubleshooting one must try everything no matter how much it hurts!

I am running Mountain Lion and Logic on 64 bit if that helps. Please bear in mind i'm new to Mac so sorry if i am being stupid
    thanks in advanced

It does help as it might explain what has gone wrong with your upgrade...
Unfortunately there is no easy solution for this problem.. I have seen it several times in the past with my clients...  and in reality, the only real fix is to start from scratch with Mountain Lion as i describe in this thread....
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21094000#21094000
Sorry.. I know it is a huge pain in the butt.... but apart from going back to Snow Leopard and using Logic Pro 9.1.8 with that (Which you can do if you made full backups before you upgraded) this method is really your only solution I'm afraid to say.... as it seems your upgrade 'screwed the pooch' so to speak....

BFD Eco works fine as a Stand alone in my Computer. BFD Eco even shows up in Logic Pro's Audio Units Manager. The box next to BFD is checked and shows as validated. Then after selecting BFD Eco I press the (reset and rescan seletion) button. But Logic Pro still won't recogonize BFD Eco.
    Any advice?

What version did you have installed initially and what version did they tell you to update to?
Are you absolutely sure you are looking in the right place for the BFD Eco Software instrument in Logic? If it shows up as validated in the AU Plugin manager then it is quite odd that it would not show uop in the Software Instrument list. It may not open when you click on it, but it should show up there... at the very least
You know you are looking in the right place if you can also see the various Software instruments (Not FX..) that are included with Logic such as EXS 24... Can you see the EXS 24 Software Intrument when you go to find the BFD Eco Software instrument?  if you cannot see the EXS 24 what can you see when you press and hold the Software Instrument button?
Sorry if this seems so obvious a thing to ask and check on hut you wouldn't believe how many times users get this wrong..... They are either incorrectly looking in the Insert/FX section, they haven't created a Software Instrument track but an Audio or EXt Midi track instead.. or they are clicking on the button above the EQ display... or some other odd thing to do... hence my double check with you.
I can tell you, from a chat i had with one of my clients earlier this evening, that Eco works fine in Logic 9.1.8 so it has to be something you haven't done (like installing the correct update although he did confirm that the basic 1.5 update worked fine with 10.6.8 and 9.1.5...) or have done, like pressing the wrong button or looking in the wrong place!
