Logic pro or logic 9 app for new iMac i5- or i7?

I'm  a musician and teacher with a home studio that hasn't been running properly for a few years since I bought my DA88 in the late 80's,  and sold my 3m's 24 track tape recorder!  As I've been using PC's at school running Cubase & Nuendo, but at a very basic level, should I buy iMac i5 or i7 for my home studio production?
Then, should I download the logic 9 app on my iPad ready to copy to my iMac, if I buy it, or should I purchase logic pro software  to have a spare hard copy if and when I need to back it up?
Really don't know what to do?
How many watts per internal speaker is the iMac 27" & 25"?
As there is only a mini jack output on the iMac, how do I split the tracks separately onto my 24 channel O2R desk? I presume I will only get stereo out with a stereo jack plug in one output & have to do the mixing on the iMac?
I have a MOTU midi express 8 in & 4 out never yet used,  plus various outboard effects including Lexicon, SRV2000 and  Drawmer compressor limiters, Rocktron hush, Neumann mike, AKG 414 & SM58 mikes,, XMPTE SYMPTE synchroniser etc but all are redundant at the moment!
What do I need to purchase and to do to get started recording my 2 outboard keyboards, Roland sampler, 2 expander keyboard modules and 4 vocal tracks, all to be double and some treble tracked at times too?
Professional advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

I'll answer a couple of these and let others chime in.
In my opinion... you don't want to use built-in Mac audio output/iMac speakers for anything remotely resembling professional work. You have some pro equipment you need a pro or semi-pro audio interface with multiple ins/outs. You already have a MIDI interface so you're ok there.
Apple no longer sells "hard copy" software, most of the Logic 9 boxes have been removed from the shelves.
You will have to purchase from the App store.
Read this post to see what is, and what isn't included.

Don't bother downloading anything on the iPad that would be a wasted effort.
Hope you have a fast connection, Logics additional content is many, many gigs of data.
Amazed that you have Nuendo at school, it's both expensive and impressive, it is a recent version?

  • Can I install Logic Pro 9 Studio on my new iMac?

I need help with installing Logic Pro 9 Studio on my new iMac?

    Yes.
Assuming you have a DVD drive... to install from the DVDs themselves...
Just run Software Updates after you have installed it... so it updates LP9 (and Mainstage etc) to the latest versions which are compatible with Mountain Lion.

  • Just installed Logic Pro 8 on my BRAND NEW iMac 24"

So I had a 15 MBP (2.4 Ghz) and I just bought a 24" iMac (2.9 Ghz version) I spent all day installing all my software (Adobe Master Collection, Logic Pro, iTunes music) The first time I turned on the machine it started up, but then I tried to navigate somewhere and the computer froze right up..... I held the power button and restarted....
I mainly got this machine to use the Adobe software and Logic Pro..... Now when I went to open up a demo project in Logic, it's giving me an error code "Disk is too slow or System Overload.(-10010)"............... ?????? And the CD drive seems to be making a pretty noticeable loud noise and "clunky" sound.
I thought I was going to get better performance out of this machine than my MBP, but it seems to be worse!!! Can anyone fill me on as to WHY my BRAND NEW machine is acting like this?

Sounds to me like you got a clunker. Take it back to the Apple store, and get it replaced ASAP.
This has nothing to do with Logic... your drive might be all messed up...

  • Apps for new imac

My new intel based imac is set to ship tomorrow, and I'm pumped to get it, but after reading a lot of these posts I'm a little worried about software and certain applications causing problems. Some people are sayin that their machines are running really slow, and people think it's because they are running PPC apps. How do I know what apps to look out for, which ones are universal and all that?? How can you check to see if an app is PPC or intel? Give me the whole run down!!

    1. Check the versions of the iLife applications on the new iMac. You don't need to migrate them from the old iMac in any case, as the new iMac will include iLife.
    2. Everything which comes with an Intel Mac should be Intel native; applications you add to it later may not be.
    3. Some applications have free updates to Universal versions; search MacUpdate for information on specific applications.
    4. Not if you dragged them to the Applications folder.

  • Retrieving previously purchased apps for new imac

We just had to exchange our 3 week old imac for a new one due to a power issue and were not able to transfer our downloaded apps before doing the exchange.  Is there any way we can get the apps we had on the other computer downloaded onto the new one?

If these are apps purchased at the Mac App Store, then open the App Store application and click on the Purchases icon in the upper toolbar. Beside each one is an Install button. Click on it to download and install the app.
If these are apps purchased through iTunes (for an iPad or iPod) then open iTunes and download each app you purchased. There's no additional charge.

  • How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro?

How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?
This message appears: You can't open the aplication LogicPro.mpkg because power pc aplications are no longer compatible.
    Thanks folks

You should be able to copy all the files from your old computer, although it might not work if the old machine didn't have an intel processor. When I got a new Mac a few months ago, I used the migration assistant to copy everything from my old computer's time machine backup disk. All my old pro apps, such as Final Cut Pro 6, work fine on the new machine under Lion.
Later, I wanted to install Soundtrack pro and couldn't do it from the original disks. So I installed it on my old machine and copied the files. It worked perfectly.

  • Can't access Logic Pro 9 from app store.

    Hey guys,
Can't access Logic Pro 9 from app store. I purchased it from the App Store for my iMac in Jan 2012. I know have my wife's old macbook, and I'm trying to get put Logic on that computer too. I just updated it to Snow Leopard so that I could access the App Store.
Logic Pro shows up in the purchases tab on the laptop, but when I click install, the install button just goes white for a few seconds, then back to grey.
If I click on the App itself it says "The item you've requested is not currently available in the Australian Store." Only thing is I tested out downloading it onto my wife's new laptop only 2 weeks ago. Has it been removed from the App Store forever in that short little window? Quite annoying if I've missed the boat by such a short amount of time. If that is the case, is there any other way of transferring the app from one computer to another?
    Thanks,
    Thom

No.. its still available on the Aus App Store.... I was just speaking with a client of mine in Geelong and he successfully downloaded it under the Purchase tab last Saturday so....
Sign out of the App Store
    Quit the App Store
    Restart your Mac
    Launch the App Store..
Sign into the App Store... using the Apple ID you used to purchase Logic Pro 9
Look for any new Terms and Conditions popup you may need to agree to....
If you click on the actual Logic Pro 9  icon you will get the message you saw because LP9 isnt available to purchase on the App Store any longer... so only click on the install button to the far right of the Logic Pro 9 entry under the Purchase Tab...
Failing this... contact Aple directly as it is possible they will need to reset your Mac App Store account for it to work correctly (as has been needed in the past when this has occurred.)

  • Has anybody downloaded logic pro from the app store and how did it work thanks

has anybody downloaded logic pro from the app store and how did it work?
    thanks

I've recently upgraded my stuff with a Mac Mini Server and downloaded Logic from the app store with absolutely no problems at all. I'm on 10.7.3 with an i7 processor and 4Gb memory (yeah, may as well put another 4 in as well, I know).
Logic 9.1.6 is running very smoothly for me, but I think I'll go to 9.1.7 because there is a malfunction with time stretching regions in the Arrange window that the update's meant to fix.
A lot of your experience with downloading the additional content, apart from Logic itself, will depend on the speed of your internet connection, but the software handling of that aspect seems quite good - best to just load one lot of stuff at a time and see how it works out.

  • Basic Logic Pro Questions. I Am New To It

    Running OS 10.7.4
Hello....I am new to Logic Pro, graduating up from GB. I have few simple questions that I will ask on my next One to One, but I thought someone in Logic Pro Land can help for now.  Just be patient I am trying to understand concepts
    1. My One to One instructor here in NYC, down in the SoHo Store ( the best), helped me create a templete track, so I never have to listen to clicks or a metronome again ( I do VOs)....
    2. I have done some recordings on that template I saved it as COMPING, as that's what I want to learn at  my next one to one.... That track is my Logic Pro file in music.
    3. Based on that, all I want to do now is duplicate the template track. Is there a way to do that?
My own logic tells me...well if the track is saved under COMPING, all you got to do is launch Logic Pro.... the last track will come up (COMPING)..... so just delete the contents ( since it's saved) record what you want to record, and save it under a different name...for the sake of simplicity, let's say  I want to call it VO Track Number 2.....that track will appear in my folder under VO Track Number 2.....Is this correct?
    4. Barring that, is there another way of just duplcating the template track without having to name it something all the time, or perhaps name different duplicate tracks, Track 2, 3, 4, etc.?
    Recording questions
I recorded take one of a beer commercial. When I stoped the recording the head was right at the end where I stopped...when I went to record take 2, instead of just contuning, it back tracked a bit so the last few words on take 1 were recorded over.
    1. WHY?
    2. How do I prevent that from happening?
In GB, the recording just picked up where I left off, never back tracked...
    Anyanswers, greatly appreciated...

Next time, make a copy of your template before you record anything, in fact, save it as a template so a pristine copy will always be available under the "Templates" menu item. Then start the first project as VO-1 then VO-2...etc. Never start a project and save it the same name as your template.
Now you have to go in and remove the files from the arrange and Audio Bin or else they will stay associated with the project.
As for the recording, the last few words were not recorded over, they were just covered up.
The back tracking is due to the one bar count-in or you have some "preroll" set. Does it backtrack 1 bar?
I think the adjustment is under  "Settings/Recording".
I'll let others jump in and fill in the holes.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. If your other Mac is compatible with Logic Pro X, simply copy Logic Pro X from Applications folder to the external disk. Then, connect your external disk to the other computer, and move Logic Pro X to Applications folder.

  • Why does my Logic Pro (downloaded from App Store) suddenly hang when I load it up? Made no changes, can't figure it out.

    Suddenly stopped working.
It hangs at 'Loading core audio'. Cannot figure out for the life of me why.
Tried installing a version from disc, but it said it was not compatible with Mountain Lion. I'm running 10.8.2.
Did no updates, nothing. Just suddenly will not work.
Have tried reinstalling etc. etc., but again, nothing.
    Help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

What have you recently installed (such as plugins, drivers other DAWs etc)?
If you hold down the Control Key and then launch Logic Pro, does Logic start up successfully?
