Logic Pro -Used in Live Performance

Hi All,
I know this will seem like shameless self promotion ( it is, kinda...)
But, many folks on this list are always asking about "live" applications of Logic Pro and Virtual Instruments..
Latency, practicality etc..
Well... here is my experience: LIVE,
for your amusement and entertainment:
http://www.youtube.com/user/DrRyman
Macbook Pro 2 gig
RME FF800
Logic Pro
third Party plugs..
( yeah, I'll fess up as to what they are after i see anyone is interested)
Novation SL 61 controller
Let me know what you think,
Daniel

Yeah I haven't even touched the Environment...I don't get how it works whatsoever...and now I have even more complications.
I'm currently using two keyboards. One is a generic midi keyboard with just a midi in/out and another is my Edirol PCR-30. I also have a 8-pad drum machine unit that has it's own built-in-sampler and can also be used as a midi controller.
Now I'd like to "automate" the changes in keyboards. For the record, all of my keyboard sounds come from the built-in audio instrument plug-ins such as the ESX24, Sculpture, ES E, ES P, etc.
How could I have my larger generic keyboard play one sound, while my other controller plays another sound, and then, for example, for the choruses in my songs, have both of them play completely different sounds?
Would I need to get like a MOTU midi interface for all of these?
Is there anyway you can do this WITHOUT using the Environment? If not, could someone show me how to use this or send a screenshot of what their environment looks like so I could use it almost as a guide to building my own environment?
Also, we're trying to send the click track to our drummer without hearing the click in the main mix. Is there anyway to isolate/send the click using a presonus firepod? If not, can anyone reccommend a device that's reliable for this sort of thing?
Finally, what's the best way to connect to the main PA. Do most people run line out from their interface into the tape in of the mixer, or send maybe outs-1-2 to an interface?
I feel like I've conquered the software one day, and then the next I feel like I'm still new to the system. All help is very much appreciated, since I'm no expert at environments or music tech.
Thank you very much,
-D

  • Guys - taking Logic pro 7 out live !

Am a lover of Logic Pro 7,
I will be taking it out on the road soon and basically I am looking at new ideas to use it live. I run the backing off iTunes so it really is only running as a sound source.
    CME 76/Yamaha Piano/Roland Juno D/MOTU 828 MKII/Mac Book pro + Logic Pro 7.2
At the moment I just have a simple 16 channel sound pallete, each with a different sound and all on 'rec'. This way I can access all the sounds one by one by selecting a midi channel etc etc.
However I would love to get more adveturous with my live set up
Having split or even zones set up to play sounds on different sections of the piano/synth. Or play two channel strips at once, etc etc
Please let me know of any templates or other ways to create what i want.
    Regards :))

    Hi
Just have made the switch to MBP CD2 for my live instrument..
    10.4.8 LP 7.2.3
Did Namm Demos solid using live VIs and FX and many backing tracks.
All plugs and transport controlled by Novation Sl 61..
    Never an issue, solid..flawless.
Also did live band at my own wedding.. 4 songs with backing tracks..

  • Updating Virus kb with Logic Pro using emagic mt4

I have done the following set-up: iBook via USB into MIDI-Interface emagic mt4, mt4 via MIDI-Out into Virus kb MIDI-In (I have also set-up the Audio MIDI Setup in Max OS X 10.4.9 correctly).
    1. How do I import an MIDI-File (.mid), which is used to update my Access Virus kb synthesizer, into Logic Pro 7.0.1?
    2. How do I transfer that imported MIDI-File from Logic Pro 7 through my MIDI-Interface (emagic mt4) to my Virus kb?
Thank you so much for helping me out I am brand new to Logic Pro and the whole MIDI-functions and I have been searching for the solution for sooo long!!!

Set your virus to receive a midi data dump, hit play on logic.

  • HI my name is Luca. I have heard about workshops that apple stores are offering on LOGIC PRO X. I live in london but unfortunately nobody offers such workshop anymore. Does anyone know about this?

    Hi
my name is Luca, I live in London.
Is there any workshop I can book for Logic Pro X?
Has Apple stopped to offer such workshops? It doesn tm appear to be on their list anymore..
Where can I find it? Who should I contact?
The store regent street referred me on their online workshop list being unaware that the logic workshop doesn t appear there.......mmm

Apple Stores are allowed to offer these workshops if and when they can. Some of them do, but not all of them.
The One To One program is excellent if you are looking to get trained on Logic at the Apple Store.

  • How do you Control SPDIF input levels in Logic Pro using Apogee Ensemble

    Hello,
Question. I have an Apogee Ensemble audio interface hooked up to my Macbook Pro. I have a Motif XS8 that I record audio from through SPDIF.
I am able to get sound through to my audio track once setting the inputs in Logic, however the levels are not even close to halfway. I can not figure out how to fix adjust the SPDIF level to make it hotter b/c I know once I add virtual tracks and vocals through my preamp, the audio from my motif will likely not be hearable.
    Please let me know.
Also, when I record an audio track is says about 15 minutes remaining to record. Does that mean I have 15 mins of audio for each track or for all my recording period???

Not owning an Apogee Ensemble, maybe someone else who does has more definitive info can jump in, but do not confuse the lower level of the SPDIF input with "lesser quality". It's a digital connection, with no analog conversion.
-18 dBFS on a digital scale is the same as 0dB on an analog scale.
I think what you're experiencing, is the fact that so many people think they need to get the meters in Logic closer to 0dB, which is actually NOT what you want (when staying ITB). This thinking is left over from the days of analogue recording, or the early days of 16 bit digital recording.
Turn your other sources in Logic down, and you'll reap the benefits of not overloading the 2 buss, allowing the plug-ins to do their computations without distorting, etc... Then you can bring the over all level of your mix back up, in mastering.
If the Motif is considerably lower in volume than that, you could always insert a gainer plug-in on the audio track.
As to the 15 minutes, that is what Logic has pre-allocated for recording to your hard drive. It "re-sets" each time you go into record, so it's not saying "you only have 15 minutes of record time available". It's saying, "you have 15 minutes of hard disk space allocated each time you go into record, based on your sample rate and bit depth settings". This can be changed in the Audio pathway, but it's recommended to leave this number as low as possible/necessary, to avoid disk fragmentation.

  • How to transfer all the data from Logic pro to other drive (faster)?

    Hi
I am trying to upgrade the performance of my Mac and decided to upgrade the RAM and to use a dedicated HardDrive for Logic Pro using firewire (i have a mac mini server...). Think the Processor e fast enough...
How can i transfer all the information for that drive?
Can i move the media library from the OS drive to the new drive? or has it to stay were initially instaled?
I moved to Mac because my Windows "Super 16GB QuadCore PC" was giviing me trouble...in relation to connections, critical errors...
I am a novice on the Mac "ways"...
    Can someone give me directions?

Logic doesn't store the majority of its data in designated library places, so you can put your session files and audio files wherever you want. If you move the location of something, say an audio file, and logic doesn't know where to find that asset, then it'll present you with a dialog box which asks you if you can tell it where you moved it to, or if you'd like it to go off and search for files of that name for you. They're all just files on a hard disk. There's only a few things which have to be stored in particular places, such as preferences or sampler instruments. Anything that isn't part of the program, you can store it wherever you want. In a session you can have for example all the live parts on one hard disk, and then all your samples on another hard disk. It's all arbitrary and can be defined by you.
So yes, you can generally keep your media library wherever you want (as far as Logic is concerned).

  • How to uninstall Logic Pro 8 and Reinstall Logic Pro 7.2?

For numerous reasons I'd like to uninstall Logic Pro 8 and return to Logic Pro 7, the reasons for which I'd rather not discuss, as I'd like to focus on the reinstallation task.
Apple states that Logic Pro 7 still functions, but this is not entirely correct. Since many instruments were replaced, the complex 50-track songs that I painstakingly mixed on pure LP7 (prior to the upgrade) now sound completely different in LP7 post-LP8 install (as well as LP8 as you can imagine). It seems that the levels are actually different on some of the EXS and other instruments. Yes, Apple says they are richer and better, but I really don't care. I am in the middle of a CD and need to return to the state I was in prior to the upgrade.
Ultimately I'd like to reinstall Logic Pro 7 and/or its content in order to get all of my original instruments back.
Does anyone have a procedure for this? Should I uninstall Logic Pro 8 and then perform a complete reinstall of Logic Pro 7 following Apple's procedure? Or should I simply use Pacifist to replace the content files that were replaced? Will any of my preferences (plug-in settings) be lost during a reinstall? Should the rest of Logic Studio be uninstalled as well?
    Thanks so much in advance.
P.S. I'm just looking for a procedure and do not wish to discuss the reasons, which you'll find all over the forums.

Regarding copying the settings, these should all be in my personal user folder, correct? My plugin settings should all reside here as I understand. Would ANY customized settings reside anywhere OTHER than my user folder? *Yes, everything should live here, but it never hurts to snoop around the other folders just in case.*
I had modified some EXS instrument settings, but did not import new ones.
Where would the personal EXS settings exist - in my user folders or elsewhere? *All exs are stored Library / Application Support / Logic or GarageBand. The audio files for instrument should be stored there as well. You will need to copy and save both the instrument file and the associated audio files*.
If I simply modified an EXS instrument within a song, my understanding is that would be a property of the song itself, correct? *Yes, if you did not save the exs instrument as new instrument, it settings are stored with the song.*
    Also,
Which folders am I deleting when I "delete both versions of Logic"? *You can delete ANY and all folders associated with them. Delete them out of the Apps folder, utilities, and Application support*.
And how would I delete the new Logic 8 content - where does it reside? *The Library. Not in front of my mac so sorry I can't be more specific.*
I just spoke to Apple and they recommended an "Erase and Restore" of the entire system, and a reinstall of Logic 7 in order to get me back to where I was - do you agree? *Yes, that is the preferred method but only if you are willing or in a position to start from scratch i.e re-installing all 3rd party apps, hardware drivers ect. Remember to back up all your important files.*
    Thanks!

  • Will Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo perform well enough with Mainstage.

    Hi there,
I normally keep each of my macs for about 4-5 years before upgrading, and its about that time for me. I currently have a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB Ram, and am leaning towards getting a new 27 inch imac for my home studio. My alternative is getting the 15 inch mac book pro retina, which I could still hook up to a large display at home, but also use for live performances.
My question is has anyone had any experience running Mainstage (2 or 3) on a Core 2 Duo, and does it run it well enough to process reverb and maybe chorus for one vocalist, and a couple of guitar effects for an acoustic guitar?
The reason I'm leaning towards the iMac, is because my configuration will likely be $400-600 less expensive than the macbook pro retina, the size of the screen, and the ease of not having to plugging a laptop into all my peripherals whenever I enter my studio. This will only be viable however, if my macbook pro is capable of handling mainstage duties.
A couple of notes, I'm aware I can always get a external monitor for a macbrook pro, but am interested to hear anyone elses experience with either an intel core 2 duo running Mainstage, or your experience using an iMac vs a Macbook pro for your home studio.
    Thanks in advance!

I have a mid-2009 MBP with a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of RAM and MainStage 3.0.1 runs very well.  I recently played a pit orchestra job with Alicia's Keys as my primary piano sound from within MainStage and there were no problems (I did alias the patch throughout the show but that's just good resource useage).
I suspect you would have a similar experience on your current hardware.  Buy MainStage and try it out.  Its only $30 or so and you can run it on any Mac you own so you really won't waste the money.
    Good luck!

  • Kontakt instruments playback in Logic Pro 9 but they don't bounce to disk.

After much searching and random attempts with settings in both Logic Pro and the Kontakt player, I haven't found a way to send the playback from the Kontakt player to Logic Pro. In Digital Performer (e.g.) it's accomplished by recording real-time playback of the MIDI-to-Kontakt (or other player being used as a plugin) and then drop the audio file into an audio track. I don't see a way to do that in Logic. When I bounced in realtime I heard the Kontakt instrument but it wasn't recorded. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
MacBook Pro, M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

I believe I am running it as a plugin. Kontakt is checked in the Audio Units Manager as available in Logic Pro and it appears in the Library when I create a stereo External MIDI track. If I create a Software Instruments track (which doesn't see Kontakt), I can reassign the track as a MIDI Instrument and select Kontakt 5 Virtual Input. That justs reassigns the channel as an External MIDI instrument and I'm back where I started.
In Kontakt, the Output for Channel 1 (st. 1) only allows me to select my audio interface - M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. The only selections that will enable stereo playback in Logic appear in this screenshot:
I tried using Reaktor in the same way and got the same result - playback but no bounce.
In response to your multi-timbral setting idea, RT, the patch is a stereo sample and the multi-timbral aspect would only apply if I were loading a Software Instrument track (which apparently only allows selection of instruments within Logic).
I tried working in the Environment window hoping I could cable Kontakt to Logic but that failed as well. I'm stumped.
Thanks for the suggestions. Any other ideas are welcome!

  • Vocal effects in Logic pro 8

    Hi everyone.
My question is if everyone here noticed that the vocal effects in Logic pro 8 are not the same as in garageband 3... I mean I've been working for a while with garageband and the vocal effects of garageband are amazing.. especially the live performance one...but now I just Updated to Logic 8 and the live performance effect is sooo dry compared to garageband live performance effect... the same for all the other vocal effects... they're really dry..I don't know if its my software.. I'm simply sad with this...I Upgraded to logic to get better results and suddenly I see myself having this problem... Could anyone tell me if they have the same problem as me?? Do you feel that your vocal effects in logic are the same or even better than Garageband 3??
    Thanks...

The plug-ins in Logic provide a greater control than those of Garageband, and they come with a price: you need to have some working knowledge of how things work in Logic. Several factors can affect your sound, ranging from where you plugged things in (routing) to what you have plugged in. The problem here is that you're simply plugging in something with a blind assumption that because Logic is a better piece of software than Garageband, your sound will automagically be better. There is no magic plug-in.

  • BEWARE: To All Prospective Logic Pro 8 Buyers With PPC G5s

Logic Pro 8 GUI/graphics performance in PPC G5 is unacceptably slow!!! I don't understand why is it slower than the previous versions. Our studio is considering abandoning 4 licenses of Logic after over 10 years of use!!! We have a recording studio here in Boston and our clients are constantly pointing out how slow LP8's GUI operates.
I'm extremely frustrated with this upgrade and can't revert to Logic Pro 7 because LP8 is not backwards compatible.
I heard positive reports of the graphics performance in the new Intel Macs. Logic 7 graphics worked great on my G5 Quad, except the ocassional crash due to multi-threaded code problems in AU plugins and LP7 not recovering from the exceptions. Must say that LP8 handles these problems much better.
So what is going on?? We have three QUAD G5 with 8GB RAM & 30in LCD bought on Jan 2006, spent over $7k on each and we can't go out & buy the new Mac Pro for now.
There have been many reports on several forums of Logic Pro 8 stating that graphics performance been crippled on the PPC G5 machines.

im running on a Dual 1.8 Ghz G5 PPC, and while i've noticed somewhat of a decrease in responsiveness and snappiness, i wouldnt call it unusable or crippling. It's about what I'd expect from relatively new software running on a machine thats 4-5 years old.
My guess is these kinks will be ironed out in an update soon, or could be eliminated entirely with the release of Leopard. I assume Logic 8 is or is being optimized for use with leopard and the core audio/video revisions that will come with it.
... but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed

I'v been using logic on mac since v6, I have never bin able to have logic run continuously for more than an hour!! It always locks-up on me (crashes). I am at the end of my tether. I love the look of logic and love the way it works, (wen it works!) Am I missing sumthin? anybody?
I have checked all the following things:
I have checked all my memory modules. (removed 1 faulty 512mb)
temporarily removed addional internal/external fiwi drives
    repaired drive permission,
    Installed pro application suport 3.1
disabled ALL third party au's (Absynth, atmosphere, minimoog v)
    reset logic pro7 prefs
removed motu av/audiophile 2496 drivers and used interal audio
    tweaekd audio preferance settings.
...and still it crashes! slight improvement yeah, but crashes after hour or so
I am using logic pro 7.1.1 1/2gig ram, 4/5 audio tracks, sum logic au effects.
Am i doing sumthin wrong.? I'v checked and double checked all my g4 hardware with apple hardware tester. could there a seriouse bug in MY copy/version of logic that prevents it from running a few audiomidi tracks for an hour? Can any1 help advise?
Considering i spent ova £600 on my logic pro,
my heart sank when i (out of curiosity) downloaded and installed Logic Express Trial on sun 4th, I set it to play.. and to my astonishment it ran from 10:00 sunday morning to 23:00! all the time iwas swapping/jumpng around screensets editing and generally USING it, trying to crash it! Express remained rock solid all the way ever since, is there an pro equivalent?

logic 7.1 runs ok here, but that's on a G5. Did you loop the hardware ckecking prg? A guy at applecare told me that the memory is only checked random. If you want a thorough check you could press ctrl-L ( or something like that; I forgot) when starting the harware check to loop the prg, run it overnight and see what comes up. I can imagine logic pro uses a lot more memory than logic express, so it would be more sensitive to memory failure.
Any other prg that uses a lot of memory? Is your mac stable when running a load of prg at the same time?

  • Why can't I colour code my tracks / instruments in a Logic Pro Template?

    Hi,
I'm trying to create my own Logic template using an existing example template I found online.
In this template, I want to be able to colour code all of my instruments / tracks so that each time I load my template, all the tracks will be set to specific colours (i.e. all kicks are dark blue, hats are light blue, synths are purple, bassline red, etc etc...)
I've read that you can do this in the mini view menu (View > Configure Track Header > then tick 'Track Colour Bars') then you just select the desired colours for each track, and when you use this template again all these colours will be set.
You can see the menu settings here ('Track Colour Bars' selected):
I've done this with no problems on a completely new project (see image A below) but when trying to do it on this template I downloaded, the colours are not changing (see image B below)
IMAGE A - Configure track header on a blank project
IMAGE B - Configure track header on a existing project template
Does anyone have any idea what might be overriding the colour settings on the template (IMAGE B)? As you can see, I have been able to colour the actual midi but it will  not colour the actual track.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was having problems with this for a while. Logic Pro used to let you color they regions and the track at the same time. Now you have to color the track first then click, Option (Alt for PC keyboards) +Shift+C this changes the color of the regions on the track to the same color as the track. Hope this helps!

  • Can I buy Logic Pro 9 on its own?...

Or only as part of the Logic Studio suite? The Apple Store website doesn't seem to have an option for buying Pro 9 on its own.
What are the main differences between Pro and Logic Express.

Think of Logic Studio as buying only Logic Pro 9, but getting a whole bunch of extras for free.
And it's still half the price, and ten times the content, of what Logic Pro used to be on it's own.
And Logic Pro, came with all the optional extras which used to make the full Logic Platinum twice as much as Logic Pro was.
When I was first starting out, I was lucky enough to sort of intern at a studio, where I composed for commercials and very bad corporate videos and such. I was barely 18 at the time, and among other gear, the hallowed music production workstation I was trained on to do this work was the Fairlight series 3. By then the Fairlight was already a bit past its prime (this was the early 90s), but just to make a point - the thing cost like 100 grand. And was significantly less capable than one instance of the EXS 24. In fact, the laptop I use now, does more than everything we could do in that whole studio back then, outboard gear included. OK I'm not counting the mics and preamps. Nor the acoustically designed control room or recording rooms. But you get the point.
Ok I sound like grandpa going on about you young whipper-snappers, you have no idea how good you have it etc.. But I'm a pro musician only in my mid 30s, so it wasn't really that long ago.
499 bucks for everything I had access to in a multi-million dollar studio back then? Sounds like a more or less reasonable deal to me.

  • How do I get Logic Pro to work?

I finally believed all the hype about Mac being better and gave in. I got a MacBook primarily to use GarageBand and Logic Pro, which are the programs I also use in class. I go to set up Logic Pro. Everything goes smoothly until I try to open the program and I receive this message:
"You can't use this version of the application Logic Pro with this version of Mac OS X. You have 9.0.0."
Please tell me there's an easy way to fix, upgrade, etc. this - without having to purchase anything additional. This was not a cheap enough computer to just accept the fact that the features I wanted most may or may not work or be the right programs after installation.
    Thanks.

GarageBand is a stripped down, basic, user friendly DAW based on Logic. If you are buying Logic Pro, use Logic Pro. It's a professional application, with a leaning curve.  Why buy logic pro if you plan on using GarageBand anyway? Take the time to read the manual, read/watch tutorials, and read others questions on forums.
GarageBand is meant to be able to open, and use easily and immediately by anyone with a mac. Logic pro is the opposite.
My advice: ask yourself what you need in logic pro that GarageBand can't do for you? If all you want or need is more AU plug ins, you might consider buying instrument plugins and continuing to work in GarageBand.
However, if you find the power and features of GarageBand limiting (which some would pretty much off the bat), then it's def work it to put in the time and energy into learning logic.
My shorter answer would be: all the garage jam packs you get w logic pro you could use with GarageBand.
As far as logic's drum sampler and synths etc...... See my longer answer. If you're spending the money on logic, and want to use logic's synths etc you prob want to spend the time learning it, as GarageBand doesn't play in the same league as logic.
