Logic Pro X-Metronome Snag:

There is probably an easy fix for this, but after almost 2 days, I can't find it.
I like to record in sections, with the metronome counting in a single bar. In Pro X, the count-in is recording over the overlapping bar. I had no problem with this in Logic 9 Studio. Help?   --Jeff

I'm on Logic 9 but I think it should be similar.
1.  In Preferences/Audio and set the Aggregate Device as both the Input/Output device.
2.  Go to the Mixer Environment section. You either will have, or need to create Output channel strips for all of the stereo channels pairs. Example: If I combine my RME 8 channel audio with the stereo built-in I will have a total of 10 channels output or 5 stereo pairs. If you set the Aggregate device up correctly built-in audio will be channels 9 and 10.
3.  Now, go to Settings/Metronome.  Under the software instrument metronome you should have a place to set the output pair. On my system I set it to 9-10. The Output channel strip you created in the Environment will be the click volume control.
Works here... if you tell me there's no place to set the Metronome output destination I will be extremely dissapointed in Apple/LogicX.
Regarding the Aggregate device.  You main audio system should be the clock master, the built-in audio should be set to resample.

  • Why do all of the drum kits in Logic Pro X have a delay? All of my drum hits (drum kits only, not drum machine) are behind the beat.

When I turn on the metronome, it's in sync with EVERYTHING except the drum kits.
Is anyone else having this problem?
When I change the plugin on the these tracks to a LPX drum machine or to a 3rd party drum plugin  the problem goes away.

    Is Plug-in Latency Compensation enabled?

  • What is tempo in Logic Pro 9?

    Hi,
I am a professional musician with 30 years of experience and academic background.
I seriously consider buying a LogicPro. I'm familiar with it, I've been frequently using it in the recording studios.
I have a simple question, yet it has to do with the thinking behid LogicPro9.
In all the documentation it has been rather poorly covered:
What is a tempo and how and where it connects to a measure definition?
OK, one may say, 120 BPM, for example, or whatsoever, and that's fine.
But what is *a beat* and where it is getting defined?
In "Metronome Settings" there is a sensible approach:
A click tone for the bar setting (which reflects the barline)
A click tone for the beat setting (which reflects the beat definition)
A division definition + (optional) click tone for the division.
However it is only for clicking purpose.
To my surprise, if one tries to set a tempo in global tracks that relates to the the beat definition for a song section, confusion occurs. Tempo happens to be a hard-coded dogma. How come?
A trivial answer is: it has to be a quarter-note. But here is no such definition in music practice or theory. This happens to be very false for beats other than quarter notes, such as half notes, eight notes, or, let's say dotted quarter notes, to name just a few. One may not frequently find such designations in mainstream pop music, or music for commercials & games, but music in general is full of such designations, for example film music, classical music, chamber music…
Beat is a fundamental concept in music and has to be definable as such. Tempo has to relate to the definition of a beat, not to a fraction of a mainstream prejudice or unquestioned practice.
What if one wants to use Logic as composition tool for making a serious piece of music? Where to define such a tempo, so it that both, signature and tempo read and behave correctly for a respective section, without having to do manual on-the-fly calculations, and without misdefining, let's say a 60 BPM tempo for a 2/2 measure as a 120 tempo, or a 2/2 measure as 2/4 measure, for example?
    Thanks in advance.
    S

I'm not entirely sure whether I'm on the right track here, but I'll give it a shot.
The glossary in the Logic manual has this definition of what is reffered to as a tick -
'The smallest unit of timing resolution in a MIDI sequencer. In Logic Pro, this is 1/3840th
of a note. Logic Pro can go down to single sample accuracy (at sufficient zoom levels) for
edits and positioning, but the MIDI protocol is not fast enough to support this.'
So, the value (number of ticks) of a whole note, crotchet, semiquaver, whatever, is in fact variable, according to the tempo of a piece of music. This doesn't matter - the important matter is whether that particular resolution issufficient for all normal musical purposes; I can't imagine anyone finding that it isn't. It has to be like this because that's how digital processes work, by manipulating numbers on a basic level - the program does that for you though, you don't have to calculate anything yourself !
You can easily insert tempo or time signature changes in Logic (you don't need the global track to insert time signatures). The score facilities are very extensive in Logic, although I don't use them myself much; certainly capable of use a serious composition tool, as many musicians have and do.
I think you may be thinking about it in perhaps a little too much detail - the best thing to do is get Logic and get stuck in to doing something and work it all out as you go along - there is a lot to learn, so be aware that it will take time and a bit of head scratching and purple language if you're that way inclined, but it will very probably pay off in the end.

  • Logic Pro 6.4.1 in OSX 10.4.7

    Hi everyone,
Hopefully someone can help me. I have Logic Pro 6.4.1. It was working fine on my previous OS X 10.2.8, but I went directly updates to the latest tiger version OSX it malfunctioned. Two things. If I try to open a session that was created in OS X 10.2.8 it opens up but each time a new audio region on a different audio channel starts no sound comes out, I stop it and sound starts but not when a new region starts...Hopefully someone can answer my question. The other thing is that it never quits normally.....y "suddenly quits" but when I have finished saving the session and choose quit...it stalls a bit then I get the message it "suddenly quits". Why could this be?....THANKS!! Oh, my audio interface is a digi rack 002.

    Hey! Welcome to the forum.
Version 6 is not directly supported in Tiger. Panther is as far as it got.
Unfortunately you have to use LP 7 in Tiger. There are other issues that you have mentioned in version 6 with Tiger. Like the metronome is broke.
you can mark this post as answered.

  • Basic Logic Pro Questions. I Am New To It

    Running OS 10.7.4
Hello....I am new to Logic Pro, graduating up from GB. I have few simple questions that I will ask on my next One to One, but I thought someone in Logic Pro Land can help for now.  Just be patient I am trying to understand concepts
    1. My One to One instructor here in NYC, down in the SoHo Store ( the best), helped me create a templete track, so I never have to listen to clicks or a metronome again ( I do VOs)....
    2. I have done some recordings on that template I saved it as COMPING, as that's what I want to learn at  my next one to one.... That track is my Logic Pro file in music.
    3. Based on that, all I want to do now is duplicate the template track. Is there a way to do that?
My own logic tells me...well if the track is saved under COMPING, all you got to do is launch Logic Pro.... the last track will come up (COMPING)..... so just delete the contents ( since it's saved) record what you want to record, and save it under a different name...for the sake of simplicity, let's say  I want to call it VO Track Number 2.....that track will appear in my folder under VO Track Number 2.....Is this correct?
    4. Barring that, is there another way of just duplcating the template track without having to name it something all the time, or perhaps name different duplicate tracks, Track 2, 3, 4, etc.?
    Recording questions
I recorded take one of a beer commercial. When I stoped the recording the head was right at the end where I stopped...when I went to record take 2, instead of just contuning, it back tracked a bit so the last few words on take 1 were recorded over.
    1. WHY?
    2. How do I prevent that from happening?
In GB, the recording just picked up where I left off, never back tracked...
    Anyanswers, greatly appreciated...

Next time, make a copy of your template before you record anything, in fact, save it as a template so a pristine copy will always be available under the "Templates" menu item. Then start the first project as VO-1 then VO-2...etc. Never start a project and save it the same name as your template.
Now you have to go in and remove the files from the arrange and Audio Bin or else they will stay associated with the project.
As for the recording, the last few words were not recorded over, they were just covered up.
The back tracking is due to the one bar count-in or you have some "preroll" set. Does it backtrack 1 bar?
I think the adjustment is under  "Settings/Recording".
I'll let others jump in and fill in the holes.

  • MacBook Pro and Current Logic Pro Version

Because of Apple's secrecy with releases I bought a brand new Powerbook G4 (1.67MGHZ) about a month ago. This morning I go online and see the new MacBook Pros. Anyone have any thoughts about the worthiness of trying to snag one of these new Intel based Macbooks. I use my Powerbook and Logic Pro professionly as my main rig and need everything (Logic, Absynth, Battery, Reason, Recycle, interfaces, etc.) to work properly now and not in 6 months.
    Thanks in advance,
    Markoman
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Revolutionary changes in the Mac platform come along every five years or so (the switch from 68K to Power PC, the switch from System 8 and 9 to Mac OS X, etc.)
The general trend is that when the new wave arrives, it takes six months to a year for all the third-party high end esoteric applications and hardware (like audio and music equipment) to be updated to become fully compatible.
If I were you I would buckle down and get to composing and recording a lot of music with the PowerBook you just bought, and make it pay for itself. It will do today what you bought it to do a month ago, and I hope you were happy with its capabilities when you bought it.
Then think about a MacBook Pro when summer rolls around--assuming the particular tools you are fond of using are Mac on Intel-native by then.
The "early adopters" who run out to get the first MacBook Pros will undoubtedly face some frustration when some components of their music-making system aren't quite ready to run on the new hardware. This is the price that early adopters always must pay.
My general sense, though, is that the G4/G5 to Intel migration is going to go more smoothly than the one from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. It looks like Apple, Intel and the software developers got a good head start and are on top of things this time.

  • *Logic Pro 9.1.1, Garageband, Waveburner, Abelton suddenly crashed and won't open at all !

I recently was working on a project in Logic Pro 9.1.1, saved the project and put my macbook to sleep. When i return, my mac wont turn on for the first 10-15 minutes sitting on the blank screen with the rotating circle. When it finally loads through and comes on I find that my Logic Pro software along with Waveburner, Garageband, Abelton, basically any DAW that i try to run will not open. The application icon just bounces and then shows the crash report, i also tried simply opening the project file. I have tried re-downloading the Logic Pro software with no luck. I desperately need this software to be working again, i will post the crash report along with this hoping someone could help out.
    Thanks, Alex

    Alex,
If you have to ask about backups then I would have to assume you have not been making any.. be it Clones of your System Drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! (My personal favorite) that you manually save to an external HD or you haven't setup and been using Time Machine that is built into OS X that automatically backs up everything to an ext HD.  I highly recommend you use one of those methods from now on... and in fact i highly recommend you use both methods.. as the Clone method allows you to quickly wipe out everything and reinstall from the clone image to take you back to where you were before any issue arrived. I make one every time before I upgrade anything major.. and I also make one every week...
So, as i said, did you try checking and repairing your System Disk using OS X's Disk Utility? That is the only possible other option you have at this time as you have no backups..
Other than that.. You will probably need to start again from scratch.... formatting the HD.. installing OS X and then your Apps etc...
Make sure you move/copy all personal data files such as Photos, docs, Logic Pro Projects and so on.....to an external HD before you reformat and start again... You can then move those personal data files back manually after you have reinstalled everything...

  • How many times can I install Logic Pro?

I need to re-install Logic Pro 8 on my computer but I hear there is a limit to how many times you can do so. Anybody know what the limit is?

No limit on reinstalling to the same machine, it will work fine.

  • Mac Shuts Down Unexpectedly in Logic Pro

I sure hope someone can help me with this. For the last few months my Mac Pro starting shutting down unexpectedly typically when running Logic but not limited to Logic. I have updated everything that I can find. I have taken the computer in the store for support twice where they said that after testing there was no issue with the power supply or the logic board and determined that the hardware was okay. The only thing he could tell me is that he thought that it might have to do with all of the dongles on my usb hub. Before the hub was being powered by the Mac so I got a new hub that is now self powered. I thought that it might have to do with the fact that I run Logic through a Digi 002 which I know a lot of people have had stability issues with. Yesterday I also updated my Ilok and Eliscencers and it seemed to work. Today after a solid day of no crashes it was back to the same old stuff. Out of nowhere while Logic is running the audio signal abruptly stops but not to silence it holds a buzzing sound of the last audio that was processed. Then a grey screen comes down and gives me the notice that I need  to restart my computer. Mine has done this at least 3 times already. The laptop isn't connected to a power source, but it says there is still about 30% battery remaining. It has happened before with 50% and even 60%. It's not that it falls asleep, I would be in the middle of doing something and it just shuts off. I don't think it's overheating... It's a little warm, but the fan isn't 'working hard' or anything. It's not happening consistently, but it's happened enough times that it has made me concerned. Here's my battery info:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: DP-bq20z951-397b-6c24
    Manufacturer: DP
    Device name: bq20z951
    Pack Lot Code: 0000
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 002a
    Hardware Revision: 0005
    Cell Revision: 0100
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2272
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3326
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 124
    Condition: Good
According to the stats... it doesn't really look like a battery problem. I really hope the warranty would cover a battery replacement though, if that's what it requires

  • Looking for help getting EZdrummer to work in Logic Pro 9

First off let me say I have looked everywhere and even talked to toontack about the following problem. Toontrack as said that the plug-in is working properly and the problem is with Logic.
Ok so I purchased toontrack ezdrummer and drumkit from ****. After installing them and updating to ezrumming 1.2 I am unable to load ezdrummer in logic pro 9. The really strange thing is that it will launch when using garageband and fully function.
In logic it is not in AU manager and not there for selection in the channel strip, so I thought at first that it was only installing as a VST. However, when looking in Library>Audio>Plug-Ins>Components, EZdrummer.component is there. I thought this was where Logic looked for AU plug-ins but I'm now thinking thats wrong but I've not been able to find anything saying different.
Please guys any help you can offer would be outstanding. I'm so fed up I'm about to get a refund but I would rather use this software.
    Thanks.

    EZDrummer works fine here.
You could try trashing this file:
    Macintosh HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.audiounits.cache
On the next launch, Logic will rescan all your plugins.
You could also try a new OS X user account.
And what exact version of Logic are you using?

  • How do I use my computer keyboard instead of a MIDI keyboard to enter notes? In Garage Band I simply go to View - musical typing but there is no such prompt in Logic Pro 7.

Ihave always used my Logic Pro 7 program with a MIDI keyboard for note entry. I do not presently have a MIDI keyboard and wish to use my computer keyboard for note entry. I know this is possible but cannot recall the command to set that up. Can anyone refresh my memory? I know that on Garageband on just need to go to view - musical typing but that is not the command in Logic Pro.

    Hi,
    Hit the Caps Lock key.

  • Logic Pro 7.2 and Tascam FW-1884 Not Working

I recently upgraded to Logic Pro 7.2 and I'm using a Tascam FW-1884 as my audio interface / Control Surface. Everything was working fine in 7.1.1, but now it doesn't work correctly. When I press buttons and faders on the Tascam I see MIDI information changing in Logic, but not in any of the correct places. When I click on the screen controls in Logic the Tascam does reflect the same on the board, but not the other way around? I updates the Tascam Plug-In (.bundle) file, the Control Panel, and even the Firmware. Still does not work. The faders go up on boot-up and down when I quit the program, but that is it. Any help would be greatly appreciated? I'm using a Mac G5, dual 2.7ghz processors, and 2.5 gigs in RAM. My gut is telling me it's something with the upgrade, but maybe others have resolved the problem without reprogramming every control one by one.

    Mr. Walden,
I recently switched to Macintosh and am learning to use Garage Band. I have an 1884, as do you, and I plan to invest in Logic Express. Do you have any comments or suggestions concerning the marriage between Logic and the 1884?

  • How do I get more instruments in Logic Pro?

When I was installing Logic Pro 9, I think it offered me to download extra instruments...I clicked ''no'' or something like that. I'd like to get those instruments now so I was wondering in anyone could help me. I think this is why my brother has more instruments than me...

Logic Pro/Download Additional Content--this will bring up a dialog box which shows what you have installed and what is available for download.

  • I can't find converted apple loops in the loop browser within Logic pro 7

    Hello There.
I've cereated some apple loops with the apple loops utility. unfortunately I am unable to find them in the loop browser within Logic pro 7.2.1.
I've scaned them using the project manager " so Logic knows about them"
but still didn't reflect in the loop browser.
Is this the normal behavior or what am I doing wrong.
I hope I am doing something wrong, as to me the main feature of the loop browser is to be able to audition the loops quckly at the song tempo.
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Cheers
P.S searched in the Forum but the answers arn't very clear
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.67 Mhz 2gig Ram

Just drop them on the Loop Browser and the rest should be taken care of.

  • Does anyone use MIDI loops in Logic Pro to compose music?

Seriously, if anyone out there uses the MIDI loops to compose music in Logic, how the heck do you do it? Especially if you are also using audio loops, it seems almost impossible to me. The chord transpositions that you get from the chord track are not even to the right pitch, and the transposition behavior is different according to whether you drag the loops into the arrange area before or after putting the changes in the Chord track. The signature track is no better, as it doesn't seem to affect audio loops. So how do you get the bass loops etc. to play in the keys you want them to without going through extraordinary contortions? I looked at one of the Logic Pro books, and it said to transpose by using the transpose function in the inspector, but that only lets you transpose by octaves! Do you really go in and edit the loops by hand to transpose each note?
Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated.

Put the mouse pointer on top of the transpose number, which is zero, hold down the left mouse button and drag up or down to transpose by steps. At the beginning of either the getting started or Logic manual there's an explanation of the different types of mouse/key behavior, if you're not used to using Logic it's a good idea to go over these.
Also, Logic does not always use simplified Mac conventions (thank the stars for that), as a result you have a lot more variety of data input, it varies according to the task at hand.
