Logic, Reason, or Cubase

I have been using Logic Express for two years, mainly the virtual instruments. I am looking to upgrade to something that offers more but don't really know where to get started, and was wondering what the differences, the pros and cons, are to the logic system, propellerhead, and cubase? Thanks for any help!

IMHO, Reason is a different type of application - like Live is a different application. I haven't used Cubase in a while but the last version I used was not on a level with Logic at all.
You didn't mention Digital Performer which still has the best and ironically the most "logical" workflow, interface and GUI of any other DAW application I've worked on. Downside to DP is that it is way processor inefficient compared to Logic for VI's. Great interface, really good upgrades (usually free), but way lousy customer support and the included VIs are pretty lame. MOTU's paid VIs are really great (MX4, MachFive II, Symphonic Instrument, and Ethno area all really good). Price is now a consideration as well since DP plus those VIs would be over $2,000 retail I think.
I've been using logic for about a year now. The interface is still suck city. It gets better over time, but it still needs a lot of improvement. It is like having a car with a quirky transmission or srarter that you learn to shift or start over time. You know it's goofy, but it doesn't bother you after a while. It is hard to believe how bad the interface in L7 sucked. L8 is a huge improvement though. One big annoying thing is that you have to assign keys to certain features if you want them at all. Nice to see Logic finally get on board with the consolidated window circa DP 2005 although as with most things, the DP implementation is better (and slower heh heh). Logic is WAY processor efficient, has fantastic VIs, good effects, nice sample library, the Apple Loop browser - and the interface still blows comparitively.
However be all this as it may, for $499 (or the $199 upgrade or whatever it is), Choosing Logic Studio is a NO BRAINER. While the Logic 8 "upgrade" is pretty yawn underwhelming from a "new features and improvements" standpoint (sticking in a couple of minor features found elsewhere for a while), it is a small step in the right direction. Hopefully there are bigger steps to follow.
Look at the bright side... if you're not familiar with anything BUT Logic, you won't miss anything from the other DAWs. I envy you. You can get great work done with Logic, the VIs and effects are great. For $499, it simply can not be beat. For all its shortcomings, Logic is the only choice.
You should also search the web for comparison discussions.

  • Rewire won't work with Logic + Reason

I started a project with Logic + Reason and everything was working fine. But then one day it stopped working.
    1. It'll work without Rewire (just a mixer in Reason)
    2. The Aux channels on the Logic mixer don't indicate any levels.
    3. The level indicators on the Hardware Device in Reason aren't indicating any signal
    4. Rewire DID work one day after it wasn't working but now it isn't again.
    5. I've tried restarting my computer and even changing my audio device to "Built-In Audio"
    Why won't rewire work?
Message was edited by: RyConn M.D.

I have been having this same problem. One time Rewire will work and the next try it won't. I found that Logic will not see the Rewire channels when you go to add an Aux channel in the mixer screen. If you see the Rewire channels in this section, then Rewire will work. If not then Rewire will not see Reason and it will not function. It just started happening for me this last week or so. I wonder if Apple made some sort of change that is causing this problem. I never had a problem with Reason before this last week or so. It was always a really solid program interface before this. I am getting frustrated. I have reloaded Reason and Logic with no change. AI deleted the rewire files in the library. It may then function once and then it goes bad again. Can anyone Help Us?

Why not to Join Fatc to fact tables in OBIEE... What is the Logical Reason
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Venkat,
I am coming from the basics of a star schema here, so hope it helps
    What is a fact?
A fact is something that has all measures which can be aggregated (Units, Dollars, # of Orders) etc with keys to different dimensions.
    What is a dimension?
It is the context with which we understand/record/retrieve the measures in the fact. We understand "# of Orders" for a product/By a customer etc.
So joining a dimension and a fact helps to answer the Who/What/When kind of business questions. Ex : Who bought these products? What was the product type? When these products were sold kind of...
Now just imagine tying up fact to another fact. With this kind of model, you can never answer any business question.
I have never tried joining a fact with another fact in OBI (But do not think it will allow it though :) )
    Hope I am clear.
    Thank you,
    Dhar

I Dont understand how one can limit the number of emails, using Ios8. It seems the feature was taken away. i just want to understand why?
yes, i know, what is the point of asking for reasoning, but it is just so frustrating when improvements or upgrades seem to take away features that were logical and productive.  Why must it be so counter intuitive to upgrade.
ANother example is, the one swipe to update facebbok. Ok, this is not important stuff we are talking, but, wouldnt a one swipe feature be more productive then gong to open the app etc
    so frustrating.

You can't limit by number of emails but you can limit by lenght of time. Go to settings> mail, contacts, calendars> accounts> mail> mail days to sync> change the aount of days you wan to sync.
I don't understand the FaceBook question. I update FaceBook by tapping the update button.

PCM (= wav, aiff, sdII) Audio files made by either can be imported by either.

For details on Logics' side, see chapter 29 (p. 625) of the LP 8 User Manual.
    regards, Erik.
ps, I hope Pancenter can chime in. He uses both.
    Two possible suggestions.
Cubase (full version) can export OMF files that Logic can read as long as there aren't too many regions. This will let you import audio in one step then import the MIDI file into the same project.
The other method for dealing with audio is to use Broadcast WAV files on both platforms as they are time stamped and will import to the correct position.
That and standard MIDI files are about the best you can do.

  • Logic & Reason

Guys - I'm using Kontakt in addition to the EXS, and am thinking about getting Reason.
From my research, it seems both the EXS and Kontakt can read a decent amount of reason files (rex, etc), but not all (redrum for example). I'm also presuming reason will be able to handle its native formats a little easier than the other two samplers.
I like the idea of having even more sounds available to me, so Reason seems like a decent way to do it. In other words, I plan on getting reason and using it basically like a software instrument/sound module.
    Some questions -
    1. I understand you have to rewire reason, and then fiddle around with settings to get it to have no latency in logic - after doing this, will I be able to use it in the way I've described above, like a sound module/soft synth with easy access to dialing up new sounds?
    2. Is my 'reasoning' off base about having more sounds available to me by getting reason? Or am I just showing that I don't know enough about Kontakt and the EXS? ; )
    3. How is the rex file player in Reason? Does it do enough that I won't need to buy recycle down the road?
Thanks - any other advice appreciated.

EXS can handle rex files excellently. On the other hand, I have not had much success using Kontakt to do that. However, one cool benefit of Logic is that you can preview any rex file in Logic's file browser, and it will play back at the current project tempo. Then, if you like it, you can just drag it in to the Arrange window and choose how you'd like it converted. To me, converting to an apple loop is the easiest/best choice, and Logic does it flawlessly and painlessly.
Thus, unless you want to play with the slices and process them individually, you don't need Reason or any sampler at all to just put them in your project in Logic.
On the other hand, if you want to edit slices, process slices, change their order, etc., then I suggest doing it either with Reason or EXS.
I like the idea of having even more sounds available to me, so Reason seems like a decent way to do it. In other words, I plan on getting reason and using it basically like a software instrument/sound module.
Actually, a software instrument is the primary application of Reason. It happens to also have a great Rex player (DrRex) since they invented the rex format.
    Some questions -
    1. I understand you have to rewire reason, and then fiddle around with settings to get it to have no latency in logic - after doing this, will I be able to use it in the way I've described above, like a sound module/soft synth with easy access to dialing up new sounds?
Yes, you have to fiddle around with the settings in Logic, but it is explained well in the Logic Pro 8 User Manual starting on page 249. Once you do it a few times, it will be easy and you won't view it as fiddling around anymore.
    2. Is my 'reasoning' off base about having more sounds available to me by getting reason? Or am I just showing that I don't know enough about Kontakt and the EXS? ; )
Your reasoning is correct. You'll get a TON of new sounds and synthesizers to play with if you get Reason. However, if you have Logic and Kontakt 3, you already have a TON of sounds at your disposal.
Reason 4 does give you a few things that are much better than Logic's implementation though.
The Reason Regroove mixer opens up new and easy ways of quantizing. The Reason arpeggiator is easy and powerful.
    3. How is the rex file player in Reason? Does it do enough that I won't need to buy recycle down the road?
The Rex player in Reason (DrRex) is the standard by which other rex players are measured. Propellerheads invented this format!
Not only does it give you access to slices, but it also has built-in filters that can be applied per slice. This lets you easily do things like tweak only beat 2 and 4, but nothing else.
Thanks - any other advice appreciated.
    I hope this helped.

  • Logic & Reason Adapted for Digidesign

Like many others I use Logic with Mbox. The Mbox package included Reason 2. Logic and Reason works well, which means, I can here Redrum trough Rewire and the sync works well. Therefor I opend the Logic template "Rewire - one slave"
But what I can´t find out is, how to get the SamplerInstruments and Synths like NN19 to work. I also searched this forum and tried some suggestions, but it don´t worked.
Maybe someone also had this probleme and could help me. Or even better, could share or mail me an template that will work with my logic 7.0.1.
    Thanks Martin

When you put the NNXT in your rack and load a sound, you can't hear anything? Are the NNXT audio outs going into your Reason mixer, or the Reason hardware interface at the top of the rack? Either could work. You should have 64 channels from Reason to Logic....

  • Connect Logic Pro and Cubase on PC?

    Hi Guys
I want to connect my Macbook PRo using Logic 8 as the Seq to use the patch/sound/library/samlples/VSTi from my Cubase 3 on another PC, any way to do this? Thanks!

Apologies for the hijacking, but does anybody know if a similar thing is possible if instead of the program running on a separate PC it is a virtual one running on the mac (i.e. using parallels or fusion)?

hi i wanted to know what is good for a good audio recording in amongs cubase sx 3.1 or logic pro 7.2.for midi i am going to continue with the logic for the audio i have to think..currently using dp 4.6.have bought a quad..if we compare all the fetures of cubse sx and logic 7 except midi..but incling the plugins which can be good for audio recordin..and also the new sos says that cubase sx 3.1 uses 4 processors wil cubase sx 3.1 will beeter than logic 7.2 for auduio recordin i do songs and mainly banground scores as well....

    Hi Amar
I guess this is a bit of tricky one . but i reckon Logic if you are comfy with it. I have been using cubase and nuendo . Nuendo is option you could look at for audio . coz supposedly it has Nuendo has the best summing amplifier algorithm
    Logic 7 is almost there.

  • Logic express vs Cubase ?

I'm a guitarist doing fairly basic multi-track recording at home. I used to use Cubase on my PC. Now on the Mac, I use Garage Band, but would like an application that is a bit more powerful.
Regarding Cubase vs Logic express, are they similar? pros and cons? are they compatible?
    Thanks

Logic and Cubase are fairly similar as DAWs. They do same things actually. And they are not entirely compatible (one cannot swap projects between these two programs). As a guitarist you'd find LE9 an awesome DAW. And it's actually cheaper than Cubase.

  • Anybody else using Logic, Reason, and Waves SSL.... with this issue?

    got a major problem.
i got a session where it's mostly Logic Audio Inst and Reason Rewired Inst (going to individual Audio Inst tracks).
when i apply the Waves SSL EQ to a Rewired Inst under Live Mode (for Rewire Behavior), it works fine. but after adding a few more inst and plugz, 1 of the 4 processor (indicated in System Performance) maxes out. which is kind of f'd up because the other processors are almost hitting rock bottom.
so i go and change from Live Mode to Playback Mode. this way, the processor doesn't overload. the processors look like they're distributed more properly this way, tho there's always one that spikes higher than others.
problem is, when i go to Playback Mode, i get this weird bug. it actually sounds like a bug. seriously. it goes "blip blip bleeep, blip etc etc etc".
and the blips don't come in at a constant rate, it's at a random rate. but it's constantly there... does that make sense? in a way it sounds like a short bursts of feedback. very annoying, cuz you can hear it, and you can even see it on the fader meter of the Reason Inst. doesn't happen to all Reason Inst channels, in most cases just one.
the obvious work-around is to use a different EQ (other than Waves, cuz it'll do the same for Channel EQ as well). but this is just a band-aid, not really solving the problem.
    so the issues are:
-Waves SSL and Rewire doesn't behave nicely together under Playback Mode, and gets weird "blip" feedbacks
-Logic and Rewire doesn't behave nicely together under Live Mode, where it maxes out only 1 of the 4 processors.
this also happened back when i was using a G5 also, same Logic 7.2.3/Reason 3.0.5/Waves SSL 1.2.
anybody else encounter a similar problem? i can provide more info if necessary.
i even talked to Propellerheads, but they haven't gotten around to buy Waves SSL, so can't recreate the same problem despite of me sending them the session files....
    PLEASE HELP!!!

i even talked to Propellerheads, but they haven't gotten around to
buy Waves SSL, so can't recreate the same problem despite of me
    sending them the session files....
I'm sure they'll have an iLok to install the demo to. It won't behave any differently from the full version, as it's just a different license. Maybe they were just fobbing you off?
As a workaround until it's sorted, can you export all the audio from Reason as regular audio so you don't have to use Reason?

  • Rewire: Logic + Live then Logic + Reason = No Sound

    Hey,
Can anyone explain to me, why if I open up Ableton Live 5.2 to work on something it then has an effect on my ability to rewire Logic and Reason together.
For example, I wanted to timestrech a track, so I opened it in Ableton, did the work and rendered the finished vocal as a wav file. I then closed Ableton and opened Logic, then reason to put them into rewire mode (reported as being in rewire mode in reason).
The problem is I only get sound from Logic, no sound comes through from Reason.
The only way I can tell to fix this problem is to delete all the rewire files in the library folders.
Can anyone help me out with this annoying and ongoing problem??

This is an annoying one, we know...
It definitely sounds like your Logic environment is not set up correctly to get the audio from Reason.
    Please verify your settings here:
    http://www.propellerheads.se/
clicking on ReWire (it's in the left side bar).
Is there a specific reason why you want that "finished vocal" run through Reason?
Since you saved said file as .wav, why not use "Audio Import" in Logic and put it in your Logic song arrange window?

  • Upgrade to Cubase 4 or get Logic Pro 8?

Apple makes Logic. But does that make Logic any more CPU/RAM/System efficient than Cubase 4?
I own Cubase SX 2 which I cannot install on my Macbook Pro -not intel compatible and I'm trying to find out whether I should upgrade to 4.1 or sell SX 2 and get Logic 8.
I've been using Ableton Live for a couple of years and still is but I am considering a more full featured sequencer since I never really finish anything In Live 6. I have many old Cubase arrangement files but they don't mean that much to me. Is Cubase running efficiently on a Mac? I don't mind learning how to use Logic and if I buy it I'm also getting Soundtrack Pro 2 and I do need an audio editor.
Is Logic Pro 8 that much better as a sequencer than Live's arrangement view/time line sequencer?
What should I choose, Logic 8 or Cubase 4? I'd like to hear your opinions. Thanks

If you use a lot of MIDI, or own a multi-port MIDI interface, you would be better off with Cubase. For some still-unexplained reason, Logic merges all the MIDI ports into one, forcing you to re-assign each port to a different MIDI channel. This is rather annoying. It also means that you cannot record more than 16 MIDI tracks at once with Logic (Cubase allows you to record an unlimited number of MIDI tracks at once). However, Cubase limits you to 99 software instruments at once. It is also very easy to open a MIDI port on a track in Cubase. Logic has a complicated method of re-assigning channels.
    Logic 16. Cubase 99.
The audio editing is also much better in Cubase. Plus, Cubase has 32-bit (true-tape) recording capability.
As far as your question about CPU/RAM/System efficient, Logic would win in that category. You would need a very fast computer to use Cubase effectively. If you are using a laptop, or a slow computer, Logic might be a better choice.
    To answer your other question:
Why would you choose Cubase 4? Less limitations. Better MIDI and Audio features. Easier to use interface.
Why would you choose Logic Pro 8? No Dongle/encryption to slow performance. (Better system/CPU performance.) Better support. High-quality audio engine (almost as good as Cubase). A better alternative to Cubase than DP.

  • Cant rewire reason 5 to Logic 9 after Mavericks update

    Hi there,
I am using Logic Pro 9.1.8 and Reason 5 and was having no trouble rewiring Reason to Logic untill I updated to Mavericks OS, after which Reason simply doesn't rewire to Logic anymore. I tried running Logic in 32 bit as well as 64 bit mode but it has't made any difference - I start Logic and then Reason (normal rewiring proceedure), but Reason is running independent and not rewiring.
Any ideas what I could do to fix this?

I'm the editor of the macProVideo.com Hub - where you can find loads of free useful tips and tutorials on Logic, Reason, After Effects, Pro Tools, etc.
