Logic Sample Editor Functions and Network Home Areas

Hi,
I'm an IT technician at an FE college so do not know much about Logic. We have network home areas (Snow Leopard Server). We have a problem in the music department where students can't access the Sample Editor functions (they are all greyed out apart from Change Gain). Now if I log on as a network user and create a project on the local HD everything is fine. Move that project to my Network Home Area Desktop and the functions are greyed out! I have checked file permissions and the network user has full access to all files in the project in both instances.
Any help much appreciated.
Dom.

Oh. And I thought that you, if anyone, could sort out this issue. Yes, Logic does not like networks at all.

  • STPro as Logics sample editor.

I like to use STPro as Logics sample editor in certain cases. However, one thing has me stumped.
Does anyone know how to get STPro to show up the sample in beats, when I (launch external sample editor' in LogicPro?
I have the preferences set to show 'Beats' in new documents, but it always defaults to min:secs....
Anyone have any ideas...? I would love to be able to edit accurately in beat mode.

The beat option only seems to be available from the multi-track vantage point. For instance you can't add a beat marker in the sample editor - the tool is greyed out - and if you've set some b-markers in the multi-track view, they're not visible any longer in the editor view. And yes, this drastically limits the usefulness of SoundTrack when setting up audio loops for example, and, of course, this is not discussed in the manual.

  • IPhoto '11 and network home directories

    Hi,
We are using iPhoto '11 and network home directories which live on a SMB file server. When a user attempts to run iPhoto they get the following error: "Warning. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
iPhoto '09 works fine in our environment, and if the library is relocated to the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared directory it can be loaded. This appears to be a new bug in iPhoto '11. Am i correct?

iPhoto was never designed for a network environment. It's low end user application. If you want an image management application this is designed from networks and multi users you'll need a DAM (digital asset management) application like Media Expression.
You can learn about EM and other DAM apps at The DAM Forum where those applications are discussed and evaluated by professional photographers.
You can request adding a new feature to iPhoto via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

    Step by step:
    1. On your main vi Front Panel, create your boolean indicator.
    2. On the block diagram, right click the new boolean indicator and select Create - Reference.
    3. On sub-vi front panel, create boolean indicator (or use one that is already created).
    4. On sub-vi front panel, create a reference (Controls Palette - Refnum - Control Refnum).
    5. Right click on the newly created Refnum and select Select Vi Server Class - Generic - GObject - Control - Boolean. The refnum label changes to BoolRefnum.
    6. On sub-vi block diagram, create Property Node (Functions - Application Control - Property Node). Find the BoolRefnum and move it close to the new Property Node.
    7. Wire the BoolRefnum to the reference input of the property node.
    8.
Right click on the property node and select Change to All Write.
    9. Move mouse to point to Visible inside property node box, left click and select Value.
    10. Wire the boolean indicator from step 3 to the Value input of the property node.
    11. On sub-vi front panel, right click on icon and select Show Connector.
    12. Click on empty connector spot then click on the new BoolRefnum. Save your sub-vi.
    13. On main vi block diagram, connect refernece created in step 2 to the new connector terminal of sub-vi.

  • Sample editor 'functions' greyed out.

    Hi there,
I'm having a problem in Logic 8 whereby all the functions in the sample editor are disabled. I'm pretty new to logic but i'm getting to grips with it, just can't figure out why i can't use any of the functions

They are greyed out because of a possible lack of manual reading....while that's the most likely cause a secondary problem might be not applying basic computer use skills that you already know.
In most every program what must you do to data to be able to edit?
You have to select it... it looks like from the pic you've posted that you have not selected the audio, usually it comes up selected (darker color) when you open the sample editor.
Either drag select the area you wish to work on or use the Apple key in combination with the A key to select all.
This is basic editing, from a long time Logic user...trust me, reading the manuals can provide many benefits... there's always secondary information included along with the info you're looking for. Logic's manual has a large chapter on editing audio in the sample editor. It's a good read.

  • Flash Drives and Network Homes

I have a problem that is driving me nuts. If a kid logs into an OpenDirectory-based network home on an older iMac (white, 2007) and plugs in a flash drive, the drive mounts no problem to their desktop. If the same kid logs into the same account on a newer iMac (aluminum, 2009), the flash drive does not mount. Both iMacs are running 10.5.8. Even better (and consequently why I'm posting here), the flash drive in question mounts under the newer iMac when logged into a local machine account. The flash drive is formatted for FAT-32, I am out of ideas, and the students are getting angry. Help!

    Hi Russell
Perhaps there are two computer groups? One for older (white) and one for Newer (alu) iMacs? Managed Preferences for Media Access on the older iMacs is defined to allow USB Memory Stick access and is not allowed on the newer iMacs?

  • Issue with Windows Explorer search function and network shares.

    Hello all,
I hope all is well, I am having a very odd issue.
One user when they access a particular network drive, and try to use the explorer search function it prompts the following error
    Runtime error
    Program:
This application has requested the runtime to terminate in a unusual way. Please contact application team for support.
I have checked the event viewer on both the user machine and server hosting the share, not events show up regarding the issue.
I have tried with the user machine in safe mode with networking, and the issue still occurs
It of course is not telling which application or program is causing this.
I have confirmed all windows updates are up to date.
I have gone to the windows search in services and swapped the 1 for a 0, that opened up three of the four network drives for search
the last one is still causing this error.
User computer is windows 7 professional 64 bit
server is windows server 2012 64 bit.
I am at a total loss as to why this is happening on two machines out of ten.
any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Cheers
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
What operation did the user act and how to use the explorer search function to cause the issue? Please check if the issue still exists after the user does the same action locally.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Spotlight and network home directories

I've run into a recurring problem in which Spotlight stops working--entirely or in part--for my network user accounts.
Often, I'll notice that the Mail.app search feature no longer works. Interestingly, the most recent failure was that the "entire message" option would produce no results while "subject", "to", and "from" would search my mail successfully.
This has occured on other user accounts hosted by the same machine. Some users have found that their entire spotlight system (menu bar search, etc) fails to function.
Last time I just went into the server and chown/chgrp all the user accounts. For some reason, this forced spotlight to re-index and the spotlight issues went away for about a month. Now they are beginning to return.
I'm a bit confused by this. Any suggestions?

  • After Annotation PDF on Preview, lost search function and some words are replaced by weird characters

    This is the original
The next one is what it look after I highlighted few sentences.
Apparrently, the search function lost as well

I am not familiar with Skim, but I use Adobe Reader all the time and it is quite fast on my Mac mini. Perhaps not as fast as Preview but still quite acceptable. If it is running that slow on your Mac I would suspect either you are low on RAM or perhaps the file you are reading is ill-formed. Are these problems occurring on more than one PDF from more than one original source? Do all PDFs scroll slowly or just some?

  • AppleTV sync and Network home directories

I am unable to see the AppleTV device in more than one location, using the same login account.
I have an Xserve that contains user accounts in Open Directory. This Xserve also manages user home directories. This allows me to log on to any machine with the same account and get to my home folder. Do not confuse this with what I believe is called Mobile accounts where the home directory is copied locally to each machine and is kept in sync with the server. Once I log out, nothing remains on the client machine.
So, turned on my AppleTV, logged into my Xserve since it was not being used. This account is also not "local" to the Xserve, i.e. not under /Users/. Launched iTunes, saw the AppleTV, typed in the 5 digit code, and watch the AppleTV sync. OK, no issues. Logged off the Xserve. Logged onto the desktop using the same account I just used on the Xserve. Launched iTunes, no AppleTV listed. Not cool!
Is AppleTV restricted to syncing to one computer, one account, one ip address, or one MAC address? If it is one computer how does it know the different machines?

Thanks folks for the comments but I don't believe I am coming across correctly.
Patience this is a bit compplicated
    Infrustructure:
    1. Xserve1 running Open Directory, managing multiple client computers and users to include user home directory location via Workgroup Manager.
    2. Xserve2 handling 7 Tera Bytes of home directory storage. Repeat 7 Tera Bytes of home directory storage.
    3. Many Mac desktops running 10.4.10. Only one local account, we'll call him local-admin on any of these machines which is the local admin account for that machine. Absolutely no other information for users resides on these machines.
When User1 logs onto Desktop1, Desktop1 makes a query for information from Xserve1. Xserve1 response saying the login is correct and that User1's home directory is located on Xserve2. User1 is now logged into Desktop1. Open a Finder window and if you did not know any better you would think User1 was a local user to Desktop1 because you see in Finder on the left column you have the standard items appear such as a "Home" icon next to the username, Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, etc display. Click on anyone of them and you are in the proper place. User1 loggs off of Desktop1.
User1 now logs onto Desktop2 for whatever reason. Maybe Desktop1 was being used by User34. Desktop2 repeats what Desktop1 did. Makes the call to Xserve1, mounts the home from Xserve2. If you were to go back to Desktop1 you would find no trace of User1 except maybe in log files. The only user listed in MachintoshHD -> Users or in Unix terms /Users would be local-admin. So User1 is the only user and the iTunes library located in User1's home directory is the only library being dealt with.
    On to AppleTV:
User1 loggs into Desktop1. Types in code to lock Desktop1 as the syncing source for User1's library. What was not initially understood was AppleTV also is locking Desktop1 as the streaming source for User1's library. You will see in a moment how I found this out. User1 selects the Photos to sync, turns off Movie syncing, selects Music etc. Sync finishes. AppleTV can play content can switch to streaming source and play the videos. User1 logs off Desktop1 and AppleTV acknowledges this by greying out User1's library as a streaming source.
User1 logs into Desktop2. User1 notices AppleTV still shows User1's library is greyed put as a streaming source. Shouldn't that no longer be greyed out since it is the same library? OK, lets add Desktop2 as a New Additional Streaming source. Types in the code that AppleTV displays on User1's library on Desktop2. The Sources screen on AppleTV now changes slightly. The new streaming source is added below a white line. The AppleTV source is still white letters and the original streaming source above the line is still greyed out. The new streaming source is selected and content is viewable. User1 logs off of Desktop2. The new streaming source greys out as expected.
User1 logs back into Desktop1 to sync some more photos to the AppleTV. Desktop1 is used since that is the original syncing computer. iTunes is launched. User1 waits, and waits, and waits. The AppleTV device never appears back in iTunes. Checking the AppleTV, all content is gone. User1 logs back onto Desktop2 to see if streaming still works. Nope, streaming no longer works.
Spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Apple support. Nice bunch of folks. Spoke with multiple tiers of AppleTV support and even had a gentleman on from the Enterprise Division on the phone. They are elevating this up higher and promise to get back with me. Hoping.
    Complicated, yes.
My thoughts on how to solve this, don't lock the device to a computer, lock the device to an account for syncing. Also, don't automatically lock a streaming source when locking a syncing source.

  • I have an ipad2 and logic pro 9 but my iPads GarageBand exports but 1. Logic cannot find it and the files are hidden so I don't know where they are ,  I've looked all over my iTunes structure which is easy since I just installed everything and it's empty

So yea title says it all
Logic doesn't see the GarageBand files and neither do I .... So I reattempt saving it and my iPad sees the files there so .... They're there
But you shouldn't need GarageBand to access it on my Mac IF I OWN LOGIC PRO

    Hi
With your iPad connected, open iTunes & select the iPad
Select the Apps tab, and scroll down to File Sharing.
Select the GB songs you wish to get onto the Mac and click "Save to"
By default, these seem to go to <User> Documents, but you could save them anywhere (Check where you setup is saving them).
    Open Logic, and then File:Open
Navigate to wherever you saved your GB songs to, and select one. Open it
Logic prompts you to save this new project somewhere... done.

  • Sample editor functions greyed (checked previous discussions)

    Hi All,
I have the same problem many have reported earlier. I tried the tips given bouncing in place, ensuring write access is there. but still the same problem. Please find the screenshots.

    Hi.
You have imported audio that is in surround format. You can tell by the icon at the end of the file name.
If you actually want it to be surround, I don't have an answer.
If you don't want surround, you would need to convert it to  stereo file. Make the track be stereo using the mode switch under the meter (it is currently set to surround), bounce in place again, and you should see the stereo icon instead of the surround.
    Bingo!

  • Sample editor headaches.

i find the sample editor clumsy and frustrating...
i have opened a garageband project into logic. now i want to move an audio part so i copy it and paste it.
but in the sample editor, i see ExTrA audio? this must be what i had trimmed off of the beginning and DelEtEd?
but i deleted it so why does it exist ??
(oh yeah and before my rant; howcome if i copy an audio event and past it, then when i change the copy, it changes the original too.
like is that what you mean by your destructive editing? yet it saves junk i want to delete???? what. its so stupid). whose idea was that. useless dumb.
why is everything about a mac always so wierd. i only like it cos it doesnt blow up yet and my pc does.
what is destructive editing then someone please tell me?
because i have to say i am SICK and tired of all these "precautions" and safety features all software has now but i still lose data. these precautions ever serving me any use or save me anything... no.
    nothign but a pain and
how much hard drive space am i going to WaSte over the Years, with all this JUNK i wanted to DELETE but i never know if its gone or just hidden from ME on MY hard drive that I went to the store and brought home and i own it, not logic and its stupid safety precautions.
    so there.
also, having sample playback seperate from the project playback would be cool as a Non-default option.. but i think it should be more like garageband by default.
also, if youre gonna make it tuck the trimmed pieces away why call it destructive and why not just rip of tracktion a step further and put the nifty little fader things up in the corner in the arrage area, right? cos those are cool and i use em all the time, unlike oh screensets for example.
cos as it is.... im just frustrated and confused.
there is audio in my project that i dont even REMEMBER RECORDING and it pops up and i have to
    STOP
    being
    CREATIVE
    and
    PRODUCTIVE
and instead i must begin to be here askign for help and offering my constructive criticizm.
so tell me, is this to do with importing from garageband?
but garageband is suposed to delete what i delete too. destructive.
so WHY am i HERE asking for help about audio i obviously wanted GONE
so i could focus on what i WANT to hear.
now im all like oooh, what is it?? is it important?
is... it like... what is it? why is it there? if i get rid of it will i find out it was something i wanted to keep and not junk like i thought
man this is so frustrating, just when your pc blows up too.
grrr. grrr. grr. get it? boo to sample editor!
everything else seems cool tho. im getting efficient with midi editing but
i am almost AFRAID to even touch the sample editor, yikes.
its gonna go wrooong and i will be like ok great leave it up to me to blow up a mac.... with all those funky comercials on tv.
and i will accidentally delete a wicked guitar solo and it will be gone.
but i got this junk i dont even know where it came from. boo hoo hoo hoo hoo.

    Hi,
well, it took me some time to try and understand your actual questions...
First of all, the concept behind the arrange window and audio editor is really very smart and "logical", but if you misunderstand this concept, all kinds of strange things start happening, because your brain and mouse clicks will speak another language than Logic Express....
Logic Express is a high end application, for people that find Garageband too limiting. The consequence is that it's more complicated, simply because it has to do complicated things. But the guys who programmed Logic had excellent reasons to build it the way they did, believe me.
Now, if you record something, Logic will simply make an audio file like any audio software on any computer. You'll be able to see this file in the audio bin.
Besides that, you'll see a region appear on the track that you used to record the audio on. This region is a "building block", and it only contains a reference to the actual audio. So, if you take the scissor tool, and cut the region in 2 pieces, for instance, you get one building block that will play the first half of your audio file, and another one that plays the second half. And if you use the crossfade tool (see page 359 of the LE 8 User Manual) on a region, it will not do anything to your original audio material, but simply gradually turn down the volume. This really great, because you may want to use a whole piece of audio in one verse, and only a part of it in another. You simply copy the region, mess around with the copy, while nothing happens to the first region. That's non-destructive editing. So, most things you do with regions in the arrange window are non-destructive, and therefore not dangerous.
Now to the Sample Editor. Everything you do hear will have an effect on any region using this audio, so this is destructive editing, and therefore dangerous. So, if you want to repeat something in your song, you almost certainly won't do it here!!! You only should use the sample editor for things that are wrong in your original recording. Suppose you played a wrong pitched note. You can use "Time & Pitch Machine" to repair this one note, and it will be the right note in all regions using this audio.
The audio bin is the place where you can find all audio you recorded for your song. So, if you can't find back something you recorded, look there. Just a hint: give audio tracks in the arrange window a proper name before you hit the record button, and it's much easier to find your audio files back.
    Hope this helps....
    Kind regards,
    Jaap
