Logic & Tascam FW-1884

Hi all. Does anyone know why some of the key combinations described by Apple in the Logic Express Control Surfaces document do not work?
Specifically, Apple clearly states that SET + IN on the FW-1884 sets the IN point. This doesn't work.
Off the top of my head, CLR SOLO & ALL SAFE don't work either.
Why is that so? Which FW-1884 unit did they have when they wrote this?
Thanks.

OK, but how can you do that when, for example, "ALL SAFE" or "CLR SOLO" can't be found in the Key Commands window (through search)? Also, Logic recognizes a button press as "FW-1884: CLR SOLO" but not Shift+CLR SOLO (they are interpreted as SysEx messages)? The weird part is that Logic's presets for the FW1884 do recognizes SHIFTs and ALTs (those which are built in).
Thanks.

  • Logic Pro 7.2 and Tascam FW-1884 Not Working

I recently upgraded to Logic Pro 7.2 and I'm using a Tascam FW-1884 as my audio interface / Control Surface. Everything was working fine in 7.1.1, but now it doesn't work correctly. When I press buttons and faders on the Tascam I see MIDI information changing in Logic, but not in any of the correct places. When I click on the screen controls in Logic the Tascam does reflect the same on the board, but not the other way around? I updates the Tascam Plug-In (.bundle) file, the Control Panel, and even the Firmware. Still does not work. The faders go up on boot-up and down when I quit the program, but that is it. Any help would be greatly appreciated? I'm using a Mac G5, dual 2.7ghz processors, and 2.5 gigs in RAM. My gut is telling me it's something with the upgrade, but maybe others have resolved the problem without reprogramming every control one by one.

    Mr. Walden,
I recently switched to Macintosh and am learning to use Garage Band. I have an 1884, as do you, and I plan to invest in Logic Express. Do you have any comments or suggestions concerning the marriage between Logic and the 1884?

  • Will the Tascam FW-1884 work with Logic Pro X?

    Hello,
I notice that the new Logic is 64 bit only and yet the Tascam FW-1884 is specifically listed as a supported control surface.
Tascam has not released 64 bit drivers for this device!  Can anyone shed any light on this?  Will it work only as a control surface and not an audio interface?  Is the documentation in error?  Anyone have this working with Logic Pro X?
    Thanks,
    Lyford Rome

    Lyford,
Again, in regards to hardware... it is not about LPX compatibility.. It is about compatibility with the OS X version and it's CoreAudio... Once you 'get' that point then everything else makes sense...
Tascam are notorious about leaving owners of "End of Line" products 'high and dry' when OS X is updated... and as you have found... the 1884 is not compatible with Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and likely will never be so... because Tascam will not be releasing Mountain Lion drivers for it.. so, it is not something you can use with LPX, which requires Mountain Lion 10.8.4 as a minimum requirement.
As an aside, Apple have acknowledged they make an error in simply using the LP9 Hardware compatibility chart for LPX (as LP9 could be used with earlier OS X versions for which there were drivers for the 1884 for example) and have said they will be issuing an updated version "in the near future"......

  • Tascam FW-1884/Maverick

Apple has stated that the Tascam FW-1884 will work with Maverick. Has anyone had any sucess?

    Hey there jcb7r,
thanks for the infos, I forgot to mention that I'm using one of iMac's latest version, I won't be able to follow the FW bus route (unintentional pun) unless there are stand alone FW buses to connect to the iMac, which I doubt (or I'm not able to find)............regarding Tascam drivers, dodgy as they were (are) I never had problems using the FW 1884 with my old iMac/Snow Leopard/Logic Pro 9, besides, it was a pretty stable setup; mind you, I just felt the need to upgrade the whole lot........which I don't regret but for the Tascam (that ultimately has clean and transparent preamps with good headroom).
Anyway, the FW 1884 is still listed in Logic X controllers but seems to be an Apple print mistake; and since we're on the official Apple Communities Forum I wonder why no rep is chiming in on the subject (which is not just mine or yours).
Tascam (or Frontier) is on another boat altogether, fair enough they stop producing and deem "obsolete" one of their products, but the FW 1884 is at least a semi-pro machine, lettin' it go without support (Mac) doesn't seem a very "pro" move, nor a customer caring one.......sorry for ranting.....
Back on topic, I want to believe there must be a way to sort things out other than being forced to stay behind or boot one's system @ 32bit (an option that's no more available on newest machines/systems); I'd just love being able to use it at least as a controller while taking advantage of 64bit structure and ram addressing; really crossing my fingers here, even though I suspect I'd have to resign sooner than later.
I'm willing to have another go at it, I search the net every now and then to see if somebody's has come up with a solution; I'll report whatever positives should I encounter.
Please be so kind to reply on this forum once you've taken the Mavericks step.
    Have a nice day

  • Final Cut Pro and Tascam FW-1884

I trying to configure the Tascam FW-1884 to work with Final Cut. Currently I can get the faders and pan controls to work by selecting:
    Control Surface Type: Mackie Control
Input Connection: Tascam FW-1884 Control Port
Output Connection: Tascam FW-1884 Control Port
The control surface is connect via firewire, I'm not using any additional MIDI connections in or out of the computer.
I would like to be able to access more of the buttons and features of the control surface from within FCP. What is the correct way to configure the two. Is levels and pan the only functions that will work with FCP?
Any help is great appriciated. I've searched online and cannot find any documentation on this topic.
    thanks,
    dk.

Just talked with apple support again. It seem the functionality I am getting is all that is available at this time. I was just expecting to be able to do more by assigning buttons for short cuts and having eq control etc. Maybe there is a third party plug in to expand FCP's control surface abilities or apple will include greater support on a future version.
Let me know if anyone has additional advise or knowledge on the subject.
    thanks,
    dk.

  • Logic 7.1.1 with Tascam FW-1884 (1.5.0)

    hi
can anyone please provide instructions for configuring the FW-1884 to work with logic 7.1.1? I have tried the latest firmware (173/49) and drivers (1.5.0) from tascam.de but i cannot get it to reliably talk with logic 7.1.1. Will logic 7.2 solve this problem? The Logic 7.2 addendum document ("new features in logic pro 7.2") does not specifically mention the FW-1884.
Also- when i have the FW-1884 connected to my G4 desktop, it triggers the "1884 Manager" application to launch-switching it to the midi programming tab. It repeatedly does this. Perhaps this unit is a dud?
I previously had the FW-1884 working nicely with logic 6.x without problem so i am surprised to be now having these problems.

Hav you installed the "Logic OSX Control Surface V1.10 " plugin? It is available at
    http://www.tascam.com/Products/FW1884_downloads.html
It allows the fw 1884 to be used with logic platinum 6 or newer.

I am also having similar issues. There are several buttons on the console that do not respond, even after repeated installation of the drivers and software. I am sorry I cannot help, but I wanted you to know that it's not just you! I have been limping by without some of the functionality that I gladly paid for, but I am not happy that it is crippled this way.
Just for the record, I cannot use the CLEAR SOLO/F4 function, I cannot set IN/OUT points with the 1884, nor can I adjust the CHANNEL EQ HIGH or HIGH-MID without holding the SHIFT key in conjuction with the LOW-MID or LOW EQ buttons. Is this what you are having issue with?

  • Tascam FW 1884 solution...

Hi guys, this may or may not help for those of you with issues with the Tascam FW1884 Mixing desk/control surface/audio interface.
I use mine for my live stage show, so I need it to be as reliable as possible.
I went down the whole route under 10.4 of 'downgrading' my firewire (as it said to on the Tascam Website) and all that nonsense... but under leopard it seems to switch on and connect 90% of the time.
There is still the issue under Logic 8 of the bank lights not working correctly (only bank 1 led ever shows) but I read in the 1.6.0 tascam Mac OSx driver that this will be fixed in a later version.
The problems I was having with the desk this time around was when switching back from editing an EXs intrument or Midi in the piano roll to the main arrange window, the play light would stop working, the mute led's wouldn't light up, and bizarrly the audio meter levels in logic itself failed to register noise, eventhough the track played correctly. I've still no idea what this is, or what causes it, but low and behold it started doing it when the desk wasn't even plugged in!
My all time problem however, has been when changing one of the rotary encoders to change an effect, instead of pan, Logic suddenly groups banks in tracks numbering 9 or 10, instead of 8. Which means when you switch banks on the desk, you get tracks 1 - 8 on the first bank, and then something like tracks 11 - 18 on the second bank, and you can't actually access tracks 9 and 10 on the desk at all!
Well yesterday I stumbled on a solution to this...
Basically, I went to preferences, control surface, setup, and actually went to add a new Tascam FW1884. Logic added a new interface, Tascam FW1884 #2 alongside the original image. I then clicked across frmo one to the other and tried to look for differences, but couldn't find any.
I then deleted the new #2 I'd created, and low and behold, the original went back to fader banks of 8, and all my encoders still functioned the way I'd set them up!
So hope this helps with similar problems, I've no idea why it worked, maybe it just made the driver refresh or something.
Let me know if you have similar problems...
    Cheers
    Jellybass

    ALSO...
Once you've configured the tascam desk the way you wanted, you can actually go to Users/Library/Preferences/ and there is a Logic Control Surface preferances file, which has all the data of your surface.
Just back this up, then whenever your surface resets itself (i.e. if Logic crashes) you just drop this file back in the Preferences folder, and everythings back to the way you want it.
    Brilliant.

  • Tascam 1884 and Logic Express 7.2.3 - Master Fader Issue

I am currently having a slightly annoying problem between Logic Express and my Tascam 1884. Whenever I move the Master Fader on the Tascam, it changes the output of the currently selected track in Logic rather than Output 1-2 as it should and used to do.
I opened up the package contents of Logic to check the control surface drivers to see if there was a new version available. The one installed in Logic for the 1884 was labled as v1.0. I checked on the Tascam website and there was an Application Specific driver for Logic labled as v1.10. I downloaded this and installed it in place of the v1.0 driver and started Logic up. I was greeted with an error message stating that the Control Surface Driver was outdated. To see the actual error message, go here:
    http://flickr.com/photos/ephraim909/454973721/
Basically, it is stating that the "newer" version is outdated somehow. Is anyone else having this problem or have any idea what may be going on?
    15 in. PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25gb RAM

Thank you for the response. However, there are a few things wrong with that idea. First of all, that path that both you and Tascam specify to place the bundle is no longer applicable. The place where all the bundles are now is actually in the package contents of Logic Express, where I specified that I placed it. Secondly, there is something wrong with the driver beyond installing it in that, my control surface will no longer install or work. Therefore I cannot just ignore the error message because if I do, then nothing works at all. Once again I appreciate the suggestion, but that doesn't seem to help in my case.

  • Logic Pro 7_Tascam fw 1884 problem

Hi all i ask yours help!!
i have buyed a new Tascam fw 1884 audio firewire controller, i installed all drivers for use it with Logic Pro 7, but i have a problem when i use Logic and do play after bit seconds come out a written said me: "Error while i trying to sync MIDI and AUDIO" and also i don t feel nothing sound on normal analog outputs or Phones channel(while under there are AIF and Audio instruments file. WHY ????? maybe the drivers are too old for my system that is a OSx Tiger 10.4.1?? ahhh another detail, i Tunes now don t play, see the tracks in the list but the songs don t start more.....
Please help me i have much work to do and very bit time!!! Thnxxxx

My firt advice would of course be to see if you have the latest driver installed and, if not, install it.
But it sounds like your Firewire Bus is overloaded, hence the sound dropping out and the Audio/Midi sync problem. Am I right in guessing you also have a Firewire hard drive? I had the same problem with my M-Audio firewire interface, because i also had a firewire hard drive. I had the same problem as you did with itunes as well.
The way I solved that was by switching my hard drive to a spare USB port, and use only my Audio Interface on the firewire bus. It's a bit annoying if you bought a Firewire drive for the sake of speed, but it works fine.
    Hope that helped

  • Issues re Tascam FW-1082 & FW-1884 control surface - integration with FCP

The joint Tascam/Apple release put out in 2005 touting seamless compatibility between these two products (see below) turns out to be a gross exageration. Basic functions are conceivably compatible, but some do not work and there is a paucity of documentation available. The many buttons and controls on the Tascam's control surfaces are rendered useless. The consumer consumer has been wronged and these are not cheap products. Countless similar posts on this site backs me up on this.
I have the Tascam fw-1884, which has the same setup as the 1082. Have any of you been able to assign quick keys on the tascam using the keyboard customization tool in FCP? I've followed the example on Tascam's support site, but it does not seem to work.
Also, looking for more documentation/tutorials/consultants who can help me master all the features of the Tascam with FCP 5.
    Thanks,
    David
TASCAM interfaces now compatible with Apple®'s
    Final Cut® Pro 5 & Soundtrack Pro
MCP (Mackie Control Protocol) onboard Final Cut Pro 5 allows the use of external audio control surfaces to edit and manipulate audio
Montebello, CA—April 16, 2005—TASCAM's full line of FireWire audio control surfaces and interfaces are now compatible with Apple®'s Final Cut Pro 5 and Soundtrack Pro editing software with Apple's unveiling of the Final Cut® Studio production suite that includes the Final Cut Pro® 5 upgrade.
This major upgrade to the Apple's Emmy award-winning software means that Final Cut Pro 5 and Soundtrack Pro are now fully compatible with MCP (Mackie Control Protocol) devices, so you can use external audio control surfaces— including TASCAM's FW-1884 or FW-1082—to edit and manipulate audio more efficiently.
TASCAM's newest audio controller, the FW-1082, has nine motorized faders for adjusting audio levels during mix playback utilizing the revamped software. Editors can turn up a dialog line or reduce the music level during a voiceover section without clicking on breakpoints. Just grab a fader and go! The transport buttons can be used to start and stop playback in any editor that supports the Mackie Control or Mackie HUI. TASCAM's FW-1082 also has a MIDI fader mode that can be used in programs like Apple Motion 2 to adjust parameters in real-time during playback. And since it's an audio interface as well, producers can record voiceover and sound effects right in the edit suite with professional results.
The FW-1082 has four mic inputs, four line ins and S/PDIF digital in and out – all available at 96kHz. It features 10 inputs, including four balanced XLR mic inputs with phantom power. Eight channel strips each feature a 60mm touch-sensitive moving fader and select/solo/mute buttons, and a moving master fader.
For even more I/O and surface control, the FW-1884 offers 18-channels of inputs (eight analog and eight ADAT digital and two S/PDIF coaxial or optical), eight balanced XLR mic/line inputs with high-quality mic preamps and phantom power, plus nine 100mm motorized touch-sensitive faders.
    G4 dual processor 1.25mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCP 5.1.1

So after writing this question I closed the laptop, leaving the Tascam on & connected. Returned 30 mins later to see if anyone had replied (where are you all??!!), opened the laptop & the Tascam suddenly springs to lift, faders move & Soft LCD app shows activity correctly.
So, all appears to be OK although I don't really know why...!!

  • Logic Pro keeps (Not Responding) when launched or opening tracks...

Running logic Pro 7.2.1 on Power Mac G5 and using a Tascam FW-1884 control surface. During startup logic Pro hangs. Sometime if a song is opened via "Finder" it opens fine, but most times it just hangs. Also, not sure if this is related, but all logic pop-up window have this funky maroon color and its hard to read the text and button can't be seen at all.
    PLEASE help!!!!!! Production DOWN!
    -Chico

I had many problems with my Mac G5 2.7 refurb/Logic 7.2.1 when I first got it back in March. Although my problems were different than yours some things I remember doing that helped:
Trashing Logic's preferences fixed a situaution where my Logic windows were flashing randomly and Midi info was corrupted causing my Mackie Control Universal and my Korg Triton to freak out Logic.
Repairing disk permissions because 2 times Logic did not totally install correctly. Yes I reinstalled Logic at least 4 times to figure out why I was having freezeups system wide.
Working closely with Apple Care documenting my problems and finally getting my local Apple store in our local Mall to change out the motherboard, dual processors and optical drive. Yes essentially a new computer. Since that time I have not had one system wide freezeup (any wood around here)
    or major problem.
AT one point running the "Quick Test" from Apple's startup disc showed a Bad RAM chip. Again not related to you but running the test could show something.
I have 2 issues left to fix - Logic 7.2.1 for me has a transposition problem. Midi tracks will show up after I open a song file transposed down a step. The fix is to reboot Logic which is a pain. 2nd - Annoying beep coming from my power supply. Beep is audible in studio near the tower and is also in the audio chain coming out of speakers. No fix yet but again I'm working with Apple Care.

  • MacBook Pro 13" slow with Logic Studio.

I used to use a IMac 2.17 core 2 processor with 2 gigs ram running 10.5.8 for Logic with pretty much no problems. Decided to switch to my MacBook Pro 2.4 core 2 processor with 8 gigs ram running 10.6.8. Thought it would be at least the same speed if not faster. But it is actually slower in processing. Any ideas?
I also was using a Tascam FW 1884 with the IMAC and Logic. It was sweet. Now can't seem to use it with the MacBook. I think it is because of need to use a firewire cable which which has to switch from 800 to 400. Anyone else have this issue?

Yes - MOTU has Thunderbolt support:
    http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/828x
And I used MOTU products for years, albeit with almost exclusively digital mixers and digital decks.
Now I use Fireface 800's by RME (not Thunderbolt - Firewire [which you can get a TB adapter for]).
Reason: EXCELLENT driver stability, excellent audio A/D and D/A, and superb routing.
Both UA (makers of Apollo) and Apogee make exceptional products, but you will pay handily for their quality.

  • FW1884 EQ section doesn't work with Logic

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem getting the eq section to work on my tascam fw-1884. As far as I know I've followed the instructions in de manuals. I've inserted a channel EQ and then... nothing. Normally it should be possible to select a band and control freq., gain and Q.
As I look in the preferences -> controller assignments I can see that the controllers and buttons are recognised (not broken). But I don't know how to set it up to get it working.
Is there anyone that has experience with this? Or know what settings I have to change?
    G5 2x2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

In logic Preferences - Control Surfaces - Reset Defaults.
Again using the 1884 Manager I would also make sure you're in Native mode.
If none of that works you can find the control assigments window in that same preferences menu.
