Logic vs. express

I am new to digital recording. Currently using garageband with a cheap mixer I want to step up to express or logic. I want to do this for as little money as possible. The plan is to get a presonus firestudio package which includes the interface, MXL 990 & 991 mics, and M-Audio BX5A monitors. Does anyone have any comments criticism or suggestions? I am using garageband as just a tape recorder so to speak. I really don't use loops or synths. Allot of acoustic guitars and vocals. What is the difference sonically between Garageband, Express and Logic. oh yea, I have a macbook 13" lap top with tiger (I think ?) 10.4.11 2GHz intel core 2 duo, upgraded to 3 GB RAM

Depending on exactly how serious you are about "as little money as possible," you could simply get Express now and then upgrade to Studio--I believe it doesn't cost anything extra to do it in two steps like that. Express is quite a beefy program for the money. If you have any interest in programming beats, you may find Ultrabeat is worth $200 alone.
On the other hand, if you think you'll use loops and samples a lot, and you've got the extra $300 or so, might as well go straight to Studio because you'll get all the Jam Packs, which include quite a few loops and sampler instruments.
Oops, just saw that you don't use loops or synths. Might want to simply go for Express then--no penalty to upgrade later and for $200 it's a sick value. You'll get a lot more effects and production tools than I believe you have in Garageband (haven't used it since version 2). I think the main advantage for you of Studio would be the Space Designer reverb (which is very good), possibly Delay Designer, if you're into delay, and MainStage if you want to use Logic for live guitar effects. If money is short, I don't know that it makes sense for you to get Studio.

Try arming the audio tracks, select one of the tracks, then while holding down the shift key, select the midi track you want to record, arming the "r" on the midi track. Press "record".....

  • Which version is good for me to buy? Logic 8 express or Logic studio?

As I said in another post, I did till now all my work in Garageband. I compose mainly classical music for all kind of instruments, I don't do anything with electronic music, nor do I write pop kind of music. What I did in Garageband was setting up my tracks for the orchestra instruments, or solo piano, or chamber instruments, give them a pan position according to the Jam pack orchestra manual, and added at the end of the recording some reverb. The result is mostly good enough but especially for bigger instrumental groups, like orchestra or strings, I am not happy with the result.
This is the reason I am looking around in the Logic 8 world. I want to have better results. My question now is should I buy Logic Studio or Logic 8 express?
What is the difference between the two except the extra jam packs? I already have the Orchestra and voices jam pack and have many orchestral sound fonts that I bought in the past.
Mainstage is meant to be used for stage performence, right? I will never use something like that if it is, or maybe I didn't understand yet what Mainstage is about.
Studio effects: Logic 8 express does also have reverb effect, but are they good enough to make a good classical orchestral recording? Or do I need Studio for this?
Soundtrack Pro 2: A wave editor. This maybe I could use although I never felt the need for this in Garageband. Still, you never know.
SO what do I miss exactly when buying the express version?
Hope to get some advice on this.

Continue to use GarageBand until some new update for Logic Pro is released because upon opening your GarageBand 09 v5.0.1 projects into Logic Pro 8.0.2 you will receive the message, "Warning! This Project was created by a newer Logic Pro version. This may cause problems. Please update Logic Pro." After I hit "OK", a message says, "Logic Pro: Plug-in “Pedals” not available!, and then "Logic Pro: Plug-in “AmpSim2” not available!
Logic Pro is not for sampling right now because of my experience using it with my Mac Pro (Early 2008) 8 Core 3.2GHz, 32 Gig RAM, and Quadro FX 5600. I told the Apple store sales guy at the Apple Store that I needed comparable hardware and software for my new Mac Pro comparable to my Tascam GigaSampler PC workstation. He also had me get advice from the top trainer for Apple Logic Pro One to One training at their store. I made it clear my needs were to have the same capabilities and performance at that time that are possible with Tascam GigaSampler. The trainer said he sold his PC he used for sampling. So, in order to afford my Mac Pro, I sold my PC. Big mistake. Now I have not been able to continue working on many projects, now in the in-progress archive of mine, that I can not open anymore because Logic will not access even 3 Gigs of memory for projects with the EXS24 or any other sampler for that matter. With my Tascam Gigasampler accessing 16 Gigs was a breeze with no error messages. This enhancement will not be available until some update is released for Logic Pro above version 8.0.2.

  • Display function Reset in RPD logical column expression

    Hello All,
I want to reset display function like below in RPD's logical column expression (Its OBIEE 111171) . I am able to use reset RMIN value using "BY" syntax within obiee report but not able to apply same in RPD expression builder)
    RMIN (COLX BY COLB)
    Any idea ???
    Thanks in advance.
    -Devendra

Exactly. As I wrote, B contains some functions (mainly SUBSTR and CAST) that depend on other columns from the same dimension (all other colums are physical).
Funny thing is, when I drag D01.B into the analysis alone, it works all fine... Adding a measure also leads to the said error.

  • Yamaha Motif XS8 -  USB Midi to Logic 8 Express, anyone??

    Hi Everybody!
I have just purchased a Yamaha Motif XS8 to run with my Logic 8 Express.
The people at the store told me that I could set it up just like I had done with my midi controller through a USB straight into the Mac. But there is abso no sound, signal coming from the Motif.
How do I get the Motif to talk to the Mac via USB Midi?
The driver for the Motif is installed, and the mac can find it on the Mac's integrated Midi-setup. Cool. Fine.
    BUT...
Am I doing something wrong? Cause I can't get no signal from the Motif in Logic??
Can someone please explain how to set up a right set-up when you have a :
    Motif XS8 ->USB -> MacBook Pro/ With Logic 8-> USB- M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface?
I want to get to know the Motif with time and really "walk the walk" and learn as I go, but,
    some sound would be nice......
    Anyone??
Thanks in advance, anyone who can help......
    Best,
    Applecake

You are making 2 kinds of errors:
    1. you are recording in MIDI tracks whose task is to transmit all the data to external synths (just the way it's happening to you).
You have to use Intruments tracks and assign a Logic (or AU) instrument to each of them.
In this case the MIDI data will be forwarded to those and not to your Motif.
    2. the Motif USB interface is a MIDI interface; if you want to record the XS audio into Logic you will have to link the Firewire interface (that should be installed by default into the XS8) and install the right drivers (if nedeed).
Another way is to send the Motif audio into Mac using the audio outs via an audio interface.
BTW refer to the Motif manual to know more.

eBay, if you are lucky. On the other hand: a used copy is probably more expensive than a new used Mac from eBay...

  • Anyone using MOTU 8pre with 10.5.2/Logic 8 Express...?

Looking at a MOTU 8pre to use with Logic 8 Express. Does anyone know if the 8pre is compatible with Leopard 10.5.2... any issues to report?

I previously got the 8pre for 10.5.1 since my M-Audio Firewire 410 didn't offer drivers for leopard. So far I'm very happy with the Motu 8pre. I just got the new MBP Pernryn with 10.5.2 and hoping that everything continues smoothly. I've just downloaded the motu driver for 10.5.1 (the 10.5.2 motu driver isn't available yet) to use with 10.5.2 so I'll be plugging in my 8pre tonight for a test run.

  • Can you use Logic 8 Studio/Pro content with Logic 9 express?

I'm using Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro and Macbook Pro. I have an Academic Version of Logic 8 studio, but I would like to upgrade to Logic 9 express retail. Can my Logic 8 content (sounds) work with logic 9 express? I would upgrade to logic 9 studio, but I heard you can't do that with Academic versions.
    thanks

    Hi
Logic Express was discontinued a year ago, so unless you can find a copy secondhand, or some 'old stock', your choices are to find a new dvd version of Logic Studio, or buy Logic Pro from the Appstore.
Most of the Logic Pro 8 content is the same as Logic Pro 9, and most, if not all of it, will work fine with Pro 9.

  • Trouble-shooting: Logic 8 express / Moto 828

    Hey there,
New to the forum and have a relatively simple monitoring question....
I recently upgraded from Garage Band 3.0.5 to Logic 8 Express. I use the original MOTU 828 firewire interface mainly for recording acoustic guitar. It's worked very well with Garage Band, but for some reason in Logic I can't playback through my monitors the way I'd like.
I have signal and can record just fine, but in order to playback what's been recorded I have to reconfigure my Audio Preference device every time in Logic from MOTU 828 back to Logic's "built in input" or listen with headphones through the MOTU. In other words, something somewhere is set up incorrectly. I've browsed tons of forums and still cannot pinpoint the problem. Some suggest creating an aggregate driver via my Audio/Midi set up on my computer, but I tried that to no avail. Plus Logic is able to recognize my MOTU driver just fine so what am I doing wrong? Can anybody run me through the steps please? I'm sure I've overlooked something very simple.
    Thanks for you time!
    Danny

I'm somewhat familiar with Audio Midi Setup, but not super confident with it actually. Maybe here is where I've gone wrong? I've tinkered around a bunch with it so perhaps I've gotten my wires crossed there. Can you suggest my I/O?
    Default Input > ?
    Default Output > ?
    System Output > ?
I agree having an aggregate device seems unnecessary. I only considered that after the guy at my local Apple store said that I needed to set that up in order to play back with my set up. Hmmm very confusing?
My monitors are run through a receiver which is then wired to my laptop using RCA to mini via headphone port on the computer. The Motu is connected directly to my laptop via firewire cable. Does this sound correct?
And to answer your last question about monitoring, when using Garage Band in the past I've used my desktop monitors to play back and headphones when needed for overdubbing via the MOTU. The difference here is there was never a need to change my device or audio preferences when listening back, as seems the case in Logic.
Is the above chain making sense?

  • Logic 8 Express and Sysex Dumps

I just bought a Waldorf Micro Q, and want to load up the original patches it came with. I was told I need to do a sysex dump through Logic. I am primarily a pianist, so this is all pretty confusing to me.
I have Logic 8 Express, a TASCAM US-122 Audio/MIDI interface and am running OS 10.4.11 on my desktop and 10.5 (latest) on my laptop.
Can anyone point me to instructions, or give me them if this is possible. I just have no idea where to look in Logic for this feature, as I use logic primarily for mixing stuff I have done in garageband. Thanks.

I have no prior experience in such kind of thing, but general guidelines are the following:
    1) Load the MIDI file containing Waldorf patches into Logic (right- or control-click, Open With -> choose Logic Express)
    2) By default Logic transmits MIDI events on all channels, so there is no other manipulation needed, I guess (but if need be, you can set the MIDI channel in the Inspector)
    3) Set Waldorf for reception of SysEx dump (guess it enters into some kind of a waiting mode after that, waiting for the incoming MIDI events)
    4) Press play in Logic, so that it transmits SysEx events to Waldorf

  • Logic Rec Expression

    We are in BPC 7.5NW.
I have to refer 2 accounts and make a calculation and passon the value to 3 rd account in the same applicaiton.
I have written a logic as follows:
    XDIM_MEMBERSET CATEGORY=ACTUAL,XDIM_MEMBERSET TIME= %TIME_SET%,*XDIM_MEMBERSET RPTCURRENCY=LC
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET DATASRC=ECC
    *WHEN DATASRC
    *IS ECC
    //ACCT1/ACCT2 = ACCT3 (Value)(
    *REC(EXPRESSION =(([ACCOUNT].[ACCT1])/([ACCOUNT].[ACCT2])),ACCOUNT=ACCT3,DATASRC=BPCUPDATE)
    *ENDWHEN
    *COMMIT
After execution of package checked the result and noticed than the amount posted to ACCT3 is far higher than expected value by customer .
Is the any thing wrong in the REC/EXPRESSION statement.
Is there any better way to write the logic for the given scenario?
    Appreciate/welcome inputs
    Regards
Edited by: BPC Lover on Sep 28, 2011 8:39 PM

If you want to have formula like Account 1= Account2/Account3
    Then the code will be:
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET CATEGORY=ACTUAL
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET TIME= %TIME_SET%
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET RPTCURRENCY=LC
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET DATASRC=ECC
    *XDIM_MEMBERSET ACCOUNT=ACCT3
    *WHEN DATASRC
    *IS ECC
    *REC(EXPRESSION =[ACCOUNT].[ACCT2]/%VALUE%,ACCOUNT=ACCT1,DATASRC=BPCUPDATE)
    *ENDWHEN
    *COMMIT
The code will select only records with ACCOUNT=ACCT3 and for each record will divide the value in [ACCOUNT].[ACCT2] by the value in the current record (with ACCOUNT=ACCT3) and will store the result in [ACCOUNT].[ACCT1]
