Logic with Reason rewire lagging during recording...

Hey everyone,
I've been working with Logic 8 rewired with reason 4, and have been having issues with logic whilst trying to record MIDI data through my controller. It will pick up uncomplicated, exactly on the beat things fine, but anything more complex that gets absolutely mangled on playback. I don't think it's the computer because I'm working off a brand new iMac in my school's music lab. Is there anything I can do?
The program really doesn't seem to be lagging "per se" because nothing actually slows down during input; it just seems like it's not catching the notes properly. The stuff I end up with after recording is absolute trash, no semblance of what I was playing whatsoever, and quite unusable. I'll send you a fruitbasket if you can help me.

This applies to Live users on intel as well.

The ReWire 1.7 update brings dramatically improved sample loading times and compatibility with Intel Macs. If you use a PC, this update is for you. If you use a mac, you only need this update if you are not using Reason. For instance, if you use ReWire to hook up Ableton Live and Logic on an Intel Mac you should download this update.
Note: If you are using Reason 3.0.5, you do not need this update at all.

  • How I ReWire Logic with Reason 3

Getting Logic Express 7 and Reason 3 ReWired and working well together took me a few days. Thanks to some very helpful posts here (mostly by users "clangwork" and "mlehmann") and a few other sources I have everything working well. Mostly so I can remember, I wrote down the steps. Hope it helps someone!
ReWire Logic Express 7 with Reason 3
    1. Start Logic
    2. Start Reason
    3. Reason: create a mixer, Subtractor, and NN-XT (any device is fine, these are for example) and select some patches.
    4. Reason: DELETE the tracks for the devices you made in the sequencer, but KEEP the devices when asked. IMPORTANT!
    5. Logic: open Environment window, set it on MIDI Instr. (on left), and click New -> Internal -> Rewire. Do it for as many devices as you have in Reason. In this example I have two (for Subtractor and NN-XT). Click on a Rewire object and set Device (on left) to Reason and Channel to SubTractor. Click on the other and set Device to Reason and Channel to NN-XT. Bus should be 6 for both. Close the Environment window.
    6. Logic: Click on any track icon and hold the button down. In the pop up menu, select MIDI Instr. and then the first ReWire listed. It should show up on the left as SubTractor 1. Click another track and do the same for the other Reason device.
    7. Logic: Select an Audio track and set the Channel to ReWire -> RW:Mix L. Pan the track all the way to the left. Select another Audio track and set it to ReWire -> RW:Mix R and pan to the right.
    8. Logic: I have no idea why, but for any Reason devices to play I need to set up a Logic instrument (any, such as ES1, etc.) and load a patch. Play one note, then select one of the yellow ReWire tracks and you should hear your Reason device!
    9. Logic: Record to the ReWire tracks like any other MIDI instrument!
    NOTES:
You can add effects to the Reason rack and don't need to change anything in Logic.
Set levels, pans, etc. in Reason.
You can delete a device and replace it with something else in Reason and don't need to change anything in Logic. Reselect the channel for the ReWire track to update the name.

3- selected a audio track in Logic Pro (audio Track 1)
4- Went to the Audio parameters window, and selected from the drop down list

Use method 2 to help you set up Reason and Logic.
Also you might want to upgrade from Reason 3.0 to 3.0.4.
    good luck.

  • Logic with Reason or Live?

    Hello all and Happy Holidays.
I'm looking to add some more flexibility to Logic. Right now I am trying to decide between adding "Reason" or "Live" to my software arsenal but I'm unsure which is the better choice. For the short term it has to be one or the other. Any thoughts? Pros and cons regarding either?
    Any input would be great.

Reason and Live are both great programs.
Reason is good for a 'general' tool to add to your toolbox. The strings and piano sounds good, the combinator adds a lot of interesting possiblities. But the sequencer is lackluster at best. I never use it as a stand alone program. It's always rewired to Logic, or Live. Another slighlty negative point is Rewire. It's just not as simple as an AU plug-in. It's not complicated, but it's not as simple as using an AU plug-in. I've since replaced all the 'parts' that I commonly using in Reason, by better AU 'version' (e.g., Reaktor for synth/beats. Stylus for beats). Also, it's good to point out that Logic has a nice of AU to begin with. If there's a particular AU Logic plug (e.g., Ultrabeat) that doesn't quite do it for you, then maybe consider looking into a more focused plug-in to meet your needs.
Live is a completely different entity. It's an outstanding sketch pad and composing tool. Absolutely brilliant. It's great for layer parts, trying new arrangements, or recording loops (clips) and then triggering them in a particular order via midi. It's a very interactive compositional tool. The problem is there isn't an easy way to use Logic's plug-ins from Live. Live as a Rewire slave to Logic is very restricting. So when you're composing in Live and you want to use Sculpture, or UltraBeat, you can't (very easily). Also, Live is great for triggering loops/clip live. It's GUI is setup really well.
Also, neither Live, or Reason (as stand alone) allow time signature changes. This is a huge negative point for both of them, especially Live.

  • Strange Vocal Double During Recording Logic 8!

Hi everyone (My first post ,
I am getting a strange doubling effect if i record a vocal on a record enabled track in logic. This only happens during recording in playback it plays as normal although it is quite off putting. I am using a TC Electronic Konnekt 24D Interface and this only occurs when recording a vocal with a condensor mic it does not happen when i record my turntables or any other stereo source?
Any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks

This is due to the fact that you're monitoring through Logic and you're hearing the direct Input as well as the track output causing the doubler effect as the Latency is delaying the track's Output. So set the track you're recording to to "No Output", enable Input monitoring and you should be fine.

  • Logic rewired with Reason midi controller issue.

I use Logic 7.2.3 rewired with Reason and for some "reason" I can't get Reason to recognize my controller which is connected via MIDI to the Digi 003. Any ideas?

Interesting question.. Usually, variation in velocity is a desirable thing, to be able to play an instrument expressively. However, if you want to make your notes all equal velocity, an easy way to do this is with the inspector. Make sure that no regions are selected in the arrange window (so that the inspector says 'midi through'). Then adjust the 'dynamics' setting to 'off' (or whatever the actual terminology is), from that point on, anything you play on any instrument will have the velocity ignored. You can also set this kind of thing up for individual instruments, using the instrument parameter box just below the inspector.

  • Reason Rewire - serious problem with timing / sync

    Hi - here's the problem....
I rewire Reason 4.1 to Logic Pro 8.02.
I try to record a basic drum beat (played in via midi keys) into bar 1 of Logic's sequencer.
I quantize the beat and verify visually that on the very 1st beat of the bar there is a high-hat and a kick drum that should play at exactly the same time - however when I play the sequence back the high-hat is delayed for no apparent reason!! (if i am in cycle mode - after the cycle point is crosssed the kick and hi-hat ARE played together!). If i try to bounce this section the same problem is apparent. Thus making rewire really useless!! It's as if the 1st beat of the bar can only be monophonic or something!
The same thing happens if I record a chord from a Reason instrument (Thor perhaps) - the notes that should all sound in unison on the 1st beat of the bar do not play correctly.
Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this or is it another pathetic bug?

I've had a slightly different but perhaps related problem with Reason in both Logic and Digital Performer. In my case using the Redrum drum machine in Reason and the pattern sequencer in Reason, when you start playback it will make kind of a cut-off squelch kick drum sound on beat 1, then complete silence for about 2 and a half beats, then the sound of the beat will kick in mid-measure.
I haven't done a lot of testing about when and where this happens in the sequence; I work around it by programming 2 measures of silence (pattern D-8 perhaps) into the Redrum before the start of the song and starting the playback from that. It seems like even doing that if you start playback at measure 1 beat 1 it will make that kick drum squelch on the first beat.
Sorry my comments are so vague as to be of little concrete help but I just wanted to point out that I've also had issues on starting up playback of drum beats in Reason when using it in ReWire mode.

  • Rewire with reason

In Logic pro 9 when I create external instrument track It does NOT create a channel strip and NO sound from Reason 3.0.5

for use with logic pro 7.1 there is a tutorial on www.proapptips.com
look there. i did have an error in the video.. you do not have to cable the audio object to the rewire object in the environment.
thanks to quadruplesmurf for that tip.
also the tutorial will get you running with stereo rewire objects in 7.1 which actually doesn't support them, but the tutorial show you a work around.

    that is the tutorial link.

  • Using Logic Pro with Reason 3.0

I am trying to use logic Pro with reason 3.0. I want to be able to sync them together to use redrum within reason as my drum machine. I am using a MOTU 828 mk II audio interface with 8 in's and 8 out's.
When I start logic first and the reason I am not hearing any sound from reason. I can see the meters move in the mixer of reason but I hear nothing.
From the standard documentation that comes with Logic all I can figure out is that rewire is there to sync any other rewire program so that can run side by side of one sequences transport controls.
I want to be able to hear audio from both my arrangement in Logic and in Reason at the same time in the same song in sync.
Can someone please tell me firstly if this is possible and if so how can I implement this kind of setup.
    Thanks in Advance.
    amerretz

Common problem. LP doesn't rewire 'out of the box'.
There are two ways to do this (well, more, but I'll tell you 2)
    1 (Easy Way):
Restart Mac (Just to be sure things are sorted, not everytime)
    Launch Logic
    Launch Reason
    Arrange Window
    Choose a Channel> Pan Left
Go to the Middle section of the Parameters on the Left
With the Channel pop up menu, select Rewire> RWMix L
Repeat for the Right and away you go.
    2 (More Advanced)
    Environment Window
In the Middle section of the parameters on the Left select Create
    Name it Rewire
Under that windows "New" pull down (Top Left), pull down to Audio Object
In the "Channel" pop up (Left, bottom section) select>Rewire (Left, right, 3,4... What ever you want.
Double Click the Audio Object to expand it
Pan Left or right, or whatever you need.
    Rename if you wish
Do the same for the other stereo sideNow's the fun part. Assign these stereo pairs to a bus (above the fader, the default is "Out 1-2")
    Go to the Mixer window
Double click the Bus you assigned, this puts it in the arrange window
    Arrange window
Name the Bus "Rewire" or "ReDrum" or something great like that.
Now you can use it like a stereo pair (which I wish Logic had) for automation and effects and such.

  • Using the Matrix Sequencer from Reason Rewire with Audition

Hello. I've been trying to copy the pattern I've made from the matrix sequencer into audition using rewire. Everything's all hooked up. I've tried exporting one of the patterned tracks as a midi file from the matrix and gotten so far as importing and seeing that the new midi track in Audition sees the note pattern as well as the Malstrom synthesizer. I just can't seem to get the track to be copied into Audition. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    -Christina.

There's no way to *directly* copy a Matrix pattern into Audition (or any other Rewire host). The only way to do it is to use the "Copy Pattern to Track" function. The process is fully documented in the Reason 4 Operation Manual (PDF) installed with Reason - see page 302. In short, this function copies a Matrix pattern to the Reason sequencer track for the Matrix.
The reason your export to MIDI file didn't work is that Reason only exports notes recorded in its sequencer. Matrix patterns don't get exported.

  • JDE 9.1 menus are slow during recording with OpenScript

    Hi,
JDE 9.1 menus (navigation) are slow during recording with OpenScript (newest version: 12.3.0.1 Build 376). If I turn off recorder everything works normal and fast.
    The problem is speed.
Is there any preferences in OpenScript that can handle this issue? Why is this happening?
    Thanks, Proven

Seeing similar things - what browser version are you using?   From what I have seen there is something happening with the BHO enabled on the browser.   We have seen a performance hit on IE 8 & IE 9 while recording and playing back
    The browser just seems "busy"
Haven't tried reverting back to 12.2 but have an issue open and provided IE memory dumps to Oracle .... will keep you posted on what they tell me

  • Logic and Reason (via Rewire) - no sound?

    hey there,

    I dont understand!

  • MIDI notes sent during record ready mode AND whenever I start Logic Pro and

Why is Logic Studio pro sending a MIDI note whenever I am writing a new AUDIO track? I get a steady pulse during record ready mode AND this also happens each time I open a project up. ( although it only sends ONE midi note (NOT repeating) when I open up a project)
I have eliminated it by simply turning off the midi interface but this is hardly a fix.
    thanks for any help!
    Bob

Is it doing this for all projects? Did you change anything in the Environment window? All MIDI gets routed through there. You could attach a monitor object to your MIDI tracks in the Environment to try to see what's going on...although first I would make sure no other programs on your computer could be interfering.

I am working through the tutorial in Logic Pro Training and Logic crashed 4 times in row recording one track with several takes. I sent report to Apple . How can i get help with this??
    thx

Are you recording to an external drive? If so, most likely that drive is not formatted for Mac.
You can check it in Disk Utility by selecting the drive in the Disk Utility and looking at the format. If it says FAT-32 (or something like that), that's Windows format. It should say Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If it doesn't you need to reformat for Mac, but it will erase your drive.
