Logic X audio problems (pop, click, stutter)

Has anyone else experienced audio problems in Logic X? This happens with just a single EXS instrument loaded. When I add notes or playback the audio signal clicks. It seems to be a buffer issue but I'm running 128 samples which doesn't seem that aggressive (especially with only a single instrument loaded). Switching to 256 samples seemed to make things better but it still hitches. I'm running on the latest generation macbook air (core i5 1.3ghz haswell, 4gb ddr3 ram, 128gb ssd) which seems like it should be plenty. Logic is 10.0.0.3 and OSX is 10.8.5 and I'm using on-board sound card. I tried on a core 2 duo macbook air with the same software versions and settings and it works flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same problem with my new 27-in. iMac (Late 2013) and so far it seems to have gone away after talking with Apple support today. I was getting clicks and pops about every 10 minutes and I had to either unplug and replug my Apogee Duet 2, or change the buffer size in Logic, which only provided a temporary solution.
Apple support today had me do the following:
#1 Shut down my computer and unplug everything (all USB's, external hard drives etc.)
#2 Unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.
#3 Turn the computer back on, but as soon as you press the power button to turn it on, you have to hold Option+Command+P+R
#4 You will hear the boot-up chime (or whatever) twice, and after the second chime, let go of the keys.
#5 If you get a Mac Utility screen or something other than your normal login, shut down the computer once more and restart.
#6 Login as usual, and the problem should be fixed.
Apparently resetting the "NVRAM or PRAM" is what this does, although I don't know what it means. He also provided me with two articles to use in the case that it happens again, although he said it shouldn't:

About NVRAM and PRAM
Hopefully this will help.

  • Audio problem: jerky playback (stutter like)  but not echo or looping

Hello everyone, this just started happening on my g4 powerbook 15 inch.
The audio, even system sounds, stutter-- more like there are brief pauses in the audio, like it is started and stopped rapidly, thus no audio is lost or overplayed just silences inserted to chop up the audio flow.
I have tried the fixes for the echo problem but no luck.
What I have noticed is audio works through the headphone jack and only the speakers are giving me the odd chopped up audio.
I also noted that when this is happening if I open the system preferences it is freaking out.
What I mean is If SOUND is open and I am looking at the SOUND EFFECTS screen (where system alerts are) I see in the PLAY SOUND EFFECTS THROUGH: button (unclickable) a rapid switching between internal speakers, headphone and speakers (ispk).
If I open the OUTPUT window I see this rapid switching again, it will end on internal speakers and this chunky, jerky sound continues.
So does anybody else have this rapid start stop problem? I haven't had any echo or looping, just this jerky playback.
I didn't look at every single post here so I may have missed something related to this.
    Any tips would be great.
    Thanks everybody.

I don't know what causing the problem, but if you play the files with VLC you can adjust the audio synchronization in its "Audio" preferences if you check the "Advanced" box at the bottom-left.

  • Audio pops/clicks when changing angles in multicam clips

I am having problems with audio pops/clicks when working with angle switching in multicam clips. it always occurs when i utilize any of the "audio enhancements" features, such as the loudness or background noise removal features. Switching angles results in audible audio pops. The only way to get rid of them is to disable the audio enhancements. This occurs regardless of the audio source. Is this a known bug that is being addressed? I rely heavily on the audio editing features in my work and am hoping this will be resolved in an update soon. Thanks for any help-

Hi Brad, thanks for the reply!
That sounds like a good workaround. What I have been doing in the meantime is create a new compound clip after I finish all of my cuts, and then apply the audio edits to the new contiguous audio clip in the compound clip.
What is really strange and frustrating is that all of my new audio bugginess really began when I could no longer detach audio from my multicam clips in 10.0.9... After doing many searches here, it seems that in this most recent update of FCPX this is no longer a 'feature'... I don't know why they changed this, but in older updates of FCPX you could detach audio from original clips, compound clips, or multicam clips with no problems. I would routinely create and edit all of the angle cuts in my multicam clips in the timeline, and then if I wanted to, be able to detach the audio and do more edits if needed. Thankfully I can still apply edits to compound audio clips, but it would sure be nice if I could just correct/enhance audio without ugly-sounding artifacts in multicam edits. Thanks again-

  • Pops & Clicks not in source audio

    Hello,
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever experienced pops & clicks in a timeline, when the original audio sounds clean?
I'm using FCS2 and my timeline is a 960 x 720 Apple ProRes422 (HQ) as Compressor, 2 outputs of audio with a rate of 48.0KHz and audio format of 32bit floating point.
My source audio (which sounds fine) is mp3 which is also at 48.0KHz and 32bit floating point. It sounded fine in a DVCPro 720p60 timeline, but it sounds terrible in this 25fps timeline. I've re-imported and re-connected the audio clips with the source media, but I want to avoid going through each clip and trying to do the correction with STP.
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Lawrence

    Thanks guys,
I guess I just need to be more careful next time. AIFF only before importing. It's just that it sounded Ok, and imported fine into the project, so I didn't realize it would create a problem when moving it to another timeline. I'd already reconnected all files to the AIFF file (which took ages since I didn't know how to connect the entire batch of clips to the file at once), and everything sounds good now.
    Thanks again,
    Lawrence

  • Audio problem-- converting song to AIFF doesn't stop pops and cracks!!

i've converted mp3s to AIFF both thru itunes and quicktime. when i import them to my FCP HD timeline, they still sound distorted-- with the same cracks and slowness as it does when i try to play an mp3 without converting the song format.
i have made settings 48/16bit to match my footage.
why isn't this working? any tips?

    hi david,
thanks for trying to help. i'm still having the audio problem-- the aiffs sound clean in both quicktime and itunes, crackly and distorted in fcphd.
my fcp sequence setting is for 1080i/60 HDV 29.97fps with audio set to 48khz/16bit stereo.
    any ideas would be appreciated!
    thanks,

  • Multiple Ultrabeat instances cause pops/clicks unrelated to system performance

    Hi folks,
Recently I started having the oddest of issues:
I haven't used ultrabeat in the longest of times. I opened up a few old projects with multiple ultrabeat instances and was getting some weird pops/clicks on transients when multiple Ultrabeat instances were present.
If I mute them, the problems persist. But as soon as I rid the project of all but a single instance the issue goes away.
I do not have any disk/memory issues, and can confirm as much since most of my current projects involve running multiple (and massive) Quantum Leap/East Wst libraries (of the 24bit variety) without any issue. System is a 6-core Mac Pro with 24GB of RAM of lots of fast disks on Lion (current) with Logic (current). Audio I/O is a FF800.
I have no idea why this is happening or how to go about fixing it. Anything would help!
    Thanks!

I'm tempted to say this isn't an I/O buffer issue... as it happens at any latency setting... (from 32 to 1024) and only with Ultrabeat in use on multiple tracks.
I'm currently running a project that has 10 Play instances (covering some 20GB of samples), Kontakt running Steven Slate drums, and a number of other Logic Softsynths and they all run fine - even with multiple Ultrabeat instances.
It's in-fact only the Ultrabeat instances with suffer the clicks and pops on simultaneous transients. No other tracks suffer the issue, including massive string and piano libraries running at the same time.
If I mute the Ultrabeat tracks - the rest of the instruments sound fine. If I unmute a single ultrabeat instance but multiples are there.. that instance will exibit the artifacting. At some point, I'll post a sample.
My current workaround is to simply bounce one fo the Ultrabeat multi-outs down to audio tracks and cut/splice/mix there. The problem is gone... but it's still a problem. I can return to running my sessions at 32 or 64 samples of latency.

  • Need quick response if possible please (pop/clicks throughout project)

i've made many cd's with waveburner. i've imported regular 16bit tracks and created an order the cd. The cd's are nothing fancy just a few earlier fades than the original audio track...changing gaps to 1 sec instead of 2 sec. Then bounced the project and for the first time took off any dither...I realized in all previous projects i must have been dithering twice. Now I get pop clicks through out the cd...not just the start , gaps...but everywhere. I looked to see if there was a previous post for this and although there are quite a few regarding gaps...not throughout the cd.....I have logic pro 7.2.3 and the waveburner version that came along with that. anybody please??

I don't know if this might help:

  • P2 transfer FCP6 Audio problems

When transferring footage to FCP6 the clip plays back fine in the log & transfer viewer window, but when imported to FCP the audio is out of sync and has pops & clicks.
When transfered on my other system which uses FCP5 the footage transfers with no problems
    Any ideas?

Any answer to this issue? I am also now having this same problem. Didn't have it last week but today all my audio is off by four frames after I transfer it in. However, when I export it, it's on again.

  • Glitch, pop and stutter... just another bowl of cereal!

Well my friends this is my first post here and I am in need of some serious help! Ok, for the past week I have spent time trying to narrow down this problem I have with Logic.
I use Logic for the purpose of softsynths and up and till this point I have had no problem but about a week ago when I started Logic and opened up the 'minimoog' plug in it started to glitch, pop and stutter. I then tried sculpture and some other Logic based plugins and they too glitched, stuttered and poped. Now this only happened when I would play chords.
I tried using a different midi keyboard, that did nothing to change the stutter. I tried opening the minimoog plugin as a stand alone and ajusted the latency, I thought it helped a bit, but tried it again today and the problem is still there. I also tried changing the midi usb connector and did nothing to change the problem. I have searched through the preferences endlessly to see if there was somthing i could adjust, it mentioned to adjust the i/o buffer size, so I did from 512 down and up and still the same problem. I must point out that when I switched it down to the lowest buffer size it made the pops sound closer together and less like they were hicupping when at 512(?)
Its not Logic its the computer. I didn't touch or change anything within the computer to have this type of glitchy effect. My computer is a year old, what the **** is up?! Thanks if you have any suggestions. I am basically dead in the water right now with music making.

Ok, this is not good advice as the problem is most likely with the update.
Since the problem started about a week ago I'm guessing the original poster has been using Apple's auto update feature and probably installed a firmware update as well as an airport update. Possibly they are one in the same, the firmware update is to address reliability with Airport.
I'm betting the original poster's problem is with Airport.
Disable Airport and see if the glitching stops.
This is yet another good reason not to blindly trust Apple updates, especially when running a DAW system. Logic is a complicated and resource intensive program, anything that changes key system components can affect real-time applications such as Logic. The update has caused a lot of problems, some studios got whacked out of business. Even after Airport is disabled processor usage is still higher than prior to the update.

  • ITunes + Certain Soundcards = Pops/Clicks!

I've been messing all day trying to figure out this problem and have made some progress. Please could you also test:
Download CR 01 from here http://www.billy-corgan.com/index.php?page=mp3s (this is a downloadable FREE album by the smashing pumpkins). The file is 32mb and contains 4 songs.
Play them in iTunes(windows) and listen out for out random pops/clicks. I hear them in the first 30 seconds of track 1. I am using an RME HDSP 9632 soundcard which is a rather expensive pro audio card.
The same file played through Windows Media Player has no signs of any pops/clicks using the same soundcard.
Now if I change the audio output from the RME card to the motherboards onboard audio, the same file in Itunes does not have any clicks at all.
At first I thought my soundcard might be to blame but this can't be the case because it works perfectly fine with other media players. It's just iTunes(7.1.3.1) that causes these problems.
    Please test!

I'm sad to say I listened to the first 43 seconds of the first track. Now that I've finished vomiting, I can tell you that I didn't hear any click or pops (iTunes 7.2.0.35, Quicktime 7.1.6).
Try enabling safe mode in the Quicktime control panel, on the Audio tab. On my computer it sounds fine either way, but some people have better sound with safe mode enabled.
You may also want to upgrade your Quicktime (you can do that separately from iTunes, if you want).

  • Tx2620 usb audio problems

Hello everyone. I'm planning to use my tx2620 tabletpc for music production and DJing purposes. I have an ESI Maya 44 usb audio interface, a semi professional USB 1.0 card with multiple inputs and outputs. Since I first installed it, I've been unable to get it to work properly.
Audio quality is terrible, full of clicks and pops under any latency setting on the ASIO driver. I've tried every possible Vista configuration to get it to work as it should, to no avail... (wifi off, antivirus off, only minimum services active,...) but the audio still has clicks and pops.
The card has been tested on other computers with the same drivers and ASIO and works just as expected, but it refuses to provide clean sound under the tx2620. I believe there might be some hardware conflict/issue on my machine.
Can anybody help me out. Thanks in advance.

I would try recovering first to eliminate all possibilty of software conflict. If that doesn't work, then I would try all the avaliable USB ports. You have already tried turing off the wireless, which is good. If all that fails, uninstall and reinstall the USB hubs, update your Audio Driver and your Bios. If at that point you still have the problem, then you are probably looking at an incompatability.

  • Audio crackle/pop with new MacBook Pro under Vista

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro (multi-touch, Penryn cpu) and have used Boot Camp to install Windows Vista on it. Vista installed fine, and then I used the Restore DVDs that came with my MBP to install the drivers. The Device Manager shows that everything is installed.
All is not well, however. Whenever sound is being output, there are random crackles or pops - sometimes there will only be one every 5 minutes or so, sometimes there are 10 of them right in a row. The only clue I can find is that the Problem Reports And Solutions application in Vista says that there is a "Compatibility issue between Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 and Windows Vista." There is no solution offered. I don't know if this problem is directly related to the audio problems, but it seems likely.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any way to fix this and stop the audio crackles?

Well after a week and a half of testing and being unsatisfied with choppy audio on my MBP I believe I may have found the answer. The cause lies in the audio API within Vista; there is a specific service (Multimedia Class Scheduler) that adjusts the priority of multimedia applications according to resources available and one of the factors that affects the prioritization is network usage.
I tried pretty much every Broadcom driver available from HP and Dell to no avail; some reduced the frequency of the pops and crackles but none of them removed it completely.
I believe the solution lies within several registry keys that control the Multimedia Class Scheduler service. Open up regedit and modify the following keys:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
Set NetworkThrottlingIndex and SystemResponsiveness to 10 each (decimal)
    and
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\Tasks\Audio
    Set SchedulingPriority to High.
After changing these 2 keys I couldn't here any audible stutter regardless of whichever driver I used. I am currently using v1.96 for the Realtek and 4.170.77.3 for the Broadcom.

  • Audio Problem since upgrading to Mountain Lion

Has anyone encountered audio problems with their iMac?  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my i7 27" with 16GB of Ram and found that the Audio starts to get distorted and eventually cuts out after about an hour!  It starts cutting in and out when I move the mouse and eventually there will be no sound at all!
Sometimes it can take over an hour of steady use, my last time was watching a movie on Netflix.  I initially noticed this using a USB DAC Headphone Amp.
I never had any Audio problems before, my machine is over 1 year old.
I enjoy watching movies in iTunes and DVDs, but this is making it difficult!  A full restart usually fixes the problem for a time but it will eventually come back
I'm seriously thinking of going back to Lion for the time being and seeing if it is a Hardware problem.

i don't know if mine is the same issue, but i had no sound through any of my applications after upgrading to mountain lion.  here is what i had to do to fix it:
-- applications > utilities > audio midi setup > UNmute all options under "built-in output" (they were mysteriously muted)
Also, I noticed that the options for "use this device for sound output" and "play alerts & sound effects through this device" were no longer assigned to my Built-in Output device.  They were assigned to some other random sound driver.  To fix, i right-clicked on Built-in Output and reassigned those items to my built in speakers.  All fixed now!
    very weird problem, though.
