Logic X Instrument Library: To Alias or Not

Hey, guys.  I'm not a pro when it comes to DAW's, so please bear with me.
I see that there are a few threads on moving Logic X's instrument libraries to an external drive.  My understanding is that this will allow Logic to read and write simultaneously.  That makes total sense.  However, I have read conflicting stuff regarding what the best method to do this is.  I have read that the alias method is not as good as the symbolic links method and vice versa; although it does appear that the alias route is slightly more popular.  And most of that info is 1 to 6 years old.  I'm curious if there is "THE WAY" to do this in 2015.
I think I have a handle on how to do it, but just thought I'd throw this up before I actually do it.

Thanks again for all of the info.  And sorry...I did understand that the partition was for file management.  I've just read so much that putting the least amount of load on your HD is best when trying to configure your computer for efficient recording.  But it's good to read that this isn't really an issue.
Coincidentally, I just bought an AirPort Time Capsule so that I could back up without having to worry about me doing it manually.  Any particular reason why you stay away from Time Machine?
Do you ever access those sample libraries from that external drive?  If so, any issues?  I plan to primarily record audio files (real instruments), but do plan on using the sound libraries on occasion.  (After all, I've already paid for them.  )  Besides, I think it's quick way to learn to manipulate pre-existing sounds with effects and such.  I figure the more I get into the software, the more I can stumble on things I don't know exist.  DAW's can be pretty overwhelming.  I know that what I'm about to ask is a loaded question with varying answers, but do you have any tips on a good way to really start to learn Logic X?...such as books or online videos?  I stumbled across a YouTube channel where a guy posts some pretty cool instruction videos on Logic X.
Thanks, again, Pancenter.
No problem, the reason for partitioning was way back in my first post.
You're right though, reducing load and background (operating system) interference is important for efficient recording. Unfortunately, OSX is a bit top heavy these days, Mavericks and Yosemite aren't nearly as efficient as Snow Leopard for audio recording.
All my sample libraries and loops are on the second partition, as well as my EXS instruments, I only use the external drives for backup. May basic system lives inside the MacPro. I don't use Time Machine because it's yet another process running that I don't need, I make disk image backups once a week and keep current /old projects backed up on external drives or DVD. Drives are cheap now days, I have eight or nine external drives of varying sizes that I rotate for project backups. I actually loath Apple's "don't worry, we'll do it for you" concept of computing, it's created a whole group of users that are dependent...(and yet entitled),  of course, that's good for Apple's business.
I've used Logic since a MIDI only version at 2.2, I switched to Logic-audio at around v3 or 3.5, long before Apple purchased it. There was no online help or videos, I sat down with the manual and experimented by pressing every key and key combination on the computer keyboard to see what Logic would do. Before Logic I used an Amiga computer with high quality Sunrize stereo audio card, the card alone cost $1,200 so I had some experience with Audio/MIDI computing before coming to Logic.
As a part-time educator I can tell you that curiosity is your friend, knowledge is something you learn internally, it's different than being shown something in a video.. you didn't learn the procedure, you were shown the procedure, strive to keep a balance between learning on your own and being shown how to do something someone else has figured out. The things you figure out on your own can be applied to many different situations, things you're shown most often are not because you haven't made the internal connections. As with anything... learn the basics! I can't stress how important file management is. If you're going to be recording audio learn how to use equalizers and compressors first, then branch out to the more esoteric plugins. Take your time, as difficult as it is not run before walking it will serve you well as you proceed... although a little running for inspiration can be a good thing to keep you going. If you're going to record audio, the best thing you can learn is how to make a good audio recording, that has nothing to do with the computer or software. Microphone placement, room sound, microphone choice, instruments...etc...etc.
I use a $600, seven year old Acer laptop for live recording, It can record 12 simultaneous tracks to the internal drive for hours without a blip, Windows XP and Win7 are highly configurable and if you know what your doing they make excellent operating systems for live work. I then move the files over to Logic for mixing or software instrument additions.
good luck-

  • How do I get my 3rd party instruments to show up in my Logic Pro instrument library?

I have purchased and downloaded orchestra instrument libraries from Albion. How do I get them to show up in my instrument library so they can be used?

    Hi
If you mean the Spitfire Albion series (?) these run within Kontakt.
Most 3rd party plugins do not directly support the Logic Library, so you would need to manually load in the plugin and any setting within the plug itself.
You can then save that as a "Logic" Setting or Patch, which will show up in the Library.
There is a large collection of Logic Settings for many 3rd party plugs over at LogicProHelp.com

  • Instruments in Logic Pro 9 Library will not load: I try to add a new instrument on a project and get a "cannot be found" error.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
As a faculty member in the School of Music, I have just acquired a copy of Logic Pro 9.1.8 through my University. The programs and instrument packs were installed by our IT department and show as being fully installed on Logic Pro when I search for additional content through the Logic Pro tab at the top of the screen. The window shows that all 6 Jam Packs, Logic Pro & Main Stage Content (Essential and Additional) GarageBand content, and Surround content is installed. However when I try and add a new instrument on a project, most of these instruments cannot be found. I get the following error:
    Audio file “KB_pizz_f_C1.wav” not found!
I then press the Continue Tab, and it looks for the instruments in an empty file that Logic creates in the Music section of the hard drive. I have investigated the sounds by going through the MAC Hard Drive>Library>Application Support>Logic>Sampler Instruments folder, and tried to copy the sounds into the Music>Logic folder created by the program. That does not work either. Even attempting to go into these Logic Pro instrument files one at a time has proved fruitless. I am told that the file cannot be opened.
The files appear to be installed, but cannot be accessed or opened. They all have that translucent grey appearance when I attempt to click on the icon. This is true for about 80% of the files in the instrumental library. Whenever I create an instrument, the EVP88 Electric Piano is installed by default. There are a few instruments that I can successfully replace this default instrument with, but a majority of the instrumental library remains unavailable. Can anyone help?

    Kurt:
You might try a different way of adding the video files to the web page. This demo page has one where the file does not load until the play button is selected: Opening Item in a New, Precisely Sized Window. This demo page has 9 short videos on it using that method: PhotoPresenter Animated Slideshow Themes. Just add a screenshot of one of the movie frames or any photo you want and add the Play button on or below it.
You manually upload the movie file to your server so iWeb is not involved in the uploading the file at any time.
Similarly this demo page, QT movies via iFrame, has a method that has you manually uploading the file to the server and linking to it via iFrame code. That page also has other similar methods.
Another method is demonstrated in Roddy's iWeb for Musicians site on his Video page. Here you also upload manually.

  • Changing Logic instrument library path

I changed the path of the instrument library in garagebamd recently to my external HDD. That works great! now how can i get logic to recognize this path so that i may use garagebands instrument library in addition to logics just as it would be if they were installed on the same disk?

You said you are using the instrument insert menu, and then you ask where is it?
Presumably, if you have to ask, you don't know where it is, and thus are likely to be not using it.
I really recommend starting with at least the Getting Started menu, which explains what and where these things are with screenshots in a far better way than can be typed out in a forum post.
In short, you need to have a software instrument track selected, and click-holding on the input slot (directly above the output slot) to get the instruments menu. This is different to the insert FX menu, which will only list the FX plugins you have installed (ie, not any instruments).

  • I just installed Mach5. It's not listed in the Logic 7 instrument menu.

It said installation was sucessful. I was then instructed to
launch the Mach5 from inside Logic 7.1. When i check the menus
in an instrument channel, it's simply not available. I can
obviously see all the other AU instruments; just no Mach5. I installed the iLock Pace stuff. It claimed to work.
I uninstalled an re-installed several times, but it never becomes available in Logic.
Anyone know why the Mach5 isn't available, and how to fix it?

    thats right...
Open AU manager from: Logic pro/preferences/start logic AU manager
Make sure Machfive is checked and hit OK
Logic will load and tell you MachFive is incompatable, but thats OK
When you go to assign it to an Instrument track it will be under AU Insrtuments (incompatable)
But don't worry it works fine
Oh By the way, I made an Environment for the MachFive to run Multitimbral, it works, but has a few bugs I gotta work out

  • Adding a Soundfont to my Logic Studio instruments folder.

    Hello,
I've just tried to add a purchased Soundfont instrument (Celtic Winds Tin Whistle) to Logic Studio.  Instructions indicate that i need to add it to the sampler instruments folder (done) and then  "chose the Soundfont2 file in the EXS24 mk11 Sampler Instruments pop-up menu.  The EXS24 automatically converts the chosen file into an EXS sampler instrument."
Where do I find this EXS24 pop-up menu?  I can't find in any of the documentation how you bring this sampler up to get at the pop-up menu.  Or is there another way I should be doing this?
And-Does the Soundfont instrument I purchased work in Logic or must it be Soundfont2?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

You should copy the file here:
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments
    Then open exs24 and click on the instruments popup menu (green text on black surface, between "unison" and "edit|options" buttons);
    If you had it already open choose "refresh menu" from the aforementioned popup menu;
Now you should see the font and be able to select it. when you select it EXS24 will create a folder within that menu with all the patches contained inside the soundfont. They'll be already converted and selectable in the right format.
Not sure about soundfont 1 or 2. I think i always found version2 around.
Remember also you have a builtin plugin to manage with soundfonts called DSLMusicDevice.
You can pick it in the instruments popup menu under "Au Instruments" > "Apple".
In order for this plugin to see soundfonts you need to place them in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks folder.
It's very basic but sometimes does a better job with some loops not usually well done.
    regards.

  • How can I manage 1 iTunes library with 2 computers (not on same network)?

I have 1 very large iTunes library in which I am always adding/deleting/editing songs and 2 computers (1 home, 1 laptop). I would like to be able to manage my library with my laptop when I am away from home but also be able to see any changes I made next time I open iTunes on my home computer. I tried home sharing but this seems to be more for computers on the same network. My library is much too big for iCloud. Someone suggested I hold shift when I open iTunes to select a library but even though I can select the library file I want, it doesn't populate iTunes with my changes (or any music for that matter). I'm running XP with the latest version of iTunes (10.7.0.21). Thanks

This describes a work/home scenario.  For home/away use, edit the library directly on the portable backup when away, then sync libraries on your return.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organized within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organized) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behavior has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entries and import the local content you have on that box.

  • I have installled garageband, but it says my instrument library is invalid.

I have installled garageband, but it says my instrument library is invalid...
    please help!!!!

I have had the same problem, and I think it might relate to the fact that the account that is trying to launch GB is a non-admin account. I was able to launch the program OK from an admin account and then as soon as I try to launch it from my son's account (limited), it gave me the error.
I need to find a work around, because my son likes GB, but I am not about to make him an admin user to to use GB.

  • Mac alias could not be opened....

everytime i try connecting to a computer on my network i get a:
"alias could not be opened because the original item cannot be found"
i have just recently upgraded a G5 computer to Tiger, and previously i was able to connect to the network and it was all fine. After the upgrade, it gave me that error every time i tried connecting to a computer. my internet connection is fine, my email works fine, other computers can connect to that computer but it can't connect to any computer. I am very lost and confused...can someone help me?

OK, then some things you might try:
    1. In /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder toss the following if present:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.smb.server.plist
    preferences.plist
You will need to reconfigure all your network preferences on this machine.
    2. In Network preferences TCP/IP section for the port you are using, turn off IPv6 in the Configure IPv6 drop down menu. Do this for all the ports you currently use - Ethernet, Airport, etc.
    3. Update OS X to 10.5.4 or the current version. You can download combo updaters from www.apple.com/support/downloads/. 10.5.1 is not the best version of OS X to use as it had many problems. Of course back up your current system before doing any updates, and repair the hard drive and permissions before backing up.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion on an iMac and I am trying to run Garageband but get message telling me that the instrument library is invalid and I should choose a valid Instrument Folder or re-install Garageband. Where do I find such a folder?

I recently upgraded to Lion on an iMac and I am trying to run Garageband but get message telling me that the instrument library is invalid and I should choose a valid Instrument Folder or re-install Garageband. Where do I find such a folder?

Thanks very much. Yes, I am using the installer files and serial number from the URL you referenced above. I have spent many hours trying to get it to work. I would love some help!!
The problem is that the instructions that come in the pdf with the downloaded files do not work, because the files that download from that page do not have the names referred to in the pdf, and most of the things that are referred to in the instructions do not happen. Here is what actually happened.
When I downloaded the files from the website, these are the files that downloaded:
I double-clicked each one and they extracted into two different folders.
Then I read a message on the forum that said to move all the extractred files into the same folder, so I moved all files into one file at C:\Creative Suite CS2\Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 as was pictured in the forum message. Here are screen shots showing all of the files in that folder I have now:
So then I double clicked the "Setup" file and I got this error message:
So then I tried to install the programs separately from the installer inside the folders Photoshop and Illustrator. I got this far and entered the serial number from the website:
But then I got this error message, even though I was using the files and serial number exactly from the website:
I tried both photoshop and illustrator and the same thing happened.
(I also looked at Solution 2 that you mentioned above but I don't have anything called VCOM on the computer. Also the error message that I got is not that one.)
I think I really need a set of instructions that lists the steps in order to do, but based on the files that actually download from the website and what happens when you extract the files. I feel as if I have all of the proper files but it still doesn't work.
    Thank you very much!

  • Logic express "Instrument EXS24 Yamaha Grand Piano.exs: 054_F#2KM56_S.wav file audio couldn't be found"

Hi, i have a problem with logic express opening on the macbook pro, i have the program on the imac and it works good, but when i put it on the macbook pro and open it i want to select the acoustic piano instrument and it says: "Instrument EXS24 Yamaha Grand Piano.exs: 054_F#2KM56_S.wav file audio couldn't be found", and i cant use the piano controller to record acoustics pianos, please if someone know what is happening and how to fix it,
    Thx!

It's actually a GarageBand file: /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/Grand Piano. You could copy it over from your iMac if it's missing on your MBP. If you find you have other files missing you might want to just reinstall the content.

  • Logic Pro 9 MIDI issues with sustaining notes

I'm a little new to Logic 9 but please bear with me. I have connected my keyboard via MIDI to USB to my Mac and the computer recognizes it perfectly but when I try to play some software instruments it many times continues to play a certain note even after I depressed it. I am not holding down my sustain pedal yet Logic still continues to play a certain note. It does not seem to be a slow fade out or anything like that but rather it seems to be stuck. It does not seem to be really any given note, since it happened to me on different notes. The only way for me to stop Logic from playing is either to switch instruments of reset the MIDI by going to the control panel at the bottom and clicking repeatedly there on MIDI in.
Could someone clue me in on what to do to remedy this issue?

sounds like either logic is not seeing the note off command from the keyboard or the keyboard is not sending it properly. try playing the note that is sticking down and up again and see if the stuck note stops. or take a look at the midi i/o window in the transport at the bottom of the arrange page when you press the note it will show the note and when you let off, it should read off.
Also you may want to limit some info coming into logic and see if that make a difference. go to, project settings>midi>input filter, and check the aftertouch and polyphonic aftertouch, and maybe system exclusive, so that it is filtered out and see if that helps

  • Does anyone have issues with the instrument library?

I've installed iLife 08 and then added all the jam packs. Now when I open GB the default track is an accordion (not a piano) and when adding loops to the timeline they take on a different instrument sound (e.g. drum loop sounds like raindrops, etc.)
I've searched high and low for similar problems and have found nothing that resembles this, I've cleared my preferences and repaired permissions and still nothing helps, I've contemplated reinstalling but I have no guarentee that that will help and I'm reluctant to invent the 3 hours it will take to do all that if it is all for nothing...
Bottom line is...is this really an issue with the instrument library and is there any way for me to fix this without reinstalling?

Just loaded the 6.0.2 update a few days ago.  I was hoping it would fix the dropping of wifi where the 4g and 3g always kept.  I have restored the router and I have even switched towers through AT&T's help, but to no avail.  I still am dropped and sometimes it spins and spins looking to connect and then says, Cannot connect at this time. Sometimes it connects, and when the phone goes to sleep, it disconnects and then it is heck connecting again.   I am very upset for I do not have unlimited data and my data has soared over 270 mg which I usually always kept way below 200 as  being in my home most of the time.  I am planning to take into AT& T store for a new one, just not happy with the wifi situation.  It is sad that this cannot be fixed with an update.  I saw earlier that some Iphone 5 made in China were the cuprits, and maybe I got one of those.  I hope At&T and Apple are reading these dialogs.  Please let me know if fixes are on the way!
