  • "logical disk health" monitor is critical

    Hello
We have 2 HP-UX servers to monitor and everything is fine until we mount and unmount the servers disks. when we change a disk "Logical
Disk Health" monitors State goes Critical. unfortunately this change may happen again. I reduced the discovery interval to 5 minutes and no luck. other monitors like "% free space" are healthy. what am i missing?

I have done this. I've mentioned above the "Logical Disk Health" monitor is in critical state. other
    monitors are healthy.
Some body told me override the physical disk discoveries interval from 14400 to 600 for test. it didn't
    work.
I checked the HP-UX MP user guide, there is no information about logical disk health parameters and dependencies.
    any idea?

  • Need to separate drive alerts with Logical Disk Free Space monitoring in SCOM 2012

I have an interesting need here to separate our SCOM alerts for Logical Disk Free space so that one alert is for OSSystem drives ONLY (C:/D:) and the other monitor alerts on all APP drives only (E:, etc). So far we have had great success using Kevin Holman's
    blog post.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/11/24/writing-monitors-to-target-logical-or-physical-disks.aspx
We have overrides set so that the monitors report ONLY the percentage of free space left and ignores any MB threshold. So far so good, the alert comes in that host A reports low disk space on D: at 2.345...% free or host B reports low disk space on F: at
4.567...% free space etc. Now that we have our monitors working within the Windows Server classes Logical Disk, we need to set these monitors so that one is just for C or D drives with the alert named system Logical Disk Free Space OS Disk Warn and the other
monitor just reports on E - Z drives (excluding C or D) with the alert named Logical Disk Free Space APP Disk Warn.
We are very new to SCOM so I made the rookie mistake of creating a dynamic group for all Windows Server 2003 Logical Disk class that only includes Device Name = C or D. But found out too late you cant point a monitor to a group, it has to target a class.
And using the current monitors we set up with the above blog uses the correct logical disk class, but it doesnt care what instance (device Id = value), it will report low disk space on ANY logical drive. How in the world can we separate and exclude these monitors
so that one alerts only on OS disks (C and D) and the other only alerts on app disks (E through Z)?

    Hi Kevsharp,
Quite confusing after reading your question.
So based on your requirement, What i understand is you need separate alerts for all the drives of the disk is running at low or out of space right ?
For the above just create a simple performance counter monitor and use the same counters as kevin has used in his blog.
Now Target: Use Windows server operating system (This will target all the Windows operating system agents in your SCOM. If the specified discovery MP's are installed).
Set a threshold Below 10% is critical or what ever. You will get the alerts in your console.

  • General hardware monitoring on SCOM 2012 R2

Hello everybody. Sorry for maybe common question, i'm absolutely newbie in SCOM. I'm standing at task of monitoring basic servers counters - Memory utilization, disk free space & CPU utilization. After reading some articles about SCOM architecture I
get a little frustrated - cannot get full understanding about monitoring mechanisms. What I want from my monitors:
    - Monitor 2,3...N groups of servers with _different_ disk free space thresholds and sending alerts (email) to specific people.
I've already have imported management pack for Windows OS, configure channels & subscribers.
I get a lot of question trying to configure such monitoring, maybe you can help me (or send me to manuals)
    1. I can use monitor's for specific OS (i.e. logical disk free space), then I need to override it(why? I can't use it?) and select servers.
    2. How can I map a group of servers to monitor?
    3. Do I need rules?
    4. New monitor sets in installed agents automatically?
Cannot understand steps, in which I should resolve my task..

    1. Windows OS management pack has default monitor for disk free space and CPU utilization. If you 2,3,...N groups of servers with different disk free space thresholds, you should create Groups which contains the required servers and using override with target
    of the gorups.
For how to create an override, pls. refer
    http://jimmoldenhauer.blogspot.hk/2012/11/scom-2012-creating-overides.html
    2. The target of the monitor is set to the groups of server
    3. It depend on situation
Rules do not affect the health state of the target object. They are used for one of three functions
    a) Alerting Rules
Alerting rules create an alert when a particular event is detected. This can be any of the different kinds of events shown in Data Sources. Alerting rules do not affect health state.
    b) Collection Rules
Collection rules collect events or performance data to the Operations Manager database and data warehouse. They do not create alerts or set health state.
Collection rules can use each of the data sources shown in Data Sources. The data will be converted to either an event or to performance data depending on the particular kind of collection rule you are creating. For some wizards, you will need to provide
the specific information from the data source that will be used for different properties of the data being collected.
    c) Command Rules
Command rules will run a script or command on a schedule. They do not create alerts or collect any data.
    4) All agents will automatic download updated its monitor and rule which applicable to the server.

  • Performance of Network Monitoring in SCOM 2012 SP1

    Hi all!
I´ve problems with performance of the network monitoring feature in SCOM 2012 SP1.
    According to the
guide the following should be adeqate:
•1000 network devices (approximately 12,500 monitored ports) managed by a resource pool that has three or more management servers
•500 network devices (approximately 6,250 monitored ports) managed by a resource pool that has two or more gateway servers
We have 800 network devices with a total of 24000 ports,
BUT only 1500 of them are monitored. This is basically what happens automatically after discovery, since only ports between monitored devices are monitored by default.
For this setup I first used only one management server dedicated to the Network Pool,
based on my assumption that if two servers could monitor 6250 ports, one server would be more than enough for 1500. I found this configuration working very poorly so I added another server. I now have two servers
dedicated for the Network Resource Pool. (They are NOT members of the “All management servers resource pool”)
Still, I get constant alerts regarding Health Services Private Bytes on these servers. They vary between 1-2Gbytes. Furthermore, if one of the servers goes offline, the network devices that was monitored by that server becomes grey for
several hours. Even if the server only is rebooted it takes forever to get everything online and green again.
I don´t really know what I should do now. I had a plan to replace our current network monitoring system (SNMPc) which easily handles this load on only one server. They are of course completely different beasts, but still. SCOM seems to
require a massive back-end to produce equivalent real life results.
Any suggestions or reflections from the field are highly appreciated!
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi,
Try to overide the monitor Health Services Private Bytes by the following steps.
◾Go Authoring space – Management Pack Objects – Monitors
◾Go to change scope – select clear all – look for Health Service – tick it and press OK.
◾Expand Health Service – expand Entity Health – expand Performance – expand Health Service Performance
◾Select the Health Health Service Private Bytes Threshold.
◾Right click the mouse and choose to overide the monitor for a group
◾Select the group called Management Server Computer Group and press OK
◾Select the Agent Performance Monitor Type – Threshold and change the value 104857600 to ex. 2610612736.
◾Select to store the overide in a management pack you have created and press OK

  • Minimum value of UNIX/Linux Heartbeat Monitor in scom 2012

    Heartbeat Monitor: Interval , Missed
Heartbeats and Missed Heartbeats from 300 , 630 ,2 to 120, 150, 1 in event viewer shows Error

One or more workflows were affected by this.
What is the best minimum value?

You've ended up in the wrong forum. mostly service manager here, Ops manager is
    over there https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?category=systemcenteroperationsmanager.
That being said, the error you reference is somewhat abstracted from the values you adjusted. the error you posted is the system comparison operator complaining that it only has one thing to compare, typically you need two things to do a comparison.
Here is a person running into a similar problem with the lync MP, where it was trying to compare the site assignment of two systems, but the environment only has one system.
http://thoughtsonopsmgr.blogspot.com/2014/09/lync-server-2010-mp-bug-alert.html. is it possible this is an outgrowth of something similar in your unix environment? Do you have any more details about the specific health XML that's failing?

  • Services monitored by SCOM 2012

    Hi All,
I am using SCOM 2012 SP1 in our environment. I am a bit puzzled about what all services of a windows server are monitored by default in SCOM. I am asking this because recently we have WinRM service stopped on a windows server but no alert get generated in
SCOM. Does I need to manually set up monitoring for this service?
    Regards,
    Daya

    Hi,
The System Center Management Pack for Windows Server Operating System provides the fundamental monitoring basics for computers.
From what I can see, the WinRM service is not monitorred by default.
And I would like to suggest you also download the MP guide for Operating System management pack to get more details:

  • Service Availability Report in SCOM 2012

Hi, we are having SCOM 2012 SP1 and need a report on Service Availability for the below services running on the servers
    Active Directory
    DFS
    DNS
    PKI
    DHCP
Also, would like to understand how the SCOM would report the service availability when there are network issues (primarily WAN Issues) preventing the SCOM Server from reaching the server Hosting the service.
    Thanks,
    Naren.
    Thanks & regards, Naren.

    Hi,
In order to generate reports on the services you mentioned, you need to go through two steps for starters.
    1. You need to create Distributed Applications for the services (Active Directory excluded since that DA is already created when importing the AD MP) see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh457612.aspx for how it can be done.
    2. You also need to create SLA´s (Service Level Tracking in the Authoring pane of the console) see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh230719.aspx
The behaviour can somehow be modified since you decide what should count as donwtime when creating your SLA. However, a server which become unreachable would most likely be classified as critical and therefore it would "bring down" your service
    in SCOM.
Once you have created the DA´s you want, you can use the default report "Service Level Tracking Summary" Report under the category "Microsoft Service Level Report Library". Here, you can choose to go back to a certain time to display
your SLA levels. Be aware though, you can never go futher back than to the date where you created the DA and the SLA since that´s when the availability starts measuring.

  • Some of the SQL Server 2012 are not getting monitored in SCOM 2012 SP1.( basics monitoring is happening, expect SQL role)

Found that all the SQL servers are getting monitored, expect few servers which are having SQL server 2012 role.
proxy is enabled for these servers, when I checked discovered inventory for SQL 2012 database unable to find these servers in that list.
and other servers having SQL Server 2012 monitoring properly issue is with only few servers.

    Hi,
thanks for the all the input, we are using service account as windows account instead of action account !!
will that also affect discovery of SQL role?
and also found that there are many alerts in SCOM console, with alert description :
SQL Server cannot authenticate using Kerberos because the Service Principal Name
(SPN) is missing, misplaced, or duplicated.
please let me know how we can resolve this issue, will it affect SQL discovery as well ?

  • Office 365 Monitoring using SCOM 2012 R2

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43708
We have imported MP for O365 and added the new subscription (with Global Administrator permissions using Office 365 admin )after that we got an alert like below:
     Connection to EndPoint Service failed
Any idea what would be the issue here?
    Sengo

    Hi,
It's the correct page response "EndPoint not found", if you try to access the  https://office365servicehealthcommunications.cloudapp.net/shdtenantcommunications.svc
    page.
The blank username and passwords are Ok as well, but be careful to edit your credentials from the subscription page, as they are not changed in this case in the Office365 Run As Account, looks like a bug. Therefore, edit them only through
the Accounts menu, or create a new subscription.
The management pack communicates exactly to the mentioned above page only, it's not possible to use IPs, as they could be changed at MS servers side. The host should be whitelisted in case if you have firewalls\proxy. At the same time, depending
on your network\proxy\subscription configurations, possible issues could exist because of certificates and authorization at different levels.
In case of proxy - the Office 365 Proxy Run As Account should be configured. It's automatically created during installation of MP, but the account with Internet access should be added there. Take in attention that using the Office365 Run As
Account does not work out. Therefore the separate Windows account should be created and used as the Office 365 Proxy Run As Account, even if it's the same as the Office365 Run As Account. When using the proxy account, one of the Monitoringhost.exe
processes works under this account. If the proxy account is not configured, this process works under the system account. The proxy account was not documented in Office365 MP manual.
Don't change the default name of created Office 365 Run As accounts, somehow it affects the connection monitor.
    Hope it helps :)
    Natalya
    Hi Natalya,
Thanks for this post. Indeed my SCOM server is behind a proxy. Let's say my Office 365 account is called "SCOM.O365" - it appears under Administration - Accounts under Basic Authentication, with the "friendly" name of "Office 365
Run As Account_xxxxx". Do you mean I create a second account under "Windows" (it would be Active Directory based) also called "SCOM.O365" that the MP will use for proxy, and the MP will automatically run MonitoringHost.exe with this
    AD account?
    thanks!
