Login failure on Mac Pro

I cannot login to my my '09 Mac Pro. Ive tried restoring the system from my time machine backup, restoring my system from the back DVD that came with my Mac Pror, fixing the disk permissions, and performing disk repairs. None of these thing have allowed me to login.
Here is some more background
My Mac Pro has three diffent HD volumes: a 40G SSD boot volume, a 640g Seagate HD that has my var/usr diretories, and applications directory on it, and a 150g Final Cut Scratch drive that has my Final Cut Express projects on it. The SSD drive and the Seagate HD both get backed up via time machine to a 2TB external Fire Wire drive. I am running Snow Leopard on this machine. There are only two accounts on the machine, mine, and my wifes.
My Mac Pro normally stays on all the time, this is mainly to support Itunes and my Apple TV. The only times it gets rebooted is when I have to do an update that requires one.
So yesterday I woke my Mac Pro up, and discovered that my wall paper image was gone. I thought this was kind of puzzling, so then I quick switched over to my wife's account on the machine. It was there I notieced that a mail window that she had open contained nothing but NULL characters. This lead me to reboot the machine, and that turned out to be a mistake. Now, after a reboot, the login screen comes up, and it will accept my password, then I see a the blue login bar, and an error message comes up telling me that it cannot login at this time, and that an error occured upon login. Both accounts on the machine give the same login behavior, even after mutiple attemps to restore the system.
It will boot onto the backup DVD that came with the machine. I can run terminals from here, and I know just enough bash shell commands to be dangerous. From the terminal, I did discover that the name of my 640g HD that contains the var/usr directories had been changed. I think my 22 month old son who loves anything with buttons may have been responsible for this.
I suspect that somehow the connection between the Operating system on the SSD drive and the user information on the 640g HD has somehow been broken. When I ran the Disk Utility tools, errors were found on the 640g HD.
Would changing the name of the volume that contains the var/usr diretories screw up the login process? Where can I find the login logs so I can try to figure out what is going on? Could I use the terminal in single user mode to create a new admin account, so I could at least get the machine to login to the GUI?
I can boot the machine into single user mode, and I still remember some of my VI from college, so I think I can browse logs. I also should note that when I did my system restores, it only restored the files on my SSD drive.
Thanks in advance,
C. Alan

Ok I fixed it.
For the purposes of helping someone else in the future, I will document how I did it.
The problem was that the volume that the had the user directory on it had accidentally been renamed. I think the culprit responsible for that was my almost 2 year old son. So when the computer went to boot up, in the user setup it was looking in the wrong place for user information. Thus, the login error.
There are two ways to fix this (btw, this works for OSX 10.6):
The first way...
1. If you know what the name of the volume is supposed to be, you can boot the computer using the back DVD, and let the install progress to the point to where you find the current Volume name that has your user folder in it. Write down the current volume name, and then cancel the install.
2. Then go to the utility menu, and open a terminal session. you then need to type in:
diskutil rename "current volume name" "old volume name"
In my case, my current volume name that my user directory was in was called "ALSKJD", and the old Volume name was "Macintosh HD". After I ran this command, it reset the name of the volume my user directory back to Machintosh HD. Just as a note. If you user volume name had spaces in it, you will need to use quotes around the name.
Reboot the machine, and hopefully, all will be well.
Now the Second Way.
1. Now suppose you really don't remember what the volume name was? This was the problem I had, and because I had no user files on the boot drive, I couldn't boot the computer at all. Well there is a way to creating a new Admin account on a mac without booting into the operating system. As described above, you need to boot the computer with a backup DVD, and open a terminal session.
2. Then type in:
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
Then reboot the machine. You should see the intro video and be guided through setting up an account on the machine. Then you can use this new login to boot into OSX, and fix the broken user paths using the preference panel.
What the above command does is to erase a file that OSX places in the db directory after you first setup your machine. Erasing this file (thats what 'rm' does) will make OSX assume that the computer is being booted for the first time, and it goes through the routine of setting up an admin account.

  • Why cant I login to my Mac Pro?

    Hi,
when I try to login to my Mac Pro from wakeup screensaver (it asks for the password), it no longer accepts my password.
When I erase the username on that screen and try to type it in, it does not echo the characters on the screen either.
It just "writes invisibly" moving along the cursor but the username doesnt show.
When typing the password the little round dots do show but it doesnt accept it.
Any ideas what that could be?
Id like to avoid a hard reset...
    thanks

  • How to allow multiple users login to a MAC PRO without interruption?

I have a mac pro, which runs Yosemite, (2013 module) to be used as a server. However, I have difficult to let multiple users to use the mac simultaneously.
    Objective:
One person uses the mac directly on his desktop, while the others to login remotely though VNC from PC (win 7/Linux).
The users have their own workspace, and they will not interrupt each other.
    What I tried:
I created two mange accounts on the MAC.
Account 1 was used to directly login on the mac desktop.
Account 2 was used to login to the mac from a PC though VNC. (I also tried this from a Centos workstation with the Tiger VNC viewer)
    Problem:
When account 2 is login, the location monitor will automatically change to that account as well. Both accounts shared exactly the same screen, mouse & keyboard actions. It is impossible to let multiple users to use the MAC pro simultaneously without interruptions.
If I use "hdiutil attach" to mount a dmg file though SSH with account 2, the folder will automatically show in the local desktop login with account 1.
    Question:
I read something about the "Per-user screen sharing". It says, "You can remotely log into a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login." Is it possible to do this from a PC or Linux client?
If the problem is simply due to the poor functionality of the build-in VNC service in Yosemite, I appreciate your help to suggest some other decent VNC server for Yosemite. I know the Vine Server (OSXvnc), but I failed to install it on the mac because it is incompatible with the Yosemite.
Does the SSH is supposed to work in this way in OSX? I mean the local account can see the folder mounted by another account though SSH.
If any specific version of Yosemite is required to allow multiple users to access a mac simultaneously? Just as the win 7 professional allow only one user to login in at each time. But with the remote desktop server of windows, multiple users are able to use the same computer at the same time without any problem.
If you familiar with any of the above questions, please help. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
I know the best way to get the solution is to direct call the apple support. However, it is really not easy to call them. Because it always results with long waiting time and then the people pick up the phone will transfer my call to an expert who will make me to describe the problem again.
Since I'm not interested in the technique details of all the problems, it is also grateful if you would provide a direct instruction to let me setup the computer for the purpose.
Thanks you very much for your kindly help.

I cannot help with the screen sharing, although I have just tried it with a RealVNC client on an iPad and it seemed to work OK.
However on the disk showing on all users desk tops have you unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" check box? You can check the drives permissions with CMD i command.

  • Microsoft Ofiice X - Startup Failure on Mac Pro running Leopard

On starting up my mac pro this morning, Entourage failed to start up, stalling at the product license panel that pops up just before launching the application fully. I found the same problem occurs with all the other applications in Office X (Word, Powerpoint and Excel). I uninstalled and re-loaded Office X and the fault continues. I upgraded to Leopard when it was launched so do not think this is the problem.
Does anybody have an idea what could be causing the problem and, this is my main concern, will Time Machine have saved details of all my contacts and recent emails in Entourage as i have some important emails that I need to recover

Hi. I have just set up a server system and users can login fine on all the imacs. However, When a user comes to login on a mac pro, they get this message:
The home folder of this user account is on a afp or smb server. Please contact the system administrator. This happens as soon as they press login.

    Hi
On the MacPro what is in the DNS Servers field in Network Preferences? Compare what is there with what is in the same area on the iMacs that can successfully log in. Where are they getting their IP addresses from?

  • Mac Pro Mouse Lagging and Sound Skipping

My Mac Pro 1's mouse is lagging and the sound is stuttering.
I took it into the Apple store and they ran all the tests and had it pinned to a RAM issue and a graphics card issue.
I upgraded the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770 and upgraded the RAM then. It has a new hard drive in it, and is running snow leopard as well. All of this has improved it, but it is still creating the same problems.
What is left to be done?

You should absolutely contact Apple immediately. This does not sound like trivial problem and is probably indicative of an imminent total failure.

  • Mac Pro boot failure

Hello everybody. I recently bought a new Mac Pro (2x Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2,4GHz, running OS X 10.6.8) and just encountered a very strange error at bootup. 1 out of 10 system boots take up much longer and end up in having the desktop with a light blue layer on the screen, being able to move the mouse cursor but not click on any item. I'm using the magic mouse + trackpad + wireless keyboard but have also tried to use a cable mouse with no success. The only way to shutdown the system is to force a power down. Then the computer will boot up fine again several times. Then again, the same error occurs. This is what the kernel log says. Have a look at the bold line: this is where the system hangs much longer at startup (I'm using verbose mode at startup).
Thank you in advance for your help!

Okay, I just came a step further with troubleshooting but still hope someone may help me out of this.
Everytime I shutdown the system before the error occurs again on bootup, the shutdown messages contain something like "AppleBluetooth ..." after unmounting all disks - unfortunately I cannot find this message in the logfiles but it's there on shutdown (using verbose mode) just before the system halts. Then, the next boot will lead to the mentioned problems. If I shutdown the system and the message does not appear, everything's going to be fine on bootup.
There must be something wrong with the wireless keyboard + magic trackpad:

On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

I managed to boot the computer and get the desktop to show. I now have a "repaired" computer. There are several problems that have cropped up. One is that I can only start up now in Safe Boot mode. Is there a way to turn it off? Also, I do not have a sound list, so I can't access anything requiring audio. Google Chrome only shows up as a white screen. Pictures that loaded before don't load in browsers, etc. Any suggestions? I figure I should reinstall Mac OS Lion for starts, maybe even do a mirror backup and reformat the drive. I think this drive has turned into scrambled eggs...what a headache!

  • Mac Pro won't boot, kernel panic at boot, graphics card failure.

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.

    HI,
*but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.*
If you haven't done so, boot from your install disk and run the Apple Hardware Test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684
Also, you can boot from your install disk and check the startup disk for errors that might need repairing.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:

  • Mac Pro Display flicker & failure to boot

Hello people who are smarter than me.
I have a 2008 Mac Pro 3.2/ 8CX 8800GT with the original Geforce video card installed.  When I turn the machine on I get a grey screen with a black bar at the top, with no evidence of an actual boot (such as a darker grey apple in the middle of the screen.
After a minute or so, the screen retains the form of the black and white horizontal bar at the top but adds a rapidly cycling/strobing organge red and yellow flicker reminiscent of the old Monty Python crazy title screens....  It looks like this if you blink fast enough... or take a still photo.
I live in Haiti, where a fair amount of dust is constantly invading my tower, so I've had dust related issues before with memory... THis time, I don't think it's that.  I've cleaned out the tower with pressurized air, reseated the memory and reseated the video card as well, to no advantage.  The problem first came when the computer was working fine and while my daughter was opening a page on Firefox the screen just started jittering with this little color show.  At the time, though, you could still see the desktop behind all the flickering.  Now the computer doesn't seem to even boot.  If I have to fly to the states to fix this, I'd love to not have to haul the whole machine, so if we can get this down to a couple likely parts that I could travel with, test and replace, that would be great.  This is a hardware issue, right? Would video card failure make sense of this AND the failure to boot?  AND if I do replace it, is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit still the ticket?  If you help me, you'll be helping a lot of Haitians too, as I use this computer for humanitarian work with the Apparent Project.  Help me Obi Geeks, you're my only hope!

Okay, so after doing all of the above, the computer still takes between 40 seconds and 1 minute or so to boot up, and the VersionCue messages still appear. However I discovered that the "kdcmond cannot retrieve..." messages disappeared after I disabled my ethernet connections. So at least I know that that had nothing to do with the extended boot-up time.
I have heard that the more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot due to the RAM count. Since I have 10 GB, maybe this is why?
I've included the most recent Console messages below:

  • Mac Pro cold boot failure rate at 50%

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
I do hear a chime, but in the failed situation, it never progresses to the login screen.
I've reset the pram a few times, this doesn't seem to fix anything, as the system always boots if you try enough times (knock on wood).
I've verified the s.m.a.r.t. status and the disk, it all reports back as fine.
I am writing this post from a "safe boot" hope to see if that works on the next cold boot.
Other posts on this forum suggest it may be a weak pram battery so I will try that, the computer is getting on in years. However a similar post on this forum was marked as answered because the problem reported stated it did not chime from the external speakers. I don't care about that! So here's a new thread about documenting and hopefully solving the actual problem.

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
Every hard restart freeze, and can guarantee you end up with
corrupt caches, corrupt file system, corrupt directory.
Safe Boot is not effective in such cases, fsck from single user mode has a better chance.
Booting from another hard drive, install your bought copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory (it has deep scavenge files also).
The longer you continue to do just Safe Boot and continue using it, the more trouble and less likelihood of being able to repair the drive.
SMART is not smart enough, it tells you about the past, not what could likely happen, or if you have had bad sectors and I/O errors.
Have bootable backup clones and a drive that is a clean Apple OS and drivers that isn't used except for repairs and maintenance. Don't rely on just Apple Disk Repair.

  • Has anyone experience Mac Pro Server RAID card failure?

RAID card of our company's Mac Pro server broke twice in less than 12 months, resulting in our server being out of office for more than 11 weeks for repair. I really would like to know if we are just unlucky or if this kind of hardware failure happened also to other people?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
I know it's no consolation to you but judging from my experience I think you've been unlucky.
I've installed Apple RAID Cards in numerous XServes and MacPros at many sites and apart from the rare battery failure they've all gone OK and are still working as intended AFAIK.
    HTH?
