Login hanging!!

I'm trying to login to a user account which results in the boot up hanging. Input user name and password and press enter, it starts, then the spotllight icon appears in the top right of the screen, but nothing else happens. No menu bar, not a thing. It just sits there in boot limbo.
Now the funny thing is that when I login as the admin, there is no problem.
Any suggestions? Its a 1st generation G5 running 10.4.11. No Modificatons of any kind.

I have had this same issue on several machines. I havent traced it down to one thing yet but trashing the desktop, finder and dock preference files usually solves it. One one machine I had to also delete the spotlight index. Very odd thing that only seems to target our Mac Pros. All of our other machines never experience it.

  • Solaris 10 x86 login hanging

    We are experiencing some odd behavior with our Solaris 10 machine. We installed it in January and everything was working fine up to about March. Since March we've been seeing an issue with the login hanging. This happens when running command via rsh or ssh (e.g. "ssh [machine] ls -la"). It also occurs if you try and telnet to the machine.
    We currently have a script that polls several machines in our environment including this one using "ssh [machine] uname -a" just to make sure the machine is up and running.
    About once a week we can't login to the machine with the id we always use, builder. However logging in as root still works. Rebooting fixes the problem every time. Any ideas as to what might be the problem or how to debug it?

  • SQLPlus login hangs because of "Thread 1 cannot allocate new log"

    Hi to everybody!
    Could you please give an advice how to overcome the following situation.
    In my 10GR2 database I have destination for archive logs placed in ASM disk group. When suddenly this disk group becomes overfilled I can not login into the database even "/as sysdba" locally. The best solution is to switch log_archive_dest_1 to some other place, but as I mentioned I even can not login into the database to do this change. Another solution is to free some space in ASM disk group by deletion of some archive logs. But if I have a Standby DB and if I delete some archive logs I'll lose my Standby DB.
    I will be glad to hear your real life's experience :)
    Thank's in advance!

    Dear Sybrand, I've used search button a lot. I'd be happier if you had pointed where the documentation has something useful for my situation. May be you meant
    an alternate destination for archive logs, but as you know there is no exact upper bound for the "REOPEN" parameter. So switching can take undetermined time.
    Seems to me I've made a full description of my situation.
    I was not able to login to the database - this is a fact. My database is quite up to date (PSU 4) and OS environment is set correctly. So i don't believe that my case is something very uncommon.
    Let me make several clarification:
    1)I can not extend LUN on wich ASM disk group has been created, because this operation requires restart of the host - not an online operation.
    2) I can not move archive logs from my ASM disk group to ether another one or to the file systems, because a) I can not login into the database neither through SQLPLUS nor through RMAN 2) in 10GR2 "asmcmd" doesn't have an ability to copy files ("cp")
    3) Let's imagine (it can be) that connectivity with standby had been broken before my incident took place and none of the archive logs was shipped to the Standby site. This exclude an option of deleting some of archive logs through the "asmcmd" and "rm" because none of them were applied to a standby.
    The only solution I used is to find some idle opened consoles in a SCREEN (linux) and use them. But this method is not quite reliable.
    P.S. When I said "SQLPlus login hangs" I meant "/as sysdba", not just simple login.. It is clear that simple login will fail.

  • Network account logins hang and spinning ball in Mavericks

    Hello,
    All of a sudden on Monday, 11/3/14, I started getting reports from Mac users that they were running into the spinning ball of death (SBOD) during login. The Macs in question are all running OS X 10.9 (between 10.9.3 and 10.9.5), and bound to active directory through directory utility, and the accounts being used to login are active directory/network accounts. The hardware is identical for all users as well (15" Macbook Pro, 16GB RAM, 2.0GHz Core i7 CPU)
    I haven't been able to come up with much rhyme or reason to this yet as not all of my Mac users have been affected, and some are having to wait longer than others. I'm suspecting it is something with my Active Directory setup, but have not been able to find much useful information the the Windows Event Log. However, I'm not completely sure that's where the issue lies either because some of the MB Pros will sit at the login screen with the SBOD before the user has even tried typing their username.
    What I'm trying to figure out is where should I be looking in Console for any hints at what might be going on or hanging up the boot process? I seem to have a lot of entries being created during the login process, but I'm not as familiar with Console as I should be for troubleshooting this so I'm hoping for some community guidance.
    One thing I did find that didn't help was removing one of the search paths. That path does not exist on our machines so that isn't the issue.
    Thank you in advance for your assistance

    So I've done some snooping with Wireshark and the Mac is sending IGMP requests like crazy while it appears to be hung up. Almost non-stop outbound to port 11111. This only seems to happen with Macs that are joined to the domain. I'm using a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. It seems to have problems over Wifi though too, but haven't analyzed that traffic yet to verify it's the same IGMP requests. If I disable wifi and remove the Thunderbolt Ethernet from Network in System Preferences, then reboot, then the system seems to boot quickly.
    I found another topic about Thunderbolt Ethernet and IGMP kernel panics, but I don't seem to be having any panics. It's just that the system will hang for 10 minutes before going to the desktop, and then possibly longer before it will show any icons.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Extremely slow login hanging during synchronization

    Hi,
    I have several clients all working quite happily with mobile accounts but one user is experiencing excessive login times. The home dir is around 6-7GB in size with a decent 100x connection to the server. This used to work fine then one day (with no obvious changes made) login started hanging during synchronization. It hangs while scanning for differences before even getting to downloading/uploading new or modified files. I checked what files it stuck on and tried removing them but it just started hanging on other files. I also tested network connections and tried logging in on another machine but with no joy. I suspect there is a cache or preference that is corrupt but I'm not sure where/which one. Can anyone suggest anything?
    Thanks in advance.

    I have the same issue - but I am just using portable home directories. It only affects 1 user (out of 12) - and their login process takes up to 2-3 minutes - whereas everyone else is lightning fast (<10 seconds). I have repaired permissions on the server using disk utility. I don't know what else to try though.

  • Keychain Login hangs systen after wake from sleep

    On more than one occasion I awaken my machine from sleep to find a prompt that some application is requesting the password for my login keychain. Upon entering it, Nothing happens and further investigation shows that a number of applications in the background are unresponsive. I am able to quit some naturally and others I must force quit. However, I have no way of dismissing the keychain windows and they just hang there with no other option. I have tried CMDOPTESC but nothing comes up. I also tried launching Terminal and Activity monitor in the hopes of killing those processes but these programs never launch.
    My only recourse is to force a shutdown with the power button.
    This only seems to happen if the keychain is locked when I wake it from sleep. I prefer to have the keychain locked during sleep so that my keychain data is not vulnerable if theft were to occur.
    I have now verified and repaired permissions on my keychain (permissions were wrong) so I will see if that helps. This problem started shortly after updating to 10.6 and never occurred in 10.5.
    Thanks for any help you can provide.
    -Scott

    I have been experiencing that I cannot wake my system back up from overnight "sleep".
    So I have been holding in the power button and shutting down and powering system on again.
    This morning my system was sleeping and I could move the cursor accross both screens.
    I tried cmd-opt-esc to no avail.
    So this time I clicked the power button instead of holding it in. The windows prompted me to enter my password and it worked this time.
    TEST 1: I just tested "sleep" for about 45 minutes and my system woke up to the password window.
    The problem has appeared when I left my system in "sleep" overnight.
    TEST 2: Leave system in "sleep" overnight.

  • Phantom disk space, Large Swapfiles, and Login Hanging

    When getting the info from the primary drive on our Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 it says that over 150 GB of 250 GB are taken up. However when I go to the root and calculate all the sized they only add up to just about 48GB. This is including all invisible files and directories. I have also been told that there are over 2 million files in the root parition but I don't see them anywhere!
    Also, I've noticed that the majority of space is taken up by about a dozen 1GB swap files. I was under the impression that these should never breach 80 MB.
    Alongside these two issues we've also been having numerous problems with users logging in. The Xserve hosts user accounts using Workgroup Manager which are accessed using one of our 21 PowerMac G5's. Lately, and seemingly randomly, when a user logs in using their network account the computer will hang indefinitely which the striped progress bar chugging away. When the machine is restarted they sometimes can log in, and sometime they can't while others can with no problem. This has started without warning and to multiple computers.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
    This is really for 10.4 Server but it should work for 10.3. If you are comfortable with terminal then issue this command:
    sudo du -chxd 1 / (supply the password when prompted)
    It takes a bit of time but it will show you disk usage for all directories visible and invisible that exist on your hard drive. I know you’ve said you’ve already done this but then you seem to be confused about 2 million files that you don’t see? If you see swap files delete them, restart the server afterwards.
    If your server is an OD Master as you seem to be saying it is ie: network accounts, then usually log in problems are down to a problem with DNS. You could issue the host command on the server and see what it returns. It should look something like this:
    Last login: Mon Apr 23 21:36:45 on console
    Welcome to Darwin!
    User-iBook:~ user$ host server.pretendco.org.net
    server.pretendco.org.net has address 172.16.16.254
    User-iBook:~ user$ host 172.16.16.254
    254.16.16.172.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer host172-16-16-254.in-addr.soadomain.com.
    User-iBook:~ user$
    Sometimes the LDAP database can get a bit screwed so demoting to Standalone and repromoting back to Open Directory and rebinding the clients usually sorts it. Workgroup Manager can be used to edit the relevant database but you could spend a long time finding which setting you need to delete. Don’t forget to export users and groups and make a note of any managed preferences before doing this as demoting to Standalone scrubs the directory node. Home folders are not affected. Once you repromote to OD Master, reimport users and groups, redefine a password policy as passwords are not saved and relocate home folders, apply any managed preferences after that.
    On client macs having a problem you could run dscl in interactive mode to see if they are picking up LDAP services correctly. Consult the manual for dscl in terminal for usage. Hope this helps

  • [SOLVED] Gnome login hangs on the first try

    Since this past weekend, when I try to log into gnome, it accepts my password and greys out the password entry box, but just sits there forever. If I hit escape it aborts properly, and the second try always works. Where should I be looking to see what's going wrong the first time?
    I'm also having another, more serious problem that may be related: whenever the "Authentication Required" window pops up for a settings change or mounting another disk, it gives me the same greyed-out hang. But trying again doesn't work, since cancelling it cancels the attempt altogether - the next try just hangs again. As it is I can only do any root operations through the command-line; gnome is totally neutered by this. So -- what is this gksu-like functionality of gnome 3 properly called, and how do I debug it? Does it have a log somewhere I should look for?
    Last edited by jorenko (2014-03-25 11:02:19)

    I've restarted polkitd on the command-line without --no-debug, and it shows NO relevant information at all. After cancelling the grayed-out dialog, I get:
    Error performing authentication: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Cancelled: Authentication dialog was dismissed by the user (polkit-error-quark 1)
    21:54:02.838: Operator of unix-session:2 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action org.freedesktop.policykit.exec for unix-process:10885:60499253 [bash] (owned by unix-user:jorenko)
    But there's nothing from when I entered my password and the graying-out began.
    Interestingly, when I used --replace to replace the polkitd that systemd had started for me, I got only command-line auth (gnome wouldn't launch the dialog at all, and "pkexec echo hi" gave me a command-line password prompt), which actually worked. But when first stopping the systemd version, then running it again manually, I got the above result.

  • Network User Login Hangs at 'loginwindow' Occasionally

    The client is a macbook pro (2012) with 10.8.5, the server is a mac mini also running 10.8.5 (w/ OSX Server).
    Network user logins usually work fine.  About 10% of the time, however, the loginwindow displays a spinning beachball endlessly after the name/password are supplied.  The workaround is to login to the client via ssh and 'kill -HUP' the user's loginwindow process; then the next login attempt will work.
    Examining logs, I find that the 2nd through 4th lines of the following sequence of messages appear on the client in the case of the above failure (in the case of a successful login, only the first line appears)...
        Apr 26 08:20:06 whbbook.local WindowServer[153]: Display 0x04248a6a: MappedDisplay Unit 2; ColorProfile { 2, "Thunderbolt Display"}; TransferFormula (1.000000, 1.000000, 1.000000)

    Google reveals nothing helpful for the search phrase 'SystemUIServer CGSCopyWindowShape'.  I suspect the underlying cause of the symptom has to do with the fact that SystemUIServer ended up with a NULL window.
    I've already done the usual 'couurtesy' steps of a disk permission repair and a safe boot on both machines.
    Any interpretation of this, or recommendations?

    This machine was in the box a couple of weeks ago, and the server & OS is a completely fresh install with all new users, connecting to a new SAN for storage. Sessions are AFP. We're using network home directories stored on the SAN.
    I'm looking for suggestions on what might be wrong, and where I might start debugging the xscertd-helper errors.
    Thanks!
    R.

    Okay, some progress. I started looking around for the error message in Google and ran into this posting: Replica Issues
    This seemed to suggest that a person with a replication problem was getting almost exactly the same kind of errors. Between that and the fact that I was seeing some errors related to contacting one of my replica servers, I decided to nuke the replica and see what happened. As a result, the xscert-helper error seems to have cleared up and I'm no longer seeing any warnings related to the replica server, either.
    Next step will be to recreate the replica and see whether the errors recur.

  • After update to 10.6.8 standard login hangs

    After the update to 10.6.8 I cannot login anymore with my standard login account (no administration rights). However the login with the administration account works fine and the MacBook Pro works well. To be more precise: the login works so far (password accepted), but afterwards when the desktop becomes visible the cursor is showing only the coloured circle and no further actions are possible. Furthermore the dock shows not the applications I am used to (seems to be re-initialized somehow) and some apps have been replaced with question marks. As I said: the administrator login works fine.
    The harddisk application shows no errors as well as the TechTool Deluxe.
    It is a MacBook Pro Mid 2009.

    Here comes the/my solution:
    Remove Sophos Antivirus
    Thanks to boojum's remarks in https://discussions.apple.com/message/15480849#15480849 !
    Don't forget to use Sophos' deinstall package: /Macintosh HD/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg
    Nevertheless, some settings have been re-initialized (no complete list!):
    - Dock
    - Language has been reset to English only
    - Expose & Spaces
    (- probably all personal settings?)

  • App Store Login Hangs

    I would like to upgrade to Mavericks.  When I am prompted by the App Store to sign in, I type my Apple ID and Password, at which point it simple hangs with the little spinning wheel, until I click cancel.  Any suggestions?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

    [2009-12-07T10:59:04.645-08:00] [WLS_Spaces] [ERROR] [] [oracle.webcenter.webcenterapp.internal.view.webapp] [tid: [ACTIVE].ExecuteThread: '2' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] [userId: weblogic] [ecid: 0000ILeW_Ss2bMK5qVh8iY1B7KwH00000F,0] [APP: webcenter] [[

    at oracle.webcenter.webcenterapp.internal.view.security.WCAuthorizationHandler.handleAuthorizationFailure
    (WCAuthorizationHandler.java:62)
    STEPS
    The issue can be reproduced with the following steps:
    1.     Install of WebCenter.
    2.     Start the Node Manager and Managed Servers.
    3.     Access WebCenter Spaces URL:
    http://server:8888/webcenter/spaces
    4.     Attempt to login as weblogic user.
    Here the login hangs.
    Cause
    The domain system-jazn-data.xml file is missing all the security information for WebCenter.
    The file should have entries like this:
    <policy-store>
    <applications>
    <application>
    <name>webcenter</name>
    <app-roles>
    <app-role>
    <name>s8bba98ff_4cbb_40b8_beee_296c916a23ed#-#Administrator</name>
    <guid>A03A67D1E43711DEBF8B15EA0015534D</guid>
    <class>oracle.security.jps.service.policystore.ApplicationRole</class>
    <members>
    <member>
    <class>weblogic.security.principal.WLSUserImpl</class>
    <name>weblogic</name>
    </member>
    </members>
    But in this case the file is missing the security entries for WebCenter like the above.
    Reviewing more entries in the WebCenter Spaces diagnostic log (WLS_Spaces_diagnostic.log) there was another error in the log that indicated file permission errors:
    [2009-12-07T10:53:15.966-08:00] [WLS_Spaces] [WARNING] [JPS-04085] [oracle.jps.deployment] [tid: [ACTIVE].ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] [ecid: 0000ILeVDiF2bMK5qVh8iY1B7KwH000000,0] [APP: webcenter] [arg: oracle.security.jps.JpsRuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck (Permission denied)] Migration of codebase policy failed. Reason: oracle.security.jps.JpsRuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck (Permission denied).
    While checking the permissions on the /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck file it was noted that it was owned by root user and oracle user did not have permissions on the file.
    Solution
    1.     Shutdown the Node Manager and Managed Servers.
    2.     Change the ownership of the temporary file in /tmp directory to be owned by the user that was used to install WebCenter and that is being used to start WebCenter:
    In this case the file name is: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck
    But in your system the name can be different. But the name should be like:
    /tmp/jazn-data-NNNNNNNNNxml.lck
    3.     Ensure the user that was used to install WebCenter has privileges to read, write, and update the above file.
    If needed give grants on the file to the user that was used to install WebCenter.
    4.     Restart WebCenter.
    5.     Re-Test the issue.
    the problem is that i applied the solution but it is not working with me .if i grant (oracle) user which is used to install webcenter a privilege on /tmp/ folder,after restart everything become a in a big mass , that's because there is some files which belongs to root and mustn't be granted to oracle (this is as i understand maybe its wrong) .and if i grant and it is already granted full permission to (oracle) user on the file (jazn-data-NNNNNNNNNxml.lck) it is still not working and XML files is zero size .i do this on webcenter server (host2) and also on soa server (host1) which have admin server .
    is there any advise ? am i missing something ? it is really a big problem to me as we suppose to go live next week !!!

    Joel, in a different posting was able to help me out.
    Below is the steps I used to create a new admin account to by pass the one that seemed to be bad. Everything seems to be working for me now. Thanks for your help.
    alter user FLOWS_020200 account unlock;
    connect FLOWS_020200/apex
    begin
    wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(p_security_group_id=>10);
    wwv_flow_fnd_user_api.create_fnd_user(
    p_user_name => 'admin2',
    p_email_address => '[email protected]',
    p_web_password => 'admin2') ;
    end;
    alter user FLOWS_020200 account unlock;
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Macbook hangs during login - airport extreme issue?

    My new macbook hangs during startup. I have an airport extreme 802.11n version base station. My macbook is configured to talk to this base station.
    If I power down the airport extreme, login works just fine. If I power on the airport, login hangs.
    Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi
    It is connected through wireless. I have installed the 802.11n drivers on it as well, doesn't help.

    We are getting this same error when logging into our portal - on NW 7.0 Enhancement Pack 2.  We don't get it all the time.  Most of the time login is very quick.  But sometimes, the login hangs for 5 minutes before letting someone in -
    with nothing being output to the default trace file.  But sometimes, the user is refused and the following stack trace appears.

    The user then tries again and can get in.  When one person is hanging, we are all hanging for a while.  Then everyone clears up at once.  I don't know if that error is related to the hang, but since I found this thread, I thought I'd ask
    if it ever got resolved.  The last post to this thread discussed a property, but ours is set correctly when seen in the Visual Administrator.
    We do use Single Sign On for most users, but this behaviour is happening when we set Negotiate=false and login with our username and password or when doing SSO, so I don't think it is related to that.
