Login issue on mountain lion

When booting from a powered off state on my late 2010 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, one of my login accounts (the one that I actually want/need to use) comes up with a question mark and a message that states "update needed" as shown in the attached picture.  I can click on this account, enter in the password for the account I want (which is my first and last name) and then the machine seems to login for a bit, and then the account I want access to and my account picture show up as one of the choices and i can log in to my profile normally.  Anyone know how to actually do whatever required update the picture i attached is asking for (third account shown in the picture below)?  Thanks.  I just recently did a clean install of Mountain Lion since I am weird like that, lol

Thanks for the advice, however I followed it and the solution remains unresolved.
I made a copy of the .plist file and pasted it in my documents, went to the directory and put the file in the trash as described.
Upon force reboot I was redirected to the login screen again.
When I rebooted normally, it performed auto login as expected.
After rebooting normally the second time (I did not try this with the force reboot), I returned to the directory you suggested to replace the file with the backup I had copied before.  When I returned to the directory, the .plist file had magically manifested without my placing it back.  It seems as if the .plist file is autogenerated from some other setting...
Any additional suggestions?
Thanks!

  • Start up Issues with Mountain Lion?

Having start up issues with Mountain Lion. Gray Screen and nothing happens.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Tap to click not working properly in Mountain Lion. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

The tap to click does not work with mountain lion as it did before the mountain lion install. I purchased a brand new imac in August of 2011 and got a wireless keyboard and selected the wireless trackpad instead of a mouse.  The trackpad worked wonderful pre upgrade with tap to click. Now after the install of the newest beast, I have to actually press the trackpad rather than a slight tap. I have carpel tunnel and this is causing great stress upon my hand. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

Perhaps, I was not clear enough.
I have an imac purchased in Aug. 2011 which came with Lion 10.6 (two uprades before mountain lion)
Recently, I just purchased a macbook pro retina with Mountain Lion
On my imac, my settings allowed me to "tap to click" everything EXCEPT the initial log in at the star up of my imac, again running Lion 10.6
On my macbook pro retina which has Mountain Lion, I set up the "tap to click" option, but notice that a "hard" click was neccessary when trying to click things. I thought this was a macbook thing (my first one) so I went and upgraded my imac to Mountain LIon, BIG MISTAKE! Now both my imac AND my macbook only have limited "tap to click" options. Before mountain lion I could "tap" to highlight and select text, tap and drag, and many other thiings that Mountain Lion has disabled.
I am truly surprised that no one has noticed this MAJOR issue.
Is there a way to uninstall this update, similar to how on a PC you can go back to a restore point.
On another note even the way PREVIEW has changed is less user friendly, there used to be icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, now I have to double tap and select the option I would like to switch between contacts and thumbnails. This is really annoying and is causing me time when reviewing files.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I did go to system preferences -> trackpad -> select tap to click
In fact almost all of the trackpad functions have been selected.

Has Apple done anything to address the issue of Mountain Lion's inability to support Epson printers? I have a Stylus Photo RX620 that now is useless. I am not a computer geek so would rather not try to do an uninstall of Mt. Lion and go back to S.Leopard

Have you tried to open System Preferences, then Print & Scan and then try to Add + a printer?
I have an Epson RX580 and am using OS X 10.8.2 and it is working as a (Bonjour) printer.  My Epson RX580 is plugged into my AirPort Extreme and I can print over my wireless network to the RX580.  However, I do not see any Scan options with this setup.
Anyone know anything about getting the scanning portion of the RX580 to work over the network like the printing function does with my Airport Extreme?  Or can I not "share" a scanner over the USB port on the Airport Extreme?  I know, kind on topic/off topic - but I think it fits under OS questions better.
    Thanks for your advice!

  • How do I shut down from the login window in mountain lion using the keyboard

how do I shut down/sleep/restart from the login window in mountain lion using the keyboard?

Hi Thomas, thanks for your reply.
Yes in standard start-up as it is and in recovery mode I still get the same message about Disk Utility being unable to repair the disk so I should back-up and restore.
Some posters have said that booting into safe mode should unmount the installer and allow rebooting back into Lion, that would allow me to back-up the files properly, as my last back up was (as is often the way) not too recent.
But I think your suggestion looks more likely to be he correct way to do it, and I'll take the hit on any data that I may lose.
    Thanks again.

  • TS1550 Time Machine issue with Mountain Lion.  Can you help?

I have an Iomega Mac Companion used as an external backup drive for my Imac running Mountain Lion. After launching Time Machine, I got an error message that said the backup couldn't' be completed because an error occurred while creating the backup folder.  I rebooted and everything was fine for 24 hours.  Since then, I get the same error message even after another reboot.  In Time Machine preferences it says "oldest backup none" and "latest backup none."
    Any suggestions?
    GR

Finally have it solved!!  Sort of...  I spoke with Mac support on two occasions and they were extremely helpful.  Thought the issue was with the firewire 800 connection.  Switched to a USB connection and everything worked great...for about 24 hours.  Then had the same error messages.  Chatted with Iomega tech support and they finally admitted that there are known issues with Mountain Lion, there is no work around and they have no intention of making it compatible with 10.8.
I'm returning the drive today.  Thanks for your help and suggestions.  Suggestions for a decent back up hard drive that will work with Mountain Lion?

  • Panasonic HDC-TM900 issues with Mountain Lion.. Not compatible??

Hi, I can't see any of my video files I recorded onto my camcorder once plugged in via USB. I have a Panasonic HDC-TM900. It work fine before I updated to Mountain Lion.
When I plug my HDC-TM900 camcorder into my MacBook Pro, all the files on the camera Memory and SD card could be seen. All I did then was copy and paste the MTS files from either the Camera Memory or SD card to my desktop and convert them in iSkySoft. ( this all worked fine before I updated to Mountain Lion.
I tried plugging in the Panasonic into my iMac and MacBook this still run the older OS and all the files can be seen with no problem.
So I have concluded that it could only my an issue with Mountain Lion that it does not see or pickup certain files off my Panasonic camcorder
Can someone help ? I  am very desperate to find answers.

I can't tell you why, but I can tell you that Apple published the list of supported hardware on its website quite a while ago. The oldest MacBook Pro model that supports Mountain Lion is the Mid/Late 2007 model. You have the late 2006 model.
Details are (and have been) here:

  • MBA hangs on login screen after mountain lion upgrade

I have a mid 2011 macbook air. Ever since I did the upgrade to mountain lion last week, I have had about 10 instances where it hangs on the login screen. I bring it up from sleep, I see the login but when I enter my password and hit enter, it just hangs with the login box grayed. I can hit the cancel button and it gives me the ability to interact with the login box again, but will not log in. on all but one of these instances I have had to restart the machine. I have timed it to 5 minutes twice before restarting the machine to get back in. This never happened with lion. Anyone else have this issue?

    I have issues also.
With a samba share on Linux, ML can see it correctly, but on my Windows Home Server 2011, if i do smb://"server address" i receive and error saying that the share dows not exist on server. Before on Lion i had a list of my shares. On finder the Server apears with a "/" which i can not open.
If i do smb://"server address/share" is works correctly, but i would like to have tha before behaviour. Besides this the only issue that i found after upgrading is the WHS 2011 Lauchpad could not sign in (before in Lion was working).
Any ideas on how to solve this?

  • Comcast Issues with Mountain Lion Mail Client (v.6)

I am having same issues receiving my e mail in Mail in my comcast account.  I did have google but deleted the e mail and even my entire google account to hopefully resolve problem.  Problem remains.  I have tried so many things and am waiting to hear from a tech.  Was on phone with Apple for hours on Sat. morning but no resolution yet.  I am wondering if it is an i cloud issue.

    Hi,
This thread was created by someone who had issues with their Google Mail not being fetched by the Mail app in Mountain Lion.
Their presumption was that it was the Mail App.
It turns out Google have had a problem and it not only effects Macs using Mountain Lion.
This Google Issue should in no way effect the fetching or sending of Mail via your ISP (Comcast) Login.
I don't see any info in your post that links your Comcast account to iCloud so it is difficult to follow your reasoning that iCloud is involved.
This means you have a different issue to the Original Poster.
Unfortunately it is not likely to get addressed here  (Broadly speaking the presumption is that a different question should have it's own thread)
It can be difficult to judge sometimes if you have a different issue or not.
I would suggest starting your own thread.

  • Issues with mountain lion upgrade

Has anyone had any issues when upgrading from snow leopard to mountain lion?
I upgraded on Sunday and since have had some issues with access to the Internet. The only way I can get it is by switching off wifi and back on again.
This is happening on both admin account and my sons profile. Though interestingly when I try and access the parental control panel for his account, I get some system errors.
Any help or support would be appreciated.

I also upgraded from Snow to Mountian.  I can bring up google search results but can't load any web pages.  My Mac Pro was working great with Snow never had any issues with internet.  Saw a post with a solution of disabling auto proxy but that doesnt work.  The only way I can load a web page is if I restart my Mac open up Safari then I can usually bring up one web page and then I can not load any more.  I cant connect to the App store either.  I dont know how I will be able to download a patch from Apple now.

  • Strange Application Issues after Mountain Lion Upgrade!

I'm having, what I believe to be, strange issues with a clean install of Mountain Lion from 10.6.8
It's for my boss' computer at work so I can't afford to have it down for very long at a time. It's hard to pinpoint the issue(s).
    Computer:
    Mac Pro - Early 2009
    OS X 10.8.3
    2 x 2.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
The startup disk is 4x2TB RAID 5 using Apple RAID card (Firmware version: E-1.3.2.0; Hardware Revision: 2.00; Driver version: 124
The following is what happened/is happening:
    1. (Tuesday)
Created a bootable backup of system drive using Disk Utility
    Performed a Clean install
Used migration assistant to copy over applications from backup
Downloaded (from Amazon) and installed Microsoft Office 2011
Imported Addresses (including imported Previous Recipients that were imported into Contacts before exporting on old system)
Setup email & copied over mailboxes from backup
Moved all files back onto the system (User folders)
Everything worked fine from Wednesday - Sunday.
    Problems reported to me (Sunday)
"Chinese characters" on save dialogue box in Microsoft Excel
Mail crashed while dragging a photo from safari to it
After a restart, Mail, all Microsoft Office apps, and Final Cut Pro wouldn't open.
Tried to reset preference files, but nothing worked.
    2. (Monday night)
    Performed another Clean Install
    Migrated Applications
Transferred mailboxes (not old emails at this time)
Imported same group of addresses as before into Contacts
    Installed Microsoft Office
    Moved user data back
Transferred old email mailboxes (Tuesday afternoon)
Everything worked fine Tuesday - Thursday early morning)
Problems reported to me (Thursday morning)
When typing in an email address to send an email, it didn't autofill. Mail crashed.
Mail wouldn't open. Different from last, this time it said the ~/Library/Mail folder was moved. I checked and the folder was there with everything in it fine.
The Microsoft applications that were open at the time of the Mail crash still worked, but others wouldn't open. After closing the open applications then they wouldn't open back up (same as before)
    Final Cut Pro opened fine.
Fixed Mail by deleting the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail folder.
Later found out that though Final Cut would open it would crash when loading a project and that Quicklook wouldn't work for quicktime files across the network & codecs were missing (this could have been cause by me when trying to test problems).
    3. (Sunday)
Restored from a different bootable backup I made after 2nd clean install and migrated applications.
    Repaired Permissions using Disk Utility
    Moved over Mail data
    Copied over user data
    *Didn't import the addresses
Checked to make sure all the fonts were validated and no duplicates
Everything worked fine after install and through Monday.
    Problems to me (Tuesday morning)
Microsoft Office disappeared completely from the computer. No folder in Applications or dock icons.
Slower to connect to network files
Re-installed Microsoft Office to keep work progress going.
What would be causing this peculiarity? It works after I fix it and for a little afterwards but then strange things happen.
Would repairing disk permissions on bootable backup (of 10.6.8) before using migration assistant help?
What is the best way to track down what is causing these issues?
    Thanks!

I suggest that the best way to upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion is one of the following:
    (1) Simply perform an upgrade install. This is in fact Apple's recommended approach. I am not sure why you have not yet tried that. I have done this myself successfully.
    (2) Make a backup of the working 10.6.8 system; better yet is to make two complete backups, one being a "clone," the other being a Time Machine backup. Use of two different methods gives you options should something go wrong. Then erase the original disk and install Mountain Lion, and on the first boot up run Setup Assistant (which is better than Migration Assistant) and transfer over EVERYTHING, including user accounts, settings, applications. I have also used this approach, also successfully.
You did neither (1) nor (2), but seem to have done some sort of hybrid by transfering applications and then manually moving over some mail files and moving over some user files. I don't think this is a recommended approach. It can result in permissions issues, which can cause things to "disappear" or otherwise behavior oddly.
I do not understand how your use of a RAID setup and a RAID card might affect any procedures which otherwise might work smoothly. Are you 100% certain that your RAID hardware and firmware are compatible with Mountain Lion?
Assuming that the RAID is not the issue and it behaves to the OS just like a normal disk, I would try the full disk erase and install of Mountain Lion followed by a Setup Assistant on first boot up to move over everything from your clone backup.
If this does not work, then I would erase and restore back from your clone, so you get your 10.6.8 system working again. Then I would try a simple upgrade install of Mountain Lion.
If that fails, then I would erase and install Mountain Lion with one new administrative user created who has a different user name than the person whose stuff you need to restore. Then with that new administrative user I would make sure the RAID is all up and running. Then I would use Migration Assistant to migrate over users only and would reinstall all software from scratch. If that is not to your liking, I'd as a less desirable alternative use Migration Assistant to migrate over everything, applications and users. You will have that new, extra administrative user as well as the original user(s), but that should cause no harm.

  • Illustrator cs5 selecting issue in mountain lion

I'm having a strange issue using illustrator cs5 after updating to mountain lion. I have a line of text that I rotated and copied several times so it resembles an asterisc shape * (3 lines of type fanned out over a central point). When I select 1 line of type, 2 or more lines are selecting. It happens even if I try to click in an empty area of the file (white space). The kicker is that it even happens in outline view (even in the white space). Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Not sure what is happening, but a workaround might be to put each line of type on its own layer, then lock and/or hide layers you don't want to select.

  • Strange Wi-Fi issue in Mountain Lion

    Hello Mountain Lion Gurus/Users/All,
Just yesterday I upgraded my 2009-mid-MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion (from Lion)
    I have this strange issue.
    I turn on my Wi-F
Selected my home network from the list of all the networks Mac could find. (Actually this is the network I regularly use on all my devices.)
It gets connected to my home network over Wi-Fi for 6 to 7 seconds. (I am able to browse pages, as a test, in these 6 to 7 seconds).
Suddenly message pops up saying "Connection Timeout. Could not connect to network."   Where as, I am able to browse over the same network from other devices like my iPod Touch, Android :@ Device etc.
    Please help me.
    Chandra

    Chandra,
Some people have found that setting a network location prevents this kind of problem.
In System Preferences, choose Network.  Then Edit Location, the + sign and use any name for the location.  Then select the location in the Network preferences pane.  If you haven't already, joint the wifi network.
You should also check that you haven't inadvertently messed up your settings in the advanced portion of the preferences.  While you're in there, click the button to renew your DHCP lease (in the TCP/IP tab).
