Login items help

I have installed a monitor calibration tool - ColorVision Spyder.
It creates a Login Item - "ColorVisionStartup.app". Problem is - this "item" is unchecked in my account's "Login items" but still runs at login (I can see the icon of this app briefly appearing in the dock when color profile is applied; actually, there is no difference if I check or uncheck it)!
I have checked both /System/Library/Startupitems and /Library/Startupitems and both folders are empty.
How could this application be launched?
Thanks.

That check box is only to "hide" the application when it launches. As far as I know any item in your "Login Items" list will launch at login time.

Login items are listed in the file com.apple.loginitems.plist, which is in /Users/<you>/Library/Preferences.

    If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
    Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
    It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
    This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
    A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.

    Are you using the Office for Mac 2011 version, as you need to do?  The Office for Mac 2004 is Not at all compatible with Mountain Lion, and the 2008 version has been noted to have some problems running with ML.

  • Reboot loop: Help me delete all login items with Terminal

    I updated my Macbook (5,1) from Lion to Mountain Lion and began soon thereafter to get the error that the computer had restarted after a problem. For a few days the computer would nevertheless reach desktop after a restart and could be used.
    I thought that perhaps the error came from the login items and saw on Rogue Amoeba's site that SoundSource isn't yet compatible with ML. Removing it seemed to cure the problem.
    But as of this morning the computer is stuck in a restart "loop". It shows the apple and spinner and a grey progress bar. When the bar is almost completed (a millimeter or so remaining) the computer restarts and does the same thing all over.
    I have now managed to get to the recovery partition with cmd-r. I have repaired the disk with DU and I would like to remove all login items using Terminal but haven't got a clue how to do it. I have searched but don't find good walkthroughs. So I would very much appreciate help on how to do this.
    My login items are Skype, Dropbox and iTeleport.
    Cheers and many thanks
    /p

    Thanks for the replies.
    @ mende1 - I did hold cmd-R to reach the recovery partition. How do I now leave safe mode (if it is stuck in that) and boot normally?
    @ Thomas - DU seems to be successful in repairing the disk. It doesn't report any errors - just says what it is "checking", "updating" and "adjusting" (not a very long list at all) - but it concludes with partition map appears to be OK.
    My other Mac has all my files so I don't mind reinstalling on this one, except for the fact that I would have to reinstall all the applications and I don't have them with me where I am at the moment.
    If I choose to reinstall when booted with cmd-r will it re-download or install from a local copy? Re-downloading will take forever because I only have mobile (3G) broadband here.
    Do I have any other options?
    Thanks for helping.

  • Help!!! I deleted "ituneshelper" on SystemPrefs/Accounts/login items

    Hello Apple Discussions Community.
    I deleted from Login Items, located in Accounts on System Preferences, the "iTunesHelper" item.
    I would like to retrieve this link again, but it is a part of the iTunes Package, therefore, it is not possible to add it using the "+" button.
    I would like to know if there is a command on Terminal or other way to resolve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jose Blanco.

    Hello. I know this procedure, another thing was missing, that it's necessary to drag the icon to the LoginItems window to add it. I discovered it after following your suggestion.
    Thanks!!!

  • Cannot delete login item "You cannot change this item because it's managed by your system administrator"

    We migrated a server (ldap and file serving) to some new machines, which have new names.  We've got all of the login and file sharing functionality working on the new machines, but wherever we have a mount of a share in the Login Items for a user, we can't get the old machine out of the Login Items.  It's not fatal, but it does make login take a lot longer because it has to fail first.
    We can mount the share from the new server, and save THAT in a NEW Login Item just fine -- it's just that when you click on the old defunct one the minus sign is greyed out, and the mouseover says "You cannot change this item because it's managed by your system administrator."  There is a yellow triangle next to the item in the list.  Went into the user's ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist and it's not in the file.  The /Library/Preferences don't have anything that looks like a plist of the right name.
    Where do I find it and how do I get rid of it?

    In response to ManishBhatt94's post today, I may have some information that may be useful to you. I called Microsoft's 800-642-7676 and spoke with a technical representative with questions pertaining to my particular issue. I also have friend that has the
    same issue with her computer running windows 8. A representative from my ISP told me how to go into 1)Tools, 2)Internet Options, 3)Connections, 4)LAN settings and uncheck the proxy settings box. However after restarting or shutting down my computer it reappears.
    It will also reappears while I play games on Facebook not allowing me continue until I go back into the proxy settings in LAN and uncheck the box AGAIN and AGAIN. A local owner of a computer repair shop told my friend that it was a virus. After speaking with
    Microsoft today I was told the same thing/it was more than likely a virus on my personal PC at home. As most people likely do,  I use wireless internet in my home on the affected computer. Solution; as suggested by Microsoft rep was to have the virus
    professionally removed either by someone or to use their remote service for a fee of $149 which comes with several guarantees and does not require you to re-install software or documents. I hope that my response was of some help to you. I also kept trying
    to fix this problem but wasted a lot of time. He also suggested to Google the proxy problem to see if ANYONE has any alternatives to fixing this problem!

  • How can I stop Preview from opening at startup even though it is not listed in my Login Items?

    When I log into one of my user accounts in my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion), Preview is always open. The preview window itself is not open but the application name is active in the menu bar in the top left hand corner. The Preview item on the taskbar is also lit. Both of these indicate to me that Preview is running. However, I checked my Login Items repeatedly and Preview is not even listed. I also make sure that when logging out, the "Reopen windows when logging out" is unchecked. But Preview still always opens whenever I log into this particular user account -- it does not do it in any of my other user accounts. How can I fix this?

    Thanks. I got to the bottom of it by checking Login Items. I had Flux, iTunes Helper, and Dropbox. I removed the first two from Login Items, leaving only Dropbox. However, when I rebooted and logged in, Preview was still open and Flux and iTunes Helper were back in the Login Items. To find out which application is the culprit, I looked under Flux's Preferences settings and disabled it from opening at login. I was intending to do it for every application until I find the culprit, but doing so to Flux solved the problem.

  • Script for adding a login item for all accounts in the system

    Hi,
    Thanks for reading this query. I am new to the mac environment. I have developed a java application and created an installer of this application for MAC system.I want to run this application on starting the system. So I have written an apple script for adding this application in login items and this script will run immediately after completing installation process. And the entire process is fine. But the problem is, the application is added to login items of only the user who installed the application. But I want to get available the application in the login list of all accounts created in the system. How can I achieve this? Once more thanks in advance. I am attaching my script below:
    +*tell application "System Events"*+
    +* make login item at end with properties {path:"/Applications/MyApplication.app", hidden:true}*+
    +*end tell*+

  • Weird file got added in Login Items after 10.5.8 Update

    Hi,
    I finally got a chance to apply Leopard 10.5.8 combo update to my MacBook. After the update was done, the system was restarted, and I saw Safari was bouncing at startup. The page Safari opened was one of the help file pages in iTunes with Russian. I immediately opened the System Preferences and check Login Items in Accounts, and I found the a new entry in the list (I don't remember the exact path, but it should be pretty close):
    local://Applications/iTunes/contents/resources/ru_proj/help/pgs/15375.html
    I was afraid that my machine might be infected by some virus or malware, of course I removed the entry right away, and wipe out the disk and restore my backup.
    Has anyone seen this weird problem after applying the combo update? Your help is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Don

    Thanks for the response!
    I am sure I did not put it in there, so why the installer put that page in the list is a mystery then (especially a Russian page, and I don't use iTunes on this machine either). I am still worried if there was a virus on my machine.

  • Unable to set login items in System Preferences

    Hi!
    I have a mobile account maintained by mac os x server 10.4.10. I upgraded clients to leopard. When I want to display the login items pane from System Preferences I get the following log entry:
    01.11.07 18:18:19 System Preferences[1315] * Assertion failure in -[LoginItemCell _objectValue:forString:errorDescription:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949/AppKit.subproj/NSCell.m:1338

    01.11.07 18:18:19 System Preferences[1315] Invalid parameter not satisfying: aString != nil
    The login items pane isn't shown completed. There are some fragments displayed. When I want to close System Preferences I need to "Force Quit" it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanx
    Gerhard

    Meanwhile I found a workaround.
    There is a file called "loginwindow.plist" located at ~/Library/Preferences.
    Usually the file looks like as followed:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary</key>
    <array>
    <dict>
    <key>Hide</key>
    <true/>
    <key>Path</key>
    <string>/Library/Application Support/EyeTV/EyeTV Helper.app</string>
    </dict>
    </array>
    <key>BuildVersionStampAsNumber</key>
    <integer>18892960</integer>
    <key>BuildVersionStampAsString</key>
    <string>9A581</string>
    <key>SystemVersionStampAsNumber</key>
    <integer>168099840</integer>
    <key>SystemVersionStampAsString</key>
    <string>10.5</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    You can edit this file manually by adding a <dict> entry between the <array> tag like it is done above.
    It works!
    There is only one question left: How do I specify a file path located in my home place? Using "~" as home location ends in not finding the file. Any ideas?
    Thanx

  • Losing some Login Items after upgrading to 10.6.7

    I'm pretty sure this wasn't happening until after the 10.6.7 update (I installed the Combo version). When I restart, several (actually most) of my Login Items are gone from my Login item list. I went through the process of restoring them all, and they persisted for a couple of restarts, but now it just happened again. Any ideas? I'm going to trash the plist file and start fresh and see if that helps.

    Which startup items? Are they all compatible with 10.6.7? If any are also in the Dock, right click on the application/Options - select "Open at Login."

  • How do i remove blackberry from Login items in lion?

    any idea? I'm trying to remove blackberry device manager from login item but the its checked and greyed out.

    Backup your files to a external data drive and disconnect
    Reboot the computer holding the Shift key down to enter Safe mode, the third party kernel extensions will be disabled.
    Try the BB uninstaller again and/or
    Look in your System/Library/Extensions folder for anything that has the "Blackberry" or "RIM" name in the extension (with .kext at the end of the file) and move it out of the folder.
    You may have to consult their web site for a manual uninstall method. Kext stands for Kernel extension obviously.
    the free Easy Find can help you locate the files in that folder.
    You also can Command r boot into Lion Recovery and install Lion with the
    Restoring OS X 10.5 10.6. 10.7 - simple overwrite OS method
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
    That should kick anything out of OS X itself, then it's just a matter of removing anything in the Applicaitons folder.
    If there are remnants still in your user, you can always create a new user and transfer your personal data via the root level/Users/ "shared" folder, once up, then remove the old user.

  • Preferences - Accounts - Login Items : rearrange fails, result is removal

    This should be considered a bug report, but =i'm rather new to the apple community (user for a year, but only recently trying to help in forums) i am not aware of a legitimate bug-report tool for apple.
    as the subject indicates, rearranging items in the Login Items preferences causes them to simply vanish from the list. I have about 8 items launch at startup, and some of them take a while to load (like iCal) and i'd prefer those to load at the END. the only workaround i've found is to remove them all, then add them one at a time in the order i want them to start up. this is clearly a bug.

    Hi Jared,
    You're right, this should rather be considered a bug, as it used to work perfectly well in Panther...
    Smart (?) reasons like "this is because of how launchd works" or "sending feedback requires some membership etc..." certainly do not look very "Macish", "user friendly", the way we were used to by Apple's legendary quality.
    Here is the place where to send your feedback:
    - http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
    (and many users have sent the same comments about login items, since Tiger's launch last May...)
    Thank you for helping with your own form!

  • Login items not saved

    I haven't read about this one yet so I thought I should at least mention it. Since my upgrade to 10.9 the login items for my (admin) user account are not being saved. After a reboot the list is empty again. I have re-entered them several times but that just seems a bit pointless now   Also repaired permissions on the OS X drive, just for good measure but to no avail. Login items are Mail, Messages and just one third party app: Google Chrome.
    So.... Bug or something else I should try?

    This happened to me from an out-the-box mac without any 3rd party software installed which makes me think this is a mavericks issue as opposed to anything else installed after.
    Im not trying to be a dick BTW.

  • Safari will not open as a Login Item

    All other applications set as Login Item start ok but not Safari.  Apple Support say this is as it should  be. Why? Safari worked as a Login Item under my very old OS X so why the retrograde step?  Apple Support said to set Safari's preference to Open with all windows from last session but it is still necessary to open Safari from the Dock first!  Any help?

    Hello Mr Hemphill
    Thank you for such a speedy response, I see you have been very busy today.  I too use wi-fi, which connects instantaneously and therefore I do not accept this as a valid reason especially as I did not experience this problem with my old Mac which had quite a poor wi-fi service.  And even if it were to be the case those of us who do not have slow wi-fi connection should not be penalised for the sake of those that do - all they need do is not use this option for Safari.
    When Apple Support told me that "this is as it should be" I asked why System Preferences allows Safari to be selected in the first place.  They had no answer.  I also note from previous discussions that this problem started long ago.  There must be a more valid reason.
    Best regards
    Marcus
