Login loop - Apple fixes don't work - HELP!

My iMac 20" (Core Duo) which had been running fine under 10.5.3 has suddenly died.
When I power it up, I get the login window, with my users. Logon as a user, it goes to blue screen, then goes back to the login window.
I've tried the solutions in Apple's note on recovering from the login loop after upgrading to Leopard (although my computer has been working fine after upgrading to Leopard the day after the new OS was released). Nothing works.
I am unable to force it to boot from the Install DVD - holding down 'C', 'option', or 'cmd-shift-alt-delete' are not effective in getting the iMac to boot from DVD.
I am unable to enter into safe or verbose mode at login using either cmd-S or cmd-V. Either combination simply gets me eventually to the login window, where the loop starts.
Zapping PRAM did not make any difference. In fact, I did not get the usual double-chime at all.
I was finally able to get a terminal prompt by entering ">console" as the 'other' user at login. Once there, I attempted to carry out the steps in Apple's note. However, while I am in the console mode, there is a constant stream of error messages, even as I type. By ignoring the error messages and typing, I was able to login and enter my password. I was also able to execute 'mount -uw' (without a / at the end) per Apple's note, and thereafter keyed in the launchctl and ls commands as listed in Apple's note.
However, when I key in the 'dscl....' command as listed in Apple's note, I get stuck. Error messages continue to scroll on the screen, but I do not get a further console prompt.
Seems like my iMac is hosed. Any suggestions/solutions? It's still under AppleCare so I can bring it back to Apple, but I'd like to try and solve it myself so I can safeguard the data on my harddisk.

Phew, being able to login to the other user account on the Mac was the solution. Once I managed to login to that account (had forgotten my wife's account password), I did an Archive & Install of Leopard, per this Apple support document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1413?viewlocale=en_US
The funny thing is that the Apple document was to remedy a login loop after installing Leopard on an aluminium iMac, whereas mine is the older iMac 20" Core Duo (bought in March 2007). It had been running fine after installing 10.5.3, and I really have no idea what triggered this sudden failure.
Anyway, working fine now.

  • Video's on apple site don't work anymore after Lion. Help?

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro, a ipad(1) and iphone 4. You could say I like Apple products. Temted by the advertising I upgraded my operating system to Lion. Now I have problems with some apps that don't work properly anymore and I can't make back-ups on my NAS (Lacie NetworkSpace 2) because Time Machine can't communicate anymore with my NAS. Problems that will probably be solved within weeks or months (that's what Lacie helpdesk says). Let's hope that nothing bad happens in the meantime, because I cannot make back-ups anymore and time capsule is not working anymore.
Now to my question. I discovered another bug after installing Lion. Visiting the apple.com site with my Macbook Pro I tried to look at a video on this site but the video doesn't start. When I use my iPad I can watch these video's. Also video's in iTunes work on my Macbook. Only the turorial or explanation video's on the apple site don't work anymore. Does somebody know how I can solve this problem?
I am still a happy Apply user but Lion disappoints a bit (untill now). A lot of people have problems I read. Let's hope the guys at Apple and other firms will solve them all very swiftly. For the time being I would not advise you to upgrade to Lion.
    Peter.

Sounds like you need to restore your Apple TV to factory settings.
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4367
You will need to use the "Micro USB Cable" to restore it to factory settings.
    See the article shown above.
You must unplug the power cord before connecting the ATV to your computer....

  • Apple -- Fix iDVD to work with MP3 audio! Geez...

For months now, iDVD will not burn a DVD if MP3 audio is used in either iMovie HD or iDVD 6.0.3. Apple, fix this ASAP; it's getting to be a real bore. iDVD is advertised as working with iLife, presumably this meant to include MP3 formated audio from iTunes. So come on Apple, get with the program (no pun intended) and fix this!

    ?
I am not sure where the joke is. Rendering and compression takes a good deal of time on any platform. The more compression (going to CD) the more time it's going to take. There was a podcast outlining a HD workflow and some of the trade-offs that were made so that each frame wouldn't take 3 minutes to render (keeping in mind that 60 seconds has 1,800 frames, NTSC). Real time compression cards are available, last I looked starting at the $2,000 range. So there are solutions- you just don't like them and expect Apple to do something about it, presumably within the iLife budget. Me too I suppose. But I don't really think that's going to happen.

My computer I Mac is 10.6.5 I think but the issue was when I update it ask me for version 10.8.5 that was mountain lion wich I bought it for 19.99 Iand know is not working it had a gray screen with spinning wheel  I have snow  leopard on my iMac I bought mountin lion know the screen I grey I can't do nothing I reboots don't work I inserted the cd for my I Mac don't work can't do nothing I can't remove the cd can someone help me .

To get the CD to eject, hold down the mouse, or if you use it, trackpad, button while you reboot ... keep holding the button down until it ejects. If that doesn't work, this Apple note has some other steps.
See this Apple note on steps to take to deal with the grey screen.
Your iMac needs to be mid-2007 or newer with 2GB minimum memory (4GB+ is recommended) and 8GB or more of available disk space. You also should be at OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to access the App store and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • [HELP] Ipod Nano Buttons Don't Work [HELP]

Okay, I had got my Ipod on December 25, 2006, but now I recently came by a problem.
I charge my Ipod, and then take it out the right way. When I try to listen to my songs, the buttons don't work, the only button that works is the HOLD SWITCH. This is getting on my nerves. Do anybody know how to fix this problem? I might have to get another one or send in for repairing. Thanks.

    First try a reset...
Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
Obviously if your buttons are truly broken the above won't work, but worth checking anyway.
Next, try restoring the iPod and see if that clears it up.
If not, then you may have an actual hardware failure.

  • Apple iAds don't work in the UK?

    Hi,
I have recently been downloading a few iPhone apps with iAds integrated in them. But none of the iAds actually work on my iPhone. I know this isn't a problem with my iPhone because many of my friends are having the exact same problem. So does anyone know why iAds don't work in the UK?
    Thanks

I can't imagine why they wouldn't work in the UK but consider yourself lucky. Did you really download an app so you could enjoy the Advertising? I can't stand advertising, here in the USA it is crammed down our throats at every turn and on every square inch of extra space of every surface we have. Heck, our televisions now have ads that play over half the screen WHILE our program is playing! Why in the heck would anyone want MORE advertising? I've never bought anything spammed to me like that.
And why would anyone care if it's "interactive" advertising? There still trying to sell you something you don't need and probably don't want anyway, all while wasting your time.

  • My Apple chargers don't work with my Iphone, but some off brand cords work. Why?

Perhaps they are broken. Take them into an Apple store and have them examined.

  • When it says that your apple ID don't work for a download what do you do to fix it?

When your Ipod says that your Apple ID is expired what does that mean?

I never heard of that, an expired ID.  I have herd of disabled.  This may help:
Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID

  • Most apple apps don't work

Most of the apps that came with my Mac dont work. Mail, System Preferences, Firefox and Google Chrome all bounce for a bit in the Dock then dissapear again. System Preferences sometimes appears, but as soon as I click on something it dissapears again. Sometimes is appears twice in the Dock.
    Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. my mac is an old DET model, and i got in  by cheating. (apple-s on startup, mount -uw /, rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone, shutdown -h now.)
Could that have much to do with it?
P.P.S This is a multi-account system and none of these problems are experiences in other accounts made the same way. there are 2 admins and the account with probs are one of them.

Cant help noticing that the tutorial in the first link page requires the root user, which can only be enabled through System Peferences, which we are trying to fix, which requires following the tutorial, which requres the root user....
    See the problem?
And your first question, the only thing i can think of that has changed is that the account was made completely hidden. this was done like this:
In a account with System Preferences working, the account's UniqueID was changed to 495 (used to be 502),
in Terminal this was entered: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow Hide500Users -bool TRUE
and the home folder was made hidden like this:
    setfile -a V /Users/AccountName
    Thats about it.

  • Leopard Upgrade Issue (Fixes Don't Work)

    Hello all,
I have a 1Ghz Powerbook G4, and have never had OS upgrade problems before. I finally decided to upgrade to Leopard and am sharing in the Blue Screen o' Death fun that so many have experienced.
I have read through the many posts on this. I have done the APE removal stuff, repaired permissions and hard drive, and rebooted while standing on my head -- but I always come back to the BSoD.
There isn't enough room on my HD to do an Archive & Install, because I was going to dump a bunch of old files on DVD-R after I upgraded. I DID do a complete clone of my HD before I upgraded, so most everything is there but:
    1) I did some logo/vector work this morning and was stupid to not at least ZIP it all up and email it to myself. I would really like to get this folder back out of my documents if at all possible.
    2) Although I have a clone I have never had problems, so I have no idea how to use it. Do I restart holding down C, and use the DVD menu to restore the hard drive?
    - If I do that will it be just like it was when I last backed it up?
    - If I go this route, can someone tell me if I can possibly get that folder out of my documents first?
    - Is there a better way for me to approach this?
Thank you all in advance for your help!
    Jason

Is there a better way? Yes, but unfortunately you didn't do it the first time around which is why you are now having problems. So here's what you need to do:
    1. Boot from your Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from theUtilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives.
    4. Select the startup volume (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will may take several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Finish the OS X installation.
    8. After the computer restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant. Be sure to create the new admin account using the save shortname and password as you are using now. The shortname is the name that appears under your Home folder.
    9. You can then use Software Update to update the system software. After you complete the updating process I suggest opening Disk Utility and repairing permissions.
Once you have Leopard running you can begin the process of reinstalling your third-party applications and copying your personal files from your backup clone.
I strongly recommend that before reinstalling any third-party software that you obtain versions that are compatible with Leopard. I also suggest that you repair permissions after installing any third-party software that uses an installer (as opposed to drag and drop installing.)
From time to time perform some maintenance to keep the computer running properly:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • When will Apple fix ITunes to work with Windows 7 (64)?

After many attempts, iTunes (10.5.1) can not synchronized with iPod . If I import musics or create a personal folder, all info will disappear after I close and re-open later iTunes. However works perfectly under Windows XP.  It looks like an incompatibility problem between these two... When will Apple stop denying this and fix the problem?  Two other friends have Windows 7 and they experience the same problem! All programs (iTunes, QuickTime and Bonjour were uninstalled and all folders removed from the computer. Even regestries were cleaned up!....Re-installed twice but iTunes still not function normally as far as synch features.

I don't know about iPod, but I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and other than a current problem accessing the iTunes store, it seems to work OK. I can sync my iPhone fine. Do you have a conflict with another software package you are running, like an anti-virus or firewall? It might not be, but in troubleshooting sync problems with my PC and iPhone previously, I found that I had a conflict with a firewall. The firewall has since been updated and is behaving nicely with iTunes now, but they can sometimes be a problem. Anyways, I hope this helps, but thought I'd mention that my Win7 x64 and iTunes 10.5.1 seems to sync OK in case it helps you to look for other causes to the problem.
