Login manager doesn't restart

Hi,
At the end of my session the login manager (kdm) doesn't restart any more. It starts only when I digit "reboot" or "shutdown -P"
Thanks

Ok and here is the kdm.log entry

Fatal server error is interesting. I don't know what is the problem. I even prepared new xorg.conf again.

  • [SOLVED]X doesn't restart with Control + Alt + Backspace?

I'm using the latest X, KDE 4.2, and NVIDIA 173 drivers (With the Nvidia 6150 LE Graphics Card) all from extra, and I'm logging in using inittab to cut straight into KDM. The only thing that doesn't work as expected is when I press the command keys to restart X, it dies and reverts to tty1 (where I can login, but it's fairly annoying that this happens). Does anybody have any ideas what may be causing this? Is there a configuration I'm missing somewhere maybe?

From the Wiki (and I agree): The inittab method is recommended for various reasons, one being that it will allow you to boot directly into framebuffer mode from GRUB. This is an advantage should the graphics driver crash in X, for example, you would not be forced to fix your system from a live cd or through other needlessly complex means.
From what I understand, OP, that's perfectly normal behavior (Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc is to kill X, not restart, and now there is no login manager). I'm not sure how best to go about making it re-enter the login manager... if you don't need any of the above, go ahead and make it a daemon. Personally, I just use a customized text login and screw the GUI login manager (there's threads on this)
    Hmm... Thanks for the info.
I just checked my inittab and it respawns xdm-- I guess that was default since I havent changed it. I don't use any graphical login manager. A simple xinit is good for me. So in that case, what will it respawn? I don't think I have xdm installed either

  • Archiso login-manager autologin

    Hi!
I'm playing with archiso to create a custom .iso and i'm not able to autologin user in lightdm ,
i've to enter username and password to enter the gnome session.
I've added autologin entries in lightdm.conf,
added the user to the autologin group
and created .dmrc in /etc/skel with gnome session entry.
Once installed the iso to the hd the autologin works as expected but it doesn't work in live.
    any hint?

If you want to start X without the login manager, then I wouldn't enable it...
Just leave it installed is enough.

  • Login Manager and running .xinitrc commands

    Evenin' geezers,
Just a quick one - I'm gonna do a bit more digging around, probably find something, but:
If I want to run, say, Enlightenment, I can stick it in .xinitrc. Then, if I want to run adesklets with it, I can stick that in .xinitrc as well. But, if I want to run some other environments as well, and I use a login manager, how can I get adesklets to load? It doesn't run the .xinitrc script anymore.
    So,
    a) is there a place to put login scripts that start adesklets regardless off what environment I use?
    b) if not, is there somewhere to make the login manager call adesklets somehow?
I'm sure it can't be too complicated, but I can't get it quite right.
    Cheers,
    Thom

    From KDE FAQ:
How do I run a program at KDE startup?
There are many ways to do that. If what you want to do is to run some scripts that would set some environment variables (for example, to start gpg-agent, ssh-agent and others), you can put these scripts into $KDEHOME/env/ and make sure their names end in .sh. $KDEHOME is usually a folder named .kde (note the period at the beginning) in your home folder. If you want scripts to be executed for all KDE users, you can put them under $KDEDIR/env/, where $KDEDIR is the prefix KDE was installed to (you can find this out using the command kde-config --prefix).
If you wish to start a program after KDE has started, you may want to use the Autostart folder. To add entries to the Autostart folder:
    1. Open Konqueror.
    2. Select Go->Autostart from the menubar.
    3. Right-click in the window view area and select Create New->File->Link to Application
    4. Click on the Application tab in the window that appears and enter the name of the command to run in the Command text box.

  • [SOLVED] Shutdown not possible without login manager

When I login using slim as user, everything is fine.
Automatic login without slim changes the rights of my user.
When dbus is active as a daemon in rc.conf, wicd works fine (without dbus wicd would not work), but only xfce4 log-out is avaiblable. Xfce4-Shutdown and -restart is inactive.

it works now with the help of a debian thread, unfortunately in German
    http://debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=131087
three additional files in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local have to set up (exactly the way they are in the thread):
    etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.consolekit.pkla
    etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla
    etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.upower.pkla
For Archlinux the group powerdev has to be replaced by power and users by storage
in sudoers /usr/lib/xfce4/session/xfsm-shutdown-helper has to be removed.
After a restart all should work (mount and restart works on my installation now).

In order to restart the runtime processes manually, issue these commands from the ACS CLI
    - acs stop runtime
    - acs start runtime

I disabled intel GPU in BIOS and X wasn't able to start. Here is log: http://pastebin.com/jJqksmyS. I think there may be something wrong with my nvidia card. Before arch I used bbswitch to turn it off during startup so I don't even know if it was working earlier or not.
I'm going to try bbswitch and see what happens.
    [Edit]
So I tried two ways to turn off dedicated card: acpi_call as it is described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/hy … screte_GPU and bumblebee with bbswitch https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee. There was some problems with acpi_call but bumblebee seems to work well and my nvidia GPU is turned of by bbswitch module during startup, but display manager still  doesn't show up. Now I'm absolutely clueless.

  • NAC manager doesn't change auth vlan to access vlan

    Hi,
I am trying to install L2 out-of band NAC in my LAN but I have problem for which I don't seem to find any solutions.
The problem is that NAC manager simply doesn't change switchport from authentication to access vlan although user
is authenticated and all CAA requirements have been met.
I connect my laptop to switch and NAM changes vlan to auth. vlan and laptop gets IP address from access vlan (vlan mapping
configured on NAM). Then CCA login pops out and I enter username and password. After that CAA says: "Successfully logged in
to network" but laptop stays in auth. vlan and I can see my user in "out of band" users list (on NAM) but laptop (his MAC address) is not
in the certified devices list. And Manager keeps it in auth. vlan. So when I click OK in CAA, the login window pops out again because I'm still
    in authentication vlan.
What could be the problem? I really tried everything and I don't know why manager doesn't put laptop to certified devices list (I repeat, user is in out
of band users list) and CCA says successfully logged in to network, and all requirements are met too.

    Faisal,
thank you very much, yes that was the problem. I didn't have managed subnet entry. Now it works fine, but I have another problem. When I added managed
subnet I cannot connect to NAC server from my PC which has IP address from that subnet range. I cannot ping neither connect via https, totally
    inaccessible.
What can I do to have that managed subnet entry, and still to be able to connect to server from that subnet (VLAN)?
I tried adding managed subnet entry with auth. vlan (400) and then with access vlan (110) and no-vlan (-1) but the situation is same - clean access
works fine, but I cannot reach server from my PC.

  • Am told firefox is already running , but task manager doesn't show it

am told firefox is already running , but task manager doesn't show it. I installed Firefox 3.6.10 on a new computer (win 7 home premium), deleted the profile given and copied my old profile in its place (win vista premium). I get the above message and am told to close the existing process, or restart the system. Can't close and restarting doesn't help. Please solve this for me, i so don't want to use Internet Explorer

g'day people... a dude called "moopenguin32" showed me the way... alleluia
    1. Copy your Firefox shortcut (what you click on to open Firefox) to the Desktop.
    2. Right-click on it and click on Properties.
    3. Go to the end of the text in the "Target" field. The end will say: firefox.exe"
    4. Enter a space followed by: -profilemanager
    5. The end result will look something like this: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
    6. Click OK to save the settings.
    7. Double-click on the shortcut you just changed.
    8. Delete the profile listed. It shouldn't matter that you're deleting it because you're trying to restore a profile anyways. You should have the profile you're trying to restore saved elsewhere.
    9. Close the profile manager.
    10. Start Firefox using your regular shortcut. Firefox should open properly. Close Firefox.
    11. Now to restore your profile, open the profile folder you have backed up and copy the contents of it rather than the actual folder.
    12. Go to your existing Firefox profile and open it.
    13. Delete the contents of the existing Firefox profile.
    14. Paste the contents of the Firefox profile that you're trying to restore (the one you copied in step 11).
    15. Open Firefox and everything should be there (including your extensions).

  • KDE: User list in login manager

Is there a way to get a user list on KDE's login manager so the user can choose his profile and then enter the password? - kind of windowish way...
Must be a theme or anything appart?
    Thanks!

Default KDM theme doesn't support users list (yeah I know, this is ridiculous*). In fact none of KDM themes supplied with KDM supports users list.
    For my sister's PC I was using this one: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Ku … ent=140882
It looks pretty the same as default one, just swap logo icon and background to your needs and your good to go**.
    * There are bug reports about that (one of them made by me) but noone seems to give a rats ass about it - apparently login management in multi-user OS is not as important as fricking plasmoids
** This background inconsistency during logging into KDE is another small thing that's pisses me off

  • V6.01, Windows 7, click on icon, "firefox is already running but not responding" Task manager doesn't know about it. I can't quit it or get it to load. Brand new install. What to do?

Brand new Lenovo computer, Windows 7 Home. New install of Firefox 6.0.1, set as default browser, don't launch when I click done. Icon appears in tray. I click the icon, and a message says "firefox is running but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing process, or reboot". It's not obviously running. I can't find a way to make it quit. Task manager doesn't list it as a current application. Uninstall using the control panel uninstall function and then reinstalling gives the same message. Rebooting doesn't fix the problem and gives the same message. Firefox had been working until I tried to update my bookmarks.

No can do. I can delete the current profile and install Firefox, which should create a new blank profile. The message still says "Firefox is already running." I can place my old profile in the proper folder, and Firefox will still be already running. I can't actually use Firefox, because even though the message says it is running, there is nothing on the screen I can access.
After uninstalling Firefox, deleting the two items left in the Programs folder, and deleting the profile again, it still didn't work. I then got frisky and from the Roaming folder I deleted the Mozilla folder which contains the Firefox folder which contains the now empty Profiles folder. That worked, and a new set of folders with a new blank profile were created. So apparently it was the empty folders that never got deleted that were causing the issue.
Thanks for your suggestion. It got me thinking.
