Login names using first . last format

Hello,
We are considering using the <firstname>.<lastname> format for UNIX accounts. This has two potential problems: The login name may be very long (over twenty characters) and the dot in the middle may cause problems for some applications.
I know that 'admintool' does not accept that format but 'admintool' has always been broken anyway. Does anyone know of other problems we may encounter using the <firstname>.<lastname> format under Solaris 8.

Is your network that large that you wish to do this? It is usually better to stick with a standard(i.e. the first initial, last name +numeral to differentiate samenames). They become standard practices for a reason.

  • Can I use the Registry to change the Login Name used in Note Tool?

    If adding notes in browser-based review, you cannot edit the Author name used in the note tool. Its uses the fixed Windows login name shown in Edit > Preferences > Identity.
    If you turn off the "Always use Log-in name for Author name" setting, the Author can be changed when adding notes in Acrobat itself, but the Author is fixed to the Windows login name in browser-based review.
    Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knows if this can be changed in the Registry? I've found the login field name here (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\9.0\Annots\cAnnots\cAnnot\tauthor) but it unfortunately does not update the Author field.

    Good afternoon!
    You can replicate this in Acrobat 8 as follows:
    - In Acrobat / Edit Preferences / Commenting, turn off "Always use Log-in Name for Author Name"
    - Open a PDF in Acrobat > Add a Note > Right-click Properties > General tab > Rename the Author to "TESTING" > Click "Make Properties Default" > Click OK
    - Set up a Network Folder Online Comments Repository as follows: In Acrobat / Edit Preferences / Reviewing, set Server Type to "Network Folder" and browse for a folder to save comments to.
    - Open Registry and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\8.0\Annots\cAnnots\cAnnot\tauthor
    - tauthor should be showing "TESTING" that we entered earlier
    - Open a browser window and drag a PDF into it
    - Add a Note, the Author name is fixed to be the Windows Login name.

  • Request.getRemoteUser()  to find out login name using NtlmFilter

    can we implement request.getRemoteUser() without using NtlmHttpFilter.
    Actually, i do not want to uise the filter because i am already using a filter.
    So can we make any declaration of the Ntlm class and use it such that we can easily access the login name without using the Ntlm Filter in the DD(web.xml)?
    A timely response will be highly appreciated.

  • SLS changing short/login name

    I've seen this in other threads (at least on Apple's discussion board) and thought I had a temp fix, but it hit again today. When you add aliases to a user in Workgroup Manager, it can/has change the primary shortname for one of the aliases, thereby changing the short login name used for network logins, email login etc. It happened again today. I wasn't able to check my email because it wouldn't authenticate, I looked at WGM, and sure enough the primary (first in the list greyed out can't edit) shortname had been changed to one of the aliases I had added for email purposes, and my original shortname had been demoted to an alias.
    Does anyone else know id Apple is aware of this? Does anyone had an actual fix?

    This may or may not be germane to your issue, but I had all kinds of trouble when I initially set up OS X server, migrating from - among other things - a separate mailserver. This related to using periods in usernames and also from creating second usernames (with periods) in WGM. There seems to be an issue with anything other than letters and numbers in usernames.
    For around 20 years, our email addresses had been in the form firstname.lastname@domain, so my first run at setting up snow leopard server used these existing usernames. I am no longer certain of the details, but depending on the method used (server preferences or workgroup manager, as I recall), the system would either accept or reject usernames containing periods. Since I was concerned that using our legacy firstname.lastname usernames might be a problem, I checked with apple enterprise support, and the person I spoke to could not identify a reason why the periods might cause a problem, so I went ahead.
    I cannot recall the specific initial problems, but there were several and I ended up purging my firstname.lastname users and going with usernames that had no periods or other offending characters. This time, in order to continue receiving mail at our legacy addresses, each user had a second "firstname.lastname" username entered in WGM. Among the problems I recall arising at this juncture was WGM becoming semi-disabled (I was unable to add users, for instance) and, in some cases, and for no apparent reason, the firstname.lastname usernames swapped places with the "legal" usernames in WGM.
    I ended up purging the users and groups again, using only the "legal" usernames and no second username in WGM, and manually editing the etc/postfix/aliases file, to deal with our legacy firstname.lastname usernames. Everything has been well behaved for several weeks now, and adding a couple of second names that had no (apparently) illegal characters has not caused any problem.

    Go to Custom reports
    Select New Report (Type = Workstation; Focus = Basic workstation attributes)
    In column selection place "Login Name"
    In summary criteria select "Workstation Instances (Summary) > 1
    Save with a name like "Duplicate Logins

    Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
    Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
    If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Auto generate login name basis on user first initial and last name... LC designer

    First initial + last name= login name...
    Text field   + text field  = text field....
    can I use javascript to generate the loginname form first name (first Int) and last name???
    For ex... First name: John
                 middle int: k
                 last Name: Doe
                LoginName: jdoe
    var LoginName = getField("LastName").value;
             var FirstName = getField("FirstName").value;
             if (FirstName!="")
             LoginName += " " + FirstName.substring(0,1) + "."
             event.value = LoginName;
    not sure if this is right... please help

    You guys are both using Acrobat JS notation so you're not going to have much luck.
    In LC there's no getField or event.value and values are returned from fields using fieldName.rawValue (or .formattedValue).
    I put this on the Calculate event of the LoginName field:
    var vFirstName = FirstName.rawValue;
    var vLastName = LastName.rawValue;
    if (!(FirstName.isNull || LastName.isNull)) { // if both fields have data
    this.rawValue = vFirstName.substring(0,1) + vLastName;

    Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
    When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
    I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
    However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
    So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
    Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

    One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

  • Change the order of last name and first name

    I use my iPhone in English, however I have a few Japanese contacts and I add their names with kanji (Japanese characters). In Japanese, the last name comes before the first name, and in English, obviously, the first name comes first. I have my settings with the last name first because it makes a little more sense in both languages, but I want to change the order depending on the languages without putting the last name in the first name and vice versa. Is this possible?

    Not really, the name order is global so you cannot just switch it on and off.  Best way is to just reverse the entry order as you have been doing.

  • Remove First & Last Name Validation in Get Support

    Hi All,
       I have enabled the self management of password for portal users. I have to remove the First & Last Name validation  and make it optional, I have also made (ume.logon.logon_help.name_required = false)  in configtool and taken the restart of the server, but still it is validating the names.
    If anyone have removed the validation for the above, can help me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Ponnusamy

    Hi Ponnuswamy,
    the right place to remove the validation is the par file of the login page.
    Get the par file from the portal. unzip the par file.
    under the PORTAL-INF\lib u will find the umelogonbase.jar
    Extrat the jar. get the java file named
    SAPMLogonLogic.java.
    Modify the piece of code in the java file.
    private void performForgotPassword()
            throws IOException, UMException, FeatureNotAvailableException {
            String methodname = "performForgotPassword";
            if (trace.bePath()) {
                trace.entering(methodname);
            try {
                String longUid = this.proxy.getRequestParameter(LogonBean.LONGUID);
                if (longUid != null) {
                    longUid = longUid.trim();
                // check for email id
                String email = this.proxy.getRequestParameter("email");
                String lastName = this.proxy.getRequestParameter("lastname");
                String firstName = this.proxy.getRequestParameter("firstname");
                String noteToAdmin = this.proxy.getRequestParameter("notetoadmin");
                IUser userFrom = UMFactory.getUserFactory().getUserByLogonID(longUid);
                if (email.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getEmail()) &&
                        firstName.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getFirstName()) &&
                        lastName.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getLastName())) {
                    // email matched, assign a new password and email to user
                    String newPass = UMFactory.getSecurityPolicy().generatePassword();
                    IUserAccount ua = UMFactory.getUserAccountFactory()
                                                       .getMutableUserAccount(longUid);
                    ua.setPassword(newPass);
                    ua.save();
                    ua.commit();
    this is the original coding.
    remove the check for last name and first name in that
      if (email.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getEmail()) &&
                        firstName.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getFirstName()) &&
                        lastName.equalsIgnoreCase(userFrom.getLastName()))
    complie the java file. get the class and store it in the umelogonbase.jar . put the jar back in the original place. deploy the par.
    u will get the desire result.
    cheers,
    Sithi

  • Outlook task & Contacts first, last name swap

    Hi,
    Sorry if this has been raised before.
    I'm using Windows XP SP2 / Outlook 2003 / Nokia 6275 / Bluetooth. Synching Outlook and phone works successfully except for two small issues:
    * Completed Tasks in Outlook do not delete from phone even though Settings > Calendar options states "PC Sync removes recently completed To-do items from mobile phone".
    * My Outlook contacts are all stored "last name, first name" and sync correctly to phone. However once every month or so some Outlook records (not all) get corrupted and name field is changed to "first name last name"
    Any ideas?

    I am not sure what you mean. If you mean Last name/first name to First name/Last name Go into contacts>options>Settings>Name display and set according to your needs. There are three options there.
