Login on one machine at a time

Hey,
We are in the middle of setting up a HomeSync solution in our office. My question is, is it possible to ensure that a user is only logged in to one computer at a time.
If a user is already logged in, can it prevent it from logging into another machine?

Workgroup Manager has an option to restrict user(s) to a single login. While Workgroup Manager is not available for Yosemite and Server 4.0 you can still run it on a Mavericks machine to manage a Yosemite server.
Be careful though as there has been a bug around which may still affect Yosemite where AFP sessions are not properly terminated when a user logs out, this might prevent a legitimate new login by a user.

  • Internet only works on one machine at a time

I have three linux machines on my local network - my server running mandrake, one running gentoo and the other running a new install of Arch
Trouble is, that whenever the arch box acceses the internet, the gentoo box has real trouble with doing so - all the name lookups fail...
As soon as I stop network activity on the arch box - the gentoo box is fine again
I realise this could be an issue with my ISP - but it does seem odd that the network is only struggling when more than one machine is trying to get online...
My server is the only box with direct access to the net
Any ideas what could be wrong here?
Edit: another reason to suspect it's a linux thing is that the windows laptop also on the same network has none of the same problems...

I would suspect wrong network configuration (ip conflict? nat?) But without any details it's almost impossible to help you.
First of all you have to tell us if you connect your gentoo and arch boxes through your mandrake server with nat or maybe all 3 boxes are connected to some external router/switch/whatever? Please post your net configs (at least from rc.conf). If all 3 boxes are connected directly to your provider this may also mean that there are some limits - in this case I would suggest connecting desktop machines through your server with nat or buying some small hardware router. That's as much as I can tell for now until you provide some configs.
EDIT: one more thing: if you say that your win notebook works just try to copy it's config options to arch - it should be easy. Check ip, dns servers, if it uses dhcp - basic things form network connection properties - tcpip protocol.

  • Login of one user at a time

When having different network admin, what will be the configuration/settings on the ACS to set one at a time login onto the cisco device?
So that when a user already logged into the device, other users attempting to login will be blocked.

    Hi,
You can Setting Max Sessions for a User Group for the maximum number of simultaneous connections for the entire group of users for all devices.

  • I want to know how to install and download an app on more than one machine at a time

download and install an app on more than two computers at a time

No. You have 2 activations and that is that. If you need it on more machines, you need another subscription.

  • How to de-authorize 1 machine at a time

I know how to de-authorize all 5 machines, but is it possible to only de-authorize one machine at a time?

    David,
Sure, but you need to be on the computer you wish to deauthorize.
    Then just choose Advanced>Deauthorize Computer.

  • Multiple remote home directory users logged into one machine?

    Hello,
Just wondering if it's possible to have two or more users logged into the same machine at the same time. Each user has a home directory located on an XServe RAID connected to an XServe.
We have a new employee who is needing to toggle back and forth between his account and an account that belongs to a previous employee.
So far I've only had success logging in one remote home directory user, and a user account local to the machine. Making.. two users logged in on the same machine at the same time.
Anyone able to offer some insight? thanks!

The way afp works, you won't be able to log in more than one user with a remote home directory on any one machine at a time. This is a known limitation.
If you need access to more than one account at a time, you could copy the home directory of the old user onto the local machine and set up a local account with it. Or you could give the new user a copy of the old home directory if it's just a matter of file access.
    Hope this helps,
    Andrew

  • Can I back up more than one mac to the time machine:

Can I back up more than one Mac to a time machine? I have a laptop and a Mac Desktop computer can I back up both on the same Time machine

    Absolutely.
However, quoting from ASC contributor Pondini's excellent Time Machine FAQ:
It is advisable, though, to partition an external disk that will be connected to your Macs into one volume for each Mac ...

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • One thing at a time (Machine)

Recently my iMac died, after a fatal fall. But the glorious folks at the Covent Garden Apple Store brought my iMac back to life with a shiny new Hard Drive.
I wasn't all that bothered by its death, as i knew i could get it resurrected and that all my data was backed up on to my external drive Time Machine. But now that its back i'm finding it increasingly annoying that i'm having to restore one file at a time.
I didn't want to restore everything, i just wanted some of it.
If i click a folder in Time Machine, i get the folder, with no contents, i then have to go back it to Time Machine and restore each file one at a time. And i'm constantly being told that i "Don't have permission to access this file" even if its a Text Edit file.
I might not need to restore everything, but i do need to restore a lot of files, at this rate i'll be at it for days.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i didn't want a full restore. I just wanted a few files, and maybe some more down the road.
The problem with that is, the user account you set up after reinstalling OSX isn't recognized as the same one as on your backups.   On a Mac, one user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to another user's data.  That's why you can't restore things successfully.
Your best bet, by far, is to do a full restore.  Make sure everything is just as it was, and working properly. Then you can start deleting what you don't want.

  • Found iCal events in Time Machine.  Now Lion only allowing me to import one event at a time.

Upgrade my macbook pro over the weekend to Snow Leopard and then Lion.   I lost all my the majority of my iCal events.   Went to Apple store and they said that was rare and not sure how to restore my last back up from Time Machine on an external drive.   I've been spending hours trying to go through a bunch of threads on different MAC formums.
So I finally found my iCal events in Time Machine.   When I try to import these events, I am only allowed to highlight/import one event at a time.   This will take me forever to import years of missing data.   I basically have been using my iCal to journal for my 3 small daughters - first tooth, hair cut, etc.   So I am desperate to get these events back so I can get them printed and SAFE.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to import my ics files?   The Apple Store Genius had me tryng to import the corestorage.ics files.   2 or 3 of those files showed they were trying to be imported for over 4 hours.   I finally Forced Quit iCal.   I've tried this several times and same result.
The corestorage files were under user/library/application support/ical/sources
I now located the calendar events user/library/calendars/ then a bunch of coded files leading to the events.  These events appear to be the ones I am looking for as I can read some of the files.   I have several years I want to import back into my working iCal.
Please help if you know how!!!
    Thank you,
Very Upset Mama of 3 little girls

Thomas - You are awesome - THANK YOU!
I did exactly what you said (CAN"T believe an Apple Genius did not know this) and I think all of my events got restored.
However, it duplicated all of the calendars - I have 6 (one for each family member plus an extra called home that we all have to do).   Not sure if I did something wrong, but do you have any ideas?
Also, the time setting must be wrong b/c I have events from 2008 showing up in 2012 - same day and time as the old sessoin - just out dated.    Do I need to manually change all of this?   Should I delete the Calendars folder again and try again?
Also, I read some where about deleting a iCal cache file.   Do I need to do this?
I TRULY appreciate you taking the time to help people in this forum.   I have spent hours the past two days trying to figure this out.   Plus, now I need to figure out about upgrading my Office for Mac b/c I didn't realize I lost Office 2004 when upgrading to Lion.
Thank you for your time and support!

  • Time Machine Disk on One Machine Backing up a Second

    Hello All,
I have an iMac with an external hard drive I use for time machine.  I am going to get a MacBook Air and want to use the same hard drive for Time Machine.  I know you can store 2 different computer time machine backups onto the same drive, however I do not have an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule.  My question then is, is there any way to have the MacBook Air backup to the time machine disk plugged in locally to the iMac via the Network or would I need to get a Airport Extreme or Time Capsule?  I'd prefer not having to disconnect/reconnect the time machine disk every time I want it to back up each machine (kinda defeats the point of it doing things automatically).  Is this possible?  Thanks for letting me know!

    Yup.
See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  I'd strongly recommend that you partition the drive, as noted there.
The backups made over a network will be stored differently than the ones done locally; in a disk image sparse bundle.

If you are looking for high quality drives and enclosures I'd recommend these 3:

I use the LaCie's, I've got three connected to my system and a 4th acting as my TM drive on my MacBook Air. Any of the above would be welcome on my desk though.
