Login Options - Display login window as: preference unavailable

Hi:
I apologise if this topic has been posted before, but I've been searching the web and these forums for awhile now and nothing similar has come up:
Running 10.5.8, I set the preference for "Display login window as:" to list of users. Everything was working as I expected, until I hooked my computer up to my school's OS X network and now all I get is the regular login/password screen. When I go back to the Login Options prefpane, "Display login window as:" is now greyed out and I can't change anything.
Any ideas about what happened?
Thanks

Have you tried returning to the school and connecting to the network since your settings changed? I would log into that network again and see if the box is accessible when you are logged in. (If it works, clamp the padlock on that setting.) If that doesn't help, in your shoes my next step would be finding the network administrator for the school and see if they might have a suggestion.
Caveat: I am new to Leopard and have not been in your situation. But so far nobody has given you any suggestions, and mine won't make things worse.
Good luck, and please post back with an update.

  • Login Options dimmed

I was able to create a new password and admin ID on an recently acquired old G4 laptop. However, every time I log in it asks for my password. I want it to log in automatically. However, the 'login options' are dimmed in system preferences. There are no other accounts set up, only my admin account. How can I get the computer to log me in w/o having to enter my password each time?

  • What is Display in Window of RRI in Web Template

    Hi All,
I have searched in SDN and read lot of documents and SAP Help to know, how to use one option in RRI, but ended up with no success. which is the reason I am posting my query here, pls throw your lights ;-).
There are 4 options available in web template settings to set up jump reports. I would like to know how can I use option 'Display in Window'.
    Remaining options are
    1. Frame Name - This displays the jump report in the specified frame, for this we can use HTML code.
    2. No Entry (Blank) - This is the default setting, which always opens the jump report in New Window.
3._self - Using this value, the jump report will open in the same window, by overwriting the existing report.
I will be very thankful, if someone can tell, how to use 'Display in Window' option? I mean what HTML command I need to use or is there any predefined word which I can use.
    Your answers are much appreciated.
    Regards
    Charan.

In fact having checked out a number of videos on Lynda.com, Illustrator is what I want. It was never about html - that already forms part of what I am already doing. As to mailchimp - I know all about that and don't like it and don't need it  - the method I currently use from Dreamweaver to email works great.
The question was always about graphics and text for the web and a desire to have the same layout and quality as InDesign - I probably just didn't ask the right question.
    Thanks as always.

  • Cannot display login window as "List of users"

I am running Leopard Server, and I cannot seem to get my OS to display login window as "List of users".
The option is grayed out in System Preference, and if I use Workgroup Manager to set the Login preference for this computer to "List of users able to use these computers", my computer doesn't seem to respect that. Although it does respect the "Show Restart/Shut Down button" when I turn that on/off.
I tried to edit the com.apple.loginwindow.plist in /Library/Preference, no option found for display login window.
    Help please, thanks.

The way to switch between the two options is:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 1
    (turn on name list)
    and
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 0
    (turn off name list)
    and use
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME
to see what the current setting is. Note that when you use the defaults command, you omit the ",plist" on the preference file name.
As always, beware of trying to bypass measures put in place to protect you, and be careful modifying preference files since you can lock yourself out or prevent your computer from booting properly.

  • Display login window as: List of Users

Just got a Mac Mini Server.
I would like to have the login window be a list of users but it is grayed out.
(This is after I unlocked the accounts)
Everything else I can manage except for the these radio buttons.

  • Made a bad change to login options under user preferences, changed from "List of users" to "Name and password". I shut the computer down, now I can't login in when I turn the computer back on.  What can I do to fix this problem?

Have Migrated data from IMAC to Macbook twice.  Because I had too many admin ids under user and accounts preferences, I was trying not to delete the extras but that they wouldn't all show at login time.  Under Login Options, I clicked out  "List of Users" and clicked in "Name and password".  Can't remember whether I did anything else.  I shut down the computer and turned it back on to test the change.  I get a dark grey screen with all my admin ids in circled pictures plus one for guest, but doesn't let me do anything with any of the admin ids.  I clicked on any one and nothing happens.  IF i click on the guest circle, it gives me a message that the computer will restart with only Safari allowed.
Since I haven't been able to connect my macbook to my IMac so I can login to the macbook through the Imac, I can't get to my macbook.  There must be a way to fix this problem.  I expected to see places to enter name and password but nothing is allowed to enter.  Please help!

First thing I would do would be to boot in to Lion Recovery (Command+R on boot) and run Disk Utility, both disk and permissions repair.

  • Cant see the option to login as microsoft account on system after windows 8 was refreshed with 8.1

My system came with Windows8 installation. And I created my windows account on this.
Later it prompted for 8.1 update and I went with that.
After 8.1 got installed, I also created my local account.
I logged in as local account (also admin account) and then logged out. first issue came as system errored out once I tried to login as microsoft account now. I dont know why.. It was not wrong password error. It just said error logging into microsoft account
Now I do not see an option to login as microsoft account. PLease note, I do not even see this listed in user accounts.
There are other issues too, like for every folder, I need to specifically provide admin access even if I am logged in as local administrator account. But I am fine with these issues.Obviously, they irritate :).
But I would like to resolve the microsoft account issue first.. HOw do I get it back ..

    Hi,
Please check your Microsoft Account status in User Account Manager:Control Panel\User Accounts\User Accounts
In addition, please access to the path of registry to check your Microsoft Account if it locate there.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
If problem persists, the workaround method may be need you delete and readd your Microsoft Account on your computer.

  • "Login Options" in "System Preferences"- Accounts gone.

    Hello,
on some of our machines the "Login Options" can not be clicked any more.
    These machines are special:
    - They came preinstalled (and or are freshly installed) with Leopard
    - They are mostly Laptops without Network-homedirectories
    - They have (some) a second administrative user for the people who "own" the machine
All other machines that we have are:
    - upgraded from Tiger to Leopard
    - have networked-home directories (via NFS/Autofs from Linux NFS Server)
    - one Administrative User
    - users come from LDAP (IBM-Tivoli, nothing with OSX-Server)
We use the puppet configuration management tool to set up our machines. I have looked through all of the options that we set, but could not find any that could possibly cause this error.
    We have already:
    - deleted all preferences
    -- from the user (administrative)
    -- from the system
    -> Nothing changed
The only possible thing that I can think of is:
    - We create users (at most 2) via the command line (with puppet).
    - I know that there is no "useradd" or something similar on OS X to enable easy commandline creation of users.
    - Could something in this process have gone wrong, such that the Accounts-Preferences were messed up?
    I would appreciate any help/hints.
    Thanks,
    udo.

Open a new account to see if the issue appears there.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • Changing login options?

I want to be able to set my Macbook Pro so that it will come up with a login screen when I turn it on, however when I go to "login options' on the Accounts preferences all of the options are greyed out so I can't change anything. Is there a way around this? I am the only user account on the computer and am admin so I would have thought I should be able to do this!
    Thanks

Open the padlock at the bottom of the window.

  • Login Options: Name and Password?

I have login options set to display "Name and Password" but at login I am presented with a list of Users...  I see an icon for each user account.   Am I missing something?
    Regards

I am having the exact same problem...
I tried deleting the com.apple.loginitems.plist and a few other login plists but to no avail. I also tried to boot into safe mode to see if I could rewrite the system cache but since I have FileVault running it never seemed to get there (Gave up after 15 min).
At this pint I am ready to start messing with the plist manually.

  • Pin login option removed after exchange account was added and is still disabled after removing exchange account

    Hi,
I configured my Surface 2 using pin as login option. After that I added my company's exchange account (which has an active sync policy that disables all login types except Windows live password).
But removing my OWA account didn't remove the exchange restrictions. How do I remove them completely?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
This issue seems to be related to the active sync policy, the sync policy will persist even though the account has been removed. To solve this iuuse ,we can reset the security policy.
    To reset the Security Policies:
Control Panel \User and Family Safety \User Accounts \Reset Security Policies

  • "Other" login option disappears/reappears.  Need help preventing this!

I administer a Mac lab with 20 old 10.4.11 Macs.  There are a variety of login options available on startup, most for specific grades in our school.  One catchall login option is "Other".  Once "Other" is selected, students have to enter their network login ID/password.  This specific login process lets the 5th graders access their legacy (OS 9) keyboarding program.  They save their work to their network folders (OS 10.5.8 server).  Normally this works fine, but on several of the IDENTICALLY CONFIGURED Macs, the "Other" initial login option "disappears"/reappears.
This is a significant problem for the keyboarding class, so anyone who can tell me how to fix this problem will be rewarded in Heaven.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Thanks for the reply.  The deal is that I AM the Network Manager.....  and my Mac background is limited.
There are enough similarities between Active Directory (what I'm used to) and Open Directory that I can function in our computing environment without problems (usually).
This situation is just plain odd due to its sporadic nature,  This problem will eventually go away when we replace the 10.4.11 Mac workstations and the really old Classic keyboarding program.  Until then, I will check DNS.  Thanks.
While I'm here, do you have any idea why I can't map a network drive from our Windows 7 PC laptops to our Mac OS 10.5.8 server?  The Mac workstations connect to the server with no problem.  We have one subnet so being on different subnets is not an issue.

  • Losing 'Other...' login option on OD master

I have a mac mini running Lion Server which is an OD master. It is setup to authenticate against it's own OD service. However I can only do this when the machine first boots up. If I go back to the login window after the first login event, either logging out or using the fast user switching menu, the 'Other...' option dispears leaving me with option to login as the local admin & the currently logged in network user (if a network user is logged). I can't find any reason for this behavior & in all honesty I have no idea where to start looking to solve this problem.
A possibly related thing is I'm currently unable to get a ubuntu file server authenticate against the OD server. However, I've not put any effort into fixing this as it's not a serious problem.

I don't believe so.  Perhaps you could create a local user with a home folder that exists on your network share?
It's a stretch, but it might be possible.
In system prefs.  Create a new user.  Ensure that they're an administrator.
Open up Server.app  In the file sharing section, you'll need to give your new user full access to the home directory in question.
    Back in System Prefs.
Right click on your new users' name.
    Choose advanced options.
Under the home folder location field, type the path to your user's new home folder.
    Click okay, and restart.
    Hope it works!

  • Login Options: Where is "Allow network users" stored?

    Hi all
If I enable "Allow network users to login to this computer" in SystemPreferences / Accounts / Login Options - anyone knows where that gets stored?
I searched in the /Local/Default/ directory and in /Library/Preferences, but couldn't find anything. I'd like to write a script to modify access for network users; no problems in adding and deleting users from the list, but I can't turn on and off general access...
    Thanks, Tina

I have set up a Mac OS X Server for Open Directory but I do not seet the additional option to allow network users to log in on a Mac OS X 10.4 client.
This may be one of the reasons I cannot login with networks accounts.
Unfortunately, I also cannot login using network accounts to the server which does have the network users option checked.
I have the Mac OS X Server set up to be a LAN DNS server, which worked fine before I connected the second ethernet interface to the Internet. Now changeip -checkhostname insists that the Web address of the server should be the address of the hostname when it MUST be the LAN IP address to work properly. I can find no one to login to either of these machines as a network users, even though I can find the users through the Address Book, indicating that the Open Directory connection is properly configured and even though I can ping by name through the LAN which indicated DNS is set up properly.

  • We have a login option that "Disappears" from time to time.  Please help me fix this.  Thanks.

We have a login option called "Other" on our lab 10.4.11 Macs.  It links the student logging in to a legacy keyboarding program.  Every so often it "disappears" on one of the Macs.  Eventually it will "Come Back".  How do I prevent this from happening?  Thanks.

thx for your response. are saying websites such as hotmail and yahoo mail detect that they are being accessed via firefox and turn off the JavaScript that makes hot links? really? additionally, i have friends with firefox in which hyperlinks stay active when they are copied and pasted.
was the "Make Link" add-on you posted supposed to fix the problem? i downloaded it, but i don't know where the "context menu" is that is supposed to help me. how to i view this context window now that i have downloaded the add-on?
