Login screen crashing

After starting our solaris 10 machine, the login screen is flashing and eventually the console shows up. I have tried several suggestions from some forum posts and google searchs but none seemed to have fixed the problem.
What steps should I take to fix this problem? The server runs on sparc and has a xvr-500 video card.
It is possible someone in the past may have changed the configuration of xorg, gdm, and other things...so keep that in mind.
EDIT: After a reboot the login screen will flash several times and then freeze completely. I am stumped.

I searched the forums and found out what my problem is.
In this thread, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2024401&#2024401
I checked the logs and it turns out its the Airport thats causing a kernel panic....How can I disable to prevent this from happening?
I copied and pasted this next part, buts its practically identical to my panic.log

  • [SOLVED] GDM / GNOME crashes on login screen after standby

Brand new Arch installation on a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 10. Most of the stuff works out of the box (except touchscreen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1478128).
Using plain vanilla GNOME + GDM things seem ok, but once every few times upon returning from standby the login screen crashes and just freezes on the password screen. Nothing can be done (except for jumping to another vt) and a reboot is required.
If I SSH into the machine during this period, nothing suspicious shows up on journalctl.
    Any ideas what's going on?

Since I'm also getting some random freezes even when not in the login screen, I'm now suspecting a graphics driver problem.
Now testing UXA mode, per the Intel Graphics wiki page, hoping it will solve the freezes.
EDIT: UXA mode seems to have fixed the problem.

  • Mountain Lion Desktop crash? Randomly it returns me to the login screen and I have restart all my apps

So after install of Mountain Lion (never happened before) my desktop crashes and it returns me to the login screen.  After I login I have to restart all my apps.
One morning this happened 5+ times in under an hour.  So my productivity has gone down :-(
I work around this by only running three apps (finder, terminal & firefox), and then it sees to only happen 2-3 times a day...sigh.
The only other odd thing and have no idea if it is related is that firefox was showing some animated image from the olympics and when I had it on one screen it was fine, when I had the window on the other screen, the image was not the right image, it looked like it had reached into the screen buffer of other applications and was displaying that (e.g. where there was a scrolling flame for the right image, there was some scrolling upside down text from my terminal when I had it on the other screen where the flame was supposed to be).
An help on how to debug/solve would be helpful.

You're welcome. If you use Zoom often try the new show controller feature. It's below where you turned zoom off. Once you turn it on you can use it to turn Zoom on and off. Plus you can use zoom as a magnifying glass instead of full screen.

  • Crash Blue Screen User Login Screen: MacBook Pro 13" + 27" Cinema Display

I'm running 10.6.8 (10K549) on a using a 13" MacBookPro5,5 with 8GB plugged into a 27" Apple Cinema Display and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with all the up to date software. Not sure if important, but the apps I primarily use are CS 5.5 Standard Suite, Fusion 3 and Google Chrome. I've long ago removed all the weird utilitites like InsomniaX, TidyUp and OnyX. Only External plugged in is a 1.5TB USB Free Agent Portable Hard Drive. For the last month or so I've been experiencing two problems:(1) The screen periodically goes blue and then after about 2 minutes the login screen comes up asking me to log in with my password. And (2) I've had periodic moments when I try to move the windows and they move but once moved, redraw themselves very slowly, like I'm having an acid trip. I've googled these problems and can't see where the solutions would apply to me. I went into console and retrieved the most recent Panic crash report and pasted it below. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. In fact, just as I'm posting this I'm having the weird screen redraw. I'm also posting it on facebook if you look for "James Weird Macbook Screen Redraw" you should find it in about 20 minutes. Thanks.

  • USB devices cause a crash at Lion login screen

Since I have installed MacOS X Lion I am experiencing regular crashes at the login screen at startup.
These crashes occur virtually always when
+ a USB device that was connected at the previous shutdown is missing at next launch
+ a USB device that was not connected at previous shutdown is connected at next launch
The type of the device does not make a difference.
I have had this with USB sticks, but also with my Wacom graphics tablet and a regular USB hard disk (connected via two USB ports).
This is extremely annoying and I had hoped this would be fixed with the latest Lion upgrade, but it is not.
Anyone out there has an idea for an easy fix?

    Guys -
am I really the only person who sees this?
This is a serious issue and I also see it happening upon connecting certain USB devices (e.g. today a Garmin nüvi 1250) while running Lion. Non of the OS updates since I posted this helped.
I feel like I am running Windows here...

  • Mac mini crashing into the login screen. Anyone else experiencing the same and know of a solution?

I have a Mac mini (mid-2010) with 5GB of RAM and running OS X Lion 10.7.2 and lately I've been noticing it crash and take me directly to the login screen. After I sign back in everything reboots to where I left off. I believe the problem is related to Safari. I normally have many instances of Safari browser windows open and I'm wondering if that might be the issue? Is anyone else experiencing this problem and have they found any remedies?

Note the time it freezes. That upon next successful start open the Console app in the Utilities folder and look for associated log entries at that time and post them here

  • 10.6.5 update killed my computer, crashes at login screen

I've just installed the latest software update, which was applied without any errors or problems. When I restarted, it crashed at the login screen with the spinning wheel. Every single time it's booted this happens, although sometimes I am able to click Login, but it crashes immediately afterwards. There's no disk activity when it crashes on the wheel.
However, in Safe Mode it boots up just fine. I have nothing in Macbook HD/Library/Startup items, and no login items on any account, which shoots down my theory of it being a 3rd party issue.
Any help would be much appreciated. I've had problems with pretty much every software update from Apple...fills me with dread whenever I have to install a new one.
    Thanks in advance.

All my stuff's backed up nice and safe weekly, although it's not a Time Machine backup since I'd like to access it easily from a Windows machine.
Thanks for the reminder about Console! Handy. Launchd showed that the Blackberry daemon was crashing on startup...which is annoying as I thought I'd removed all Blackberry software from this machine over a year ago. Anyway, I unloaded and properly removed BBDaemon and all works fine now. Guess it must have been some incompatibility with the update.
I also found a whole load of other Blackberry Desktop Manager crap still lurking around. This thread shows all the stuff which the installer fails to remove, might be handy for someone having a similar daemon problem:

  • System crashing and sending me to login screen

I'm having a problem that i dont think i have ever seen before. When a program crashes it just logs me out right back to the login screen. Its usually excel that it happens in. I'll get the beach ball then a blue screen then the login screen. Does anyone have any idea how this could happen.

What version of Mac OS X do you have and what kind of Mac?
Is the system rebooting when it crashes or just logging you out? About how long after the crash can you try to login again?
Have you tried to run the Console program (located in /Applications/Utilities) - try looking at the "All Messages" and "Console Messages" to see if there are some "hints" there. There may be a lot of stuff here, some that is of no relevance and some that is. If you can't tell the difference, post some of it that you think has to do with the problem - note that there are usually time stamps on the information, so pick the entries that happened close to the time of the "crash". If you aren't sure, run Excel again and let the "crash" happen and pay close attention to the time it happened then go to Console and see what sorts of messages happen close to this time.
    -Bob
ps - if you go to "My Settings" after you login to Apple Discussions (located on the right side of the screen underneath "Welcome") you can specify what version of the OS and machine type you have and these bits of information get automatically appended to your post.

    HI,
If you can access these files, delete them and see if it helps.
    com.apple.loginitems.plist
    com.apple.loginitems.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag those files from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

Are you running a Windows partition?
Are you using VirtueDesktops? If so, you may want to delete the app and see if that makes a difference.

  • Macbook Pro stuck at the login screen

This morning I dropped my laptop by catching the charging cable the laptop fell on the floor but everything seemed to be normal.
I then decided to back up straight away so I started time machine. I stupidly started doing some user instensive things on my mac whilst this was going on e.g. playing a game which can sometimes crash. When it did crash I left it for half an hour or so to see if it would bring up force quit or switch out of the crashed programme. This didn't happen so, like i've done in the past, I hard reset holding down the power button.
When I turned on the mac everything seemed normal I got to the login screen and it offered to startup the computer as it was before I restarted. This was a bit odd as I normally get this message when i've actually logged in. My Backup drive also asked for a password which was also strange for the same reason. I then attempted to login to the computer I typed my password in. It was accepted and the screen went white and then went back to the login screen.
I repeated this a few times, restarting etc before I tried using disk utility in recovery mode. When verifying the disk no problems were found. Disk permissions found two problems, which unfortunately I can't remember (1 was to do with the library), I then repaired disk permissions. I tried to start again but got the same problem.
I then stared in safe mode. I'm now meant to be in safe mode but i'm not 100% sure as everything seems the same except everythign is very slow.
Midbackup my computer crashed so i'm wondering if there are any problems there (especially as it was the first backup I made on my new external HD). I'm now trying to backup in safemode but i'm not sure if that's the best thing to do (as not everything might not copy over and I could potentially ruin the first backup to my new external HD). Can anyone give me any advice on what to do next, tell me where I can test whether i'm in safe mode or not and let me know if I should be backing up in safemode.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Lion 10.7.3
    UPDATE
After entering successfully what appeared to be safe mode, I restared the computer and tried logging in normally. I got the white screen (as normal) before I reached the login screen, and after entering my password it eventually did log me in. Everything seems normal but I still want to be sure. My computer seems very slow. I only have 1.25GB/4GB free of RAM and I only have two safari tabs open. I'm backing up now but i'm still a bit concerned.

there is no installation cd, i have hit the command r function and attempted to reinstall from the recovery option stored on the computer. I am connected to the internet. It keeps saying downloading extra components and then once completed just goes b ack to main screen with my old log in informaiton as if nothing has happened. I also attempted to try to do a back up from a restore log and nothing on that as well.

  • Total Blue Screen Crash

Just had a really nasty crash, almost like a kernel panic except that there was no panic message.
Had been running without a restart since installing 10.5.6. Woke up the computer from sleep and plugged in my iPhone 3g (running 2.2). It had apparently synched and was simply charging at the time of the crash (but see below).
Several other applications had been running since the day before, including Entourage, Excel, and Word (all 2004, last updated a few months ago; there is a new 11.5.0 update I have not installed). Had checked mail a few minutes before with Entourage and it was hidden. Word was visible on my external monitor (which has the menu bar), and I was actively using Excel on the Macbook screen, editing a formula in a newly-added column. A few keystrokes back Excel had lost keyboard focus (as happens every five minutes or so, apparently a known problem for Rosetta) but as usual clicking on the desktop and then in Excel brought it back.
Between two keystrokes, total crash. Both screens went pale blue with no messages of any kind, and a few seconds later I found myself at the startup login screen with the generic space background. Login completion seemed much faster than after a full restart, so probably some things were either still running or in a state that let them be used without reloading. But all applications were gone; I checked with Activity Monitor and nothing was running except system tasks and my login startup items. When I restarted Excel it loaded a recovery file that was nearly current; I lost only a few minutes of work.
The console log makes it look as if the trigger may have been a failed iPhone synch operation of some kind. Just after it was logged (with a crash report sent automatically) there are a whole series of termination messages (WindowServer event port death, and a whole series of Exited: Terminated events for various applications.)
Is this a known crash? If not, what's the best way to report it? It could be helpful to the OS team to have my logs. It may be relevant that Paragon NTFS was running (though not in active use), and posted some error messages to the console log during the crash and restart.

This is an old thread, but I'm replying in case anyone can shed more light on the subject -- or if my experience helps.
I've had the same blue screen crash a couple of times with my new MacBook Pro (which replaced a MacBook Pro with an apparent hardware problem about a week ago). Though I had problems with the first machine, I never had the blue screen issue with it (and it had a virtually sound-free trackpad click, which is sadly not the case on the replacement machine). But those are stories for another day.
Anyway, I also have Excel 2004 installed on my machine (I also have Excel 2008 installed). But neither app was open during the last blue screen crash, a few moments ago. I only had a few applications open at the time: Mail, Microsoft Entourage 2008, Firefox, TextEdit and possibly Microsoft Word 2004.
I was composing an email in Entourage when the computer screen simply became blue. A few seconds later I was returned to my desktop. All of my applications had closed, and when I reopened Entourage, I found a recovered version of the email I'd been composing, with just a sentence of recent typing unsaved.
This has happened at least one other time on this machine -- again, just a blue screen that functioned like a very quick restart, with no accompanying kernel panic or error message. This machine also was giving me kernel panics the first few days I was working with it, but something -- a Firefox reinstall, a few trashed prefs and library files -- seems to have resolved that.

  • Blue Screen Crash when iTunes version 9.2 accesses iTunes store

I have posted on a previous issue regardng blue screen crash when upgrading to iTunes v9.2 but have done a few other things to try to locate the problem.
Firstly, as this is a shared computer I used a colleagues login details to login into their desktop. Then opened iTunes from there. It opened perfectly normally and found and played music stored on the computer. However, as I had noticed that iTunes was crashing when I was logged in as it was trying to access the iTunes store I then tried to accesss the iTunes store from within iTunes on my colleagues desktop. Hey presto, blue screen crash with the following error:
    * STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBF271800, 0xA811350c, 0xA8113208)
    * ati3duag.dll - Address BF271800 base at BF16B000, Datestamp 46eb3954
I then restarted my computer, unplugged it from the network and started iTunes in my desktop. It started normally with no problems. I even synchronised my iPhone without any problems to my music and Outlook (Calendar & Contacts).
I removed my iPhone, then tried to access the iTunes music store and guess what it went half way through the process and gave the Blue Screen error again.
Just for completeness sake I did the same thing using my colleagues desktop iTunes access and iTunes did the same thing again (without synching my phone obviously) and when trying to access the store it gets half way through, hangs and then it crashes.
    Any ideas???

You're having trouble with the drivers for your ATI Radeon video card or display adapter, lord.
If you've got a name brand PC and the video card or display adaptor came installed with the PC, head to the drivers and downloads page for your particular model of PC at the PC manufacturers website and try updating your video driver or display adaptor driver.
If the PC is custom/home-built, or you've added the Radeon to the system yourself, head to the AMD support website (AMD now owns ATI) and look for updated drivers for your particular model of video card or display adaptor.
If you're already up to date on your drivers, or updating didn't help with the BSOD, try heading into your Device manager and reinstalling your video drivers or Display adaptor drivers.
Do any of those measures give you any relief?

  • Login screen black on Mountain Lion

I upgraded my MacBook Pro 13 early 2011 to Mountain Lion yesterday.
I am having a problem with the login screen. About 50% of the time when I reboot, the login screen is completely blank, just plain black. The other screens I have connected show the linnen background as normal.
The login screen is there as I can login by:
    pressing down arrow
    pressing enter
    typing my password
    pressing enter
I have tried the various to try and fix it:
    zapping PRAM
    repairing the boot volume
    repairing permissions
    disconnecting my other displays
None of that did any good, it still keeps doing it.

It looks like this is being caused my the driver for my DisplayLink USB display adapter.
The driver was also causing Finder and Skype to crash.

  • Keyboard locked at the login screen

    Hey all,
i have a problem with my macbook pro (late 2010), since updated from Maverick to Yosemite 10.10 and few days later to 10.10.1
i while using "normally" surfing, emailing has crashed my MAIL and few moments later the SAFARI. Thinking a restart always can
help i did it. But after the restart at the login screen the keyboard is (b)locked (i can moving the mouse cursor) but i can't type in any
in the password field. (by the way, i can't not open the screen keyboard)
If i go to the guest account, there i haven't password (because never used this account) there is working the keyboard. But i haven't
any rights to change something at the system. Please, anyone can help me, and sorry for my bad english. Any solution without lost
    all my documents.
    Thank you very much.

Then you are not at the initial login screen - you are waking up the mac from having put the computer or display to sleep due to inactivity.
You are already logged in. are you certain you're entering the correct password?
Do you have another computer on the same network that you could try and login to your Mac via "ssh" from this other computer. If you do, login from the other computer in a terminal type window and "ssh username@IP_Address_of_Mac" and see if that helps (substitute username and ip address of the mac for the user and IP address of the mac). You can then do a "sudo restart" and try the safe boot and reboot. This assumes you had "Remote Logins" enabled in the Sharing System Preferences though so it may not work depending on how that is set now.
So you don't see any dots appear in the password field as you type - do you? Are you sure the Caps-Lock key is not active (your password is case sensitive so if the CapsLock is on accidentally then you will never be able to login this way until you turn it off). If the CapsLock LED is not working you have no way of knowing if it's on or off, so if one attempt at loggging in does not work (and you see dots appear in the password field as you type) then press the CapsLock key once and try again.
If you don't see any "dots" appear in the password box
    Good luck...
ps - in any event you can always press and hold down the power button for about 5 seconds to force a shutdown but this can cause problems and not recommended except as a last resort.

  • Mac on Snow Leopard keeps looping back to login screen

    Hi, Everyone,
I have a MacBook, late 2008 It originally had 120 GB hard drive. Because I had less than 10 GB of space left, I replaced that with a 320 Western Digital Scorpio Blue HD (by myself, with an antistatic strap, etc). Everything seemed fine for a few days. Lots of space, immediate responsiveness with programmes, etc....nothing could be better. Then the system started getting sluggish, and I started getting spinning beach ball clicking between apps. Every time I ran verify disk permissions, there was a long list of permission repairs. Running repair disk never yielded a result other than everything being okay. I even created a flashdrive with the installation software. And I ran Onyx to try to clean things out.
Then a few days ago, after restarting my computer (I may have done an update, but am not sure), my computer slowly booted up, came to the login screen, I entered my password, my desktop appeared and it "hung" for about 30 seconds, then the screen turned blue and went back to login screen. I made several attempts to login, but always got the same result.
I used my bootable flashdrive (which I created with SuperDuper to contain the installation disk before I installed the new hard drive) to check and repair permissions. Each time I did that, I got the same permission errors. Again, nothing detected with disk verification/repair.
When I start up the computer in safe mode, everything is fine except Safari kept crashing.
Deleted and reinstalled safari to no avail. Still crashed. No problem in Firefox.
In the regular mode (not safe mode), I reinstalled Flash, restarted, then back to the looping to the login screen.
Still no problems in safe mode.
At first I thought there would have been something with the new hard drive, but everything works fine in Safe Mode, so I'm wondering if there is something with Safari or Flash.
I've updated ClamX and run a ClamX scan as well to check for viruses/Trojans.
    Please help.
    Help!

Okay, I reinstalled Safari under another admin account. No problems there, and --so far--no problems in my main account now.
    What has happened is this.
You installed a new hard drive, it came from the factory with some bad sectors on the drive.
You laid your new OS X and data over these bad sectors and now having issues in various locations.
The drive automatically maps off these bad sectors when it gets a read request from something your using, however it takes some time before it realizes such is the case, (thus the spinning beach ball as OS X is waiting) then it moves the data to a new sector and maps off the old one.
Also as you use the computer, your writing data to new bad sectors on the drive, which haven't had their turn yet enough to be read and hopefully mapped off by the drive.  This is why your problem appears to be changing as it goes on.
    Look at your problem timeline:
Then the system started getting sluggish, and I started getting spinning beach ball clicking between apps.
This is likely a problem with the swap file which is stored on the hard drive when you run out of RAM memory with a lot of programs and files open.
The swap file was stored across bad sectors, which the drive couldn't read well and thus you got the OS X spinning beach ball effect.
This file location moves locations to free space on the drive, expands and contracts as you load things up to use.
You  have done a update, which added more data to the drive and/or triggered a response from OS X data written on a bad sector which has hung your computer.
When I start up the computer in safe mode, everything is fine except Safari kept crashing.
Safe Mode disables  at boot software, video and other things so OS X is in a reduced state, the bad sectors are being avoided as their data is not being called.
Safari is crashing because it too is corrupted, which your later post you reinstalled it and now it's fine, because it was written to a clear space on the drive without bad sectors issues.
So your going about a "piece meal" restore method, next will be OS X, then all your programs, then a new user account because your User/Library will get screwed up etc., etc.
Instead of this long pain, just follow my first post instructions and it will cure everything in one clean shot
If the drive itself is bad and that's causing your bad sector problems, which you will soon find out and can get it replaced. The way your going it's going to keep giving you problems of various sorts for quite some time.
I also tried the SMART check and it passed--no errors or bad sectors.
That only provides a current bad sector count, which you say is zero, which is typical for a new drive as it hasn't read enough from the drive to find the bad sectors yet.
In order to really find bad sectors on the drive, software would have to continously read data written to the entire drive over and over and over again so the drive will finally "trigger" the mapping off process. This would take days or even weeks to complete on large drive, so obviously the software isn't doing this.
All drives come with a few bad sectors, the automatic mapping off process upon reads usually takes care of it, however you have more bad sectors than normal, which might have occured:
1: Higher than normal amount of bad sectors from the factory.
1: Bad drive from the factory causing bad sectors.
2: Your moving the computer while the drive is in operation that the heads struck the platters causing the bad sectors.
So a Zero Erase in Disk Utility, a fresh OS X install from the disk, fresh programs from original sources and vetted files from backup is the sure means to cure the whole mess. Bad sectors and data corruption.
The DU Zero Erase proceedure does a pretty adequate job mapping off failing sectors, it takes hours to complete and not days.
Bad sectors causes data corruption, so you really can't trust a previous clone or TimeMachine backup of this corrupted data to restore with (except vetted user files), some here have done that only to wonder why their problems returned after the zero erase was completed.
If you restored the new drive with SuperD from the earlier drive, you also might have carried data corruption from that drive over too.
So with a fresh install of everything, only thing that can be corrupted is your user files, which you restore from a clean backup and/or delete the ones causing problems.
    Take care and good luck.
