Note: In lion, that library is hidden. In the finder, click the Go menu and then hold down the Option key to make it appear.

  • Gray screen won't load

My computer will turn on but goes to the gray screen with the apple and loading symbol. It stays on this page. Won't take me to log in. What should I do?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • IPhone Update screen won't load

My iPhone says that there are App Updates waiting - but when I go to the App store, the updates won't load for selection - just a blank screen and no activity.

A few other uses have had the same problem, for some it just went away, for some others it went away when they updated to 6.1. For some other iit is still prsent.
You can try updating the apps in your itunes library and syncing.
Next would be to restore the iPod.

  • I am trying to re-download purchased songs, but screen won't load.

So a long time ago, I had bought the Beatles Box set and successfully transferred all 249 documentaries, albums, and songs to my iPod Touch 3rd generation.
And now I recently purchased a new iPod Touch 5th generation, and I'm trying to re-install the songs and videos and albums. So I followed these steps:
iTunes Store (on the iPod) > More > Purchased > Music > All > The Beatles
Once I touch "The Beatles," it takes me to a loading screen and never loads the page. I tried waiting 5 minutes and gave up.
Any suggestions of what to do to fix this problem?
Sorry for reposting and creating spam, but I didn't want people to think the question was solved. Since I accidentally clicked "This solved my problem" on one of my replies.

  • Just Installed CC - Apps screen won't load

I just downloaded CC, and I want to install Photoshop and Lightroom, but I can't even get the app screen to open.  It just keeps loading. I have tried restarting and accessing the downloads through the website, and the same thing happens.  It just keeps showing the circular loading icon.  Help, please!Just

I had this issue and called tech support. Here is what eventually worked for my situation.
Force Quit all the Creative Cloud apps first with Activity Monitor
    Uninstall CC for desktop
Renaming AAMUpdater folder in Library>Application Support>Adobe>AAMUpdater  (put .old at end of name)
Renaming OOBE folder in Library>Application Support>Adobe>OOBE  (put .old at end of name)
Renaming Adobe Application Manager folder in User>Library>Application Support>Adobe>AdobeApplicationManager  (put .old at end of name)
Renaming OOBE folder in User>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Adobe>OOBE  (put .old at end of name)
Also deleted these folders in the process: Adobe Application Manager, Adobe Creative Cloud, OOBE ( would tell you where they were located but they are in my trash now and I am afraid if I put them back it will mess Creative Cloud up)
Running CC Cleaner: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Remove everything you do not use. I only left CS5 (still installed on my machine).
    Reinstall Creative Cloud
That is what worked for me. Hope it helps. I am running OS X 10.9.5

  • Startup problem, home screen won't load after password is typed in

    i have a MacBook
after the password is typed in the light on the keyboard doesnt shine anymore and It doesn't load
is there a problem with the charger or my laptop

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176I would not say it's a.charger problem. Are you saying that after logging in the screen goes black? First try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R  keys for three chimes at startup. Then try a safe boot by holding down the shift key at startup. This will not load all extensions, but you can access your files and apps and run safari. Do you have The install dvd as you show snow leopard as your operating system. You can also boot to that and run disk utilities to check and repair the drive and permissions. If no dvd you will have to use single user mode to run a check and repair.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

  • Skype login screen won't appear

This morning my profile was working fine, in fact I added the note that I would be in around 9:30.  Well, I was in around 9:30, but now my profile won't appear on screen so I can't change my message!  It acts like it's going to open, and shows a thumbnail on the task bar as if it's working, but window does not appear on screen.  Windows 7, IE 10, Skype 7.7

Try to reset all Skype settings. Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old. Next go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder. Restart Skype. N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

  • Secure login page won't load

I have a problem that is driving me crazy involving my MacBook's (older Core Duo) wireless connectivity. I'm trying to connect to a corporate server (https://loginpage.aspx) using my home wireless network, Netgear router (WGT624). It starts as a browser based connection for login, successful login launches the Citrix client, but I can't even get the login page to load, and here's the crazy part (to me).
If I turn off the Airport card and connect an ethernet cable I can load the login page. If I hop onto another open wireless network the login page loads. On my iMac (older Core Duo) I can load the login page using ethernet cable or Airport card. Both computers have the same updates and network settings. I have tried both Safari and Firefox, even IE, in multiple users. I reset the router. I reinstalled the Citrix client, not that the process gets that far.
So I'm left with two thoughts, the Airport cards MAC address has been blocked by the corporate firewall (even possible??), or there's some file deep in a (.)hidden folder that is causing a problem.
Hopefully someone reading this can give me another approach, short of trying a complete reinstall.

  • Lion boot screen won't load?

I recently upgraded to Lion OS X on my iMac 27 and it seemed ok for a day or 2 then last night I shut it down and this morning it wouldn't boot. It goes as far as the mac logo on a white screen and a spinning circle and then goes off to a white screen. It has been rebooted several times and has been able to log back in with no problems. I tried to do a Recovery via the Option button when booting but its all locked up. As in can't click or select anything.

the same thing happened to me after the last Snow Leopard update, right before Lion came out... and i couldn't get time machine to do a restore... glad you got lucky with that.  i ended up doing a complete reinstall of the OS, and then restoring my data.  had to reinstall all my software - no big deal - but at least all my documents, photos and music was able to be restored.
i thought it was hard drive failure at first.... almost ended up sending in for replacement.
anyway - good luck - hope it doesn't happen again.
