Login takes me to Darwin/BSD - HELP!

Upon booting and logining in, a black screen appears with this:
Darwin/BSD (Geneva-Raes-Computer.local) (console)
Login:
I am unable to login. When I try to input any information it prompts 'Could not determine audit condition'
How can I get to the Desktop?

If you were installing system updates and the machine crashed, then it means that only a partila update occurred, and some files have been changed and others haven't, making the machine confused.
Your best option at this point is to back up all your files, boot from the install CD, erase the drive and install the OS from scratch...fresh. Then do all the updates then install your applications and bring back your files.

  • My login page goes to Darwin/BSD. I would like to transfer my photos.

My G4 opens to the login page. I click my user name and when I type the first letter of my password the screen changes to a black screen with white type starting with "Darwin/BSD." A couple of lines down there's a user name request, which I do, then hit return. Then a password request, which I type in, hit return. Then I'm stuck.
Is there a code I can type in to access the photo files and move them onto my new computer?
Addtionally, I've restarted from the Tiger installation disk. I can't archive and reinstall because I don't have enough memory.
I've restarted in OS 9.2 and tried to trash unnecessary programs, etc. then emptied the trash to make room but that hasn't made a difference.
I stuck a thumb drive into the USB port to see if I could move photos onto that but the computer says it can't enumerate it so I removed it.

Sounds like for some reason, your computer may be trying to start up
in Single User mode. You may have to see if there is a way to make it
reboot or restart normally from the odd screen you get after trying to
put in your password. And it also sounds like there is a problem in there.

Starting up in single-user or... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
You could try, first, to see if starting up in SafeBoot mode, by holding
the Shift key down after the startup tone, and continue to hold it until
you get a login screen where you should be able to enter password.
And then, the computer should go to a normal looking reduced form
of Finder desktop screen. From here, you could try running Disk Utility
and in there, run 'repair disk permissions' then quit this Utility & restart.
If that does not work, then consider the above link to Single User boot.
Also, other options may include trying to start the computer from the
Installer boot disc for your OS X presently in the computer, and use its
Disk Utility from the Installer's drop-down menu options just before the
actual Installer would try to get you to reinstall. You don't need that part.
PS: You could not begin to remove enough to a flash drive to make a
difference, if the main hard disk drive is overfull and it can't find enough
room for a new system folder that an archive & install would create.

  • Locked out... boot takes me to darwin console help?

Whilst trying to make a new user account I have set my laptop hard drive from 'owner' to my username and seemingly locked myself out of the finder. when the machine tries to boot it comes up with a finder folder icon and flashes between the mac face and a "?" then after a long time takes me to the darwin console (no understanding of unix etc) . Have tried booting with Norton Disk and some basic commands like reboot but nothing is working. I know it's a silly mess and it was too late in the day for messing at this level! But any help would be appreciated.

Hi Peter011270! and Welcome To Discussions!
"Whilst trying to make a new user account I have set my laptop hard drive from 'owner' to my username and seemingly locked myself out of the finder."
Could you please explain, exactly how you did that?
And don't let Norton Disk Docter anywhere near a Mac running OS X!

    Sojourner:
I thought I'd share the more technical Unix approach first. I am not at all adept at Unix. Michael Coniff, who posted that solution also posts in the Unix Forum, but also frequents these pages. My own solution was more rudimentary. I share it here not because it is any way exemplary, but because it worked for me.
Here is an account of how I dealt with the issue:Nov 3, 2005 11:54 AM
I was finally able to get the iBook to boot from the install disk, after failing to get it to boot from TechTool Pro CD. Disk Utility reports a lot of extent allocation file overlaps that it can't repair. I was able to select my LaCie external boot drive as a Startup drive. I have TechTool Pro installed on it and am now running TechTool Pro. Hopefully this will straighten out those overlapping extent allocation files. Will keep you posted.
    Nov 4, 2005 1:24 PM
After being able to get into the iBook by booting from my LaCie boot drive I ran DU and found all kinds of overlapping directories that DU couldn't repair.
Went to TechToolPro and repaired, rebuilt directories, optimized drives (took all night; my son-in-law never did any maintenance and almost 20,000 disk fragments). So I thought, for sure we had taken care of Darwin. However, rebooted from the iBook this a.m. and, sure enough, there was Darwin again.
So I am in the process of cloning the entire drive to an empty partition on my LaCie reserved for just such emergencies. Then I plan to wipe the entire HDD and write zeros all over it. Then reinstall and restore. Hope that takes care of the little devil. Will let you know.
    Nov 4, 2005 7:59 PM
The project is complete. I have reinstalled Tiger and restored the User Folder, and the computer boots on its own. Darwin must be lurking somewhere, which is fine, so long as he doesn't show up on the display. Here is the link to that thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1047613&#1047613

  • Startup Leads to Darwin/BSD Login Screen

After scouring this discussion forum for solutions to my problem, I've come up with multiple partial answers, but nothing that really fixes my system. I was working in Photoshop (CS2) yesterday when the program quit and refused to open again. So I shut it down and rebooted the machine. The gray screen with the Apple and the progress bar came up for about 10 minutes, then switched to a black console Darwin/BSD login screen. Unfortunately, I don't know my login, because my machine is set to auto-login.
    I found this old post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1545778&#1545778
Which was VERY helpful. I followed Michael Conniff's directions carefully, checking the log and running 'fsck'. But the error messages I'm seeing are different than the ones listed in that post.
I tried restoring the NetInfo database, as per the previous post, but when I rebooted, I still got stuck at the gray screen with the Apple logo.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
    Login authorization failed (60005)!
AuthorizationRef doesn't have a usernameYou really should start a new Topic instead of tagging on to an old one, since frogface's problem has moved on from his original post.
However, given the current behaviour of the forums I will reply here if I can, since there's no guarantee of me seeing a new topic
    Standard post follows:
Where the system log shows "AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username" followed by "exiting to console", the NetInfo database is corrupt. so we will need to give you a new one. This will involve re-creating the user accounts (don't worry, this doesn't take too long) but the order in which they are created matters. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Start up in Single User Mode (see Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode for details) and type carefully:
/sbin/fsck -fyRepeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    mv -f local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
    rm -f /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
ls -ln /UsersThis last command will give you one line for each user, plus one for the "Shared" directory, which doesn't interest us. Each user will have a line like one of these:
    <pre>drwxr-xr-x 29 501 501 986 Jan 17 18:38 michaelc
drwxr-xr-x 14 520 20 476 Sep 10 2004 jdoe</pre>The second numeric field (501, 520) is the user ID (UID) and you need to list the uids against the shortname s given in the final column. Make sure you get the name right for UID 501! Then continue with
rebootWhen you restart, you should get the Setup Assistant, just as if it was a new machine. You will be prompted for all of your user information. Be careful to use the same short name as previously for user 501.
If there are any further users, these can be added, in the order of their UIDs, i.e. 502, 503 …, using System Preferences > Accounts. Again, be careful to use the same shortname. If there are any gaps in the UID sequence 501, 502, … you will need to create dummy users to fill them. These can later be deleted.
Post back if there's anything you have difficulty with …

  • Can't stop getting Darwin/BSD login; can't log in or start up in Safe Mode

Hi. I'm on an iBook G4 and I think I'm running OS 10.4.1 but I'm unsure. When I turned on my computer tonight, the grey screen popped up, but instead of going to my normal login screen, it went to the black Darwin/BSD screen.
After searching the Support site here as well as Googling, I logged into the Darwin screen and did... something with fsck. At the #root prompt, I typed in /sbin/fsck/ -fy. The screen said that if I wanted to continue checking, I needed to type in "-f", I think, so I did... It said there were "overlapping extent allocation errors" and then it said that it had repaired something. But it didn't say the hard disk "appeared to be okay."
I then (foolishly?) tried to restart my computer in Safe Mode, but it booted in Darwin again.
I then tried to log back into the Darwin screen, but this time it didn't let me -- I type in my username and password and it tells me my password is incorrect. So now I'm worried that I screwed something up during my adventures in fsck.
I also am unable to find the disk that came with my iBook (I honestly don't remember an OS X disk coming with my iBook, but it must've), so I can't reboot from the disk.
I have a desktop G4 with an older version of OS X (10.3, I think)... I'm not sure if I can use that to do Target Disk Mode for this problem or not. (That computer also doesn't have internet access; I'm typing right now from my sister's PC.)

    Juhme:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I suggest that you try this fix suggested by Michael Conniff in this thread.
Next, since it is possible that the fix may not work for you, and you may need to re-install or Archive and Install, you will need to have install disks. Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from applerescue.
If you do not have a backup of your data, yes, using Firewire Target Disk Mode will be one way to rescue your data at this point. If you need assistance with this please post back.
    Good luck.

  • Darwin/bsd login

hey, i have a powerbook running OSX - a little while ago i was online and it froze up completely. i turned it off and turned it on again and now it refues to load OSX, instead it just goes to console mode.
it comes up with a message saying:
darwin/bsd (and the name of my computer)
it then asks me to login, however no combination of login name or password helps.
i've looked around online for solutions but have yet to find any, i would greatly appreciate some help.
    thankyou

  • Cannot login [get Darwin/BSD] after installing latest Security Update?!?

"Software Update" prompted install of new Apple update - after restart, long startup wait & login at regular User screen then flashes to black "Darwin/BSD" page - then blue screen... I've run Disk Util [off Install CD], run repair & fix permissions [no change]. Performed suggested Single-User "fix" for possible corrupt NetInfo & still, no login available. Need help, other troubleshooting advice? Don't know if my next step is to re-install OS X? [am booting off an external FW drive that's brand new]

When booted into Single User mode, did you type in reboot and exit, so
the computer would know you wanted it to get out of Single User and to
start up in the GUI of your OSX? It may need such a prompt even if you
did not ask it to be in Single User in the first place.
Did SafeBoot> repair disk permissions> restart, do anything different?
The key may likely still be in the single user or fsck mode. Another user
had a similar issue recently in one of these forum pages.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Darwin/BSD login screen?

After trying to update my Powermac G3 to 10.4.8 (from 10.4.2) I got a message saying the hard drive is almost full and it couldn't install the update. The next time I turned the computer on, it took a long time to start up. When i tried to login in, it looked like it was logging in normally. The login window disappeared and the screen turned blue. The the screen went black and said
    Darwin/BSD (computer name) (console)
    login:
one account can login here and one can't. I've tried repair disk permissions, repair disk, reset PRAM, safe mode, reset NVRAM. I have network access to that computer so i can see the contents of that hard drive.
Does anyone know a way i can get Aqua to run again?

    gameguy
OK, your first three lines of the first extract, and all of the second extract, are possibly caused by disk space shortage, so we'll ignore those for now. I'm still concerned by your free disk space.
I am pretty sure that it doesn't have to do with a lack of disk space since it had been running fine for a long time with only 250MB free. Many of my colleagues would have a fit if they saw that! They think I am foolish to only have 3.8 GB free! (I've now upped that to 5.8 GB).
Thomas suggested removing the vm swap files—that would do no good since they are removed at startup anyway. But as soon as you restart, the firs swap file will be created, and it requires 67MB.
Thomas's other suggestion, to try a Safe Boot, is a good one, because it will force a check and repair of your disk. It may not get you to the GUI login, but at least we'll know your filesystem is OK. See:
Mac OS X: How to Start Up in Safe Mode
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Safe Boot Takes Longer Than Normal Startup
Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot
Hopefully the last of these won't be applicable.
When you've done that, post back and we'll try to address the "AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username" problem, which is, as you mentioned, a NetInfo database issue.

  • PLEASE HELP! Darwin/bsd is gone? But new problem!

    Okay, here is the story.
I came home after a trip and I was presented with the Darwin/BSD problem. Well I did what the other threads said and checked my log. My log said things like "authorization failed" but no "exiting to consol" There were PAGES AND PAGES AND PAGES so I didn't check it all. I figured i'd take it into an apple store or something... So I waited about a week. Then I turend it on again and BOOM. I was presented with "Choose your language" as if my Apple was completely restarted. Well I got really excited and told it english, and watched the welcome video.
    Then I picked my country...
    And then..
It said "Do you already own a mac?"
    And I had three choices
"-Transfer my information from another mac
-Transfer my information from another partition on this mac
    -Do not transfer my information"
Well see this is where another problem starts. See.. I don't KNOW if I "partitioned" my hard drive.. I sort of doubt it, unless its like automatic.. Well I surely didn't want to "NOT transfer" my information, so I clicked the partition one, and it went to a screen where it began searching. WEll it searched...
    and it searched...
    and it searched...
    For days, hahah.
I finally gave up and FORCE turned it off because the GO BACK button would not work...
This same thing happened twice, and at this very moment I'm at the same screen asking me how I want to transfer my information.
And let me tell you this- I CAN NOT lose this info on my computer. It is some of my most valuble documents... so PLEASE, PLEASE someone help me. Do I say "Do not transfer" amd it will already be on there? Or do I take it to the apple store and get them to retreive my harddrive information somehow in single user mode or something.
    Gosh, please helpp

Choose not to transfer your information, and then create a new account with the original short name. If you previously created multiple accounts on the system, recreate them all in the same order they were initially created. None of your data will be erased.

  • Powerbook stuck in Darwin/BSD Terminal... HELP!

My Powerbook/OS is acting up and I can't get past the Darwin/BSD Terminal. I've tried starting up using various startup key functions. I've checked my drive in Single User Mode and everything checks out OK, but I can't access disk utility by pressing C at startup. For some reason my Powerbook won't boot off of any of the OS Install discs that I have. It also won't run by holding down the shift key into Safe Mode. I did reset the PRAM and PMU and also ran the fsck command line utility, but it still reverts back to the Darwin/BSD Terminal when powered on. Any suggestions on what I should do next to get a functioning OS would be appreciated. I'd prefer not to have to re-format my drive and re-install everything, so if there are any other solutions please let me know. Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the quick response and suggestions Carolyn. I appreciate it. Do you think that running either DiskWarrior or TechToolPro will get me up and running again or does it sound like I might need to completely re-format and re-install everything. Could the fact that the Powerbook is only booting to the Darwin/BSD terminal indicate something other than scrambled partitions/directories or is that the likely problem? I'm hoping the situation isn't too serious. If anyone else has seen this issue before please let me know what route you had to take to get things in order again.

  • Darwin/bsd problem

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my iBook G4. I see many people having the same problem and read many of those threads but most people have a slighly different thing happening from mine. So here is mine.
After turning on mac you will see Apple logo with grey background with a wheel thing spinning.
Then blue background and spinning...... Black screen and white text that says
    "Darwin/BSD (s-Computer.local)(console)"
    login:
I type login(or whatever letter, seems like it doesn't matter what I type) and hit "Return".
It says "Password:" and I see a white cursor but I can't type anything..... Only thing that I can do is hit Reurn but then it turns into blue screen and comes back to black screen again.
Having read other people's post on this forum I tried to do the same thing like "Command+S", "Command+C"...... or fsck...? I am sorry I really don't know what these things are doing but at least I am trying to get a grasp of what is going on but I gave up. Is
Fortunately I had another computer so I ended up on this forum. Obviuosly I like to know how to get out of this but another question is "Is it possible to transfer all of the data from this iBook to the computer I am using now?" I have a firewire cable but since iBook is not moving, you cannot transfer data?
    Any help would be appreciated......

    Thank you very much Niel.
I thought in order to do that I turn on my desktop one (the one I am using now) with T held on? I was doing that and yellow sign was flashing. I waited, waiited for maybe 20 min and it didn't go anywhere from that blue screen with yellow sign still flashing. So I thought maybe I was not doing right thing. Or does it take that long to transfer?
    Thank you again.

  • Login takes me to C: directory page

All of the sudden, Skype is opening up a C: directory after I submit my log-in credentials.  I cannot open Skype.  I can open my Skype account, but not the call control site / page.  I've uninstalled, reinstalled, cleaned out my regestry and reinstalled - nothing is working.  I'm Windows 7, pentium, 64bit, Lenovo.  Any suggestions would be apprecaited!

I recently gave my old G3 Tower (beige) to a friend who has never had a home computer. She loved it until yesterday! The G3 is running 10.2.8 that I installed (originally it was 8.5, then I went to 10.1 and 9.1 then to 10.2.0 and 9.1 then to 10.2.4 and gave up 9.1 then to 10.2.8. I also upgraded the memory, from 256 to 384 and added a USB 2 port card to take a printer and Zip.
When I was using it all was (mostly) well apart from it occasionally being really difficult to start up if I had shut down for any period of time - I usually just put it to sleep, but if I was away on a business trip I would shut down. I found that resetting the PRAM, holding down the tiny restart button for 10 seconds and reseating the USB board worked - (tedious, but it worked).
My chum called me today in a panic because she is getting the Darwin-BSD console screen. I went over an checked out everything. Did the PRAM routine mentioned above - still the same problem. Worse, the console log in screen does not recognise my log in or password. My 'hands-on' computing background is UNIX - but that was a long while ago, so I tried (what I think is the default) - 'root' as the login + 'password' as the password - but no joy.
Now I'm stuck. Do you think that resetting the NVRAM would work? (first time I've ever heard of this wheeze)
I was going to reinstall the OS, but if I do this my chum will have lose all her files and apps.
    Can anyone help me please
    Thank you
    Patricia
