Login to a Mac thru a server

I want to login to my Mac thru my home server is there software to do this?

Depending on what OS your server is running will depend on the software you use.  But just about any VNC software will let you bring up your Mac's Desktop from another computer.
You can read more about it here: http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-VNC-on-Mac-OS-X

  • Flying Blind into a Mac OS X Server Password Reset

    Let me preface my questions with the note that I am experienced with general OS X user administration but I am coming off of 5 years of heavy Windows network consulting and administration. I'm comfortable with the command line (have a good deal of *nix experience) and patient enough to read everything when solving problems of this sort.
    I am going into a site with almost zero documentation, where the existing network admin was the jack of all trades in IT support for the company. The old admin up and quit and now we have no access to login to the Mac OS X Server. I do not know if it is running open directory (all os x clients are 'local' users but each user does have the ability to login to shares on the server with a user/pass).
    I believe the server is 10.5.x
    We need to reset the admin user password, but if it is running OD will I run into issues if I follow the standard reset using the install disk?
    How can I determine if it is actually running open directory without a logon account?
    Suggestions welcome! I'm searching apple support, forums, and googling thoroughly as well, but figured posting here can't hurt.

    Using the standard password reset should not affect other accounts.

  • Can't login to Mac OS X server website after password reset

    Hi,
    I set up Mac OS X server for our small company and tried resetting the password of my network account that is managed via profile manager.
    So, under Accounts->User->MYUSERNAME->reset Password, I typed in a new one and hit ok.
    Now I can't login to the server website anymore (for editing our wiki or using profile manager etc.), neither with the new one nor with the old one.
    I already tried different passwords (resetting it again and again), I looked at the password directive, I checked my user name, tried to login from different computers and tried logging in with another account (which worked quite fine, so it's just my account). Finally I searched the internet for a solution for quite some time but didn't find anything similar.
    It would be great, if somebody could offer some advice.
    Best regards.
    Lasse

    Solved it by deleting the user and creating a new one with the same userID.
    Maybe it occured because I marked the "user has to change password after first login" box when resetting the password but didn't yet allow him to do so in the webpages menu?!?

  • Mac OS X Server : cannot login

    I have a Mac OS X server 10.9.5.
    Since a recent update of the Server App, I have the following problems :
    - cannot login via imap and smtp to my server
    - cannot "connect as" my self in Finder any more to see my home directory on the server from an Imac Server running also OS X 10.9.5
    my server is accessed for the email as mail.agilebuild.com and when I connect from the IMac it is known as "agilebuild.local".
    I think that I might have called the server ilantoutseul.agilebuild.com back when I set up Open Directory.
    I see the following messages in /var/log/system.log
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi Antoine,
    According to this log at least the time between the server and client is off.
    Dec  7 14:03:12 192.168.1.79 kdc[57]: Too large time skew, client time 2014-12-07T13:53:17 is out by 595 > 300 seconds -- [email protected]
    Verify that both the client and the server have the same time, otherwise kerberos will not work.
    Then open the terminal.app on your server and show us the output of:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
    It will not change anything just give a reply about the hostname of your server.
    That will give us more info on how to fix your problem.
    Goodluck

    Just got Mac book pro. I can't connect to office remotely thru the remote window. My office is window based and I have no problem connecting while at the office thru the server but cannot at home. Any help would be appreciated!

    This what my IT replied with:
    That teh MacBook cannot connect with RWW because it requires Active-X to connect.  That MAc browsers (Safari) do not use Active-X but only Windows (IE) uses Active-X control.
    It would seem to me that there must be a way around this. Any help?

  • Mobile account login about 10 mins on mac os x server

    Hi there!
    I successfully created mobile user accounts. When I log-in from my power book the mobile user is created and synched. If I try to log-in on my G5 workstation where mac os x server is installed the log-in procedure takes about 10 mins. Logging in with local accounts is as fast as one would expect.
    A look into system.log shows that there are problems to mount the users mount point. Please see:

    Did I miss something? Why can't I log-in my mobile user on the server machine?
    Thanx in advance
    Gerhard

    Looks like Apple has decided that access to the root user is not a needed thing for most users.  I called Apple and asked about this issue as I had just had it occur - and I was logged into terminal BEFORE update to 10.6.8 as root - after I was unable to do so -
    Apple walked me thought this -
    System prefs ---->Accounts -----> unlock ------>
    Click on Network Account Server "Join"  ----->
    Choose "Open Directory Utility"  ------->  This opens directory utility window ----->  Unlock lock at bottom.
    Go to "Edit" Menu and choose "Enable Root user" ------>  it will ask for password.  ( only 1st time after 10.6.8 update)
    Now you can log into the root user in your terminal.
    You can disable the root user - this will prevent you from logging in as root in terminal.
    I am not sure - but is there a security RISK here?  The option to re-set the root password via the above method ( as an admin user) - but with out re-booting the machine and using the install DVD?
    My 2 cents.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 on Xserve 2009 - Admin Account Won't Login

    Hello,
    I installed the Lightspeed Server demo on my server - other accounts login, and I can use the admin credentials to access the server (Server Admin, AFP, etc), but auto login does not work, and the login window shakes when I try to login to that account on the server. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    First off I would check the console and see what it says when you try to log in with the admin account. It will give a message saying what the issue is.
    Also is this a local admin or a network admin account?

  • How to allow multiple users login to a MAC PRO without interruption?

    I have a mac pro, which runs Yosemite, (2013 module) to be used as a server. However, I have difficult to let multiple users to use the mac simultaneously.
    Objective:
        One person uses the mac directly on his desktop, while the others to login remotely though VNC from PC (win 7/Linux).
        The users have their own workspace, and they will not interrupt each other.
    What I tried:
        I created two mange accounts on the MAC.
        Account 1 was used to directly login on the mac desktop.
        Account 2 was used to login to the mac from a PC though VNC. (I also tried this from a Centos workstation with the Tiger VNC viewer)
    Problem:
    When account 2 is login, the location monitor will automatically change to that account as well. Both accounts shared exactly the same screen, mouse & keyboard actions. It is impossible to let multiple users to use the MAC pro simultaneously without interruptions.
    If I use "hdiutil attach" to mount a dmg file though SSH with account 2, the folder will automatically show in the local desktop login with account 1.
    Question:
    I read something about the "Per-user screen sharing". It says, "You can remotely log into a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login." Is it possible to do this from a PC or Linux client?
    If the problem is simply due to the poor functionality of the build-in VNC service in Yosemite, I appreciate your help to suggest some other decent VNC server for Yosemite. I know the Vine Server (OSXvnc), but I failed to install it on the mac because it is incompatible with the Yosemite.
    Does the SSH is supposed to work in this way in OSX? I mean the local account can see the folder mounted by another account though SSH.
    If any specific version of Yosemite is required to allow multiple users to access a mac simultaneously? Just as the win 7 professional allow only one user to login in at each time. But with the remote desktop server of windows, multiple users are able to use the same computer at the same time without any problem.
    If you familiar with any of the above questions, please help. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
    I know the best way to get the solution is to direct call the apple support. However, it is really not easy to call them. Because it always results with long waiting time and then the people pick up the phone will transfer my call to an expert who will make me to describe the problem again.
    Since I'm not interested in the technique details of all the problems, it is also grateful if you would provide a direct instruction to let me setup the computer for the purpose.
    Thanks you very much for your kindly help.

    I cannot help with the screen sharing, although I have just tried it with a RealVNC client on an iPad and it seemed to work OK.
    However on the disk showing on all users desk tops have you unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" check box? You can check the drives permissions with CMD i command.

  • AD account Login problem with MAC 10.6.8

    Hi All,
    We have around 50 odd MAC that are connected to windows server 2008 R2. the user were logining in to these MACs using their AD account. Recently few of the random MAC did not allow the user to login using their AD account.When analyzed though the MAC shows that it has connected to the Domain and the server is active with green button it has unbind itself from the server.I had to login in as local user bind the MAC back to get this resolved.
    Now the same has started happeneing for most of the MAC that we have and every morning I have login as local Admin and unbind / bind the MAC with the server. this gets reset once the user reboots or shutsdown.
    Have tried with few of the below solution but nothing helped:
    Solution 1:
    <key>mdns_timeout</key>
    <integer>2</integer>
    The integer value is in seconds; changing it to at least 5 should allow the Mac OS X client to reconnect to the Active Directory domain after a network interruption. In some configurations, a larger timeout value may be required.
    You can change this value by using the sudo command and a text editor to edit the preference file directly. Or you can use the Terminal command below, making sure to enter it all on a single line:
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Set :mdns_timeout 5' /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/IPMonitor.bundle/Contents/Info.plist
    Solution 2:
    I have seen all of the probable solutions and tried everything and still I am getting issues with 10.6.6 and after rebooting the Mac gets unbind. Or the Mac gets Network Accounts Available even when not accessing the list of users from AD. But the thing that I have done that has solved all my issues with AD on the Macs is to uncheck the box to search on all domains. For some reason I am seeing that when the Macs have this option checked, it searches through out the forest on the same domain controller more than once, so AD stops the handshaking of the authentication.
    I hope this helps like it did on our Network, since then I have not seen the Macs lose the binding or slow SMB.
    If you've tried this please let us know.
    TIP: Uncheck Allow Authentication from any domain for Mac AD problems
    Wednesday, April 20, 2011
    Steven Wells sent a fix and an explanation of problems with Macs losing their binding to Active Diretory:
    Unchecking "Allow authentication from any domain in the forest" is working at our college. We have been beating our heads on this for about 2 terms, with no understanding of why it works in some places and not in others. When we found this working, our IT guy said that the Security SID is being duplicated, when it looks in other domain forest, and that is what is causing the problem. This is the first time I have found an explanation for the problem.
    If you've tried this approach please let us know.
    Solution 3:
    Solved it. Create a file in Textedit with the name 'auto_master' (no file extension) with the following contents:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master # Use directory service
    /net -hosts -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home auto_home -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    #/Network/Servers -fstab
    /- -static
    Place this in /etc/ folder
    Hope this helps

    This was taken from Dane Riley's imaging building for DeployStudio.
    With Mac OS X Leopard every Mac is now running a KDC (Kerberos Distribution Center). Basically each imaged machine is using the same security certificate and hash. Deploying a single image will deploy the same KDC to every system. This [Apple] article covers how to reset the local KDC so that each system is unique. Basically, do the following:
    Launch Keychain Access
    Search for com.apple.kerberos.kdc and delete all 3 items
    Using Terminal type sudo rm -fr /var/db/krb5kdc
    After deployment, perhaps using Apple Remote Desktop to all systems, re- establish the KDC by typing sudo /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC
    If you've tried this approach with Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, or even Lion, please let us know. .
    TIP: More on a kerberos fix for AD binding problems
    Monday, November 14, 2011
    Mehdi Mafi updated his Friday report about Mac OS X 10.6 problems binding to Active Directory:
    You may want to add this. If the Mac keeps unbinding from AD (people can't log in to a Mac), here is how to fix it:
    Unbind it from Domain
    Launch Keychain Access
    Search for com.apple.kerberos.kdc and delete all 3 items
    Using Terminal type sudo rm -fr /var/db/krb5kdc
    Re-establish the KDC by typing sudo /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC
    Bind it to domain again ( When you bind, uncheck allow authentication from any domain in the forest in: Directory Utilitiy-> Advanced Options\Administrative ) this fix the issue that sometimes it can' find AD under search space.
    If you tried this please let us know.
    Solution 5:
    For Snow Leopard AD login issues, use upper case domain
    Solution 6: for .local
    To create this StartupItem, create the following directory as root:
    /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth
    Then chown it to root:wheel and chmod it to 755. These must also be the owner/permissions on the two files it will contain, below:
    Contents of our /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth/FixADAuth:
    #!/bin/bash
    . /etc/rc.common
    date > /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    n=0
    AuthSuccess=0
    while [ $AuthSuccess != 1 ]
    do
    id Administrator && AuthSuccess=1 || networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet "Empty"; networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet middlewich.local; n=$(($n+1))
    done
    echo Authentication successful: $AuthSuccess >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log echo Operation count: $n >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    date >> /var/log/FixADAuth.log
    Contents of our /Library/StartupItems/FixADAuth/StartupParameters.plist:
    Description = "Fixes Active Directory authentication issue";
    Uses = ("Disks");
    Obviously you'll need to change "middlewich.local" to your own domain name (and the network interface name if your connection is wireless). The script checks to see if it can see the user "Administrator" on the domain, as he's a fairly common bloke, but if you've renamed yours for security reasons then pick another one. I've also included some logging functionality for debug purposes, so you can verify how well the script is working if you need to and time it in your environment before telling the users how long to wait. The /var/log/FixADAuth.log file will contain the date/time the process started, the success variable set to 1 (just to verify), how many DNS operations were required to fix the problem, and the date/time it ended. For us the time difference is normally about +30-40 seconds with around 120-180 operations taking place. Once you're happy with the script, you can strip it down to its bare functionality if you like, like so for us:
    #!/bin/bash
    . /etc/rc.common
    AuthSuccess=0
    while [ $AuthSuccess != 1 ]
    do
    id Administrator && AuthSuccess=1 || networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet "Empty"; networksetup -setsearchdomains Ethernet middlewich.local
    done
    I hope this helps someone!
    Regards

    You are welcome.
    But the question is 10.6 mac  just like 10.6.8  , as long  as its the same and works.
    Yes. You can save some updates by using the combo update.

  • The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password

    I am running SL Server 10.6.2, wiki works but when a person clicks an attached file in a wiki and then selects "open" they get a login popup with the notification The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password. It doesn't matter what they put into the login/pass it comes back. If they hit cancel then the document opens. If they click save then it saves with no issue. I can type in the admin login/pass of the server and it works. Does this mean the security settings to the location of the files is wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!

    By the way they are using Internet Explorer 7 when opening these documents.

  • Mac OS X Server in Mac Mini

    I recently bought an used mac mini and when I turn it on it asks me for the user login information which I do not have. When I get to the login menu it says MAc OS X SERVER, So I guess it has the Server installed?(I don't understand much about the "server") ... I tried restoring the mac mini with the mac mini CDs but I guess since it has OS X Server installed it won't let me do it because I keep getting the Kernel Panic. Is there anyway I can restore the mac?
    thanks!

    This would be better asked in a different forum like http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=158
    but since you're here...
    If you boot from the disks thatcame with the Mini, you should be able to erase the HD using disk utility. You should then be able to install OS X. You can also skip DiskUtility, and choose the erase & install option.
    If you're getting panics while trying this, you are likely looking at a bad HD or some other bad hardware (like memory, or even the logicboard).

  • I want to de-install mac-excel test version and get the error message: you have not the privileges to de-install. Please login with the Mac-OS account you have installed mac-excel originally'. I don't know this account anymore. I am sysadm

    I want to de-install mac-excel test version and get the error message: 'You have not the privileges to de-install. Please login with the Mac-OS account you have installed mac-excel originally'. I don't know this account anymore. Possibly it does not exist anymore. anybody out there who can help ?

    Hi, I may suggest to activate the root account and try the uninstall process from that account. To do so, you have to:
    Go to System Preferences a open up the Users pane;
    On the left side of the pane, you shuold see Login Options;
    Enabled editing option clicking on the lock (it will ask your password);
    Once the pane is enabled, you should see something like Server Account Network (sorry my OS is in italian, so I don't exactly know the right translation), and right next to it a button;
    Click on that button, and a new pane shows up. Click on Open Directory Utility, and on the upper bar of OS X click on Edit;
    Select Enable Root Account (you can set a password, or not);
    Done that, you should log out and when the login window show up, type on the user field "root" and the password you choose;
    Theorically, from this account you will be able to unistall the application.
    After completing your task, I reccomend you to disable the root account, just by loggin in your personal account and repeating the steps I described before. Hope it helps

  • Mac OS X Server: the best option?

    We are an expanding small design/web creation business moving soon from 6 to 9 team members. Workstations are all stand-alone in terms of software, which ranges from Office X to full Macromedia Studio suite etc. running over a wireless 11g network and 8Mbps DSL. Macs range from G5 PPC's to latest intel chip iMacs and MacBook Pros (oh, and a Sony Vaio desktop PC) . I would be really grateful if the group would comment/confirm if Mac OS X server would be a logical step and be worth the expense - literally but also in the time required to learn/setup/run (I do have a technical background)!
    I am thinking of running Mac OS X server from an existing G5 PPC (1.6GHz, 768Mb, 80HD) - have looked at the Xserve, we simply do not have the space/infrastructure for a rack solution. My reasons for looking at a OS X Server are:
    - Minimise time spent on maintenance: boot all mac workstations from single OS image on the server - use this to mainatain latest updates.
    - Centralise storage and backup: plan to use an external hot-swap RAID.
    - Split workstations into defined groups: 'admin' (using mainly office) and 'designer' (creative software) and manage access rights to files.
    - provide more integrated iCal, Mail and Address Book services (not sure what is on offer as we already do some of this via .Mac).
    It makes sense to me to run network versions of core software (from the server), but I understand that this is not possible - or cost is prohibitive? We also have various individual requirements, for example people using laptops at work, home or travelling (how do they tap into the server, what would the benefit be) and also the need for considerable amounts of HD memory for the designers...
    My apologies for typing so much, but wanted to give an overall status - so have I missed anything? What more can OS X Server bring to make our lives more effiecient/effective?!! I'm itching to buy a copy, but really need to justify it.
    Thanks...

    Hi & welcome to the forums.
    running over a wireless 11g network
    As designers, most likely working with large files, you will appreaciate wires if you can get them in.
    I would be really grateful
    if the group would comment/confirm if Mac OS X server
    would be a logical step and be worth the expense -
    literally but also in the time required to
    learn/setup/run (I do have a technical background)!
    Yes, definitely.
    I am thinking of running Mac OS X server from an
    existing G5 PPC (1.6GHz, 768Mb, 80HD)
    Fine. Remember you have the option of a 10-user version of Mac OS X Server software. This will save you plenty of £'s.
    boot all mac
    workstations from single OS image on the server - use
    this to mainatain latest updates.
    NetBoot (as this is called) would be a non-starter over a wireless network. In any case, the time spent config'g, tweaking, troubleshooting, and downtime (due to sngle point of failure) with netboot can be extensive.
    I suggest you spend your time creating a perfect, STABLE, master image, then distribute this to other machines using NetRestore. Maintain a list of changes/updates to the cleints and update your image every 6 months or so.
    - Centralise storage and backup: plan to use an
    external hot-swap RAID.
    Good idea.
    - Split workstations into defined groups: 'admin'
    (using mainly office) and 'designer' (creative
    software) and manage access rights to files.
    Good idea. You can use WorkGroup Maanager to fine tune what users are able to see on the network, which applications they are able to use and how their desktops appear. This can be done at User, Group or Computer level.
    - provide more integrated iCal, Mail and Address Book
    services (not sure what is on offer as we already do
    some of this via .Mac).
    Mail, yes.
    Unfortunately iCal & AddressBook are still non-starters in terms of multi-user sharing. Look to Leopard in Q2 2007 to update this.
    It makes sense to me to run network versions of core
    software (from the server), but I understand that
    this is not possible - or cost is prohibitive?
    Just run your apps locally. Especially if you only have wireless.
    We
    also have various individual requirements, for
    example people using laptops at work, home or
    travelling (how do they tap into the server, what
    would the benefit be)
    VPN is your friend.
    Also, look into Mobile Home Directories which will sync your users's data to/from the server at each login. When they are awy from the office they will have all their files with them. And you will have a server-side copy for your backups.
    My apologies for typing so much, but wanted to give
    an overall status - so have I missed anything?
    Probably
    On the fly, I would say look outside of OSX Server for your mailserver.
    FTP services are also weak in OSX Server.
    There are lots of 3rd party options for both, though.
    What
    more can OS X Server bring to make our lives more
    effiecient/effective?!! I'm itching to buy a copy,
    but really need to justify it.
    Full server documentation is here at http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/ Take a look at Appendix B of the Getting Started guide for a practical example of how a setup like yours may be config'd.
    Hope this helps,
    b.
