Login to admin account fails suddenly

Hi!
I have quite a strange problem here; I could not find infos about this (I am quite a new Mac user - and didn't have such big problems so far...):
when I started my Mac today, all my user settings etc. were gone - it seemed like my Mac was brand new (all settings as factory setting - no program remembered me - e.g. Mail or Adium or iCal). I have put my user directory on an external hard drive, and suspected that this might have been the problem (the Finder didn't show my documts or photo folders, and other things). Although the external hard drive was working fine and shown in Finder, I checked the respective settings in the control panel (user settings); it was still correctly set. Even if, I reset the path again using the "Browse" dialogue to the same folder; I was a bit astonished that the name of the hard drive shown was a bit different (OS X added a "1" behind the real names shown in Finder - so it was "sarah 1" instead of "sarah"; however, I trusted OS X in this, and thought that this was the reason why I couldn't reach my user account data via the Finder.
So I trusted the settings and left them, and then restarted: At this time, OS X gave the message that (I translate from German): "You cannot login with this user name. The login process with this user name failed due to an error."; that's where I'm stuck. The astonishing point is that the password I give is correct - and in fact, OS X also still remembers my additional question; so, a password problem seems to be ruled out. Thus, I believe that the path to my user data is still incorrect, and that some information is kept there for the start-up. Even if the Mac earlier this evening started correctly, despite the user path seemed to be corrupted (the data were not shown, as said above) - now the unavailability of the user path seems to have "worsened", and keeps OS X from logging into my account.
The account is my only administrator account; I am a bit worried that my other user accounts are not shown in the login screen - but I never used it before.
Anyway - I believe, what COULD help me would be to find a way to reset the user account path (the old path should still be on the external Macintosh HD, although most utility data are missing) - thus, I believe, what could help me would be if I could reset the user account settings so that the Mac doesn't search for the data on the external hard drive (which path seems to be wrong); however, I don't seem to be able to change the settings if I can't reach beyond the login screen.
Thus, my question: can anybody tell me how I can reach my account settings now? Is there any utility on the reset disc of my Mac that could help me to start into a safe mode that would at least allow me (after supplying the admin password) to change the admin user settings? Or does anybody have any other suggestions? I am lost here a bit, although I principally believe I can do at least a bit about Computers...
Thanks for any help! Sorry for this long text! Greetings to all readers who have survived till this point!
Björn

Hi, V.K.!
Thanks a lot for Your detailled answer! Admittedly, I had problems to follow Your suggestions exactly, because I couldn't get my Mac (mini) to start from the install DVD (I only tried disc I - it came with the mini in february, but I think it is the original install DVD - thus I believe, it should also contain the utilities You were talking about). In fact, the Mac didn't want to boot from the DVD - I guess the problem was my USB Bluetooth keyboard (Logitech), which I never tried to connect to the Mac directly.
Anyway - when I was trying different key combinations (in addition to just typing "C" to boot from the DVD) at startup to see whether the install DVD was the problem or the keyboard, I used the command-S key combination to start in single user mode... in the command line, I tried if I could find a way to make the Mac start from the DVD (which was still in the drive) - but couldn't. When I typed "exit", the Mac booted normally, and I was back in the Finder, where I could reset the problem with the user data path. Thus, this problem was solved - though in an erroneous (and thus not really satisfying) way...
Anyway, I still have the problem with my user account - although the path is now correctly set again and the Mac boots as before, all my user data and settings (including the iCal data etc.) are still not connected, although they are still on the external hard drive... The Mac does not show me the "documents" or "downloads" or "desktop" options under "places" in Finder, and also my iTunes and iPhoto libraries are not available there - although the data are still present in the user folder on the external hard drive (the one that is now set again to be my user home folder in the "user" control panel). I don't know how this happened - and why my Mac doesn't seem to recognize the data and show them. The last thing I did was to do the Leopard system update on wednesday morning (which was a Java update) - and in the evening all my settings appeared to have been erased (as described before).
Does anybody have any explanations for this - or, even better: any solutions? I feel a bit lost - as if my Mac was making jokes with me
Thanks for any hints!
With kind regards,
Björn

  • Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server - can't login with admin account

SO....i was having problems setting up network accounts from my mac Mini Server. I took it to the Apple Genius bar one night after work to get some help on why the login screen appears for Other..but could not login into any of the accounts I created.
They made an appt for me for the next morning since they had a "guy" that could help the next morning.
When I got there for my second appt..they said they don't support server issues. Only consumer products..I though the server WAS and i WAS a consumer of their products..so..they gave me a number of a consultant..of course..for pay...
So later that day I was trying some other configurations....the power came out while I was checking a monitor cable..and when I restarted I couldn't login to the master admin account.
Since mac mini server doesn't have a DVD drive..you have to boot up with their Server DVD from another computer and the Server installs it through airport.
So I did the boot up via airport from the server install DVD.
Did the Utility disk repair AND password changed. Got some error about not being to able to login if I don't change the keychains to the account.
    Rebooted the server.
    It didn't work.
So now stuck with a login window..and NO ACCESS to change anything.
    HELP!!!!

You can access to system with root account.
If you didn't enable before, boot from SLS DVD and activate from menu (after choose language).
After that, reset all the passwords (there is a menu to do that).
After that exit from installer and reboot.
At login screen you can try to login with your user and new/blank password.
If it fails, you have to login with user root and the password you choose before.
With root user, you can access to all system, be very carefull.
Now you can create a new user and import all the files (you have to do a little work with permissions)
    I hope i help you!

  • I can't login to admin account properly after installing Lion

It's been a week since I installed OS X Lion and everything was fine until a couple of days ago. When I was logging in to my account (an admin account), I could not get past the gray screen with the spinning rainbow wheel, or my desktop would show up but doesn't show any progress. I've already tried booting on Safe Mode and it worked, except that the audio input/output were disabled. I tried logging in to the other accounts and I didn't experience any problems. Please help me, I really don't know what I should do to fix and resolve this problem. Thanks in advance!

Did you enable this particular admin account when you enable FileVault?
Have a look at STEP 2 on this page: http://www.macworld.com/article/1162999/complete_guide_to_filevault_2_in_lion.ht ml

  • Login to my account fails - no desktop

My MBP started acting slow last night, really slow like in molasses. I came out this morning and it would not display the sleep login screen, so I rebooted the computer. It booted fine and displayed the user account login screen. I logged in and it gets to where it shows the default space theme background image but then stops. It never shows menus, icons, the dock, nothing that is part of the desktop or Finder. I can see and access my computer drive from other LAN Macs so I checked disk space and it was 9.7GB. I figured maybe it was too low so I freed up enough to have 12.5GB free and rebooted. Same thing.
What is going on? How can I fix this?

My problem turned out to be my MBP internal hard drive dieing. It's about 1 year old and therefore I'm glad to have Apple Care. Basically I/O errors starting increasing to the point where I had frequent application crashes, then some stopped evening opening, common ones like FF and iCal. I did a full backup and looked at the log and the I/O errors were sprinkled here and there. Then the SMART status in Disk Utilities indicated the drive had to be replaced. So hopefully tomorrow I get my MBP back with a new h/d.
As an aside... My wife's iBook 14" that she purchased fall of '04 had the screen lose one pixel column days after the 1 yr warranty ended. My advise for all LCD products is "get Apple Care". All it takes is something to go wrong with the LCD and the replacement cost of that item alone will sink you hundreds of dollars. And no, I have no connection with Apple, just a happy owner of Mac computers since 1984.

  • Trouble adding Yahoo! email account. Error: Login to the account failed, please try again.

I have read several discussions about this topic. I have tried manual set up, deleting the account multiple times and nothing works. Please help!

Now I can't speak to Catnzdogs's results of it not working after a FR ... That indeed is strange.
But I would try doing the following, as it really sounds like you have an Invalid userid & password "cached" that is giving you that error ..  So try this:
    - Go into Settings / Applications / Manage Applications, Click on the ALL Tab
    - Scroll down to  EMAIL (you may have as many as 4 of them > EMAIL, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, EMAIL AUTHENTICATOR, EMAIL ENGINE)
    - Select each 1 of them & click on Clear Data & Clear Cache for each
    - exit out of the settings
    - Launch your email App - it SHOULD prompt you for your login info & password - make sure you enter it correctly the 1st time, else it will save the bad information in cache again.
Let us know what happens & what specific error msg you get, if any.  good luck

sbcglobal.net - won't auto add, won't allow manual add, wireless is off, have deleted email AND Yahoo mail accounts, but can't re-add, turned phone off and on. Was working until yesterday, then stopped downloading mail.  Amusing correct username and password and have no problem accessing web mail from PC. Have not dropped or damaged the phone.  Feeling hosed here. Any ideas how to make it work again?

  • Main account fails to login

I am using a G4 iBook running OS X 10.4.10. I have already run repair permissions and the automated maintenance of Onyx.
The main account I use, which is not an admin account, fails to login. My wife's account and the admin account both still works. What happens is that I select the account and type in the password. When I hit enter the password is highlighted and the "log in" and "back" buttons become disabled. However, the loading bar does not appear at all and no logging in happens. I have noticed that I can still re-enter the password but the buttons are still disabled. I have the restart the computer to get back to the login screen.
This problem began immediately after the computer suddenly turned off while I was browsing the iTunes store.

Two things to try, Robert. Go to System Preferences > Accounts and see if there is anything strange in your Login Items.
Then boot from your Mac OS X install DVD and go to Disk Utility and run repair disk. You've already correctly run repair permissions (you do this while booted from your internal HD). But you have to boot from your install DVD to run repair disk. Somethin in your Mac's directory might have been disturbed when the computer suddenly turned off while you were using it. Repair disk is capable of fixing some of these problems.

  • How do I repair admin account permissions in OS 10.6.8?

An attempted installation of the the Canon XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro 1.3 has failed (stopped before installing) showing an Error = 1. The folks at Canon pro support say this is a Mac OS error, and recommended that I need to repair my admin account permissions. They suggested the following:
    1. Enable a "root user"
    2. Repair permissions under the root user account
    3. Login under admin account (hopefully now repaired) and attempt plugin installation again
Has this happened to any other FCP users and does this sound like the right process?
Is there a support article that documents the first two steps above or do I need to do this over the phone with Mac Customer Care?
Thanks in advance for everyone's advice!
    Joseph

No, that error code has nothing to do with permissions. It may mean your system installation has some dysfunction. If the above doesn't fix things, then reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Can not log into server computer with any accounts - "You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

I have a Mac mini running the latest version of OS X and Server. Been running fine and flawlessly. However, I had a strange problem with the iCloud preferences panel crashing when I tried to access it, so I rebooted. Now I can not log into the system with any accounts. My master admin account (along with all the others) gives me the error:
You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I am able to see the server from other macs and I can log into it using the same account, but it only shows me a few of the shared folders I have access to but NOT to my main directories.
Rebooting into Command-R and doing a disk utility, I try and repair permission on that drive and get a bunch of errors like:
ACL found but not expected on Users
    Repaired "Users"
ACL found but not expected on Users/.localized
    Repaired "Users/.localized"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared
    Repaired "Users/shared"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared/.localized
    Repaired "Users/Shared/.localized"
    Permissions repair complete.
But rebooting is no joy...same problem. Any idea what is going on or how to repair it? Should I do a time machine restore? Complete new OS X install? Any idea what is causing this or how to salvage it?

Got everything to re-install and it worked fine...for a few hours. Then I came in to find ALL of my network users deleted. Just GONE. Then found out the Open Directory was trashed and was unable to open, recover or restore from a backup. Looks like I may have a bad drive here.
I installed a new drive in the system, re-installed and so far (for a couple of hours anyway) the system seems to be working and stable.

  • Login Loop on admin account

I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with logging into my main account, I have 10.6.8, when I login to my main account it will either just be blue or maybe show the background image then will return to the login screen, I could access my guest account fine, so I created a new admin account and used console to grab the log when I tried to log into my original account.  Here is the results, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • No Admin account after failed Migration

Hi, I have been having many problems with the new hard drive I just got to replace a failed drive.
The first thing I did was attempt to restore from a backup with 10.6, while booted into 10.4. That gave me the gray screen of death.
Reinstalled 10.5 and attempted to restore the backup using Migration Assistant, but the harddrive with the backup didn't mount and wasn't recognized by the computer.
Then I reinstalled 10.6, and after several failed attempts, finally got the computer to recognize my backup harddrive. I tried to use migration assistant from a Guest account so I could replace the Admin account on the computer with the Admin account from the backup.
When I restarted the computer after the Migration (which looked like it had gone well), there was no Admin account, only Guest. and on top of that, it's requiring a password to login to the Guest account, but I can't figure out what the password would be, it shakes no on every attempt.
I haven't been able to check if my files are there or not, because I can't login. I did verify disk permissions, and a lot of stuff was wrong, so I repaired but still could not log in.
I'm assuming I'll have to start from scratch with a new install of the OS and then run Migration Assistant again, this time without attempting to replace the new account with the backup account. Any insights as to how I can prevent this from happening again or how I can fix it?

Thank you! Got everything back to normal... only weird thing was my harddrive didn't have room for everything that was on there before from the back up. Easy to fix, though.

  • How do I set up a different login password from my administrator password on the same original admin account?

I need to know how to set up one password for loging into my administrator account and then another for making changes to the account. Basically I want different passwords for login and admin. I already know about the different users accounts and how to set those up. I am not interested in creating a new user account. I want to be able to use one account on the computer and have one password for the login and then a different password for the administative.

Even if you could have two passwords for a single account (which you can't) I'm not sure what advantage would be over just having a normal user account and an administrative account.  It's certainly a security best practice on any operating system (Mac, Windows, Linux) to use your computer as an unprivlidged (normal) user account and have a completely separate account with administrative rights that you can use for updates, etc.  It's for the same separation of privlidge reasons that normal user accounts are not in the "sudoers" file either.
So, I'd recommend not trying to reinvent the wheel here.  Mac OS already does such a great job of automatically prompting you when an administrative privlidge escalation is needed for settings, updates, or installations.  If you really need administrative rights all of the time then you might just want to make your normal account an administrator.  This is not the best idea but if you are carefull to keep Gatekeeper settings enabled on your Mac, not allow Java in the browser, and just be careful in general on the web, then you can still stay fairly safe on a well updated Mac.
The other benefit to having a separate administrative account is that if your normal user account ever becomes corrupted you can log into the administrative account to solve the issue.
Hope this opinion helps you decide how to proceed.

  • Can't login to local NON-admin accounts-Directory Access set to server

I have a strange problem on a set of laptops that I cannot resolve and am hoping someone can help me.
    Here is the issue:
I have a set of building laptops (PowerPC, OSX.4.11) that seemingly will not "search locally" in the authentication process. The logins seem to work fine for NETWORK logins to our Open Directory Master xserve, but these machines will not login to any LOCAL non-admin accounts. The local root and local admin account logins do, however, work fine. ?? The remainder of the building computers (Intel iMacs OSX.4.11) appear to have the exact same settings and login fine both locally and via the network home directories.
    I have tried the following:
    Deleted DirectoryService preferences folder (MacintoshHD-->Library-->Preferences->DirectoryService)
Deleted the mcx cache in Directory Access
Tried adding a new non-admin user to test (still will not login)
Removed and re-created LDAP configuration (all set to custom)
Tried setting the LDAP to the automatic settings ("Add DHCP-supplied LDAP servers to automatic search policies")
Disabled all network connectivity (turned off Airport and disconnected the ethernet cable), still cannot login to local accounts
Tried to bind in LDAP configuration (when I did bind the machine, it would no longer authenticate to the network authentication server, so I did an "unbind" and restarted and it went back to performing the network logins, but still will not login to local non-admin accounts).
Reset passwords in System Prefs and also re-typed them in NetInfo Manager
    Deleted login keychains
    Deleted mcx.plist
Reinstalled the OS from disk and local logins worked TEMPORARILY--UNTIL I set the LDAP directory access to authenticate to our server (which I also need for the network logins to work),then, the issue started again.
*Same results with both ethernet and wireless connectivity enabled.
*Note: I also manage these local accounts via WGM (installed on the local machine) and even tried disabling that and still no luck.
Please help...I have spent hours and hours trying to find a solution and nothing seems to work! What am I missing??

    Mostly just a bump...
How about that .local extension, or trailing / ?

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 on Xserve 2009 - Admin Account Won't Login

    Hello,
I installed the Lightspeed Server demo on my server - other accounts login, and I can use the admin credentials to access the server (Server Admin, AFP, etc), but auto login does not work, and the login window shakes when I try to login to that account on the server. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

First off I would check the console and see what it says when you try to log in with the admin account. It will give a message saying what the issue is.
Also is this a local admin or a network admin account?
