Login users locked out of hard drive

Performed machine updates, now users logging in do not have access permission to the applications folder or the Library folder in the hard drive. Users can get to their documents, but have no access to applications. The Info screen indicates that the permission level for everyone is Read Only when logged into machine as Admin. Ran Repair Disk Permissions utility with no success.
Following two warnings appear in repair disk permission
Warning SUID File "System/LIbrary/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning SUID File "User/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired
any suggestions???

the messages in disk utility are harmless and should be ignored. they have nothing to do with your problem. what kind of update are you talking about?
I suspect the group on /Applications and /Library may have changed from admin to wheel. to confirm that run the following terminal command.
ls -ladeO /Applications /Library
post the results.

    Hi ,
I HAC on WLS 10.3.2 (Oracle Solaris on x86-64 (64-bit)).
user locks out, due to 5 invalid login attempts just after the server comes into running state.
But the strange thing is Customer is not trying to login into it.
we unlocked the user, after logging into the console with a different user.
Customer knows the username and password
Still the issue appears after few minutes.

  • New User Account has No Hard Drive Space

I also have a different problem and started a thread here. It was that thread that lead me to start this new one.
One of the people helping me there suggested I make a new user account and see if that solved my problem. I made two new user accounts, one a 'standard' and the other an 'administrator.' In both cases the new user accounts have no hard drive space, and no download or document folder in the dock.
Logging out of either of those accounts and back as myself (administrator) I have 410 gb of free hard drive space.
Any thoughts on what could be happening or how to resolve? My hard drive recently disappeared so I took it in to a Mac Genius and under AppleCare the hard drive was replaced. I did a full restore from Time Machine and have repaired permissions countless times since then and also run DiskWarrior. Repair Permissions returns a message that Apple has posted can be ignored; no other issues. DiskWarrior found two errors related to directory structure and repaired/replaced them. Other than my original problem and this new one regarding the new user accounts having no hard drive space my system runs fine.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.5.

Sorry I wasn't clear in the first post. On my way into work today I started thinking it may be time to start over as well. You mentioned archive and install - would a clean install be better (I know it will be longer)?
Also, just for clarification - when I did a Full Restore from Time Machine was that the same as say restoring from a program like SuperDuper (that clones the hard drive)?
My thinking on this is if I do clean install, I should not restore from Time Machine if the structure carries over. That could be what is causing these problems. Instead I should back up my iPhoto and iTunes libraries via the built in back-up (to an external hard drive or DVDs), back up any documents, etc. and then really start over. Do a clean install, then reload 3rd party software from the original disks and restore the iPhoto and iTunes libraries, etc.

  • Best way to clean out a hard drive.

I have a A505 S605 Satelite laptop with a hard drive full of junk. I would  like to start over by cleaning out the hard drive completely. After the hard drive is cleaned out, I will install everything using the recovery disks that I got from the Geek Squad when I bought the computer.
What is the best way to get the hard drive wiped out? Thank you for your help.

Just back up the data you need to keep onto a usb thumb drive or usb external hard drive then run the Recovery Disk to restore the system to it's factory out of box state.   IT will wipe the drive as part of the process leaving your system exactly as it came to from the factory.  You don't need to delete anything first.

  • User Locking out in LDAP

I guess it's common problem in LDAP. If the user locks out after 3 failed failed logins, The admin needs to be entered in NDS conslole and he need to be unlock after he gets a request from that user. But I couldn't find the property for single User. whatever you specify the parameter in User Lockout tab, it's valid for all the user.
i.e. if you uncheck the checkbox User lockout check box it's valid for all the users. How to unlock the particular user in NDS???
any help in this regard is really appreciable.
    regards,
    chandra

What version of WLS are you using? In the 6.0 beta, user lockout was one of
    the new security features
added. This way, WLS could detect the failure and allow administrators to
    detect password guessing
    attempts.
If this is a previous release of WLS, you will need to check the NDS
    documentation for how to unlock
    a given user.

  • Wiping out your hard drive

If I'm looking to sell my laptop and get it back to when I first purchased it, is there a way to wipe out the hard drive, and all the settings and histories to get the computer back to when you first take it out of the box and start it up for the first time?
    Thanks!

For casual users, just re-install the MacOS, being sure to use the option format the drive. Formatting and overwriting the drive is sufficient security for anyone who doesn't know you and need your specific personal data.
Don't waste your time erasing seven times, or buying a program to "securely" erase a drive. To the motivated hacker or cop, there's no difference between erasing once and erasing/overwriting seven times.
My FBI computer crime agent friend reads "erased seven times" drives every day. He says the only way to destroy data to destroy the physical platters with a hammer, ensuring the glass no longer looks like pie slices (which can be re-assembled). Wow.
If you have that kind of sensitive data, put a new drive in the machine before you sell it.

  • Out of hard drive memory

My Mac mini is out of hard drive capacity. I bought an external drive, but I am unsure which files to move onto the second drive without affecting the ability of the system to start up and perform basic functions. Mac online help was unable to answer this question for me. Can anyone out there help me?
Also, for some reason there is a discrepancy between the available size as shown by interrogating each of my root folders, and the available size as indicated by "whatsize.dmg", the software I downloaded to advise me on how much capacity I have left in the machine. Again, this problem stumped Mac online personnel. Any ideas about the best way to determine available capacity on my Mac mini?

WhatSize will be the best way to obtain a trustworthy indication of available space and space folders are taking. The Finder is designed not to be able to see certain files that are critical to MacOS, and thus while it can usually give a pretty good idea of the space a folder takes, if that folder contains hidden files it will not be an accurate figure. If those hidden files are large, it can be significantly at variance with WhatSize, which can see such files.
In terms of what you can move - it depends a great deal on what you have on your system in the first place. You can, for example, move your entire 'Documents' folder (harddrive>users>yourname>documents) to the external, because the system doesn't keep track of any content there - they are just documents. However, this often won't save much space unless you typically keep a significant number of large files in that location. You can also move iTunes and iPhoto libraries (harddrive>users>yourname>music and harddrive>users>yourname>pictures respectively), but you need to tell iTunes and iPhoto if you do this so they can find the files. You can also move any iMovie or iDVD projects, the former in harddrive>users>yourname>movies and the latter usually found in your harddrive>users>yourname folder. These latter are usually large files.
You cannot move your entire user folder or any folder marked 'library', nor the folder called 'system'. You can move the applications folder, but Apple applications such as iMovie, iTunes etc will then not update correctly.
    You can also

  • Does shutting down and starting up wear out the hard drive faster?

does anyone know if shutting down and starting up the imac repeatedly wear out the hard drive faster? I had heard that repeated shutting down and starting up of the hard drive will wear out the hard drive faster. If this is true, is it better to put the imac to sleep and shut down only when you absolutely have to or when you will be gone for a while? (e.g., going on vacation or when moving the imac). The imac manual suggests that if you are going to use the imac within a few days to put it to sleep and shut it down if you are not going to use it for a few days. Is this advice just to save you time since you don't have to reboot or will this help prolong the life of the hard drive? Of course, keeping the imac on all the time might waste energy (not sure if sleep mode saves energy). But since I use the imac practically everyday it may make sense to put it to sleep, especially if this will prolong the life of the hard drive. thanks

    Good Morning,
In my experience there shouldn't be any unnecessary wear and tear on your hard drive from shutting down your computer unless you are doing an EXTREME amount of startup/shutdown cycles.
The average user should not put enough strain on the drive to even be noticed from normal startup/shutdown cycles.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Running out of hard drive space---can I use my external hard drive-??

I have a 16GB iPod nano. I hope I can explain my problem well enough.
My laptop computer has the iTunes that I use for syncing my iPod. It has over 25gb of songs in it, but my problem is that it has completely run out of hard drive space, and I don't think I can delete anything else.
I have a 250 GB external hard drive that also has all my songs backed up on it, that has hard drive space left on it.
Is there a way to load new music into the external hard drive, that will sync up to the iPod when I connect it to the laptop, WITHOUT putting a copy of it into the laptop, and taking up space-?
The way it appears to me, and I may be wrong, is that there are 2 copies of eaxh song on my laptop---the one in my music folder, and then the one in the iTunes folder. Is that correct-?
OR, is there a way to remove some of the songs from the laptop, and put them into the external hard drive, but will still sync up to the iPod-?
Thanks for any help that anyone can offer, I'm desperate ~!
I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'd hate to think that I cannot put new music onto my iPod.
    Thanks~!

    Hello melbernai,
I think your best move would be to the move the entire iTunes library including of all of its file to your external hard drive and running your iTunes from there. You can even have it so that all newly imported music is saved to the external drive as well.
For more help on how to do this, I would check out this article on how to move and run your iTunes library from an external hard drive.

  • I downloaded Lion on my iMac.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  Nothing shows up from before.  It looks like a brand new computer.  It is backed up on Time machine.  Any idea of why this happened and suggestions on restoring?  Thanks.

I downloaded Lion on my 4 yr old iMac.  The download stalled at the last minute so I clicked "CANCEL".  When it was restarted, Lion was there, with no apparent option but to go ahead and install so I assumed it was okay.  Didn't transfer data from "another computer" when prompted - assumed it would transfer from that computer.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  It looks like a brand new computer.  None of my apps, programs,  files, or thousands of photos.   It is backed up on Time machine, but it's a sickening sight.  Any idea why this happened and suggestions before restoring?  Thanks.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • I seem to have deleted my iphoto while cleaning out my hard drive, can i recover it with the pictures it had on it?

while clearing out my hard drive on my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 i managed to delete my iphoto is it possible for me to relocate it? along with the photos it had on it?

If your Mac came with iPhoto preinstalled, before the AppStore was introduces, iPhoto should be on the system install DVDs that came with with your Mac. Look for the DVD with the bundled additional applications.
If you deleted your iPhoto library, restore it from your backup - you need to restore "iPhoto Library", which is located in your Pictures folder by default.
How long ago did this happen? If it was only recently, data recovery software could be used to restore jpeg images, but this kind of software is not available for free,

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Can static electricity from a carrying case "blow out" a hard drive?

Can static electricity from a carrying case "blow out" a hard drive?
My one-month old MacBook Pro's hard drive died today. The Apple store employee said a number of things could cause it (like dropping it), but I have taken good care of it (never dropped it). The only thing I can think of is that when I take it out of the sleeve I have for it, sometimes I get a static electricity shock. Could this have blown the hard drive? If so, where can I get a nonstatic electricity case? (I got a new computer today.) Thanks!

It's quite unlikely that static electricity would affect the HDD. You may just have had a defective drive or there was some other event that damaged the drive such as leaving the computer running while in your carrying case or doing an abnormal shutdown or an electrical surge when it was connected to the AC adaptor, for example.
