Login Window Issue
Ok, this is hardly an earthshaking problem, but it is a bit annoying.
I can't get my login window to show my selected picture and empty password tab, only an empty tab for user name and one for password.
In System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options, I've tried selecting "List of users" and also "Name and Password", but my login window remains as stated.
Any ideas/suggestions?
This is probably too late for the OP, but hopefully someone else will find it helpful.
The problem is ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist.
If you're using mobile home folders, don't sync it. If you're not, script it to kill it off at login.
This what worked for me.

NIS authentication from login window issues?
Hi,
I've a bunch of new iMacs that arrived this week, and I'm trying to get them integrated into our existing network, using NFS mounted /home and NIS for authentication, but I'm have some issues ...
NFS mounting: no problem, this works just fine, and is mounted on boot
NIS: this is where I start having issues, ypwhich shows the correct server, ypcat passwd can get the passwd from remotely and shows everything, and I can login using ssh or even sudo to an NIS user without any issues, HOWEVER, I can't login from the login window, I just get the window doing its little shake showing an authentication failure, and nothing seems to show up in the log files to indicate what the problem may be.
Anyone got any further ideas as to what to check? I have a number of older macs that are able to do this fine, just the newly arrived ones are having these problemsDid you tell the system to authenticate against NIS?
Just because you're bound to a directory server, that doesn't mean you'll automatically use that server for logins.
Check Directory Access -> Authentication and make sure your NIS configuration is listed in the directories used for authentication.
The order of entries here is important, too. They're following in a top-down fashion until the first match is found. This means that if you have a user 'joe' in the local domain, an Open Directory server and in NIS and you're checking in that order, it will authenticate the user against the local account and the Open Directory account before it checks NIS, and if the username is found in one of those two options it won't query the NIS server at all. -
In my System Preferences -> Users & Groups, I have Name and password selected, but when I get to the Login window, it's showing the List of users, including Guest User, which is disabled. Moreover, I have several other users accounts on this computer, but it's only listing mine (and Guest User). If I go into Users & Groups, and make any changes in Login Options, none of them take affect. For instance, clicking Show the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons or Show Input menu in login window, these options don't show up on the Login window. I've run Disk Utilities, which is about the only thing that I can think of to do. Because I have a Firmware password set, I can't do a P-ROM reset.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to resolve the weird Login Window issues? We cable internet users had similar problems in our neighborhood a while back. Sometimes the delay was there but more often than not, computers started OK. The system overview showed nothing wrong to the support types but one neighbor persisted and the techs found what they described as "confusing" reports on our node (takes in about four city blocks).
They came out and worked on the node wiring and things returned to normal.
The point is, sometimes the cable company doesn't know they have a local node problem until enough people rub their noses in it. -
HI,
I have toff situation where we deployed bi dashboards in our site and it works some time and some times not,
and some times it keep loading and throw a login window.
works when
we restart performance point service and if not work
we re create secure store service and generated new key and create new pps service application
before that we stopped secure store and pps service using c.a in application server
we are using ssas for datasource to connect from dashboard designer
we have seperate server for ssas dbs
seperate application server running: pps service and secure store service
two web front ends: one of running secure store
1 Domain controller + central admin service running
some times after 4 -5 hours bi dashboards works , we dashboards not display data and throw un expected errors,
also when we try to connect using a dashboard designer from a seperate client machine in same domain ,we have same issue , we unable to connect to ssas datasource server, and if connect some times unable to deploy dashboards.
we tried every thin icreased server time out values in ssas server

ARD 2.2 admin issues when client is at Login Window
I've used ARD for a long time now. Currently running ARD 2.2 Admin on Tiger 10.4.2 on iBook G3 800 MHz. I've always been able to see the clients listed as available, even if client is at the Login Window, even after a restart.
Issue is w/ one particular client running ARD 2.2 client on Tiger 10.4.2 on a iMac 2 GHz G5.
Issue is, when the client's G5 is rebooted, I cant access it when it's at the Login Window. It doesn't even show as available. Once he logs in, his iMac shows as available, and I can access it. If he the logs out, I do see the iMac as available at the Login Window and can access it.
However, issue also is reflected in SSH. I can't SSH to his machine until he logs in as well.
Again, this is only after the system initially starts up after a reboot for example.
Seems to me that networking isn't properly starting up and only after user logs in does it start up.
I know this might not be best posted in ARD discussion, but I figured I'd start here.
Any ideas? Thanx in advance.Small consolation but I'm seeing the exact same behavior. ARD Admin is a PM G5 and it has no trouble at all seeing/controlling a TiBook 400 (Tiger), a Cube (Tiger Server), a Yikes PM (Panther), or a 17" iMac (Panther). There's an iBook G3 (Panther), though, that doesn't appear to support any kind of incoming network connection unless one of the users is logged in.

10.4.8 Client takes long time to get to login window when bound to OD.
I am working on a system in a school. We have a dual processor g5 xserve with 4 gb of ram, the raid card, and 3 500 gb drives.
Fresh install of 10.4.8 with all the updates.
Raid 5 split in 2 volumes, one for server and one for data.
AFP service running.
Local dns running.
Promoted to open directory master.
This is the following test scenario i have.
there is a user called studenttest and he belongs to a group called cccarstarmembers and is in a workgroup called student.
the studenttest users home folder exists in a sharepoint called students that is set up on the data partition.
there is a sharepoint called cccarstar that holds data for some educational software we use. The owner is administrator with rw access, the group is cccarstarmembers with rw access and others have no access.
The student workgroup only has a few changes like dock location just for testing purposes to verify that the work group is working properly.
When i bind a newly built 10.4.8 client with all the updates to the od server it intermittantly takes a long time for the client to get to the login window when it is powered up. Sometimes it will get to the login window in 45 seconds and other times it will take 5 minutes. This is not consistant. if you unbind the client then the computer will behave properly consistantly.
I have tried binding the client to the od master using the fully qualified domain name and the ip address with the same results.
the search path on the server is "dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca" and on the client it auto populates at cn=config,dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca".
I have changed the search path on the client to match the search path on the server with no success as this is what used to work for us on panther setups.
But this school has a panther client i am working on at the same time with the same applications installed and system preference settings and when i bind it to the same od master with the same search path that is displayed on the server it works fine. all users work, all groups and work groups work.
Dns appears to be working. lookup provides the correct forward and reverse lookup info on the server, if i use either the panther or tiger client and use lookup with the servers fully qualified domain name and ip address i get the correct answers back.
I had this problem before where tiger gave me slow to login screen problems but panther wouldnt when bound, and apple told me that it was because i had afp guest access disabled on the server. Enabling it resolved the issue about 6 months ago at another site but this time when building the server i made sure it was on from the start even thoug it is off by default.
Any suggestions, i am pulling my hair out and about 8 working hours from a deadline.I've seen this a lot.
This Knowledge Base article refers to Active Directory but we've seen this fix login delays with OD-only environments too:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303841
Another one of the causes is when you have multiple network mounts and your AFP service has guest access disabled. The loginwindow is trying to authenticate to each share with the username given and it is failing when that user account is not authorised for that share.
Another can be the LDAP timeout value(s). Try adjusting these in the LDAPv3 plug-in.
Also make sure your network ports have portfast/faststart set on the Mac ports. Sometimes because of STP the port isn't initialised fast enough for the OS when it's ready to start LDAP'ing.
Let me know if any of this helps. -
Hello,
Yesterday, I seemed to experience a crash in the login window in OS X. The way the crash showed on screen was when the user accounts appeared on screen, then clicked on my name, typed my password and hit the "return" key. After hitting the "return" key the log in process appeared to start but then the screen turned solid gray and then the log in screen appeared again as if I've never logged in before again promted me to re do the user account log in steps outline above. After a second attempt the computer finally logged in normally. After that happened I wanted to know if that was a one-time issue, so I shut down the computer.
After a minute I then again rebooted my MacBook Pro and again I was left in the log in screen. I again followed the login screen procedures and again the login window crashed after starting the login process with a gray screen and then the login screen showed again as if the computer never logged in. At the second login screen attempt, the computer as in the previous case logged in normally.
To retest I shut down my MacBook Pro and then rebooted it. This time however when the login screen appeared and after selecting my user account and typing my password, the computer this time logged in normally, after this the log in screen behavior has been normal and the computer logs in successfully at the first attempt as expected and the way it has always been on my MacBook Pro.
I went into console to see if it had an entry for my error and Console did in fact created a crash report for each of the instances. The logs correspond to the time of the crashes.
This is the first crash log for the Login Window...

Login "Loop" issue after upgrading to Leopard from Tiger-iBook G4
Hi Guys,
I've the same login "loop" issue as described in *Apple KB article #306965* only on an iBook G4, unfortunately the solution offered in the KB article does not help.
There is one slight variant being that the user desktop appears for a second or two after the blue screen following login before it returns (loops) to the login window. It happens on all (2) user accounts.
The interesting thing is it doesn't occur on either account when booting in 'safe mode'.
Apart from deleting these accounts and saving/transferring the data are there any other ideas, suggestions or solutions?
Regards,
BBDid a clean install, cloned the HD with SuperDuper and then used Mig. Asst. to restore data back to the original HD. All now OK.
A & I was done in the initial upgrade from Tiger.
Cheers,
BB -
I have been experiencing several issues with my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. My MBPR is scheduled to go into the depot. However, I am wondering if anyone may be able to shed light on a few issues as this is the third "official" time my MBPR is going back for service ("one depot" trip; "one authorized" dealer; several in-store visits).
My Bluetooth is stating that the Bluetooth Chipset is Unknown (0). I also have had Bluetooth Preferences mysteriously change on me. In addition, while Bluetooth is off there are two serial modems turning on. I have turned them off, but they continue to pop up.
In addition, when I log in, my MBPR is not remembering me and my login name is not appearing on the slate-gray screen. The name and password are blank and the following message appears in the lower left hand corner. "login window authentication login window Name edit text has keyboard focus." As a side note, I am the only user. The login issue is a recent occurrence as we just totally wiped it again via a Command + R, and I don't believe I have an accessibility setting set to anything that would cause this, but wanted to check.
Should I be concerned here? Has anyone else had issues like this? I don't want to worry if I don't have to. I have had so many issues over the course of nine months. 5-6 wipes. Airport card replaced and I am about to pull my hair out if my MBPR doesn't come back worldly like clock work this time. I just can't send my days trying to get a $2300 product to work for me any longer. No idea what is wrong with it, but it is driving me insane. Cross your fingers for me and any guidance you have or thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you. EMMA few more issues...

I am worried about a keystroke logged or at least, trying to rule it out.

There are a ton of other warnings. Before I go through this again, can someone tell me if this is normal (all of it -- above too); or if these are symptoms is a keystroke logger or hardware issues?
I ask because originally, when my computer went in for diagnostics (more than once), Apple stated the hardware was fine (other than Airport Card -- finally). However, if I've done 5-6 total wipes; created new users; do not have sharing set-up; have not played around in Terminal; and am up-to-date with versions -- and various issues KEEP COMING BACK -- I am left wondering if a keystroke logger would be possible here?!? I thought maybe a faulty logic board, but why would diagnostics be okay, then? Not trying to be hyperbole, just desperate.
Please help me rule keystroke logger out or at least, tell me so I know, so I can take appropriate action. If you think it could be the logic board with symptoms above, that would be a great too.
All I want to do is use the computer as intended, but I can't seem to get a real answer, so after nine months -- I am turning to the communities to see if anyone -- anyone at all -- can help. The last thing I can do is have the MBPR come back from the depot and the same thing occur. Any guidance or advice would be so gratefully appreciated. -
No keyboard at login window after logout
Hello all,
I'm just starting state testing and have been presented with a problem. When a student logs out of a machine in order to log into the testing account the login window won't accept input from the keyboard.
Bacground and details:
We have labs of computers using workgroup manager and open directory for management. In a normal lab the machine will boot to a login window. This is so that the preferences will be refreshed before a student logs in. The student will login as a local user (student) and procede to do whatever for the day.
We have recently started state mandated testing. I have set up an OD account which is very locked down and keeps the student on track while testing. This requires someone to log the normal user out and login as the OD user. This is where the problem arises.
About 50% of the time the keyboard will no longer funtion after logout. No keys of any sort work. The mouse still works. Even keystrokes through ARD do nothing. A end user is then required to reboot the system in order to do ANYTHING. This is not ideal for elementary kids.
From my digging in log files and poking around i noticed that the loginwindow process was hanging or crashing. If i kill the process the login window blinks and then works just fine. I'm sure i could write a logout script that drops a process into the background to kill the loginwindow process after so many seconds, but thats messy. Has anyone seen this? Any thoughts or solution? Only happens on a logout, never on an initial bootup.
I have found that 95% of these issues occur on Mac Mini's. I can consistantly replicate the issue on a mini. If i clone the mini to a macbook, i no longer have the problem (using carbon copy cloner). So either the hardware is part of the issue or the clone fixed something in the process.

In those cases there may be threads and/or processes trying to do things with windows that they don't own. In other words, some programmers may have goofed up a little bit someplace.

Login Window on Wrong Screen in Dual Monitor Setup
I have two monitors attached to my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10. When I boot up with the lid closed, I see the start up sequence (Apple logo and progress bar) shown on the monitor that is my "primary" monitor of the two monitors. But when boot up is complete and the login window appears, it shows on the secondary monitor, not the primary. My primary monitor is connected via Thunderbolt, and the secondary monitor is attached to the HDMI port on my MacBook Pro. Any ideas how to set the login screen to show up on the primary monitor?
I have exactly this same issue on a Late 2012 Hexacore Mac pro (The last real one LOL)
My primary screen (a 24inch VGA 1080p monitor) shows the Apple boot logo (with progress bar) whilst the secondary display (32inch HDMI 1080p LCD TV) is plain white
then when the initial login box appears that comes up on the 2nd display (Even if it is turned off) meaning I have normally have to turn that screen on, log in then turn it off again
I have also noticed that the screen layout is wrong. Once logged in the 32" display is logically located above the 24" one. However for the login dialog they default to side by side. meaning movingthe mouse up to the TV to log in means going left ot right... Not very good really.
Not enough to make me revert to Mavericks from Yosemite, but still quite annoying.

Kernel Panics at Login Window?
Ever since I installed Adobe CS2 a few months ago, I've had increasing numbers of kernal panics just as the machine reaches the login window. I thought it might be hardware related so I unplugged all usb devices except mouse and keyboard and my external Firewire 800 drive and my speakers. I'm still getting the panics, or I'm not getting past the grey screen, fans revving and cycling dial for 5 or more minutes.
I'm running the hardware test disk but it seems to be passing all hardware tests. Can this simply be a bad or corrupt system? I cannot log in now to deauthorize or deactive, so I'm planning to do an archive install and hopefully it won't mess up my CS2 and Macromedia ownerships.
Please respond quickly if you have advice, I'm checking mail often because I'm starting to get desperate. Using my PC for email, which i never do!
Oh, btw, when doing a safe boot, I see comm apple driver IOFirewire Serial bus prtocol has no kernel dependency. and a bunch of types of devices showing no kernel dependency. Would going from 10.4.3 to 10.4.5 install what I'm missing? G5 Dual 2.5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)I bought a G5 Quad a month ago. Right from the start, a constant series of Kernel Panics. Took it back to dealer. They returned it to Apple. Apple sent dealer a replacement. Dealer tested it. 'Blew up' on workbench. Apple sent another. This was sent to me. Now, a week later, Kernel panics continue. Exactly as before. Have followed all the numerous pieces of advice in this forum and on Apple Support, etc, etc, to infinitum. Tomorrow I shall take the machine back to dealer.
Now I am wondering two very simple, very basic questions:
(1) is there something wrong with these machines? There are SO MANY reports of issues like these.
and
(2) Why is it up to the customer to find out the answer to this question, having paid x amount of money? I am amazed at how generous Apple customers are to the company! -
Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard
I bought a new iMac Oct 26. It contained Tiger, and included a disk for installing Leopard. I easily got the machine up and running using Tiger, but last night I attempted to install Leopard. When the installation was complete, I tried to get it running. A screen asking for my password came up. I keyed that in and hit logon. Back came the screen asking for the password. To make long story short, I tried everything I could last night, and then called Apple Support this morning. Took quite a while, but I was back in business this afternoon. The technician who helped me sent me the email copied below describing the solution. Perhaps it will help someone else? Romelle

Mac OS X 10.5, iMac (Late 2007): Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard
Issue or symptom
After installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a 20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer, you may not be able to log in at the login window. Your login name and password are apparently accepted, but after a blue screen appears for a few seconds, the login window reappears instead of your desktop.
Products affected
20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processors
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Solution
If Leopard is installed
Start up from the Leopard Install DVD and perform an Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings).
After the Archive and Install is complete, you should be able to successfully log in. Use Software Update to install any other updates.
Important: Install the iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard after the Archive and Install is complete.
If Leopard is not yet installed
If you have not yet installed Leopard on your 20-inch or 24-inch aluminum iMac computer with a 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processor running Mac OS X 10.4.x, but previously installed the iMac Software Update 1.2, you should install the iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger) or later, before installing Leopard.
Thank you,
AppleIf Leopard came pre-installed and this is a new machne, then the disks that came in the box should let you archive install preserving users & network settings. The disks have a grey label, and if you get more than one use disk #1 for this procedure.
Hold down the "option" (also known as "alt" on the new keyboards) key when starting up with disk #1 in the optical drive. Select the install disk icon on the grey screen and click the arrow. Then when you get to the "select destination pane, click the options button after selecting your hard drive as the destination. In options A& I preserving should be checked by default, if not, select them. Click "ok" to dismiss the options pane, then run the installation.
If this does not work for you, call apple support. They want everything to work. Be patient, they are real busy these days.

Hi. Occasionally (but happening more and more often), when I boot my computer and it goes to the login window, when I click on my username, suddenly the screen corrupts a bit around the username and while I can move my mouse, nothing is clickable anymore. The corrupt pattern always differs, and the only way to fix it for me is to force turn off the computer. When I reboot it, it works normally, and I can type my password to login. However today, I received the problem, and when I rebooted it, the problem happened again. I didn't want to shut it down this time to look for another solution so I just shut the lid, put the computer to sleep, and reopened it to see if the problem was fixed, but to no avail, the glitches (mostly random patches of black and white dispersed with small sprinkled pixels of varying colors) this time filled the entire screen.
I think it may relate to the GPU, and in the case of the GPU, I can recall an event where I was using Final Cut to export something while I was also exporting something in Premiere, and suddenly the computer just stopped moving, and closing the lid didn't stop the harddisk or stop the fans (probably overtaxed with heat). After that, I've been noticing this happening.
My temporary solution with this issue is to change the graphics card I am using.
My MacBook Pro has the "better battery life" and "better performance" option, in which the 9400M is for "better" and the 9600M GT (or whatever) is for "performance", and requires me to log out and sign back in for any changes. For a while now, I have been using the "better performance" option since I started using final cut more often. Since it requires me to log out and sign back in in order to change, I feel that the 9600M GT which I might have possibly damaged could have something to do with it, since it seems that when I click on my username, the internal preference files change the graphics preference to "better performance", and that change may cause the glitches.
Did I toast my 9600? How should I resolve this issue? I feel if I turn this computer on again it will never go back to it's normal mode.
edit: read other topics, in case anyone brings up a heat theory: No I do not see any association with heat. I have had the glitch occur when I turn the computer on in the cold or when I turn it on a couple minutes after I turn it off, in which the board is still warmYou have the MacBook pro 5,1 2008?
Have you installed this firmware update, which brings you up to MBP51.007E.B06 (EFI 2.8)
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.8
Download
This update is recommended for MacBook Pro (15-inch, late 2008) models. The update resolves a graphics issue that may cause the internal display to flicker. -
Database login windows when using DataSet ( CR2008 )
After executing this code, I get a database login window when using a DataSet, wondering why I am asked for user/pwd when using DataSets.
Thanks Jonathan for the tip. I tried it before and after the setDatabaseLogin call yesterday, but got the same results. I'm still going to follow your suggestion because that makes more sense.
Turns out it was the configuration of my ODBC/System DSN that was causing the problem. I reconfigured the System DSN by clearing the check box to provide username/password and now I don't get the Database Login anymore.
I found a different blog post that answered the OLE DB issue I was seeing where the DatabaseName was coming up blank:
Login Error Database at Runtime
Haven't tried it yet and probably won't because I got the Viewer to work with ODBC the way I like it.
Thanks for the help!
