Loginwindow drops to console Darwin login (no Gui)

Hi,
I just realized I underestimated my MacBook pro Intel... My os is 10.4.8 and not 10.3.9... due to this I am reposting in the appropriate forum... (even if it seems to me that this sort of problems occurred also with previous versions of OsX)
Hi all,
I am new to the apple forum (and new to mac Os... I usually work in a gentoo linux environment). And, since having updated system software, My mac book pro drops to the nongraphical system console right after I enter the password in the graphical login window.
With some googling I have seen that quite a few mac users are having the same problem... so I tried ALL the solutions suggested (like rebuilding the netinfo database, repairing permissions with diskutils etc etc...)
The last lines of my system.log are, as all others with my same problem, roughly like this:
Oct 4 05:49:02 soyu crashdump151: SecurityAgent crashed
Oct 4 05:49:03 soyu loginwindow95: AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username (<LoginAuthRefMgr: 0x3385b0>).\n
(I think this is the relevant part.... does not seem to me that the crashdump log add any relevant info)
ALL others with the same problem seem to have reverted to an Archive and Install... Might be my Linux way of thinking, but:
I am sure that there must be a possibility to solve this problem without having to reinstall all config data (the reinstall to fix philosophy is one of the things that turned me away from Windows a lot of time ago)
(I have also bootcamp installed with WinXP + parallels with linux and winXP, plus fink with a whole lot of unix dev tools.... It would take me to much time)
Does anyone have any suggestion ?
I also have another problem:
I am trying to connect remotely to my "console only" mac, but the net is down... (I switched off AirPort just before the software update... after the update process finished asking me to reboot, I got the BSD login screen as said above)
So, reading the "command line OsX guide" I am trying to reenable AirPort and connect to my home network (so I can try doing something from my other PC, the one I'm using now).
the commands I issued are the following (I have to manually write them, since I have no network)
prompt > sudo ./networksetup-panther -setairportpower on
You cannot set AirPort power because all AirPort network services are disabled.
ok... so I have to enable services....
prompt > sudo ./networksetup-panther -setnetworkserviceenabled AirPort on
prompt > sudo ./networksetup-panther -getnetworkserviceenabled Airport
Enabled
prompt > sudo ./networksetup-panther -setairportpower on
You cannot set AirPort power because all AirPort network services are disabled.
... uhhh !? (maybe I am missing something ?)
by the way, I found yesterday a file (that I can't find anymore now) telling me that among the updates were also AirPort sw and Firmware... (do not know if this helps...)
I have also tried creating a new user using dscl... once I am in interactive mode I can cd to NetInfo, but, as soon as I type cd Users the graphical GUI tries to start and, after one or two minutes drops me back to the console.

*…I am sure that there must be a possibility to solve this problem without having to reinstall all config data…*
The A&I install option allows you to preserve user and network settings.

  • Darwin Login screen on boot. What to do?

After updating a PowerMac G4/867 QuickSilver to Mac OS X 10.4.7, the machine restarted once just fine, then restarted and dropped me in a Darwin Login screen.
The user typed in his name and password. I typed "exit" to kick out of Darwin and try to continue booting. It seemed to work for a while, then came back to the Darwin login screen.
Is there some trick to get out of this, or an Apple Support article on the topic? My searches haven't turned up anything useful.

    Hi, Lithmac.
    1. If you are seeing"To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return"see: "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" Message.
    2. If you seeing a Darwin login prompt such as the following:Darwin/BSD (your_name-computer) (Console)
login:the following steps may sort this out:
    (1) Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
    (2) Type the following, exactly as written:
    mount -uw /
and press Return. Note there is a single space after mount and after -uw
    (3) Type the following, exactly as written:
    mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist preferences2.old
and press Return. Note there is a single space after mv and after .plist This is one, long command.
    (4) Type the following, exactly as written:
    reboot
    then press Return.
Note that these instructions are based on information from the following two sources:
    a. Step 5 of the section "You see an empty, blue screen..." in "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X."
    b. This hint on Mac OS X Hints.
    Good luck!

  • X won't let me drop to console

I've got X setup along with KDE and KDM, but X isn't letting me drop to console by the use of ctrl-alt-f1-4. It just goes to a black screen and I can't even get it to go back to KDE after doing this. If any config files would help diagnosing the problem please let me know.

On the KDM screen, you will see a drop down menu that will allow you to select a number of options.
You can choose one of your WM or desktops or you can choose to go back to a console login screen instead.
That should solve your dilemma.  otherwise you want to Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and initiate 'init 3' to get to a login and when you want to go back to kdm just go back to init 5

  • Attendant Console will not load GUI

I'm running into a problem with Attendant Console version 6.1.2_c wherein when I launch the program and provide my credentials, the GUI disappears but acclient.exe can be seen running in Task Manager and using 50% CPU.  If I login as a different user, I can get into Attendant Console fully without issues.  Normally I would suggest that the user simple recreate their profile however in this case, it would be painful to lose the profile.  Has anybody come across this issue and, if so, is there a way to correct this issue without losing the profile.  NOTE, I have tried all of the obvious things like uninstalling and reinstalling the application and I've compared the working profile to the one that doesn't work and nothing has panned out.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks guys, worked. My issue was that after using the help feature "?" after utils service restart "?", it just said serv. There wasn't a list of options. But obviously just doing Cisco Tomcat I was good. Thanks again.

  • Console mode, login not possible

    Hi all,
I'm using OS X Yosemite and want to login as ">console" to open a terminal based access to my Mac.
The console login appears a few seconds and afterwards in turns in a black screen only showing the mouse pointer. It is not possible to enter my username ans password when the login line appears. Therefore, it is not possible for me to login into the system. I have to do a hard reboot.
Is there a possibility to fix this problem? I just want to login without the GUI.
    Thanks,
    markus

Once you are in the web browser:
You can log in by using:
-Portal URL.System will ask you email as ID
-URL that directs you to ITS( is an URL that contains the string BBPSTART).System will ask you your user ID, PW and  client.
My point is to check if ITS is working and portal not.
    Thanks and Regards,

Go ahead and patch the server to SLES11Sp3 and OES11SP2 (via CLI and
using yast wagon). I've seen the same recently, and after updating it it
    went away.

  • OIM Design Console Invalid Login tcLoginException

    Dear All,
While trying to login to OIM Design console using design console or using the API the following error is displayed:
    Error Keyword: DAE.LOGON_DENIED
    Description: Invalid Login.
    Remedy: Contact your system administrator.
    Action: E
    Severity: H
    Help URL:
    Detail:
    com.thortech.xl.security.tcLoginException: com.thortech.xl.crypto.tcCryptoException: KeyStore File :..\xlclient\config\xl.keystore missing.
I believe the password has been changed but unable to login.
My question is how do we reset this password.
    Regards,
    Simon

Do you know password of any other user? If yes, then login into database,
execute query "select usr_password from usr where usr_login='user whose password u know'". This will return encrypted value of password. Copy it and execute query:
"update usr set usr_password='Copied password from above query' where upper(usr_login)= upper('xelsysadm');".
In this way you can set password of Xelsysadm to a known value. Now, you can login into system and change the password of System admin.
    I hope this helps.

    GP

  • Console (Darwin) problem

When I turn the computer on OS X starts to boot up then the screen goes grey and Darwin (console) pops up and prompts me to log in. I've restart the computer a few times but the same thing happens. Any ideas?

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If this doesn't help, post back; I have more!

  • After automatic software update- being prompted for Darwin login - HELP!

I'm now locked out of the Powerbook G4. Purchased this system back in 2004 - haven't even used it since then as we didn't know how to hook it up to the internet. Recently powered it up and got it hooked into the network (although wireless not working). Noticed that all software and virus stuff was way, way out of date - so did that automatic software update. Once everything was downloaded - it asked to reboot the system. When system reboot, it's now sitting at the Darwin/BSD prompt - asking for a login: - when I try the login that we setup for the computer, it just spits back incorrect login. Tried Administator as well - no LUCK!
    Any suggestions??

  • Using JNLP/Web Start to deploy console only applications (no gui)

I have scanned the forums but have not found a good answer to this... I am looking to leverage the JNLP technology to help manage the deployment of server-based applications on thousands of servers.
These servers do not have a Console (they are linux) - no X Windows, nothing. The Java program that I wish to deploy is basically a background server process.
This program that I am deploying to thousands of locations has many Jar dependencies. It would be really great to use JNLP to deploy this app. So that on each server I could simply run "javaws http://someurl/app.jnlp" to execute the program. Unfortunately, I have found that the Java Web Start client requires a GUI - so that it can display download progress and the etc. The -Xnosplash and -silent options do not work for this.
Otherwise, I have to manage and deploy all of my Jars on each my thousands of servers - what a pain!
I have looked at NetX and OpenJNLP but these projects seem dead and out-dated.
    Any ideas?

At this time all javaws applications are swing applications needing swing for the download dialog, error dialogs, and any security dialogs.
There are RFEs filed to add support for non-gui apps, that may be implementated in JDK7

  • G3 X4 startup blue screen responsive arrow Darwin login prompt

I tried booting in 'safe mode,' but the screen goes black and the machine turns completely off. The trouble shooting page on apple.com only gives instructions for 3.9 or earlier.
Where are the instructions for X.4 when 'safe mode' won't work?
Starting up normal led to a 10 minute frozen blue screen (with responsive arrow) that ended with a 'Darwin/BSD' prompt for a login. What's up with that?
Thank you very much if you have any sage advice!
(this particular machine is a G4 with OSX 4.? [the latest OS])

    Hi, knowmoore.
You wrote: "I tried booting in 'safe mode,' but the screen goes black and the machine turns completely off."That usually indicates that your startup disk is severely corrupted. See: "Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot."
I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
