Loginwindow not responding – a solution

A user on our network could not log out of his account. In the activity monitor, the loginwindow process appeared red and was marked "Not responding".
Manually quitting loginwindow enabled him to log out immediately but the problem recurred when he logged back in.
We tried quite a few things so I'm not sure which step was the most important but the issue has now disappeared.
Steps taken:
- Repaired permissions
- Trashed loginwindow preferences file (com.apple.loginwindow.plist)
- Removed all items from Login Items (In the Accounts preference pane)
- Trashed all the LaunchServices files in /Library/Caches
- Rebooted from the command line with "sudo reboot now"

thanks. tried that. it asks me to re-login after reboot as expected. problem persists once full restart is complete. i don't think it's plist corruption.
i also reapplied the 10.5.2 combo upgrade but no help
i'm also seeing severe network performance degradation. use the macmini to serve video files across gigE network and very erratic behavior. no new software/mod installed (very bare bones machine), only noticed these problems after 10.5.2 upgrade.

  • Loginwindow (Not Responding) after iTunes & Quicktime update

    In order to activate my new iPhone this morning I needed to upgrade to iTunes 7.5 and the corresponding Quicktime update. After a reboot and logging in I was presented with the desktop, the dock and a spinning beachball . . . which still hadn't gone away after 10 minutes.
    After a while I tried a few things and noticed that the dock was working, until I ctrl clicked on the finder icon that is. After that the dock froze and I rebooted with a long power button press. After logging again I had the same problem, desktop, working dock and spinning beachball.
    This time I hit one of my dock stacks and launched the Activity Monitor, only to discover that a process called 'loginwindow' was Not Responding. On force quitting this everything went away and I was back to the login prompt. I logged in again and found the same thing - I can use all the applications I can get to through the dock but have no finder . . .
    Any ideas?? HELP!!

  • 10.4.9 loginwindow not responding in red freezes starting

    Hi,
    After updating with 10.4.9 the macbookpro freezes about 5 minutes on starting. In the processes ..the loginwindows appears in red with (Not responding) text beside..Is there anything it can be done to solve this?..can we uninstall this 10.4.9 update and return to 10.4.8?

  • MX 920 Printer Not Responding - One Solution That Worked For Me

    I phoned Canon customer support and they walked me through fixing my problem.  We use wireless LAN at the house.
    Background:
    I have a mac, my wife an iPad.  We would be able to print a document, then after aprx 10 minutes I'd have to enter our router password again.  Our home office was not so printer friendly.  Our printer was located in an adjacent room aprx 25ft away.
    Solution to OUR Problem:
    Well, I finally phoned Canon Customer service and she ran me through a function test that printed out a report to check the signal strength from our router to the printer.  Well, our signal strength was at 84%.  
    Here is the process they walked me through in order to see my signal strength and confirm my settings.
    Click "Menu" , then click "Set Up" (the tool icon), then click "Device Settings", then click "LAN Settings", then click "Confirm LAN settings", then click "Print LAN settings"...then click "Yes" to Print Network Configuration Page
    On that page verify:
    1. that you have a IPv6 IP Address & Default Gateway (dont ask me how or what that all means...she just advised me that I should make sure that there is one in there...if there was not one in there then there was something wrong with my router or my actual connection/password)..
    2. Signal Strength
    She advised that it should be as close to 100% as possible..  Again, ours was at 84% and she said, "yup, thats your problem"..
    Solution Day 5
    The printer has been working flawlessly.  I can print something out in the morning, go to the gym, come back an couple of hours later and I can print again...Before, I would have to re enter our router LAN password.

    Under 'Disks' File Sharing is enabled with a disk password (as opposed to accounts or base station passwords). Guest Access is not allowed. The rest are the defaults.
    Now I've been having interesting problems with USB external drives mounting on my iMac. One never did (but was always successful with FireWire) and a second one was inconsistent. The drive that I have attached to the AEBS at the moment is one that I finally made fully functional with my desktop so I don't know if that is related. I'm going to have to run a number of additional tests.
    Note: my wireless is pure .n - not a mixed environment. I also had a speed issues with the iMac (wired ethernet) until I changed it from manual (100BaseT, full duplex for use with my old Belkin) to Automatic and re-enabled IPv6 which is enabled on the AEBS.

  • "Firefox is already running but not responding" - have tried all the usual solutions.

    The message I'm getting is the standard: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding." I'm using a PC with Windows 7.
    I've tried:
    - Opening task manager and manually ending the process. This didn't work because the process is not listed in applications, processes, or services.
    - Deleting the parent/lock file. This didn't work because the file is not in any of the firefox folders. I've checked APPDATA/Local/Firefox as well as APPDATA/Roaming/Firefox, and the original install folder just to be thorough. It's not a hidden file either - I have those set to display.
    - Creating a new profile and importing settings from the old one. I can't import settings because the old profile is still running.
    - Restarting before and after each of these potential solutions, including restarting in safe mode, shutting off the computer and waiting a bit before restarting, etc.
    All I really want back are my bookmarks, which I've spent quite a while creating. Unfortunately, there is no file I can find for the default profile that has the bookmarks stored. When I created a new profile, a folder appeared with its name in the APPDATA/Roaming/Firefox folder, with all of the bookmarks, etc. There is no such folder for the default profile though - which is the one I want. I've even tried switching to Chrome and importing bookmarks, but that doesn't work because the bookmarks can't be imported while Firefox is still running.

    If there is no profile present then you also get that error about "Firefox is already running but not responding"
    If you uninstalled Firefox at any time in the past and removed your personal data or deleted that profile folder yourself then you no longer have a profile to start with or restore files from.

    After doing a Google search for web sites, the reultant links will not open, a 'Firefox not responding' shows in the URL bar.

    I had the same problem and my solution was to disable the PDF extension that came with Firefox 4 which belongs to another company. I found out that it wast interfering with ReaderX. I unabled it and restarted Firefox. I have had no problems since then. Go to Tools, Add-On and click on Extensions and disable the PDF extension. I hope this helps

  • Touchpad touchscreen problems (erratic behavior/not responding correctly/etc) temporary solution.

    I bought a HP Touchpad about a month or two after it came out. It worked pretty much as you'd expect it to until some time ago. I started getting a problem where the screen would go crazy and not respond correctly to my touch inputs. Web pages would jump all over the place, cards would zoom out, etc, in other words, they would behave erratically. After some testing I noticed that certain areas  of the touchscreen would NOT respond at all to inputs while others would make the screen go crazy like I mentioned previously. I looked for information on the web to see if other people where having the same problem and found reports of the same behavior. Unfortunately there where no solutions offered. At that point I tried turning on and off the Touchpad which did not resolve the problem. My next step was to try to reinstall the OS with WebOS Doctor, but I read a post where the user reported similar behavior and reinstalling with WebOS Doctor didn't fix the problem. Needless to say I was bummed out since I figured it was a hardware problem with the touchscreen. After more testing I found a temporary solution to the problem which seems to suggest that the probem could be software. The solution when you get the problem is to hold down the power button and the home button at the same time and keep them pressed until the screen shuts down and the touchpad restarts. Once the OS comes back up it works like it is supposed to until you get the next episode of screen epilepsy. At that point you need to do the procedure again and it will fix the problem temporarily. Usually the fix lasts for a few days in my case. The fix also solves other problems I have with the touchpad. Problems like, videos not playing fluidly or freezing every few seconds although the sound plays fine (youtube), sound gets messed up (sounds are played in a robot like pitch), and others.     Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

    I think the YouTube and sound problems are separate from the other erratic behaviour.  Recently my touchpad won't play YouTube videos beyond certain points, starting a few seconds in possibly due to the advertising pop-ups - I can skip forwards, but that means I miss crucial parts.  My sound also goes 'robot-like' until a reboot, which is incredibly annoying!  Your touchscreen problems may be specific to your device - try going to Device Info / Diagnostics and see if that tells you anything.

    If you had never saved the file at any time, you have lost your work.
    Go to;  Apple Menu > Force Quit
    Start a new presentation, and from now on, after adding the first object to the slide, save the file.

    Do a
    Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data

The worst part is am able to check my mails, able to chat and so on... only thing not able to browse through the browser.  I have tried restore option also.  This is happening with both Wlan and Data con. too

    I do not really know much about this kind of problem, but i may be your internet connection.
    If you are on your own #G network then:
    Go to Settings > then enable "Airplane Mode". Count to 10 and then disable it.
    Then wait patiently until you get a good connection and then try again.
    If you are on a nearby Wi-Fi connection then:
    Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > then disable then enable after counting to 10. Make sure that you are connected and then try again.
    If all else fails, then you need to contact your provider for assistance.

  • CS5 Premiere was working perfectly until last night... Now not responding. Any solutions?

    Hey all,
    So, for the past month I've had no problems editing with premiere. Then last night while editing on a much smaller project than normal, (same file types) the program started slowing down, considerably. Now, any keystroke puts the program into "not responding" and it takes minutes to select clips. I've restarted the computer, program, and looked at my cpu usage in the task manager. While the program is running, and then not responding, the computer is not stressing at all, 14% cpu, 31% memory. 
    Im running an i7 [email protected], 8gb ram, with ati hd 5770.
    What i dont understand is why I've had no issues until last night, and now I cant use the product at all. My After Effects still works fine at least.
    Any one else have this issue or know of a fix?

    Along with TClark's questions, try doing a New Project, and test it out.
    There have been reports of Project files bloating, and then not working properly. Adobe is working on that. Seems that many/most/all of those came with CS4 Projects converting to CS5. Was there any CS4 to CS5 conversion anywhere in this workflow?

  • Receiving printer not responding on computer screen. Unplugged, reinstalled wi-fi printer...nothing.

    Cannot get printer to respond. One computer will print, the other gets printer not responding message.
    We have reinstalled the printer, unplugged everything to no avail. Anybody have a solution?

  • PRINTER NOT RESPONDING TO COMPUTER COMMAND

    I had just printed a color photo sent to me via e-mail. A few minutes later, I attempted to print a Word document and nothing happened. The printer did not respond at all.

    Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system? How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth? Are there any error messages on the printer or computer screen?
    If you are using Windows the diagnostics at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue.
