Logout has timed out, can't restart, program won't force quit

I have had a recurring problem with this, various programs will freeze but I can't force quit them, I also can't restart or shutdown due to the program that won't quit.
Overall my G5 (late 2005) is turning into a massive pile of S%#t
any help would be mucho appreciated!
Thanks

I'm having similar problems - various times, and there is no pattern, I get the spinning beachball, which never loads what it's supposed to. I cannot force quit, I can move my cursor, and can sometimes switch to a different application while that beachball is spinning on the other app. I've done Disk Repair several times and been told that "no repairs were necessary." This is the FIRST time I"ve ever ever had problems with this computer since I've owned it - in 7 or 8 years. Any ideas?

  • Logout has timed out because the app (program name) failed to quit

    Hi,
I've been having an odd problem with my Mac since I did the last software upgrade.
I upgraded to 10.5.8 and this problem has been occurring sporadically ever since.
Basically, 7 times out of 10, when I try and shut the computer down, I get the following message: "Logout has timed out because the app (program name) failed to quit."
The program apparently causing the problem varies - sometimes it's Photoshop, sometimes iTunes, OpenOffice, etc. Today it failed because Software Update (which I'd just run, in order to install the latest update) failed to quit!
The only way I can get the computer to shut down in this case is to press and hold the power button.
My Mac is a 20 inch 2.66 GHz with 2GB of RAM, and is about 18 months old. Up until the last upgrade I had no problems with it.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to fix it?

    HI,
    Open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilites)
Click the pop up menu and select: My Processes
You can Force Quit any of the apps you mentioned from that window befoe you shut down.

  • Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit.

Hello world... (Mac world that is)
The message says more "Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try again, quit Mail and choose Log Out from the Apple menu."
I tried everything. Still does not let me shut down.
Other programs will not shut down at this time, including Finder. I also know that the Time Machine icon has been spinning for over an hour. So I imagine we are in a loop of sorts.
Unfortunately, I have had similar troubles before that I did not record. So I figure I start now and see if somebody out there can help me.
    Peace!
    Chopo

I'm having the same problem (can't logout, shut down or restart), but the referenced solution doesn't seem to apply. I do not get a "Cannot connect to server" message, I just get a "Logout has timed out" message. It seemed to happen after an automatic software update that was supposed to involve a restart, but it hasn't been able to restart since.
Can you please clarify, what is meant by "delete the AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary, which is located under the root node" (with reference to file loginwindow.plist)?
This is what the loginwindow.plist file looks like now:
    bplist00Ñ!AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary¢ÒTPathTHide-/Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HPEventHandler.app/Ò _N/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/Software Update/HP Scheduler.app//27
I was at the genius bar earlier, and they said I need to 'archive and install' in order to 'reset the OS'... but there's got to be a better answer than that, no? Perhaps this plist thing? I'm surprised that even powering off the imac doesn't reset anything... it just comes back the way it was. I'm supposed to bring the 25 inch imac in to the mac store for surgery (archive and install), but seeing several similar cases on this discussion forum, without archive and install identified as the clear solution, I'm in search of a second opinion... or any suggestion for how to simply make this work the way it was before? Is it 10.5.4 that is causing this? Should I go back to 10.5.3?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

  • Logout has timed out because the app MirrorAgent failed to quit

I get this error message at logout.
"Logout has timed out because the application MirrorAgent failed to quit. To try again, quite MirrorAgent and choose Log Out from the Apple menu"
    Has anyone experienced this?

I am a long-time computer geek and former Mac developer. I am clear that several problems still exist with the syncronization of my computer with .Mac. MirrorAgent, in particular, seems to grab the computer at the root level and get fouled up such that it drags down performance and will not complete its task (whatever that might be). Since the problem is somewhat subtle and leaves few clues as to what is going on (e.g. no action on the sync progress icon in the menu bar), many users are left with nothing to do but reboot.
Since most users don't know how to discover which task is screwing them, Apple gets few reports about MirrorAgent. I hope that Apple will awaken to the poor job of sync'ing that they have implemented and fix the system. I have seen amazing errors in months past and I keep hoping that somebody at Apple is awake to the problems.

  • I have just downloaded firefox onto my laptop but it wont open. I keep getting a message that says: 'The connection has timed out' Can you help

This is the message i get after a few seconds of trying to connect:
    The connection has timed out.
The server at search.bearshare.com is taking too long to respond.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Is this when you install the EXE, or when you are running Firefox, or some other time?

  • Logout has timed out

I can't seem to get my macbook pro to shut down, one or another Mac application, Mail, Safari, iCal (pick one) won't shut down and I get the Logout error, forcing me to force quit at least one application. Huge pain to shut down each day.

Do you have an idisk enabled? If so it is busy synchronizing with .Mac and causes logout to timeout.

  • Firefox has turned into a blackhole and is COMPLETELY unresponsive. I can't restart my computer and force quit doesn't do anything. Please Help

No article or FAQ on this website is even moderately relevant to this seemingly unsolvable problem.

All the articles pose solutions that require you to perform an action within Firefox; which isn't very helpful, given that my Firefox window is a black rectangle with a white box in the middle.
It might also be helpful to know that this "blackhole" occurred when I was about to view a YouTube video..
    Any other suggestions?

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • I can't search anything- mapquest etc error message is always search has( timed out) how do I fix this?t

error message reads as follows: The connection has timed out.
. The site could be temporanily unavailable or too busy
. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection
. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy , make sure that firefox is permitted to access Web.
I have done all these- still have no access to search

Well, shucks, i just spent almost 30 minutes trying to find your model user guide to explain it better, I guess they never got around to making it.....
I would just borrow another Windows disk and try installing it again and if it does it again then you might take it to an Apple Store and see if one of the "Genius' " can figure it out.
Make sure your internet is enabled and click on your blank desktop and at the top of your screen is a Help menu option, enter PRAM and it should give you a list of things relating to Pram. It may take a few seconds to list anything as it has to connect to Apples severs first. It should list the things you may have to fill back in when your done.
"P-ram" stores some common information that is used in the background, your date, time, startup disk, etc, that you don't have to re-fill when you restart, it's a little different for each computer.

I can not dowload the new updated software for my Ipod touch 4G. When i do I get an error message that says Network connection has timed out. I have done the trouble shooting steps. Downloaded the latest version of Itunes, and checked network connection

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves the timeout error.
