Logout Hook to kill Window Server

Hi there,
I have a problem with my users hanging at logout, the computer just freezes still displaying the desktop picture and doesn't make it to the login window.
I've tried to track down the cause to no avail. I can still ssh into the machine that's frozen and force a reboot remotely, kill the Window Server or do a hard reset.
None of these are ideal so I'd thought perhaps a logout script to kill the Window Server!?
Trouble is I don't seem to be having much luck trying to implement it. I can find lots of stuff about logout hooks in Tiger but not much in Leopard. I know you're supposed to be able to set them through Workgroup Manager but despite making my scripts executable, I can't get workgroup manager to see them as selectable when I try to add one.
I'm also confused about setting the appropriate login window preferences in ~root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!

I looked through the report compiled and I found that APE (Application Enhancer) was still being called even though it doesn't exist along with OSS3D which wasn't working either. I got rid of both of those using their provided installers and it appears to work. WindowServer didn't crash which usually triggers the abnorminally high cpu usage.

  • Installation problem on windows server 2008 r2 datacenter edition 64bit

    hi
today, i tried to install the current maxdb 7.8 release on my virtual server with a windows server 2008 r2 datacenter 64bit edition os. at the first installation, i got an error message something with "rte runtime error". at this point, the installation stopped.
because of this error, i tried to uninstall the failed installation. this was not possible, in the uninstaller, i didn't see any components, so i can't uninstall.
so i tried to delete the files manually: the entries in the start menu, and the application's path under "program files"... first, i need to kill a process named "serv.exe", that creates a tcp daemon under port 7200... after killing it, the deletion of the dir in program files was successful.
this is very very weird, now my server is "contaminated" with an uncomplete uninstallation of maxdb...
why maxdb 7.8 has problems on windows server 2008 r2 datacenter 64bit edition???
    thanks for feedbacks!
    regards, jan

    > no, because i canceled this virtual server - another method to solve this problem. (i have really no time for things like that..!)
If you take the time to give exact error messages then someone will be certainly able to help
    > on windows server 2003, there are NO problems.
Windows 2003 != Windows 2008 - they use a different kernel, a different security system (UAC) and other features that may prevent a succesfull installation in the first place.
I installed a MaxDB 7.8 just today on Windows 2008 R2 and it worked fine.

  • Opening Excel Workbook Fails when run from Scheduled Task on Windows Server 2008 Rw

    Hi,
I have a little vbs script that instantiates the Excel.Application object and then opens a work book to perform some tasks on it. The script runs fine when run from the command line. When I attempt to run it as a scheduled task (it is supposed to update
data that is pulled from a SQL Server at regular intervals), it fails with the following error:
Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'c:\test\SampleWorkbook.xlsm'. There are several possible reasons: .....
The file does exist. The path reported in the error is correct. The account under which the task is running is the same account I use to run it from the command line. User Account Control is not enabled, and the task is set up to run with highest privileges.
When I run the same script through the Task Scheduler from a Windows Server 2003 machine, it works without issue.
I was just wondering if somebody on this forum has run into a similar issue in connection with Windows Server 2008 R2 and figured out what the magic trick is to make it work. I'm sure it is rights related, but I haven't quite figured out what which rights
    are missing.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

This is truly killing me ... trying to get it working on Windows Server 2012 without success.
I desperately need to automate running Excel macros in a "headless" environment, that is non-interactive, non-GUI, etc.
I can get it to work using Excel.Application COM, either via VBScript or Powershell, successfully on many other Windows systems  in our environment - Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 (32-bit), etc.,  -BUT-
The two servers we built out for running our automation process are Windows Server 2012 (SE) - and it just refuses to run on the 2012 servers - it gives the messages below from VBScript and PowerShell, respectively-
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several different versions of Microsoft Excel (2007 Standard, 2010 Standard, 2010 Professional Plus, 32-bit vs. 64-bit, etc.), but it makes no difference.
Would be extremely grateful if any one out there has had any success in running Excel automation on Server 2012 in a non-interactive environment that they could share.
    ( I have tried adding the "%windir%\syswow64\config\systemprofile\desktop"
folder, which did fix the issue for me when testing on Windows Server 2008 R2, but sadly did not resolve it on Windows Server 2012 )

  • I have a time capsule connected directly to fiber connection. I have connected a windows server directly to TC and configured it for remote desktop connection. From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home. What config I need on TC?

I have a time capsule directly connected to fibre optic point out. All pcs and macs are connected wirelessly to the internet. I have connected a windows server pc to TC. When configured for Remote desktop connection, I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet. I guess I need to change some settings in TC to get some ip adress for the remote desktop connection from my home. Anyone who can help me out? Appreciate it.
    Narmin

I am a little lost now.. I have read again your title and your first post.. and they seem inconsistent.
    In the title you state.
From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home.
Interanet is not a word I know.. I assumed intranet...are you talking about internet or intranet? And just to be clear say WAN or LAN.. !! Is your home part of the interanet??
In the first post you state,
I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet.
Now this is more normal.. the issue is not in the home at all, it is accessible from there but fails from internet. If this is correct, then you can do a few obvious things to determine where the problem is.
But first I need to know are you actually testing from a different internet connection to your home lan.. you are not just trying the public IP from inside the LAN as that will fail due to the TC not doing NAT Loopback.
I am also assuming the TC is the only router in the network, and has the public IP on the WAN interface.
And I am also assuming you have turned on the ping responder and you can actually ping your public ip from the internet and get a response. This helps no end in figuring out where there are issues. Strange but I have no idea if there is a ping responder in the TC WAN so you might need to forward that as well. Also if you have a dynamic public ip address are you using dyndns or no-ip or some other service to connect.
    1. Test bypassing the TC.. plug the internet connection straight into the windows server,, and test if you have access. If yes, the TC is the problem.. if not, your setup on the windows server is wrong.. look at firewall in particular.
    2. Assuming from test 1 the TC is the problem, Post the screen shots of the port forwarding setup for us to look at.. that is by far the easiest way to check it out.
There are lots of references to port forwarding in the TC.. eg
    http://must-know-mac.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-port-forward-time-capsule.html
The things that generally go wrong are firewall on the computer that is accepting the port.
The ISP doesn't allow connections on a particular port. (not likely in your case)
The router is behind another router.. double NAT will kill any port forward.
Upnp has already allocated a port.. not an issue as TC doesn't use upnp although a reboot of everything after you set port forwards is well worth it.. amazing how things don't stick properly without a reboot.
IP on the receiving device is not static and so changes.
Not enough or right type of ports are opened. This is always messier than it looks as one port is often not enough for two way communications.

  • Mouse not working in Virtual machine (win2k3 32 and 64 bit) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies

I have installed two virtual machines(win2k3 32bit and win2k3 64bit ) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies (Beta) enterprise. Mouse is getting lost inside VM (using CTRL+ ATL +  LEFT ARROW  comes mouse control control in host OS).
Is there any setting to make mouse works? Insert Integration Serice setup Disk operation succeeds.

     all credits for mike_something
The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
    Reboot....
    tadaaa!!
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
    The driver:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
    The Service:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap
The CopyHook Shell Extension: ( for folder access )
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{30C14BA C-122C-42ED-B319-1139DBF48EB8}\InProcServer32
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandle rs\VPCCopyHook
After a reboot you can delete the "Virtual Machine Additions" folder from program files...
    Good Luck!

  • SAP Mobile Platform 3 compatibility with windows server 2012

    Dear All,
As per SAP release notes Window Server 2012 is compatible with SMP 3.0 but after installation i see that the SMP3 Services are always into the hung state meaning they neither start nor stop. They are always in the starting state. Whereas it runs fine with Windows Server 2008 R2. When we force kill all the process running with SMP3 Service we can stop it but it doesn't start at all.
Has anyone faced this issue till now.

  • SQL 2000 LINKED SERVER ERROR 7303 WITH SQL 2012 ON WINDOWS SERVER 2012 R2

    Hi all,
I have a problem with SQL Server 2012 and a linked server for SQL 2000 database.
    System specification:
    Windows server 2012 64 bit
    SQL SERVER 2012 64 bit
REMOTE SERVER SQL 2000 32 bit
I've installed sql native client 32bit,create a SYSTEM DSN odbc connection with "SQL Server" driver named "MYSERVER".
Create a linked server with the query below in SQL 2012:
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server =N'MYSERVER', @srvproduct=N'MYSERVER', @provider=N'MSDASQL', @datasrc =N'MYSERVER', @location=N'System';
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'MySERVER',@useself=N'True',@locallogin=NULL,@rmtuser=NULL,@rmtpassword=NULL
    GO
but when i browse the linked server i receved error 7303.

You need 64-bit MSDASQL. It is the bitness of the server you are connecting from that matters. 64-bit executables cannot hook into 32-bit DLL.
However, I suspect that you will not get things to work anyway. At least I have not seen anyone this far who has been able to set up a linked server from SQL 2012 to SQL 2000. I know that when I tried this, the following providers had this result:
SQLNCLI11 - does not support connections to SQL 2000.
SQLNCLI10 - failed with some obscure message that I don't recall.
SQLNCLI - Don't recall that the problem was here.
SQLOLEDB - SQLOLEDB is always replaced with the most recent version of SQLNCLI, so this fails because of lack of support.
I don't think I got through all version of the ODBC drivers, though.

  • Joining Windows Server 2008 to Windows Small Business Server 2008

We have Windows Small Business Server 2008 and it came with a copy of Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL. (A packeged deal from Microsoft).
Long ago I installed Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL on a computer and joined it with SBS2K8.
My Windows Small Business Server 2008 crashed and I had to redo it and now I can't get the Windows Server 2008 to join it.
We are not using the computers for a domain or anything but they are on our network with regular IP addresses.
The Windows 2008 Server uses the SBS2K8's IP address for it's DNS. The DNS for the  SBS2K8 is 127.0.0.1
We are using Windows Server 2008 for SolidEdge and MS SQL has to authenticate against the SBS2K8 to run.
Should I hook both computers up to a switch for their own network to get them talking to each other?
Do I have to put the Windows 2008 Server name in the SBS2K8 for a user?
    Please advise and thanks.

    Hi:
Read the warning at the end of this and be sure you follow it.
Can you explain further this part:  We are not using the computers for a domain or anything but they are on our network with regular IP addresses.
I ask because SBS MUST be a domain controller or it will not work.  Right click My Computer -  Properties - Computer name tab and let us know if the SBS is "domain" or "workgroup".
What I expect is the SBS is a Domain, and when you reinstalled it it becomes a new domain, even if it has the same name.  The Server was a member server in the old domain, so the solution to this is to change the Server 2008 with SQL from domain to
workgroup in the same place as above, then after it restarts rejoin it to the SBS domain by changing it once again to Domain.
Both the SBS and the Server 2008 should have static ip addresses and the SBS should be the DHCP server for the rest of the network, not your router/firewall.
Warning:  You MUST check in control panel - users on the Server 2008 to verify you have a local administrative level account and you are positive you know the password for that account.  When the server restarts after being placed into workgroup
mode the domain administrator will no longer be able to logon to the Server 2008.

  • Windows Server 2012 HyperV VMs becoming extremely sluggish and slow

I have recently set up a new system for a client consisting of a single Dell T320 server with Xeon E5-2350 2.2GHz 6 core cPU and 32GB of RAM.  Windows Server 2012 Standard is installed on the bare metal, and runs only the HyperV role.  It is not
    joined to any domains.
It hosts two VMs, one a Windows Server 2012 Standard VM containing the RDS related roles acting as remote desktop server, with 10GB RAM allocated and 3 cores.  Only 5 people use the terminal server concurrently.
The second VM is a Windows Server 2008 R2 based primary domain controller, with 16GB of RAM allocated and 3 cores.  It runs the AD role, as well as Exchange and GFI MailEssentials 2012.  Avira is also installed on this VM.
The problem is that the system will function properly for 3-4 days, then suddenly it goes into a state where a multitude of applications would start consuming inordinate amount of CPU time, and become very, very slow.  Almost like the hypervisor goes
into a software emulation mode where everything runs like molasses.  This affects BOTH VMs equally.  For example, Exchange and GFI on the Windows 2008 R2 VM together consume about 25% CPU, most of it is spent in kernel CPU time.  At the same
time, in the other Windows Server 2012 VM, svchost, Taskmgr, WMIPrvSE, LogonUI, Explorer,  sqlservr, wsmprovhost etc. will all consume a total of about 70% CPU time, this time 99% of this is user time, not kernel time.  When one user starts any application,
be that internet explorer, firefox or TaxPrep, the CPU spikes up to 100%.
All while nobody is using the system, the system is idle and no mails are flowing in or out of the system.  A reboot of the VMs does not fix anything, even a reboot of the host server does not fix anything.  When I yanked out the two power supplies
and performed a hardware diagnostic (which came back 100% OK), it booted up and the slowness was gone for 3 days, until today when it started acting up again like I described above.
One more thing, when the system behaves normally the sunspider javascript benchmark in IE10 takes 316ms to execute (average) on the HyperV host operating system.  When the system goes slow like this, I pause the two VMs in HyperV then run sunspider
again, only to be greeted by an average time of 5084ms.  So this clearly does not only affect the virtual machines but the host operating system as well. My gut still tells me the hypervisor is getting messed up somehow.
Any ideas?  This is a major problem and I have no idea what is causing it.

We have had the EXACT same thing happen with a Dell T320 on two separate servers. The first one was running SQL Server 2008 with nothing else funny going on. It ran fine for a month or so, then it developed this slowness issue. We finally installed SQL on
a loaner box (without Hyper-V) and it worked fine. We brought the T320 back to our shop and tested the hell out of it with Dell's assistance and it was NTF. Took it back onsite and moved an SBS 2011 VM over to it. After a few days, it ground to a halt. CPU
utilization was 100%. I started shedding services, killing Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. Even stripped to the essentials, the CPU was still up in the 60-70% range.
I put a T310 out onsite and downed the guest SBS vm. I copied the HUGE vhd over to the T310 (running Server 2008r2 with the Hyper-V role) and it ran perfectly. CPU at about 2-4%, spiking to 15% occasionally.
We finally concocted a story that the USB controller was bad, so they replaced the motherboard (not the CPUs) and it all seems to be working OK now after we sunk at least 100 man-hours into the problem.
Our second one is a similar setup. T320, Server 2012, Hyper-V role, SBS 2011 Standard and a couple of member servers running basic apps. No one can find any problem and everyone acts like this is something new, although my posting comes one year after Tim's
    original posting.

  • Installing CF9 on Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit

    Hi-
I'm attempting to  install a new ColdFusion configuration with a host who is useless  regarding the support that they offer (for now, they shall remain  nameless).
It's a Windows Server 2008 Standard 64 bit VPS  configuration. MySQL is already installed so I'm on the hook to  configure ColdFusion 9 with IIS (7.5, I believe). There are numerous  settings which the installer does not seem to address so I've had to  address several Module Mappings which failed during the install....
Can  anyone point me to an installation doc for the above configuration?  Will the CF installer eventually handle these issues or are we on our  own to support this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

My advice is to get out now and go to a site like hosting.com that has a solid track record hosting CF. There are several others to choose from. If they are starting this rough you will have constant problems.

  • Hyper-v Role in Windows Server 2012 foundation and Essentials

    Hello,
I have seen that the two low cost version of Windows Server 2012 essential and Foundation) will not support hyper-v. Can you please tell me what it means exactly :
Can you please tell me what is possible :
-The server can not be installed as a hyper-v  guest (probably yes)
-The hyper-v role can not be installed on the server (so I have to rely on vmware)?
    - Hyper-v role can be installed but there is no free license included with the server.
    Thank you
    Marc

I suppose then, you would have to install Windows 8 and Hyper-V as your guest or core.
Then run your Server 2012 Foundation under Win8.  which has 512GB Memory Limit.
It seems asinine that you cannot install this role on Foundation, but seemingly you could work around it with Win8.  (Or Sun Virtual Box (free) (or VmWare(Free).
So load up a dozen Win8Pro virutal sessions on that Win8 VirtualBox with up to 512GB Memory and Create your own Ghetto Remote Desktop Server with Foundation and Windows 8.   ;)
What good is it if your can't run Hyper-V and Remote desktop services?  Those are the two apps small business need most.  But Microsoft strips it out, calls it a DEAL  (Essentials and Foundation) , yet if you want the good stuff, you're gonna
have to buy Server 2012 Standard anyhow, + the CALs.
So you are hooked into this "deal" by Microsoft Special Offer.   Its special alright, because you get to buy it twice.  The stripped down version that come with your server, then the full version when you discover Foundatoin and Essentials gives
you AD, and thats it.  Nothing Else.  No "deal"
    Remember:
All you get with Foundation or Essentials is AD and Group Policy.
You cannot load RDP on Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange on a DC, or Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange and RDP on the same box.
You cannot have Remote Web Apps if you load RDP on your DC.
You cannot win with Microsoft.  No worthwhile "deal" has ever come out of the city of Redmond.
The internet is a one-way money pipeline to Microsoft.
Its three times the work, three times the cost and requires three servers licenses to do with 2012, what you could do with one 2008R2 license.
Might as well purchase 2 Server 2013 Standard Editions if you want:
    1.) Active Directory
2.) Remote Desktop and Remote Apps
    3.) Your own Exchange Server
You are better off installing a NAS if all you need is a file server.
Why bother with Foundation or Essentials?  Its a "Gimmick-ware"

  • SVCHost NetSVCS On Windows Server 2008 Standard memory leak with windows update

I have a particular situation that has surfaced lately.  I have a series of Windows Server 2008 Standard.  I have applications that use WMI to do application interfacing.  For years this has been running fine until recenly in the last month
I have seen memory being swallowed by the process SVCHost Netsvcs.  I have done significant research into this.  The problem appears almost like clock work on a daily basis.  I have traced this to windows update which seems to kick off, it is
also using WMI, it starts and seems to get lost then netsvcs starts running off until all memory is consumed and the svchost process eventually fails.  At that point I can get back into the system to view it. If I catch it in time I can simply stop windows
update but sometimes I have to take the drastic and unsafe measure to kill that particular svchost process.
There are a lot of threads regarding SVCHost and nothing comes remotely close to this issue as far as I can see.
I have allready ensured that windows update is up to date.
At present I am forced to ensure that windows update is disabled. I then have to manually shut down the other services that are using WMI to do an update.  This means down time for my applications realtime updates.

    Hi,
does this issue occur on a single server or multiple servers? And is it server 2008 or 2008 R2?  (if 2008R2 there is a
    hotfix
available which would seem a good fit for your current issue).

  • End-User Experience error running agent on windows server 2008 R2

    Hi,
I have installed implemented the end-Uer experience agent in a Windows 7 without issues but when we have installed the SDM 7.30 agent and the SAP GUI 730 in a Windows server 2008 R2 and we have configured the agent as End-User experience monitoring Robot in solution manager.
We have distributed one script without issues but the executios are failing with the message:
"SAPGUI Compontent" could not be instantiated (sapfewse):605
We have reviewed the bellow notes but wothout success:
1261706 - Kill bits set for SAP GUI Scripting
1092631 - Remote vulnerabilities in SAP GUI for Windows
We are able to run the scripts in the server directly in the SAPGUI and even with the EemEditor.
SAP message is open since last week, but my be you can provide a faster response.
    Could you please help me.
    Kind Regards

Have you followed installation procedure described in the following article: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ibf/setup_guide/ibf10_install.html ?
You can find troubleshooting hints in the following article: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ibf/setup_guide/ibf10_troubleshooting.html
I'd reccomend to install CDA instead of AD agent (nice GUI...) but you'll have to create new (virtual) server for that: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ibf/cda_10/Install_Config_guide/cda_install.html

  • SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 - Host ok for VmWare Server 2??

    Hello,
I am running a VmWare Server 2.02 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 - Host. Are there any known problems with regard to VmWare Server 2 when installing SP1 on the Windwos Server 2008 R2 - Host? I was reluctand to install SP1, because I was unable to find information to that question. Has anybody out there with the same configuration done the SP1-Update already?
    Regards,Martin Kluge

Thanks.. That's what I wanted to hear..
any updates since you posted this thread? still working?
It amazes me that they killed off Server, they could have moved it to paid and we would have been happy.
ESXi is great if your hardware supports it, ours doesn't.
We upgraded our linux OS when we did some disk upgrades on our secondary server a few weeks ago only to find server can't run on 2.6.41.. so -- its going to windows r2 2008.

  • X connection to :0.0 host broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

    Hello All,
I strongly believed in using JAVA Swing GUI, for huge data visualization.
    Now I encounter a problem:
I start up my application, and things work very well and looks pretty fast.
I try and create a JPanel with is almost 11.3MPixels (just length), and I don't have any problem. However, if I try and create a JPanel 15.4MPixels (just length), my application crashes and I receive a weird error - "X connection to :0.0 host broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)". This happens only on Linux (I am using Debian). I bumped Xmx till 1024m (My system has more than that).
If I run same application in Windows, I do not have this error at all, everything displays fine. I am using -Xmx200m.
This is not a Memory issue. I am assuming something is wrong with Java-on-Linux or I am unaware of what is happening.
Can anyone of you enlighten, and help me solve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jazz

    Hello All,
I strongly believed in using JAVA Swing GUI, for huge data visualization.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jazz
