Logs on if ethernet, but not airport

I just reinstalled OS 10.4.11 on a MacBook and did all updates (which is probably my problem). Computer is setup to connect with Open Directory to the network. If I login with the computer connected to the ethernet it logs in to my network account - however not all dock items are there. If I log in with computer connected only to airport, I get error msg "+Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help+."
Any ideas?

So, is it AFP or SMB? If SMB, is the Security Option policy named “Microsoft network server: digitally sign communications” disabled?
Has the IP of the Server changed?
Are you using Fast User Switching, or is there another login to this somewhere else active?
Have you tried unchecking the "Use UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location" and check on "Force local home directory on startup disk"?
Might see this for clues...

Do you mean that (a) you do not receive the the verifcation email, (b) the verifcation email does not have a working link in it, (c) the webpage at the address of the link in the verification email is not responding, (d) after typing in your Apple ID and password to verify your email address, the webpage does not respond, or (e) the Apple ID and password combination you are using to verify your email address does not match what Apple has on records.
    (1) If (a), check your junk folder for the email. If it is not there, see 2..
    (2) If (b, c, or d), then you might simply try later. The webpage could be have a temporary issue.

  • Can connect via Ethernet but not via AirPort

I'm having some problems using my AirPort in Germany. I can connect just fine using an Ethernet cable direct from the modem (NETGEAR DG632B) but when I have plug the Ethernet cable into the AirPort I can't connect. I beleive it has to do with PPoE settings, which I am not really familiar with.
There are three spots I can enter my account info. 1, on the modem itself via Safari; 2, on the AirPort via AirPort Admin Utility; 3, on the Mac via Network Preferences. I have input my PPoE username/password into the modem while directly connected. I would tend to think that this shoudl be it and that everywhere on the LAN side of the modem would be able to utilize that account. The NETGEAR settings page shows the ADSL port Network Type as PPPOE and the LAN port as DHCP, so I have attempted to set up my AirPort and Network prefs using DHCP. That leads to "You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because your computer isn’t connected to the Internet." Network Diagnostics shows green at AirPort, AirPort Settings, Network Settings and ISP. It initially shows yellow at Internet and Server which lead to "Failed" on both. Network Diagnostics then asks me to choose my network port configuration (Built-in Ethernet, Internal Modem, Airport,Other). I select AirPort and select my AirPort network. Then all the Status lights except for AirPort turn red and asks if I use a DSL or cable model. I select yes, it asks me to restart the device, I do, it asks if I can restart any other devices, I select no. At that point Network Diagnostics says it is unable to connect to the Internet.
I have down-graded to Airport Firmware v5.5.1 as some have advised. No change. I'm running MacOS 10.4.6
My AirPort is just fine as I can use it to set up a LAN with no problem. I even pulled out my old Graphite base station and tried it. Same thing.
I have tried putting my PPPoE account info into my AirPort, my Network prefs both individually and both at the same time. Nothing. Is there something that I'm missing?

You'll need to connect your modem to your AEBS WAN port, configure your AEBS with the Airport Admin Utility, setting up the PPOE to properly log into your modem connection.
You should set up your mac to us DHCP (not PPOE).
THis should allow you to use either the ethernet port or wireless from your AEBS.
    I hope this helps!

  • Old  Macbook connects to corporate ethernet --- but not my new Macbook Pro

I've now tried nearly everything to solve this problem: My old white plastic Macbook connects to the corporate LAN --- but not my new mid-2009 Macbook Pro.
All the settings are the same. I have on occasion managed to connect the new Macbook Pro to the network but only for a short time.
Our IT folks have checked the cable, the ports, routers etc and everything is just fine.
I am able to connect to the network from other ports in the office --- but not from my office (except with the old white plastic Macbook).
    Please, can someone help?

If you can connect when using other ports in your office the problem is almost a certainty that the issue is with the port you can't connect with. Did your IT guy switch ports at the switch side to one that is known to work? We can't troubleshoot your LAN and it sounds like your computer is set up correctly if it connects using other ports.

  • Can connect via Ethernet but not on Airport

I am able to connect fine with Ethernet. Initially when I brought up Safari it launched the modem and I had to enter my ISP username and password. Then I was able to connect fine with Ethernet. My problem is that I cannot connect with Airport. I disconnect the Ethernet from my MacBook, then I turn on Airport. It detects the wireless modem. I select it. It connects fine, but no internet. I go to the System Preferences, Network. But find nothing wrong. Am I missing something ??? Please advise.

    Hi,
You also might want to check that the AirPort doesnt have it selected to have the IP set manually. Always have this detected by DHCP. There should'nt be any problems there, if you are using the Ethernet cable.

  • My MacBook logs onto the wifi but not my iPhones or iPad? What to do?

    Macbook
iPhone 3GS just moved to Version 5
iPhone 4 just moved to Version 5
    iPad
My MacBook has successfully logged on through an airport device in a new location, after a reconfiguration. However our iPhones and iPad don't want to follow. It shows the network icon but when an app is launched, it says it's not connected to the internet.
I have reset 'network settings' and also rebooted, without success (with retyped password).
    What next?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Christian

    Thank you bob Timmons!
I did as you suggested elsewhere on this site.
If you have a simple modem (only 1 ethernet port) check to make sure that the Connection Sharing setting on the AirPort Extreme is set correctly.
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address would be the correct setting.
Then try a full modem reset and power cycle as follows
Push the reset button on the modem
    Power the modem down
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Leave the modem off at least 30 minutes
Power down the rest of the entire network
Start the modem first, let it run 4-5 minutes by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme, let it run 4-5 minutes by itself
Then start each device up one at a time"

  • Works on ethernet, but not wireless

I'm configuring my AirPort Extreme after some cable modem problems and now the wireless won't work. The AirPort utility says it doesn't have a proper IP address, but I can get internet through an ethernet cable from the AE box, so that doesn't seem right. The amber light is flashing. I've tried resetting and pulling the power, but no luck. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Eh? PPPoE connection to the cable modem from the AE? Unless I missed something that is never going to work.
    1. Cable modems do not use PPPoE. It's equivalent I guess would be DOCSIS.
    2. The Cable modem will have an Ethernet output.
The only way what you are describing might would would be if the AEBS was connected direcly to the phone point, in that case use PPPoE, or the device it is connected to, some kind of ADSL modem, not Cable modem, is passing through PPPoE to the AEBS.
If the OP is connnecting to a cable modem, via Ethernet, turn off PPPoE on the AEBS and switch to Ethernet.
If there is nothing between the two devices, then enable DHCP so that the AEBS picks up the WAN IP and turn on one of the methods of connection sharing, enabling DHCP and NAT for devices connecting behind it via Ethernet or Wireless.

  • I can home share to Apple TV via ethernet but not wireless.  Please help!!

This has been driving me mad for a week now. I have an acer Laptop using windows vista. When I connect the Ethernet cable to my rout and laptop, home sharing works fine. But as soon as I disconnect and go wireless, Apple TV cannot find my library. My partner has a HP laptop that operates on windows xp. That works fine. can anyone help and give me a step by step guide with what to do? I've checked every apple forum on the matter and nothing seems to work. I figure it's got something to do with my wireless Internet settings. It can't be the router if my partners library shares ok, right?? I've uninstalled macafee and even turned my windows firewall off. But surely these weren't problems in the first place if Ethernet connection works?!? Am not very tech savvy, so any simple things to check would be SO appreciated.

Homesharing should work over ethernet too, ask your network provider about homesharing, it may be that the university doesn't allow it.

  • DSL bridged works on ethernet but not wireless.

I have been trying to solve my NAT problems with Xbox live.  My first attempt is to bridge my Motorola/Netopia 2210 DSL modem, ISP is Bellsouth/ATT.
I successfully set the 2210 to bridge mode.  I set the router (wrt54gl) to PPPoE and entered my bellsouth login.  When I am hardwired into port 1 of the router I can connect to the Internet.  When I unplug the ethernet cable and disable local connection and enable wireless, I lose my full connection and get a local only connection.
I have power cycles all devises in order modem, router, laptop but that does not seem to help.  If I enable PPPoE on the 2210 and DHCP on the router I get full access both wireless and wired.
    any ideas?

When you set the modem in the bridge mode and router as in PPPOE mode, Are you able to see the your wireless network?
If yes, then follow the below mentioned settings.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...
Click on "Administration" tab and disable the option UPnP and click Save Settings...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done...
    2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
3)Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...
    4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
    IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...
IP Address: 192.168.X.[last part of ip in your device]    e.g. if static ip given to the device was 192.168.X.10 get the last part and put that to the empty box.
This should fix the issue for you.

  • Airport loses my network, but not airport extreme signal

Since upgrading to leopard (10.5.1), my wireless network of computers (I am using an imac & mac pro book and a new airport extreme 802.11n base - all of which have worked without problems since networking them 6 months ago), will sometimes not show my own network as a network option in the airport status indicator in the menu bar (this happens sporadically with no apparent regularity). I have 4 bars of airport signal reception and I can even see the networks available around me, but mine will not be there. Usually it will pick it back up if I turn airport off and then reopen it but sometimes I have to restart the whole computer. This doesn't seem to be systemic in that one computer may lose the network while the other is working fine....any ideas. I have seen a lot of postings about wonky airport performance with the new leopard OS, but I couldn't find an answer to this.

Hi, (Sorry this is the first time I've posted on a forum)
I had a similar problem. I had successfully set up a network with 2 window computers, running XP and Vista, and an airport extreme. Works great so long as I don't upgrade the firmware on the basestation to 7.2.1.
Recently I saw the light and purchased an Imac with Leopard and Bootcamp. Couldn't connect to my network. Did recommended changes like turning off IPv6 in the imac's airport utility, and changed the basestation IPv6 mode to local link only. Tried to manually setup DNS server address etc on th imac. Went thru the usual stuff with the Apple helpline. No luck.
Found the only way to connect to the network was to switch off the basestation, get the network diagnostic on the imac to start searching for any networks, then switch back on the basestation. Worked.
Then I read on the forum about trying different radio channels on the basestation, rather than leaving it on the default setting "automatic". I tried Channel 11 and (I guesss it it Xmas!) it works perfectly.
    Hope this is of help.

  • ICal Server - User can log in from iPhone but not from Desktop Mac

I've got quite the peculiar problem with iCal Server on OS X 10.6.6 - my users can log in and access the shared calendars using their iPhones. When I set up an the same account on their desktop Macs in iCal, I get an error message "The server did not recognize your user name or password for account <username@servername>".
I'm positive that username and password are correct. The only thing I found about that in the log files was that the CalDAV server returns a 201 HTTP status code when accessing the account from the iPhone vs. a 407 status code when using iCal on their desktop Mac. The same accounts are used for Email, File Sharing and Address book, all of which run fine.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Maybe even solved it?

Solved it myself - there was a non-ASCII character in the account password. Strange that the iPhone didn't have a problem with that while iCal did. Now that I've changed the password to contain only ASCII characters, the problem is gone.

  • Time capsule USB printer works when I connect via ethernet but not over wifi

I have a USB printer hooked up to my new Time Capsule. If I turn off my wifi and connect to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable it works fine. When I try to do the same thing over wifi (even when I'm sitting next to it) it cant seem to make a solid connection. Most of the time it just says Printer Paused, but sometimes it will work, other times the printer just clicks, or starts but then stops. Other than that my wifi connection seeems pretty good.
Is there something with the settings with my older "08 MacBook and the newer Time Capsule?
Any help is very much appreciated,
    Thanks

    Very interesting one..
Did you upgrade install ML into the MB??
It sounds to me like it has corrupted the wireless drivers.. and I think you will need to do a clean install.
If you have internet working over wireless I see no reason for this to happen though.

  • My password only works to log into the computer, but not to make admin changes, even though I am the admin account on the computer.  This happened after I tried to change the computer's name. Is there any way to fix this?

Bought my laptop off my room mate and he had master reset it to default.  This still left his name as the computer name and I wanted to change that.  Tried to rename it under the advanced changes section, and now it isn't recognizing my password for anything more than logging in.  I can't unlock the settings to make further changes (or change it back).  I have had my room mate try all of his old passwords and usernames, to no avail.  Is there a way to reset this?  It's also not letting me wipe the drive and start fresh again because, alas, I don't have access without the password.  Any advice would be very helpful.  Thank you!
