Logs out to white screen

Hi,
Our iMac is 8 months old. We installed Mountain Lion when it first came out. Recently when my wife or I log out of our accounts, about half the time it goes to a white screen. The only way to proceed from there is to hold down the power button until the machine shuts down. On restart everything seems fine.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Paul

Could possibly be attributed to a third-party app (MagicPrefs had that effect at sime time, but I guess they have an updated verson by now).
If you boot in Safe mode (holding Shift-key down) and you are able to shut down properly it would probably imply such a scenario.
If you´re used to never quitting any programs per se (only windows), the total shutdown process may take some time by the sheer number of processes to be closed (but I guess your problem is that it never shuts down properly in the end).

• How do i get out of white screen after login

How do i get out of the white screen after signing on to my computer.

Hi GregConk,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If I understand right, your iMac is only starting up to a blank white screen after you log in. If so, there are some good troubleshooting steps that may resolve this behavior.
First, try booting your computer into Safe Mode, to see if your desktop appears in this mode:
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.

• How do I know a user has been logged out from another screen

If one user is already logged in to the web application and another user with the same user name and password trying to log in to the same web application, i need to logout the first screen's user session. In other word, I want to disable first screen access right since it has been logged out.
I have a user log class to record users login activities. A new user log object will be created for every login.
How should I do that?

Try to write an implementation of HttpSessionListener and HttpSessionAttributeListener something like the one down below and configure it accordingly.Believe tht should very well cater your requirment.
public SessionAttributeListener implements HttpSessionAttributeListener,HttpSessionListner{
List<HttpSession> sessionsList;
public SessionAttributeListener(){
this.sessionsList = new ArrayList<HttpSession>();
public void sessionCreated(HttpSessionEvent se){
public void sessionDestroyed(HttpSessionEvent se) {
this.sessionList.remove(se.getSession());
public void attributeAdded(HttpSessionBindingEvent se){
if(se.getName().equals("userInfo"))
this.appAction(se);
public void attributeRemoved(HttpSessionBindingEvent se){
if(se.getName().equals("userInfo"))
this.sessionsList.remove(se.getSession());
public void attributeReplaced(HttpSessionBindingEvent se) {
private void appAction(HttpSessionBindingEvent se){
UserBean ub = (UserBean)se.getValue();
for(HttpSession session:this.sessionsList) {
UserBean ub1 = (UserBean)session.getAttribute("userInfo");
if(ub1.getUserName().equals(ub.getUserName())){
try{
session.removeAttribute("userInfo");
session.invalidate();
}catch(Exception exp){}
this.sessionsList.add(se.getSession());
}Hope this might give you a brief idea of how to go about. :)

• Mac keeps logging out and blanking screen.

hi.
for some reason my mac just keeps logging out and blanking the screen at random points each day.
its VERY weird.
is there anything i can do about it?

There are a number of things that you could try - resetting SMC and PRAM, doing an Apple Hardware Test, reinstalling system software, etc.
But, if I were you, I'd take the unit into an Apple Store or an AASP. But be certain that you backup all of your data before you take it in.
When there's no rhyme nor reason to restarts and 'blank screens' on a daily basis, it's best just to let Apple handle it - they can run tests that aren't available to mere mortals. Could be anything...

• ?: Automatically logged out to login screen

Hey everyone, I'm currently having an issue with gnome. My system boots fine up to the GDM. When i log in everything seems to be going fine, the desktop loads, but before the panels or anything else loads i am kicked out back to the GDM login screen. I haven't experienced this before and am confused as to how to fix it from automatically logging me back out every time i try to log in. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to see any logs just let me know and I will post the logs asked for. I recently did a full system reinstall but I am very sure I didn't miss anything while reinstalling. Any help would be great.
Thanks

MadTux wrote:So just to clarify things, did login work after you reinstalled your system? It could be a result of any programs automatically started for your user after login. So, you could create another user and try to login with that and see if you have the same problems.
Hey madtux
No the login didn't, I had switched to a different distro for a little bit just to try out another, but this time when switching back to arch this problem kept happening so I haven't been able to login successfully from gnome at all since re-installation. It seems like it just logs me back out to the GDM login screen, and every time i type my password it will start to login but then just kick me out again.

• Hw to auto log-out from SAP screen ????

Do any one has this answer ?
Pls send me on my mail id [email protected]...
i would be very thankful to you......

Dear Vish,
Put this profile parameter 'rdisp/gui_auto_logout'
That should logout/end the user session if they are idle.
Do let me know in case of any queries.
Hope this helps you.
Do award points if you found them useful.

• Blue screen with spinning gear when quit apps/log out

My issue was when I quit all applications and logged out. The screen turned a light blue and in the center a spinning gear. After this screen was there for some time, it was just blue...and then it finally went back to the normal login screen and I pressed "sleep".
I woke it up and tried logging in as Guest to see if it did the same thing. I quit all applications and the same result.
I did install Touchcopy that morning...perhaps something happened with that? Although it is supposed to be compatible with Leopard and Snow Leopard and I used the program during the day and it worked fine and quit fine.
Do you know what would cause this? I couldn't find anything on this discussion site.
I see people talking about "reparing permissions", but I don't know what this means. As I said, this is my first Mac.
thanks!!!!

Thanks for your help. I have read so many people talk about "repairing permissions", but I didn't know what that was. I know plenty of Windows maintenance and "best practices", but none for Mac. Thanks..

• I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro (2009) & the "White Screen of Death" is present. Need help?

I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro (2009). Recently I bought an extended hard drive because I had used up the memory on my iDisk. As I was running the Time Machine back up on my new extended drive, the battery on my Pro ran out causing it to shut down. Once I hooked up my Pro to the power cord & logged in, the "White Screen of Death" appeared on the home display. Obviously the battery still works, my phone is able to charge along with the extended drive, I am able to adjust the lighting on my keyboard along with adjusting the brightness on my screen, but the "White Screen" remains. I need help in determining the cause of this issue & the steps I'll need to take in order to resolve this. I love my Pro, all my documents, photos & music are on it & the last thing I want to do is kill my wallet by buying a new Pro. So could someone on here please help me? It would be greatly appreciated & I thank you in advance!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 8
This step applies only to a Mac Pro tower, not to any other model. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

• On an iMAC running OSX10.8.4, after a "sleep" it wakes to white screen, no response to any commands. Have to reboot. Any suggestions?

About half the time when I allow my iMAC to go into sleep mode it wakes to a blank white screen. No sequence of commands will get it out of white screen. I have to re-boot from start and then it gives an error dialog box "you shut down because of a problem". Is there a bug in 10.8.4, or am I missing something?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

• White Screen of Death, Please Help

Hey Guys ;
I have an imac 2010 with windows installed on it (No MacOS is installed). today I updated the windows and shut it down and after a few hours I turned it on but now I am only getting the white screen ! it doesnt boot up at all ! I dont know if this problem is related to windows update or not. it may be only luck that this has happened after updating my windows.
I tried to boot it from CD or a flash drive , but holding the option key or d or c doesnt do anything. when holding the option key , even the mouse cursor doesnt appear !
the only thing that works is reseting the PRAM , when I hold the option and command and p and r , I can hear the second chime , but still it doesnt boot up. it is why I am sure my keyboard is working. also I tried to reset the SMC but no results.
also I tried command + r and command + v , but no luck ! only white screen.
I dont understand why I dont get any kind of output ! even if my hdd is broken I should be able to boot from a CD , right ? or at least it should show some kind of error message or logs. but only white screen.
do you have any suggestions ?

Yes , I was using the original grey DVD. I tried holding all possible keys ! nothing worked.
Eventually I found out my HDD is dead , I opened my iMac and disconnected my HDD and now it can boot from CD. but the problem is that it shouldnt work this way. I have had a PC for many years and even if HDD dies , you can go to bios or boot from other devices and etc. it shouldnt cause a white screen of death !
may be apple is doing this intentionally so it can charge people for fixig their imacs ! it is not something complicated , it was just a dead HDD and I was getting no error messages or anything, Just a dead imac. thats frustrating.

• My MacBook was acting weird so I restarted it and when I login a white screen flashes and goes back to the login page. Help?

My MacBook was acting weird like sometimes I would log on and I wouldn't be able to type my password for a couple seconds,but it usually logged in after that. Then I left my computer open after installing the recent update after that all my applications were not responding. So I shut it down, when I turned it back on about an hour later it went to this loading screen and then to the login like usual. After I tried logging in a white screen flashed and it went back to the login/ password screen like nothing happened. Any ideas on what happened and what I can do to fix it?

Reinstall OS X;
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You need more free storage. If your Mac is frozen, hold the Power button until it turns off.
Then, hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start in safe mode. Safe mode will allow you to access into Mac OS X and delete or move data, so you can use Mac OS X in normal mode again.
After logging in, the only thing you have to do is to look for files in your user's folders and delete or move them to an external drive. You can also see what categories are taking more space in  > About this Mac > More Info > Storage.
When you have finished, restart and see if you can log in

• Increase idle log out time of IC WebClient to 60 minutes

Hello All,
We are in the process of implementing ICWC for CRM 5.0.
After we open the CIC screen via transaction: CRM_IC; and remain idle for some time, the system automatically logs out of the CIC screen.
We want the system to log out of ICWC screen only when the the screen has been idle for 60 minutes.
Please guide me to do this.
Regards,
Khushboo

Thanks for your prompt response Sudipta.
I used TCode: SMICM and navigated to the said parameter: icm/keep_alive_timeout but there is no way I can change that parameter.
As a workaround I used transaction RZ10 to assign the new value to icm/keep_alive_timeout parameter. But the change is not reflected in SMICM TCode. Please guide how to change the parameter value.
Regards,

• Why log out is slow? (3 min.) When it used to log out fast before.

This doesn't affect the performance of my i-Mac, but I wander why suddenly, my computer became very slow when I log out. The screen stays blue with a spinning weel at the bottom for few minutes when it used to take only few seconds. Could it be a sort of virus?

Sorry. The following line come from my system log. Few warnings show. Could it be Suitcase?
