LOL Another Thread From A Unhappy BT Customer !

Pretty funny reading through all the threads... every one bashing BT ! lol... I guess people consider signing up for BT should read this forum first... eek !
I am absolutely dispondant about the service I receive from BT, nothing short of a joke ! And it's time to move to one of the other service providers, better the devil you know ? I think not...
So why am I posting here ? I thought I would make one last effort to give BT a chance to respond... considering how long I have been with them I would hope as a valued customer LMAO ! They might just make some effort !
I have the Option 3 package for Broadband, you know the "UPTO 20 meg" the keyword being UPTO !!! What a joke... talk abotu false advertising... is there any one in the country getting that 20 meg lol... maybe the guy in their TV ads lol...
So anyone want to guess what I get ? Half of it maybe, 10 MB **bleep** I would give my right arm... 8 Meg... keep going... 6 meg, 5 meg, 4 meg... nope still not close ! I get a meastly 1.9, not even 2 meg lol... I get 10% of the service they say I can potentially get... hmmm 10% pretty good ! lol... should I pay 10% of my bill, **bleep** no they would cut me off in seconds (well days) !
So BT step up ? What is going on... oh hang on let me guess "We dont sell by speed" no but you use it as a selling point... someone tell me what I can do ? Apart from going else where ?

SO I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE THEN ?
                                                      After being with Tiscali Terrors and the lovely? people at Pipex (all now under the OPAL umbrella) I have finally brought me BB over to BT....Always had my landline payments with them and now set up with an "anytime" call package.   Something about EGGS and BASKETS?
Going back, Pipex gradually slowed down so much I went from a 50>1 contention ratio pacakge to the "small business" at 20>1 and for a while it was faster.....then gradually slowed down. THEY blamed BT for
"Traffic Shaping" and BT said, not their problem cos you are NOT one of our BB customers....Rock and Hard place.
Jan 2010, became a BT broadband customer also.....Promised a Mere 2.5 meg speed....after already dumping an ISP who were giving me 3.5> 4.0
Nealry SIX MONTHS worth of complaints later I finally get an engineer visit who changes my old ISDN socket for an ADSL and reset me "profile" speed to 5.00.....Wonderful....you might say.  Guy across the road, phone line fed from the  SAME POLE  as my phone line is getting 6.5 PLUS!  Girl up the road (and I have verifed BOTH of their phone numbers with BT) and am still told that 5.00 is the highest stable speed they can give me when I am only 0.9 miles from the exchange.    Lets see if this is the case when my contract is due for renewal :-)
BT ACCELERATOR...HA HA.....HA HA....Do you know what they consist of?
Although I am not massivly technically minded,  I have enough common sense to have passed a City & Guilds Radio Amatuer exam about 25 years ago, which involved a bit of practical work and electronic theory,  and I know what a "tuned circuit" is......and this "accelerator" is basically a noise filter....ALWAYS ASSUMING you HAVE any noise on the line to start with....I DIDN'T, so it was never going to improve things :-(
                                BT will probably hate me for telling you this, and this may well get deleted....
Unplug it, remove the two small screws on the back (You shouldn't break anything) Check it out for yourself.
This accelerator actually consists of TWO small coils of wire wound on a "former".....these are more commonly know as torrids....and across the ends of this two coils is an electrolytic capacitor....sort of thing you might find in an old transistor radio if you have ever pulled one apart......THAT, IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS.....
Just one question....and you will probably get the same answer every time.....
What's the difference between I G N O R A N C E   and   A P A T H Y ?
I    D O N' T    K N O W
AND
I    D O N 'T    C A R E.......

  • How can I pass an exception from one thread to another thread

    If I create a new class, that will extends the class Thread, the methode run() can not be use with the statement Throws Exeption .
    The question now: Is there any possibility to pass an exception from one thread to another thread?
    Thx.

    It really depends on what you want to do with your exception. Is there some sort of global handler that will process the exceptions in some meaningful way? Unless you have that, there's not much point in throwing an exception in a thread, unless you simply want the stack trace generated.
    Presuming that you have a global handler that can catch exceptions, nest your Exception subclass inside a RuntimeException:
    public class NestedRuntimeException extends RuntimeException
        private final m_nestedException;
        public NestedRuntimeException(final Exception originalException)
            super("An exception occurred with message: " + originalException.getMessage());
            m_nestedException;
        public Exception getNestedException()
            return m_nestedException;
    }Your global handler can catch the NestedRuntimeException or be supplied it to process by the thread group.

  • Catching an exception thrown from another thread

    I have a SocketServer that creates new threads to handle incoming clients. If one of the threads throw a SQLException is it possible to catch that exception in the SocketServer that created that thread.
    I tried implementing this code and I cannot get the server to catch an exception thrown in the thread. Are my assumptions correct?
    I was reading something about Thread Groups and implementing an uncoughtException() method, but this looked like overkill.
    Thanks for your time!
    Some Example code would be the following where the ClientThread will do a database query which could cause an SQLException. I'd like to catch that exception in my Socket Server
          try
                 new ClientThread( socketServer.accept() , host, connection ).start();
          catch( SQLException e )
                 System.out.println( "DataSource Connection Problem" );
                  e.printStackTrace();
          }

    hehe, why?
    The server's job is to listen for an incoming message from a client and pass it off to a thread to handle the client. Otherwise the server will have to block on that incoming port untill it has finished handling the client and usually there are many incoming clients continuously.
    The reason I would want to catch an exception in the server based on the SQLException thrown in the thread is because the SQLException is usually going to be due to the fact the datasource connection has become unavalable, or needs to be refreshed. This datasource connection is a private variable stored in the socket server. The SocketServer now needs to know that it has to refresh that datasource connection. I would normally try to use somesort of flag to set the variable but to throw another wrench into my dilemma, the SocketServer is actually its own thread. So I can't make any of these variables static, which means I can't have the thread call a method on teh socket server to change the status flag. :)
    I guess I need implement some sort of Listener that the thread can notify when a datasource connection goes down?
    Thanks for the help so far, I figured java would not want one thread to catch another thread's exceptions, but I just wanted to make sure.

  • Are you suppose to access UIView from another thread?

    A lot of UI events in my apps take place in another thread. So in my uivewcontroller, it catches a button click for example, it launches a NSThread with some parameter. The reason I decided to use a thread is because if the duration takes long the UI completely locks up. The thread then fetches for some result and access a pointer to a UIView (a UILabel for example) and update it's content.
    Now, is this model correct? I'm running in cases where setting the UILabel.text from the thread sometimes work, sometimes doesnt. I'm not sure how to debug. If I change the thread call to a standard method call (which blocks until results are ready) the text is updated correctly.
    Any hints?

    hi,guys,i have some code like this:

    You can't catch exceptions from another thread. It's that easy. You could somehow ensure that exceptions from that other thread are always caught and somehow passed to your thread, but that would be a different thing (you would still be catching the exception on the thread it is originating from, as is the only way).
    For example you can use setUncaughtExceptionHandler() on your thread to provide an object that handles an uncaught exceptions (and you could pass that uncaught exception to your other thread in some way).

  • Start timer from another thread

    I am working on a project which will receive command from telnet and start a timer.
    In the sock function, I use form reference to call timer.start(), but timer control cannot start Tick event:
    Here is code for sock functin after receive the command:
     static void appServer_NewRequestReceived(AppSession session, StringRequestInfo requestInfo)
                switch (requestInfo.Key.ToUpper())
                    case ("START"):
                        session.Send(requestInfo.Body);
                        changetimer(1, requestInfo.Body);
    break;}}
    Here is the function to call timer start:
      static void changetimer(int action, string incomingmsg)
                //timer1.Start();
                Form1 frm = (Form1)Application.OpenForms["form1"];
                switch (action)
                    case 1:
                         frm.timer1.Start();
                         break;
                    case 2:
                        frm.timer1.Stop();
                        break;
    and this is timer tick :
    private void timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e)
                TimeSpan result = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(second);
                string fromTimeString = result.ToString();
                label1.Text = fromTimeString;
                second = second + 1;

    You should start the timer on the UI thread. You could use the Invoke method to access a UI element from another thread:
    static void changetimer(int action, string incomingmsg)
    //timer1.Start();
    Form1 frm = (Form1)Application.OpenForms["form1"];
    switch (action)
    case 1:
    frm.Invoke(new Action(() => { frm.timer1.Start(); }));
    break;
    case 2:
    frm.Invoke(new Action(() => { frm.timer1.Stop(); }));
    break;
    Hope that helps.

  • Shutting down a panel in one thread from another thread.

    For various reasons, I have a program with two threads (actually more than two, but only two are concerned here). One is the main panel that runs at startup, another is a Virtual O'Scope panel with a real-time display. Everything works more or less well, until it's time to exit the program.
    The main program starts by calling a routine to display the VO'scope; this routine calls CmtScheduleThreadPoolFunctionAdv to schedule the VOscope thread with the function VOscopePanelMain.
    VOscopePanelMain initializes things, displays the VOscope panel, and then calls RunUserInterface(); to process events in the VOscope panel.
    When it comes time to close the window, closing the panel (the X box in the upper right corner) triggers the panel callback CB_VoscopePanel, which processes the EVENT_CLOSE: event by calling QuitUserInterface(0); which, in turn, causes RunUserInterface to return to VOscopePanelMain, which then shuts things down, closes the panel properly, and exits. So far so good.
    int CVICALLBACK CB_VoscopePanel (int panel, int event, void *callbackData,
            int eventData1, int eventData2)
        int    iPanelHeight, iPanelWidth, iV2ControlLeft, iV2ControlWidth, iWidth,
            iT2ControlTop, iT2ControlHeight, iHeight, iLeft, iGap, iScreenTop, iScreenLeft,
            iTop, iBoxWidth;
        switch (event) {
            break;
        case EVENT_GOT_FOCUS: //happens when first displayed or refreshed
        case EVENT_PANEL_SIZE: //size the controls on the panel
           ... do stuff here;
            break;
        case EVENT_CLOSE:
            QuitUserInterface(0);  //stop VOscopePanelMain, which in turn closes the panel and cleans stuff up.
            break;
        return 0;
    However, I also want the panel to stop when I close the main program. The only way that I know how to do this cleanly is to have the main program (which has closed all of its panels and is in the process of shutting down) call VOSCOPE_Close_VOScope () which, in turn, calls CallPanelCallback (iHandle_VOscope, EVENT_CLOSE, 0, 0, 0); (which forces a call to CB_VoscopePanel above with the EVENT_CLOSE event), which should call QuitUserInterface, which should cause the RunUserInterface in VOscopePanelMain to return and let it continue to shut down. In addition, after calling CallPanelCallback, the shutdown routine calls CmtWaitForThreadPoolFunctionCompletion to wait for the VOscopePanelMain thread to actually quit and clean up before proceeding.
    But, of course, it doesn't since, and it took me a while to realize this. The call to QuitUserInterface isn't coming from inside of the VOscopePanelMain thread, it's coming from the main panel's thread - which is already in the process of shutting down. So, the main panel thread is telling itself to quit, VOscopePanelMain never gets the QuitUserInterface message, and things stall.
    So: how do I have one thread tell a panel in another thread to cleanly close? Or do I have to get complicated and either replace RunUserInterface in VOscopePanelMain with a loop that processes events manually and looks for a flag, or figure out something with a thread-safe queue? Any help appreciated.

    Sorry for delay in answering, it took me a while to find time to build up a working example.
    The attached program spawns a thread in a new thread pool and permit you to choose whether to close it from the main thread or the spawned thread itself.
    It appears that in such a minimal configuration the process works as expected. There may be some different configuration in your actual program that prevents this.
    Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • Killing an exec'ed process from another thread

    Hi all,
    I written an application that executes some external OS - processes. There is a dispatcher thread, that starts the execution threads for some jobs. Every execution thread creates a Processes by calling runtime.exec(), adds this object to a TreeMap ( member of the dispatcher ), creates two threads for reading the output of the process ( sdtout & stderr ) and calls p.waitFor(). From this moment this thread is blocked. After the process is done, the results will be processed by this thread etc. Now I want to go ahead and let the application user kill the process. For them I let the dispatcher - thread, that has also a reference to the executed process to call destroy of it if necessary during the execution thread is blocked by waitFor() and two output threads are reading stdout & stderr. The problem is however that destroy() - call from another thread doesn't kill the subprocess. The subprocess is running until it's done or terminated from out of jvm. Have you an idea or example?
    Thanks a lot & regards
    Alex

    >
    I know you have been discussing your problem is that
    you can't kill a "sleep" process. But just to be
    sure, I tested your description by one thread exec-ing
    a "not-sleep" program, and then another thread had no
    trouble killing it.
    I took your code and wrote a program around it such
    that
    Thread1 :
    - creates a Job (but not a "sleep" job); creates a
    JobMap ; puts Job in JobMap
    - starts Thread2 (passing it JobMap)
    - sleeps 15 seconds
    - calls Job.kill() (your method)
    Thread2 :
    - gets Job from JobMap
    - calls Job.execute() (your method)
    It's quick and dirty and sloppy, but it works. The
    result is when the kill takes place, the execute
    method (Thread2) wakes from its waitFor, and gets
    exitValue() = 1 for the Process.
    so,
    In order to kill the sleep process, which (according
    to BIJ) is not the Process that you have from exec
    call, maybe the only way to kill it is to get its PID
    an exec a "kill -9" on it, same as you said you had to
    do from the commandline. I don't know if you can get
    the PID, maybe you can get the exec-ed process to spit
    it onto stdout or stderr?
    (I am on win, not *nix, right now, so I am just
    throwing out a suggestion before bowing out of this
    discussion.)
    /MelHi Mel,
    yes, it should work right on windows because you created probably the shell by cmd /c or something like this. If you kill the cmd - process, everithing executed by the interpretter will be killed too. My application is running on Windows and unix. On unix I have to execute the process from a shell ( in my case it is the born shell ). The problem is however, that the born shell has another behaviour as cmd and doesn't die. Do you have an idea how to get the pid of the process started by sh without command line? To kill the processes from the command line is exactly what my customers do now. But they want to get "a better service" ...:-)
    Regards
    Alex

  • Keymapping (follow up from another thread)

    To follow up on another thread, I checked out the keymappings and found most of what I was looking for.
    Only a couple of things I miss:
    1. SHIFT + TAB doesn't pull the text back with it if the text is not selected. I am convised most editors do this and I keep find myself trying to do it in JDev and it doesn't work, and then I go in a huff.
    2. Ctrl+K, Ctrl+L to perform a word match forwards or backwards, based purely on text in the document, ie. not syntax/context sensitive. This was one of my most used/most time saved features in Netbeans.

    Hi,
    don't understand what 1) is supposed to do. Can you explain this further? Winword and TextPad behave differently. I tried NetBeans and shift+tab is doing nothing.
    For 2) Is it the same as
    pressing ctrl+f to enter a search string and then continuing with F3 for forward matches and shift+F3 for backward matches? If you select a string before pressing ctrl+f then this string is added to the search list.
    If yes, then you can change the key mapping in Tools-->Preferences --> Accelerators to the keyboard combination you are most familiar with (look for "find").

    I'm glad you got it.
    I have a precise method for within page anchors but it is too abstract for people here, so I toned it down with javascript scroll function... and yet, people still don't understand it.
    The method dynamically set/changes both source and destination of the anchors during the page load. The trick is how to set the anchors in iWeb Inspector.
    Yes, I was impressed with the utlization of the array and for loop to create the references for xyz number of links. The code could've been more bloated, but yours was efficient. I have reverence for your code's efficiency and functionality.
    That said, as of iweb3... I can build my own widgets to deal with common things like this. I'd built much more complicated widgets than just within page anchors. Have a look at my page:
    http://home.cyclosaurus.com/UnderConstruction.html
    I've tinkered wtih C, Java, and Javascript enough to appreciate good code. I am not interested in devoting more time to coding (my emphasis is NLP now), so I can't go into more depth with this, but needless to say, I was impressed with how concise, functional (non-buggy), and intuitive your javacript snippet was.
    the "_anchors" variable seems to be handled really well and you set it up for cross-browser platforms (// http:/ == Safari , http:/// == EI7 and FF).
    I may scrutinze this more to further my understanding of arrays. This is an article I wrote on arrays during a computer science class in college.
    In any case. Clean codekid. quality!
    Lastly, I have total control over every widget that I add on my page... I don't have to guess which widget# iweb assigned.
    Yes, control definitely is the ultimate result to clean, efficient, functional (non-buggy code). I'm working on a set of principles for social, outside, phone, email, physiology, inside, etc that is "Code" for success. It's very complex and needs to have efficiency, functionality, and cleanliness and concision. OKay. cheers.

I'll never use microsfot product again (enormous waste of time and moving backwards in life). so long live apple.
    GOOGLE ANALYTICS and your STATCOUNTER code. !!!!!!! I'm in the process of needing to set those up on my site. Did you do that efficiently? Do you recommended any widgets??? I have numerous statcounter projects, but need to get it up on my main site. Do you put statcounter html on every page of your site? is that necessary? Do you need to put a google analytics on every page of your site?? Thanks heaps. (this is probably a seperate thread now). Should we start this as a new thread?
    I've bookmarked Cyclo's and Toadie's site for thei helpfulness in the future working with iweb.

    Should this be another thread? I think so. The subject has now evolved from anchor tags to analytics and other widgets! lol
    Do you host your site on mobileme or 3rd-party? I'm currently using godaddy and everyone has their preference. Regardless of which 3rd-party used, the '09 iweb ability to auto publish to ftp server is extremely handy for quickly checking to see if code/updates/changes made in iweb look and behave the way they're supposed to behave in browsers.

    I did not mean to be a joke, I'm serious about it.
    apple have poked at my site for some of the stuff that I'm doing.
    Not just a controlling big brother... but thieves, they'd ripped off my works.

    AFAIK I'm the only one (as now) build widgets that *actually work* with iweb3.
    So there is nothing for me to compare with, to know if I do efficient works (in iweb3 context).
    Do you recommended any widgets???
    No. I do look at other widgets to see how they work and how efficient they are...
    But I don't use them, I build my own iweb widgets.

    It's all depend.
    As far as I see so far, people (most of iweb users) add GA and Statcounter thru HTML Snippet...
    But they don't realize that by doing so the codes don't track correctly.

  • Starting new threads from a servlet

    Hi
    I read somewhere that starting new threads from a servlet is not supported in the future releases of J2EE .
    Any one aware of this.
    I have a listener program started as a new thread from the init method of a servlet which is set to load on startup.
    I have to think about another way to do this if this is not suppported in the future releases
    any comments

    Dr clap
    Actually I was getting some warning messages in my websphere server console when I tried to make JDBC connections from the thread I opened in the servlet.
    Everthing works fine but with the warning messages,
    Then someone from IBM answered me in one of the forums quote
    Cause: These messages are being produced due to an
    "unsupported" environment. When application is
    spinning its own threads from an EJB, spinning a
    thread and accessing a database is not supported (per
    the J2EE specification). One exception to this rule is
    if a Servlet is spinning its own threads and accessing
    a database. The J2EE specification is not clear on
    this, so WebSphere Application Server 5.0 must allow
    for it at this time. IBM is working with Sun to
    clarify this in the specification, so eventually (i.e.
    J2EE 1.4) spun threads from a Servlet accessing a
    database outside of a transaction will not be
    supported either.
    Since we don't want to promote the usage of these
    "naked" threads accessing databases, we are producing
    the warning messages. Although they may be filling up
    the logs, we feel that these are necessary to warn the
    user that they are doing something not in-line with
    the intended usage. Customer should consider changing
    their application to comply with the
    J2EE specification.

  • Calling a delegate on the UI thread from a work thread inside a child class.

    Hi All,
    I've run into a snag developing a WPF multithreaded app where I need to call a method on the UI thread from my work thread, where the work thread is running a different class.
    Currently I am trying to use a delegate and an event in the 2nd class to call a method in the 1st class on the UI thread. This so far is not working as because the 2nd class is running in its own thread, it causes a runtime error when attempting to call
    the event.
    I've seen lots of solutions referring to using the dispatcher to solve this by invoking the code, however my work thread is running a different class than my UI thread, so it seems the dispatcher is not available?
    Below is as simplified an example as I can make of what I am trying to achieve. Currently the below code results in a "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it." exception at runtime.
    The XAML side of this just produces a button connected to startThread2_Click() and a label which is then intended to be updated by the 2nd thread calling the updateLabelThreaded() function in the first thread when the button is clicked.
    using System;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Linq;
    using System.Text;
    using System.Threading.Tasks;
    using System.Windows;
    using System.Windows.Controls;
    using System.Windows.Data;
    using System.Windows.Documents;
    using System.Windows.Input;
    using System.Windows.Media;
    using System.Windows.Media.Imaging;
    using System.Windows.Navigation;
    using System.Windows.Shapes;
    using System.Windows.Threading;
    using System.Threading;
    namespace multithreadtest
    public delegate void runInParent();
    public partial class MainWindow : Window
    public MainWindow()
    InitializeComponent();
    threadUpdateLabel.Content = "Thread 1";
    private void startThread2_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
    thread2Class _Thread2 = new thread2Class();
    _Thread2.runInParentEvent += new runInParent(updateLabelThreaded);
    Thread thread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(_Thread2.threadedTestFunction));
    thread.Start();
    public void updateLabelThreaded()
    threadUpdateLabel.Content = "Thread 2 called me!";
    public class thread2Class
    public event runInParent runInParentEvent;
    public void threadedTestFunction()
    if (runInParentEvent != null)
    runInParentEvent();
    I'm unfortunately not very experienced with c# so I may well be going the complete wrong way about what I'm trying to do. In the larger application I am writing, fundamentally I just need to be able to call a codeblock in the UI thread when I'm in a different
    class on another thread (I am updating many different items on the UI thread when the work thread has performed certain steps, so ideally I want to keep as much UI code as possible out of the work thread. The work threads logic is also rather complicated as
    I am working with both a webAPI and a MySQL server, so keeping it all in its own class would be ideal)
    If a more thorough explanation of what I am trying to achieve would help please let me know.
    Any help with either solving the above problem, or suggestions for alternative ways I could get the class in the UI thread to do something when prompted by the 2nd class in the 2nd thread would be appreciated.
    Thanks :)

    If I follow the explanation, I think you can use MVVM Light messenger.
    You can install it using NuGet.
    Search on mvvm light libraries only.
    You right click solution in solution explorer and choose manage nugget...
    So long as you're not accessing ui stuff on these other threads.
    using GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Messaging;
    namespace wpf_Tester
    /// <summary>
    /// Interaction logic for MainWindow.xaml
    /// </summary>
    public partial class MainWindow : Window
    public MainWindow()
    InitializeComponent();
    Messenger.Default.Register<String>(this, (action) => ReceiveString(action));
    private void ReceiveString(string msg)
    MessageBox.Show(msg);
    Dispatcher.BeginInvoke((Action)delegate()
    tb.Text = msg;
    private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
    Task.Factory.StartNew(() => {
    Messenger.Default.Send<String>("Hello World");
    What the above does is start up a new thread - that startnew does that.
    It sends of message of type string which the main window has subscribed to....it gets that and puts up a message box.
    The message is sent from the window to the window in that but this will work across any classes in a solution.
    Note that the receive acts on whichever thread the message is sent from.
    I would usually be altering properties of a viewmodel with such code which have no thread affinity.
    If you're then going to directly access properties of ui elements then you need to use Dispatcher.BeginInvoke to get back to the UI thread.
    I do that with an anonymous action in that bit of code but you can call a method or whatever instead if your logic is more complicated or you need it to be re-usable.
