Lombard gives "No" symbol at startup

I have a PowerBook G3 Lombard that gives me a the universal "no" symbol when I try to start it up. It has a 20GB hard drive that was taken (fully functional) from a Pismo. The Lombard has started up in the past successfully. The RAM all checks out — it's the same RAM as it was when it started up successfully in the past. There is a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.3, and the drive and permissions check out. The PRAM has been reset.
Any idea how to get the computer to boot?

Iko,
Just to eliminate any possibility you have a Lombard with the faulty CPU, download PPC Checker here:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3CARDS/PPCchecker/
If it reports this number...
PowerPC 750L (LoneStar, Rev2.2) Copper G3 PVR = 0x00088202
...you have a CPU that cannot run OSX with memory in the top memory slot; however, 9.x runs just fine with the max of 512MB (2x256) in the memory slots. PPC Checker is a 9.x app and you must be booted to 9.x (CD or HD) to run it. since you have reset the PRAM, I would also reset the power manager.

  • Weird symbol during startup

on a machine I support I get this symbol during startup right after the apple icon but before the login screen

the startup on this machine is also unusually long and this behavior started happening after a crash/reboot when the computer wouldn’t wake from sleep.
After the Mac starts it appear to function normally.
This is a g-4 mirror door with os 10.3.9 and 1 gig ram. It has a 120 gig drive with 80 gigs free.
I have run disk warrior, fixed directory issues (not many) run disk utility from a install disk, fixed permissions, reset the pram, nvram and reset the motherboard.
    No recent installs or updates.

    carl,
using verbose login showed that the problem was loading the ATA IO. at that point I sarted looking at what was on the ata bus.
turns out there was a small hard drive that everyone forgot about that had gone dead. once that was removed the startup was back to normal.
that also explained why once the bootup got past that drive the computer functioned normally.
the visual clue would have been noticing that the drive icon was missing but the user forgot it was there as it was an archive drive that she did not use. so when it went missing she didn't even notice it was gone. she did hear a "funny noise" in a quieter environment I probably would have heard the drive clicking LOL
anyway thanks for the help and hints!

  • "NO Symbol" on startup after Apple icon; had just ran an auto Mac Update-

Hi! Okay, I'm freaking out. I have a late model G4, mirrored 2003 model. A Maxtor master drive taken out from my first gen G4 as my boot drive is installed, along with two slave drives internally. Yesterday, I was getting my freelance work loaded up when .Mac Update alerted me, and I clicked "yeah, go ahead." I went about my biz in the house; my screensaver went on. Long story short, I couldn't get the computer screen back on, to show me my login window, so I rebooted. That's when I freaked out. (all that was running at the time was Mail, Safari, Firefox and the updater asking to restart… maybe the OLD AOL app, I'm not sure.)
Everything looked fine on startup until the nice grey apple turned into a NO symbol. After a few retries, I held down the option key to see what I'd get. I was offered my HD, but again I got the NO symbol. I then booted from TTP's eDrive. I didn't even see my HD to repair it. I then booted from Drive Genius No go. I tried Disk Warrior and got the same thing. (and no, booting from the OS X DVD did nothing; it saw nothing and Disk Utility saw nothing) Usually when I "lose" a drive, I can save my @ss. I'm having a coronary because I can't even see the drive with all these utils. I don't understand why I DO see it on the "option key" bootup. I'm not at all good with OS X, which is a big disappointment to me since I was able to fix anything prior… software and hardware. I have A LOT of stuff on this hard drive that won't boot up, and I'm freaking out, to put it lightly. I don't hear a hardware problem, though. It spins up, and I don't hear anything odd. I definitely do not hear a head crash. There's no clicks of death. Something else is going on that I'm just not able to figure out since I've fallen behind in my geekery since having a baby. (I will let him know of this one day. haha)
HELP. I'm broke, and I'm literally freaking out. I'm posting this from my CUBE and original cinema screen system. A lot of my work is on one of the internals, and safe, but a huge amount of stuff is on my main drive and I'm just ready to commit myself or smash the G4 into 6 million pieces. Could it be the G4 and not the HD? Like I said, I see the drive as an option when I boot the mac holding down the option key: it says "spookie's macintosh HD OSX" — my main drive. I am BAFFLED. I don't understand why NOTHING sees the drive when I try to access it.
    help. please.

The routine that shows the screen with an Icon for each bootable drive is the Startup Manager. It lives in your Mac's ROM, and when it shows an Icon for a drive, that tells you the drive answers and appears (after a very cursory check) to contain evidence of a System. The Icons for Mac OS X or Mac OS 9 are displayed as appropriate. Later in the boot up sequence, your Mac is finding problems that give you the prohibitory sign.
You appear to have carried in a System on a drive from an older Mac, that may not contain all the drivers needed for the specific Hardware in a Mirrored Drive Doors model -- especially if the Install on it came from a Mac-specific CD originally.
I suggest you try your "Full Retail" black with silver-white X Install CD again, (after you have reset the PRAM, as you reported) to see if it can now see your Hard drive. If you are not using a full retail CD/DVD, that may be the reason your drive is not seen. The gray CD from a different Mac will not contain the drivers needed for the ATA/100 Bus connectors (the rear drive pair). You MAY be able to have the drive recognized in the ATA/66 Bus (front connectors) as that Hardware is essentially the same as in many older G4 Macs.

  • "Int'l No" symbol on startup

On my early-2009 8-core 2.28g MacPro (10.6.?.) I now get the international no symbol (circle with a diagonal line through it) when attempting to start up. First, I get the gray startup screen with the Apple logo, then the apple turns into the no symbol.
This started after I experienced Word and Excel not responding. Went to Force Quit and quit both apps. Then I noticed it said Finder was not responding either. So, maybe the wrong thing to do, but I relaunched Finder. Finder never came back, only a plain blue screen (my regular screen color). Nothing was working so I powered it down.
Anybody have any thoughts what happened? I'd boot off the system install disc if I could remember how to get the optical drive open in this circumstance, if possible.
    Thanks for any ideas.

+I'd boot off the system install disc if I could remember how to get the optical drive open in this circumstance, if possible.+
Hold down the (left) mouse button at startup. Don't make any changes to the problem disk unless you have a current backup. If you don't have current backup, you need to make one, if possible, before you do anything else. Either boot from another hard drive with a clean installation, or start the Mac Pro in Firewire target mode and attach it to another Mac.

Do you mean your Firefox icon has disappeared from the desktop or Taskbar or wherever it normally is?
In that case, could you first confirm that Firefox is still installed by doing this:
In the search box on the Windows Start menu type or paste the following and press Enter:
    firefox.exe
That should start Firefox up and display your home page (or previous session windows and tabs, if you selected that instead).
Does that work or do you get an error message?

  • IPod stops playing and gives apple symbol with weird colors.

My IPod was in my pocket for only about 2 minutes and it stopped playing music and gave me a weird apple symbol and blue with white shading every where like it encountered a virus or something. It goes back shortly after but it keeps happening. Is this a known issue with the newer IPod Classic? Do I have to restore my IPod? I have had this IPod for about a year. Any ideas of what is going on??

Maybe try restoring your ipod. Some of the files could have become corrupted.
    Hope this helps...

  • HD instead of Apple symbol on startup

    Hi -
I've recently noticed that every once in a while, when I start my macbook, instead of the normal apple logo, I get a hard drive symbol with an arrow pointing to it. The system won't boot completely until I click on the arrow.
It's as if the OS is asking me to select the HD as the start up disk. If I do it, everything boots fine, and it won't happen again for a few weeks.
I was just curious if anyone knew why this happens.
    Thanks.

Is the internal HD selected as the startup volume? If not, then go to sys prefs and choose startup disk, then choose the internal HD.

  • Apple symbol at startup breaking apart

I started to have random freeze up about 2 days ago and I noticed today that at startup, the Apple symbol either is completed broken and stread accross the screen or appears briefly abd then breaks up, any ideans.

My guess is that you are going to need System disks available here.
Good luck. These things get really frustrating.

  • Weird Symbol with Startup! Help!!

    Hello! I've got a 2005 iMac G5 (no iSight) and i'm running OSX 10.3.9.
For the past three days, when i try to start up my iMac, a weird symbol appears that resembles a gray square with a globe in the center of it. It will blink for about 10-15 seconds and then it will change to a blinking file with a question mark over it.
I've got a feeling this has something to do with my wireless network, but i'm not sure what? Is it possible that a setting that got changed on a PC in the network is causing this? Please let me know ASAP and thanks for your help!
    -Dave

You should press the X key as soon as you hear the startup chime; alternatively, you can hold down the Option key at the same time, select your hard disk in the list, and push the button with the straight arrow. In this case, you will need to reselect your hard disk as the startup disk from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Strange iPod Shuffle(!)-Symbols in Startup Manager

    Hello World,
i have a small problem, rather a matter of strange behavior, but it is kind of annoying and i would be really pleased if someone knows a method to solve this.
As the title tells, the startup manager (enter with 'alt/option' pressed on startup) is showing iPod-symbols instead of HD's. The problem occurred after my Girlfriend plugged her iPod Shuffle in my MacBook 5,1 (13", unibody, late 2008) to charge and fill it with music from my iTunes-library. Only the Bootcamp partition still has its HD-symbol but my Macintosh HD and other startup partitions, when plugged in the usb port, are shown as iPod Shuffles! Ever experienced that?
    So far i:
    - tried to update the EFI - failed because i already had the latest update and the app told me my computer 'doesn't need that update',
    -same with the SMC update,
-set up a new system because i lately replaced the HD with a bigger one,
-ran TechToolPro and Onyx to check the computer of any unusualness.
I'm running out of ideas, if you have any suggestions, i would be glad to hear from you.
    Thx,
    Quarko

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.
Yes, i can still boot up normally, in Os X and Win..err too. As i said, its just a curiosity, seeing this silver iPod Shuffle picture instead of the HD symbol we all know.

  • Some products under adobe master collection cs6 give error 16 on startup

I am running win7 64 bit with 2 drives. One is a 120gb SSD (E) which has my OS, the other is a 1TB HDD (C) for storage. I ran the setup and set the installation path to C:\program files (x86). However, after installation some of the software went to C:\program files (x86) (after effect, bridge, encore, illustrator, media encoder, photoshop, premire, speedgrade), and some went to a newly created (dont know why) E:\Program Files (x86) (x86) (acrobat, audition, bridge, dreamweaver, extension manager, fireworks, flash builder, flash, indesign, prelude). Now thats not ideal.... but I can live with it. The real problem is that all of the stuff installed on C gives an error 16. I looked at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/configuration-error-cs5.html , but it hasnt seemed to help. The Adobe PCD folder was missing altogether on C so I copied it over from E and then set the permissions on BOTH folders. Still no luck though. I also tried reinstalling and going through the motions again, no luck.

    I got the following -

  • How to give ( u00F7 ) symbol in content conversion.

    Hi Experts,
I need to use division symbol as field separator/delimiter  in XI content conversion. Could nay one help me to find an option to do this?
I need the ( ÷ ) symbol in the target side payload, can any one suggest how to do it..?
Heres how you can get division sign:
From my computer go to   Start->All Programs->Acessories->System Tools->Character Map.  From there you can select the divisor sign ( ÷ ) and copy it and use it.
i found the symbol but could not able to copy that symbol, so any other views are thoughts.

    Hi Venkat,
I just copied from your question only and pasted in content conversion parameters. I am just wondering whether we are on the same page or not. I have uploaded the same here:

If it is the same you want then a simple copy and paste have worked for me. I am on PI7.0.
